adidas deal for Man U ↗

This is the kind of deal that KU needs to lock down! One can dream right?

Top the 1.28 billion over 10 years with the 90 million per year for 7 years from Chevy that they just started and maybe they'll be able to get better results.

@Kip_McSmithers

Believe or not, KU is getting a better deal:

Man U is the most valuable sports franchise in the world in all sports with a value of $2.3B, so the 10 year contract for $1.28B is about 56% of the value of the team.

KU is getting $26M for 6 years or $4.3M per year; project that to 10 years and you have $43M. According to Forbes, KU has the second most valuable college basketball franchise worth $33M (football probably would be a negative) so KU is getting 130% of the value of the franchise. Of course, this is just one way to look at finances.

Adidas' $7.8 million per year contract with Louisville ranks just behind the University of Michigan's $8.2 million deal as the richest contract with the apparel company. University of Notre Dame's apparel contract with Under Armour yields $9 million a year, the highest known agreement in college athletics.

Since Louisville is ranked as the highest valued college basketball franchise at $39M, the $78M would represent about $200%; of course Louisville has other programs, such as football, with a much higher value than KU's football program; Michigan and Notre Dame are football powerhouses, So, considering that KU is almost uniquely basketball, the contract is not too shabby.

Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

$1.28 B is kind of cheeky, no?

It feels like someone buying access to more than Manu eyeballs and clicks!

Like maybe preferred access to the Crown's Commonwealth of Great Britain--the largest private economic entity in the world.

Question: Will Man U have have to wear cammies?

Interesting take given that the Man U is owned bu Malcolm Glazier, an American ( who passed away recently) that also owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Maybe they are trying to get access to the NFL starting with Tampa Bay?

BTW, cammies would be an improvement over some of the advertisement-laden monstrosity some soccer teams wear.

Just imagine being a player in a sport where you get paid over $1mil for every goal you score?!

There is something to be said for a sport that truly cherishes every single goal.

I definitely enjoyed all the FIFA WC action.

I thought Man U was publicly owned? They sell stock on the big board... NYSE.

Whaddaya think it means? 4 years later? On the brink of another reputed market melt down? In relation to Adidas new deal? If anything?

Oh, and I forgot to weigh in on the cammies. I much, much, MUCH prefer colorful Euro corporate logos to cammies. Cammies have to have been the dumbest idea for basketball uniforms ever.

But here's something I bet we can agree on. KU wearing traditional white silks with crimson and blue trim on Naismith Court can't be beaten.

Rock Chalk!

@drgnslayr

I feel the same way about baseball. Get a hit 3 out of 10 times and you are an all star. Make 3 out of 10 FGAs and you had a terrible shooting night.

@jaybate 1.0 CAMOUFLAGE!!

I thought you guys were talking about lingerie this whole time.

I thought THAT might be entertaining, regardless of footwear!!

@nuleafjhawk

But it's now YOUR fault if adidas has KU wearing camisole style shirts!

😱

@jaybate 1.0 I can live with that. At least I'll be famous for SOMETHING!

That article is 4 years old!!! A lifetime in the financial world. Since that article was written, The Man U went public and issued an IPO through the New York Stock Exchange in 2012 for about 10% of the shares, BTW, the club used to be public but was de-listed from the London Exchange in 2005, once the Glazier family obtained 75% of the shares. The share sale and subsequent reduction of debt determined the current valuation of the club at $2.3B. Malcolm Glazier passed away a couple of months away but his six kids control 90% of the shares. The club is now very profitable and in sound financial health and still the most valuable franchise in all sports.

Now, here is the real reason Adidas signed that large of a contract. For years, Adidas was king when it came to soccer but Nike has been making huge inroads. Adidas chose to sign the best known and most watched team in the world to send a message that it is not conceding anything...expect Nike to follow suite with a big deal in the sports world in the near future...

Adidas versus Nike... ↗

...and that's the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say.

When it comes to uniforms I am a traditionalist and prefer plain uniforms in the the traditional school colors; No cammos or cammies for me. Having said that, it looks like the "zubaz" like gear was very popular with the younger generation.

I personally hate to see traditional European cubs wearing uniforms with ads front and back in Arabic advertising a Middle Eastern business. I hope we never get there in America.

I agree, the whites with crimson and blue are the color of royalty and hope they are not cheapened with trendy designs.

Rock Chalk indeed.
