LAWRENCE — Charlie Weis knew this was a gamble. Now, he’s ready to see if it’s going to pay off.

Two years ago, Weis devoted 16 of his 24 scholarships to junior-college players. And while six of those players are no longer on the roster, the 10 that remain have helped form a foundation of upperclassmen that Weis hopes to win with this season.
