LAWRENCE — Kansas suspended seven players just hours before the season opener, all but one of them defenders, yet allowed just 188 yards and smothered Wichita State.

The game was the last in football between the in-state rivals. WSU disbanded its program after the 1986 season. The Jayhawks enjoyed a 5-2 all-time advantage over the Shockers in the series.

Among those summoned into the KU starting lineup was freshman Rick Bredesen.
