Sounds like Tevin Mack is going to be the last piece of the #kubball roster, though I wouldn’t rule out a 5th year or juco guy

May 04, 2015 03:45 PM #6

@Statmachine like what?

May 04, 2015 03:46 PM #7

@Statmachine can't figure if he wanted to follow smart, why is he waiting so long?

May 04, 2015 03:48 PM #8

@Statmachine brown did go to Cali.

May 04, 2015 03:49 PM #9

@Crimsonorblue22 Yes he did. Mack is 4 year player and a NEED for the WUG! I hope KU snags him.

May 04, 2015 03:51 PM #10

@Statmachine you said he was waiting on browns decision, that's what I was wondering about.

May 04, 2015 03:51 PM #11

@Statmachine and what did his mom say??? You left us hanging!!

May 04, 2015 03:52 PM #12

@Crimsonorblue22 I copy pasted a Tweet from someone else. I know Brown went to Cali so now we wait and see if it pans out?

May 04, 2015 03:52 PM #13

Mack's mom said something about KU pushing the hardest saying "they really need him". If the crystal ball means anything we are really behind Texas (smart angle) and Georgia who he reportedly visited.
If Self's interest is that much he must really know something about our perimeter that we don't.

May 04, 2015 03:57 PM #14

@BeddieKU23 The crystal ball does not mean anything to me any more! That same crystal ball had Brown at a 5% chance to end up at Cali. Most of those experts follow ever high school athlete in every sport so when they see someone closest to the source make their predictions everyone jumps on the band wagon. Doesn't mean that expert has any relevant information. Could be a gut feeling which obviously means nothing.

May 04, 2015 04:16 PM #15

@BeddieKU23 I think it's chicken salad that shaka is now trying to steal out his players from VCU. Furthermore, I don't think we should have to tell any kid we 'really need him". We're KU, dammit. We're looking for the guys that say "I really need you, KU".

May 04, 2015 04:18 PM #16

@Statmachine

I agree there's basically what 3 to 4 guys who get some information like Meyer and such and then everyone follows suit after the fact of Meyer making a pick. But I wouldn't say that its useless or means nothing because usually it gives you an idea where kids may end up.

Brown said very little so the speculation he was going here or there was never factual information. But the limited info that was out there didn't point to KU at any point and nobody had him going to us even though we made his top 5.

The Cal pick is shocking to me because I only thought he was interested if Rabb & Swanigan both went there. Swanigan was always a Mich St lean from the beginning so I just thought it was odd that that they won out. I don't view Cal as a team to fear and I do think he will go pro after 1 year no matter how much he says he wants to stay and develop. Kids with his talent don't pass up on the money.

May 04, 2015 04:21 PM #17

I have been following all of the 2016 KU recruits (or scholarship offers) and I could make a lot of assumptions based off of their twitter posts. Some of these kids are commenting heavily on UK so I could make the assumption that they are going to UK and that's how most experts decide on their CB predictions. Same with KU BUT if Cheick and Bragg are still around next year do you really think all of the big guys leaning towards KU will commit to KU? I doubt it. The CB is a good measuring stick when kids are talking BUT if their not (like Brown, and Wiggins) most of the picks are just band wagon picks because some kid says they had a great official visit and said they loved the coach and program.

May 04, 2015 04:22 PM #18

@KUSTEVE

In this case I think its KU saying that we need this guy and not so much the other way around. It's not like we were involved the first time around with him so the mutual interest is coming from Self's choice to make him a priority. Remember he's the backup plan to the back up, back up back up plan.

May 04, 2015 04:25 PM #19

@BeddieKU23 If i was Tevin, and I had selected VCU first, and was then offered by Kansas, I would've broken a finger calling Coach Self back to gladly, and joyously accept.

May 04, 2015 04:25 PM #20

@Statmachine

UK will have a strong 16 class, a lot of top prospects in their area.

KU has a lot of targets as well but guys like Bolden, Ferguson, Fox, Herard, and others are guys that we've been in on for some time. I know Self is after the big fish as well but I don't view him as having much of a chance with them. Josh Jackson keeps getting thrown around as a KU lean but zero info to back that up. He's more likely to skip College than end up here...

May 04, 2015 04:27 PM #21

@KUSTEVE

I agree but he signed with Smart before, got out and the one school he was considering before KU and Georgia got involved was Texas. I wonder if he will stay loyal to Smart or break his heart and play for his rival. I don't have a good feeling that he would do that but I'll never be able to predict 18 year old kids minds either.

May 04, 2015 04:52 PM #22

@BeddieKU23 You have to remember Smart walked out on his obligation for the kids that play for VCU so I don't believe that Mack has any obligation to follow him to UT. If KU is the better option in Mack's eyes he will commit to KU. Loyalty works both ways and Smart left him hanging first.

Thanks for the video! I haven't watched much of Tevin but seems like a smooth player. The only thing negative I saw from that video is that he seems to be a below the rim player... Or maybe I'm reading into that breakaway layup too much.

May 05, 2015 03:16 AM #36

@CaptnMo this is bad to say, but I thought he looked like a ball hog against a small weak team.

May 05, 2015 07:52 PM #37

Not the best highlight reel. Obviously not a OAD, which isn't a bad thing.

May 05, 2015 08:06 PM #38

He looks like a solid multi-year player with pretty general skills, not too specific. Good base to build on and he may still be adding inches.

Don't know anything of his defensive capabilities, he probably hasn't learned much of that in HS. Coaches look at attitude to assess potential for becoming a hardnose on the ball.

I'm all in for Big Mack!

May 05, 2015 08:10 PM #39

I would take a http://www.loyolaramblers.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/milton_doyle_819406.html β†— right about now! Our KU transfer became the first player in Loyola's program history to lead team in scoring (14.9 ppg), assists (115, 3.6 apg), steals (38, 1.2 spg) and blocks (23, 0.7 bps).

May 05, 2015 08:24 PM #40

This is what I say when ALL of our players leave!

May 05, 2015 08:40 PM #41

@Statmachine

It has been fun watching Milton do so well after leaving Kansas. He just wasn't going to see the floor enough and have a big enough role to develop into what he has become now. We could all see potential in him, but sometimes it just isn't in the cards for a guy to stay where he won't become a big time asset.

Glad Milton took on the challenge to pursue another program, and very happy for him and his success!

@wrwlumpy Me too! I am anxious to see who HCBS signs late? Mason, Graham, and Doyle were all 3 under rated and late pick ups by HCBS. All 3 are solid players! I am glad we have some depth in the front court because there are fewer talented un signed bigs out there. Fewer diamonds in the rough at 6"10and up. There are still some untapped under the radar and under 6'6" kids out there HCBS can pick up.

May 05, 2015 11:43 PM #44

he will be visiting Texas This weekend

May 10, 2015 07:46 AM #47

He had a good time at his visit to Austin

May 11, 2015 01:59 PM #48

"Former VCU commit Tevin Mack did not orally commit to Texas on his unofficial visit over the weekend, his mom, Paula, tells Zagsblog.com. Mack, a 6-foot-6 senior wing out of Dreher High in Columbia, South Carolina, is still considering KU and Georgia. He’s also had Clemson, UCLA and West Virginia on his list of schools. Last week, Paula said her son would hold a Skype conference with KU’s coaches, who would take Tevin on a video tour of KU’s campus and facilities."

~ KUSports.com

Wow.... we compete with a video tour? Doesn't sound too likely for us, but then, the video tour of the new apartments might finally help us land a recruit!

I wonder, with all their money in Austin, what the player dorms look like?

May 11, 2015 07:03 PM #49

May 11, 2015 07:54 PM #52

@Crimsonorblue22

Texas is doing what KU did in football, guarantee contracts for unproven results that end up costing a lot of long term money. I personally think Smart is overrated, but he seems to have a lot of fans.

May 12, 2015 03:24 AM #53

@wrwlumpy So are all the Big Red bball fans. They can't wait to see him play. They have high hopes for him.

May 12, 2015 03:25 AM #54

I thought this kid would follow Shaka to UT. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Self lands him, not Shaka'd, just pleasantly surprised.

May 12, 2015 03:29 AM #55

@JayHawkFanToo It's easy to bring it in a tourney as a flash in the pan, but to bring it every single game on a big time stage like the B12 is a different story. I agree, he does remind me a bit of Turner Gill and KU football. I think Shaka will get a rude awakening in the B12. I see him lasting 2-3 years and UT fans will be calling for his resignation. I think he had a great ride at VCU, but again, it's not the B12.
I love Turner Gill and he's a great guy, just wasn't D1 head football coaching material. I think the comparison, though different sports is fairly interesting to say the least.

May 12, 2015 04:53 AM #56

@JayHawkFanToo If you think that the past few KU football coaches contracts were bad, you must not remember the "lifetime" contract that Jack Mitchell got for winning the 1961 Bluebonnet bowl. He was forced out after the 1966 season to be replaced by Pepper Rodgers.

May 12, 2015 05:24 AM #57

@sfbahawk

Sorry, a little before my time and since I am older than most posters here, likely very few have heard of Jack Mitchell. Gill and Weiss, on the other hand, are pretty recent and likely everybody is familiar with them and the multimillion contracts KU is still paying.

May 12, 2015 06:07 AM #58

@truehawk93

Smart has not won a single regular season championship in his entire career. He did not win one while in the weak Colonial Conference and he did not win one while in the A-10 either. He is like the Kardashians, he is famous for being famous and not necessarily for his record.

"@EvanDaniels: Tevin Mack told Scout he will likely decide on Tuesday. He said he's down to 3 schools. Has visited Texas."

May 15, 2015 12:50 PM #60

@JayHawkFanToo I just saw your post on Smart. Smart did do something that gain him fame, and he did something that deserves high recognition -- he got a team to the Final Four. Not only that, it was a team that was in a play-in game. Of course, VCU beat top seeded Kansas in a game we'd rather forget. While I know you don't place much value on this achievement -- relative to conference stuff -- a large percentage of the basketball universe does.

The point that you're perhaps making though is he had his 15 minutes of fame. He has not proven that he is anything more than a good coach that had a nice run one season. And he's lived off that burst of fame for quite a while now. I'm with you there.

LONGHORNS is where he is going. Just saw.

May 19, 2015 08:01 PM #63

He was probably going there any way. I think KU picking up Vick made his decision a lot easier.

May 19, 2015 08:09 PM #64

UT will have a dangerous back court in a couple years! They signed a pg, sg, and a sf all inside the top 50. Eric Davis, Kerwin Roach Jr., and Tevin Mack. Its going to be good for the Big 12 if you ask me! IF their new head coach can have some early success recruiting in the deepest pond in the US and on the court then he could give KU a run for its money?

May 19, 2015 09:29 PM #65

I just saw a this link β†— on Williams. Sounds like we're not his main focus.

But did anyone see this kid on the market -- Paschal Chukwu β†—?

Also, I saw at kusports.com that UK is the leader with Papagiannis if he did come to college and that he would be a one year guy. So that looks dead. If he's a one year guy, then it should be.

May 19, 2015 09:37 PM #66

@HighEliteMajor I saw that Paschal was on the market BUT I think HCBS wants another American born BIG for the WUG. The way he has stopped recruiting Papagainnis and was talking about Williams leads me to believe he NEEDS another big for the WUG? With a name like Paschal Chukwu I cant imagine he is indeed an American? I could be wrong but with Diallo out for the WUG we need another BIG that can fill the 5 spot desperately if you know what I mean?

May 19, 2015 09:42 PM #67

@HighEliteMajor As far as UK leading for Papagiannis on kusports.com I could get better information from a psychic hotline! 247 sports said that Vick was 88% UK and 12% KU. These recruiting sites are a joke!

@HighEliteMajor

Here is a peek at Chukwu... he is from Nigeria and is not eligible for WUG... but seriously... who gives a f&%# about WUG! We should sign this guy! Not many guys his size floating around in HS.

[link text](

May 19, 2015 11:42 PM #71

@drgnslayr Wow .. could you imagine how good he would be if he had a full year to practice against Lucas, Traylor, and Mickels ... er, uh, ... a full year practicing?

Seriously, though, add this kid and Bolden to Bragg and Lucas for 2016-17, that might be pretty solid.

May 20, 2015 12:01 AM #72

I think all these players transferring from one school to another is rather disgusting. And commitments and decommitments. I can understand those from VCU or Florida St. that ask for a release of the LOI. But i don't like it when there are so many decommitments.

I wasn't aware until this morning that Caleb Swanigan had decommitted from Michigan State. It couldn't have been more than 30 days ago that he committed to the Spartans. I wonder what he knows now that he didn't know then.
I just read that he has now committed to Purdue.

May 20, 2015 12:06 AM #73

@drgnslayr wu tang clan ain't nothin to chuk with! Holy smokes! Would be fun to see how far we could develop a kid like that.

May 20, 2015 09:45 AM #74

@Wigs2

I loved the coaches comment about being completely thrown off guard by his unhappiness. Called this generation of kids " the microwave generation". And he is completely right!! This kid would have started this year and they returned an All-American type PG, sounds to me he would have been fed plenty with development..

Maybe it will be KU's gain but we won't be the only fish after him..

May 20, 2015 06:20 PM #75

@BeddieKU23

Really hard to say. I mean.. come on.. the guy is 7'2" and looks pretty coordinated and he only averaged a couple points/rebs and averaged only 9 minutes a game? I can't believe it would have been that way at Kansas last year for this guy. Even if Cliff had stayed eligible. His FG% was 66%... far above everyone else on his team. They couldn't have created some offense around this guy, while making him a huge defensive asset? This guy offers immediate defensive help, something Self puts above everything else. He would have seen the court.

Of course, now that he is transferring, the coaches say he would have started. They had a better option last year?

I think his stat line is what should raise the red flag about his unhappiness. At that slow pace, he may have never been able to build a decent stat line and earn himself guaranteed NBA money.

He really doesn't look so different from JoJo. Good feet and hands... coordinated. Needs more strength and confidence. I know if I had a guy like that on my squad, I'd be working with him to plug him in and get him going immediately.

May 21, 2015 09:43 AM #76

@drgnslayr

I remember seeing some of Chukwu's games on the AAU circuit and he was all defense. He was one of the best shot-blockers in his class coming in. His offense isn't there and even with a year with KU, I'd say his offense will be a few years away. He was a top 60 guy that was dominate on defense, his mobility around the rim for his size is hard to find.

He really didn't get the chance with Desrosiers their starting Center last year. Cooley is a good coach but he also plays a short bench, and will play his starters a lot of minutes. So I'm speculating why he left had to do with his coach, because its hard to see him leaving when the 5 was his this upcoming year. You can't teach 7'2 size and he'd be a nice stash and develop big. I'd still rather get Bolden but I'm sure Self can sell that we will need him anyway regardless of Chuckwu coming.

May 21, 2015 01:40 PM #77

@BeddieKU23

I'd be happy with his defense and stuffing ability for the first year. That is more than we had with Cliff!
