New contract for Perez?
Jun 05, 2015 09:47 PM #1

According to Yahoo, Perez is wanting to renew his deal?

He obviously got a basement deal getting a 7 million in 5 years.

I am torn. On one hand, Perez definitely deserves a better deal considering the level of player he is at such a crucial position. Not to mention how much of a leader he is to the organization.

But it is a double standard. If he wants a bigger contract because of the player is has become, would it be expected to take a pay cut if he under performs? Of course not! It's the same double standard when organizations and fans want loyalty and a hometown discount yet will cut the player if he isn't worth the contract.

How do you fellas/ladies feel about the situation.

With the physical pounding he takes, and the fact that he doesn't get many days off, it's doubtful that Perez ever sees another big contract. I think if the organization is going to ride him as hard as they have the last two seasons, they should give him more money upfront, knowing that he probably won't get a chance to get another deal later on.

@JhawkAlum he is the face of this fun new team!

@JhawkAlum He's only 24-25 yrs old so lock him up for at least 5-6 more cause in a couple of years when Hoz & Moose are up they'll be real hard to retain no more than KC will ante up compared to NY, LA, or several others. I say sign every damn one of them now while you at least have a chance or you may see an exodus down the trail. Gordon is up this year & although he's only a 260-270 batter, his glove is worth many runs per season. I hate to replace him with an Aoki or Orlando full time. He's already saved at least 6-7 runs in less than 1/3 of the season. Just my nickels worth. & about time for first pitch so I'll head out now. Baseball is fun again @crimsonorblue22...yeah !! Catch ya on the rebound if I don't get dunked...

@JhawkAlum Good catchers are worth their weight in gold. Perez is probably in the top 5 in MLB right now. He has about the quickest and most accurate pick-off throws you will ever see and he doesn't have to get out of his squat to do it. And he's pretty damn good with the stick also.

Now, that being said. I'm of the old school. You make your bed you sleep in it. You agree to a contract of $7 mil for 5 years, that's what you got. Reminds me of a former Saints QB down here, Aaron Brooks (no relation). Got old Tom Benson to give him a $10 mil bonus after he took the Saints to the playoffs. The next year he couldn't hit the broadside of the barn if his nose was touching it. What really made me mad, he'd throw an int, go to the bench and be all smiley and laughing. You screwup, I want to see you knock a Gatorade cooler over. Be angry at yourself.

So while I think Salvy is deserving, maybe he should've signed a 2 or 3 yr deal instead of a 5 yr.

@JhawkAlum

He took that contract because he had no choice. He's from a war torn country. If David Glass has any class you pays the man. I know the great Mister Kauffman would. Of course he was a man of class and honored his agreements. (why do you still own the team Mister Glass?)(It was Mister Kauffman's desire that the Royals be sold to Local ownership) (You even said that yourself)

@brooksmd

I never have a problem with NFL guys getting those big contracts because most NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. As a result, those guys usually only get the signing bonus and whatever their contract for that year is. That means that a guy that signs a 5 year, $40 million deal with a $5 million signing bonus is really only probably guaranteed the $5m plus the first year salary, which is usually the lowest salary for the deal because most deals are backloaded (something like $6m, $7m, $8m, $9m, $10m for the deal I described above). When you look at it in those terms, the guy is really only guaranteed to get $11m, still a nice salary no doubt, but not the $40m + $5m that it sounds like on the internet. If he gets hurt, performs poorly or whatever, he may be out of the rest of the deal.

Baseball is guaranteed, but still backloaded. Also, the window in which you can play is small.

I look at it this way - if your company worked you in such a way that you may only be able to physically work at your job for 2-3 more years, would you (assuming you aren't close to retirement already) be okay with your current salary or would you want a significant raise? I think most would want a raise if the way they were being worked made it likely their career would be cut short by a significant amount.

@justanotherfan I would think the baseball window is much bigger than the football window. I like incentives. Here's $2-3$ mil/yr, plus another mil for so many hr's, or hits, or stolen bases, or golden glove, or save's, or wins and so on. Just giving a guy $250 mil for 10 years is asinine. A few years ago, Andre Dawson, played on artificial turf in Montreal, knew he needed to get on real grass or his knees were done. He told the Cubs, send me a blank contract to sign for the first year and re-negotiate after that. He was named NL MVP that year. Get paid for what you do, not what you might do.

@justanotherfan

Where did you get the information that baseball contract are not guaranteed? Like all contracts they are guaranteed if that is what the contract calls for. Now, if a player retires or is forced to retire because of injuries suffered in his own time, outside baseball, and in the list of high risk activities the contract specifically prohibits then, and like every other contract, the team can contest and void the reminder of the contract. Baseball teams routinely get insurance for the larger contracts. Many players that could no longer play due to health issues were able to stay with their teams, collect salary and the club collected the insurance until they officially retired; Bagwell, Belle, and Puckett come to mind.

@JayHawkFanToo

Baseball contracts are guaranteed. I was responding to @brooksmd because he was commenting on Aaron Brooks from the Saints. DIdn't mean to cause confusion.

I would also add that if Perez's performance begins to decline, it will probably be as a result of overuse by the Royals. That isn't Perez's fault. That is the Royals fault that he came off a knee injury and has caught more games and innings in the last two years than any catcher in the last half century.

Salvy needs some days off from the beatin' he gets, but not when hittin' as hot as lil' sister's rear. He's just really blistering the ball right now. I also wouldn't mind seeing Dyson in the 9 spot for Rios either. Like @brooksmd says "Speed do alot..." & Alex is hittin like "Mendoza" since his DL stint. He's pressing too hard & needs more time to get up to full throttle...JMO
