Roster and coaching staff announced for WUG

The roster isn't a surprise, it's the 12 players we've known for awhile now.

The coaching staff will be Self and his assistants will Snacks, Fred Quartlebaum, and James Cox.

Kurtis Townsend, Norm Roberts, and Brennan Bechard are going to stay in the US for the July recruiting period. It kinda confirms what we've suspected about Howard's recruiting ability if Self isn't leaving him behind.

This deployment of coaches is very Interesting. Self is not EVEN sending a big man coach!!!

Ergo Diallo's rapid development must be of prime importance.

Ergo signing a footer must be of prime importance.

Self apparently is not taking the WUG seriously at all, since he could not sign bigs capable of making KU competitive.

Snacks appears on the shortest leash in history and the once designated recruiting specialist for Chicago appears on ice. Might the do-do involving Snacks and Cliff be waaaaay deeper than we have been told so far? What does it mean when a recruiting specialist in Chicago is not recruiting during the July window?

Whose that other guy?

@jaybate-1.0 Huh, fascinating. Bill doesn't seem the type to just lay down and give someone else the game though.

@Lulufulu

John Dillinger

"In the heyday of the Depression-era outlaw (1933–1934) Dillinger was the most notorious of all, standing out even among more violent criminals such as Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Bonnie and Clyde."

@Texas-Hawk-10 That was a cool article. I had no idea there were other sports involved and other US colleges involved. Thats awesome. I hope I can catch at least some of those KU games on dvr or something.

Kurtis Townsend is Self's Chicago specialist. I'm pretty sure Townsend has been the lead recruiter on the majority of KU's Chicago area recruits under Self.

@Texas-Hawk-10

Does anyone know what exactly does Snacks do for KU basketball?

Jun 13, 2015 04:11 PM #11

@drgnslayr Middle man or supplier I would assume.

@Texas-Hawk-10

He is going to South Korea. Maybe he'll stay there and be our chief recruiter in South Korea?

@drgnslayr

he "snacks"...???

Obviously he is not recruiting and, AFAIK, he did not bring any of the current class of recruits. No question that Townsend and Robers are Coach Self's top assistants. Bechard is Director of Basketball Operation and in charge of logistics. a position many have used to learn the ropes of how a program works and as a springboard to an Assistant Coaching position. I will guess that in the next couple of years he will be an Assistant at KU or another decent sized program.

Quartlebaum is an interesting individual, this is a comment from Coach Self when he was hired:

“Now we add a person like Fred Quartlebaum who has been around big-time college athletics having worked at Notre Dame, Iowa State, North Carolina and St. John’s as a full-time assistant. Fred played a huge role in the recruitment of the Carolina team that went on to win a national championship. He brings a ton of energy and organization and we feel Fred will be a perfect fit here at Kansas.”

Looks like he might be in line to replace Snacks.

The message is very powerful: the man hired to bring youth, energy and Chicagoland recruits to KU that brought a recruit with baggage is NOT recruiting during the July window.

Further, Quartlebaum, hired because he was instrumental in recruiting players to a UNC program that was apparently then engaged in the "easy class scandal" activity is NOT RECRUITING during the July window.

Hmmm.
