PITTSBURG STATE GORILLAS
Oct 29, 2015 07:45 PM #1

Next Wednesday I'll be able to watch a KU preseason game without spending money in a Sports bar. With less than a week before we tip off, we, already know how good the Jayhawks are by their showing in the WUG against superior talent. What we don't know is --- How will Svi and Devonte do. It's been a long time since we've seen them on the squad. Will Bragg and Vick show us that they deserve minutes and finally, will Diallo be set free. Anyway, here's to the start of a great year.

I grew up in the Southwest portion of Missouri and in fourth grade I would get up in the morning at six and watch Popeye cartoons sponsored by Pittsburgh's own Bread Company "Town Talk Bread" featuring an old man named A.J. Crippe to tell all of us kids to eat A.J. Crippe's Town Talk Bread. In the evening, this show came on the tube.

@wrwlumpy if u don't mind, it would be nice if you put names on them. Thx!

@Crimsonorblue22 Sorry, The KC Monarch played in 3 Negro League
World Series. His name is Alexander "Sharky" Sweat. and the Chief Player is Kendall Gammon who played for the Gorillas. I'm not sure Sharky was allowed to attend Pittsburgh State. He did grow up in Pittsburgh. The person I left off this list from Pittsburgh was the BTK Killer.

Oct 29, 2015 08:02 PM #4

@Crimsonorblue22 Of course you know Fran who was married to both Kukla and Ollie.

Oct 29, 2015 08:03 PM #5

@Crimsonorblue22 ...and Gary Busey!

There is no Pittsburgh in Kansas, but there is a Pittsburg.
The most famous recent Pittsburg State alum is a second year receiver for the Arizona Cardinals named John Brown.
Brannen Greene's father also played basketball for the Gorillas.

@kansas-oats ooops, dam, thought I was in a KU sports site, my bad, didn't realize we were in grammer 101. it's ol wrwlumpy, MOST of us know who your talking about. Hope I got it right, will probably be corrected, so my bad.

Oct 29, 2015 09:34 PM #8

@jayballer54 I pretty sure @kansas-oats meant no harm! It's you're! 😉

Oct 30, 2015 03:13 AM #9

@Crimsonorblue22 HA awesome thanks just proved my point. Grammer and a sports chat room isn't this great lmao thank you so much, didn't really realize we were here to critique others grammer, and spelling but hey I forgot where I'm at, again thank you for putting me in my place, I am so grateful

Oct 30, 2015 03:36 AM #10

@jayballer54

furgitaboutit...

How the heck would someone spell that?

Oct 30, 2015 05:11 AM #11

@wrwlumpy

First, GREAT montage on a tough subject. Only the seriously good could do Pittsburg State.

Second, who is the Monarch?

Third, Kukla RULES!!!!!!!!!

Oct 30, 2015 05:17 AM #12

@kansas-oats

Father Greene played for the Gorillas?

Then Brannen Greene has to play big minutes.

Brannen Greene has the Kansas thang in him despite all that read Georgia clay in his treads.

Brannen Greene is a strip pit legacy.

Brannen has to play.

Brannen Greene has to be nicknamed after some of the black market liqueur that was once produced in the strip pits in quantities sufficient enough to keep Europe drunk right after the ravages of WWII.

Johnny Walker Greene Label!!!!!

In my son's Junior year of High School, we visited Pittsburg St. He's a computer engineer now, not a football player, but for the size of school, they have a really impressive football stadium. And the whole town is behind the school. When we were there, almost every home and business had a PSU (not Penn St) flag or banner or something flying. It was pretty neat to see a town behind a school like that. It doesn't happen in Salina. If I didn't drive by Kansas Wesleyan every day I wouldn't know it even existed.

Oct 30, 2015 04:45 PM #14

PSU's BB coach, Kevin Muff, played for KSU and battled down low against Danny Manning.

Oct 30, 2015 04:51 PM #15

@jaybate-1.0 Alexander "Sharkey" Sweatt. He grew up in Humboldt Ks. - Same place where Walter "Big Train" Johnson came from.

Oct 30, 2015 06:32 PM #22

My husband graduated from PSU.

We are again "flooding down in Texas." Same places that flooded this Memorial Day (Wimberly / Blanco River) are getting up to 18 inches of rain and there are emergency evacuations going on. I had 9 inches last weekend and today we've had another 5! I was off today to go to doctor at 8 am and on the way a fence had washed out and somebody's cow herd were walking down and in the highway. Glad to be home even though it took me 4 hours.

Oct 30, 2015 06:39 PM #23

I've many, many relatives who graduated Pitt State-teachers, business persons, nurse practitioners, etc. Also my Dad was a 3 sport letterman for the Gorillas in the 1920's. Cool town if ya can stand the sulphur smell & the awful tasting water.

Oct 30, 2015 06:59 PM #24

@RockChalkinTexas I thought that was over!! Be careful! Have not heard from @JayhawkRock78 for ever.

Oct 30, 2015 07:00 PM #25

@globaljaybird really excited to hear about the snakes, thx! Leave it to you!😬

Oct 30, 2015 08:06 PM #26

@globaljaybird

Fished'em twice as a boy for a change from farm ponds and reservoirs, and rivers. Amazing places those pits. I don't recall scorpions, just the Mocs and copperheads. Saw the Mocs, and was warned about the copperheads. Rattlers you can hear if you go slow son, but the copperheads, well, be careful. 😄

Oct 30, 2015 08:11 PM #27

@globaljaybird cool about your dad!

Famed sports artist Ted Watts is a Pitt State grad. Many around the world have seen his wonderful murals for decades & had no idea they belonged to the Oswego Kansas native. !50yrsAllen.jpg ↗ !wilt.jpg ↗

YOURE PRECOCIOUS TOO!

Awesome recall on Sharky!

Oct 31, 2015 05:01 AM #32

My mom and all of her siblings are Pitt St. alums. I used to go games there when my mom would go up to visit her family since they live 30 minutes away from Pittsburg. This is also the only basketball game my mom will actively cheer against KU in basketball.

@wrwlumpy You forgot a PSU alum a lot of people here would be familiar with. Current Texas St. and former Texas A&M, Alabama, and TCU coach Dennis Franchione.
