If Svi plays passable defense, he will have a very long and very profitable basketball career. Even after his days as a rotation guy are over, he can be an off the bench shooter well into his mid to late 30s, which gives him a chance to sign one more contract than most other players might be able to muster.

Does he still need to make the team? Is this money guaranteed?

4 million in California. Taxes will be close to 55%. He will see 2 million. I'd do anything I could to not play in California or New York.

@BigBad I'm sure there are ways around that tax. He could set up an Incomplete Non-Grantor Trust and pay no State Taxes on it, if I'm not mistaken. Providing, of course, Svi claims residence somewhere other than California.

Doesn’t Bill claim out of state income for the away games? Svi could do the same.

@BigBad NBA players taxes are much more complicated than just paying taxes wherever they claim residency. They pay taxes in every state they play games in plus in Canada because of the Raptors. It's very complicated for them and any other professional athlete.

it is called the "jock tax" but not every state has it. Nine states currently don't even have a state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, so players do not pay taxes in these states. Some states have per game fee which many times is greater than what a low paid player makes for that game. There is talk about the owners picking up the per game fee.
