Home Court Advantage?
Jun 22, 2020 07:35 PM #1

Just a softball for fun.

If no fans are allowed in this season, will Allen Fieldhouse still feel intimidating to opposing players?

Personally, I think it might... It’ll still have that energy. I mean you can feel it in the walls as soon as you step in the building.

Also just how crazy will it be to see an empty Fieldhouse?

Man, it is/would be so crazy. They talk about this , Coach has tossed out so numbers - -well him and Long have. - - The numbers I've been hearing that IF ANY then numbers like 3,000. Can you imagine 3,ooo fans in the Phog.

There is talk on TOS , with this - - pretty dam good chance - - better then good , there will be no students. If they are having students stay home after Thanksgiving Break? Most students or a vast Majority live on Campus. - -Oh sure you will have local Students may account for a bit but not a lot.

Another question will be how will the choose the 3,00 that DO get to come to the Phog ? - - Will it be restricted to Donors - -Alumi ? - -Will it be a raffle type thing for those 3,ooo ? How would it effect the Band - -the Cheer/Yell leaders ? - -The drill team ?

What would concern me would be if it is confined to 3,000 like the number being throwed out if it's confined to Donors well a lot of those are elderly like myself. - -& not sure if anyone notices , have a tendency to be more of a sit back cheese and wine -Tennis match type experience. just doesn't get that rabid feel that intimidation type environment.

So I guess the answer to the question to sum it up would for me anyways ,I feel we would lose a lot of that home court advantage. Of course this is going to be the same thing in almost every court as far as that goes.

Another question - -do we lose that streak for consecutive sellouts ? because of this - -or they put an some kin of notation ? - -going to be interesting , and that's IF ANY fans are allowed at all. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Sorry that would just be depressing as heck. Better than no games though.

@Kcmatt7 band, cheerleaders, families, and me! Spread students out and all past COVID infected kids, meaning probably all fb players.

The PA and our good people at Rock Chalk Video will have to up their game for sure.

A sellout is all available seats sold. If only 3000 available it would still be a sellout. There is one concern taken care of😁

The mystique of AFH would remain. The history that is part of the atmosphere would still be there.

But without the crowd noise, some of the situations would change. There would be no deafening roar that could disrupt the timing and communication on the court. There would be no crowd energy to feed off of during a run.

It would make for an interesting test in how valuable home court is, for sure.

Ahh ok , you sure ? - that IS a relief if that's true cause sure would hate to see that string end because of this virus. - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

It might scare opponents. Back in my school days I lived just down from Naismith Drive on Alabama. Every chance I got I would come play ball in AFH, often alone in the gym. That building never stays too quiet. Many say it is haunted from the legends of the game. It makes constant sounds, often very loud sound... probably from metal expanding or whatever.

Anyone else in here have experience in AFH when it was empty?

Jun 23, 2020 08:30 PM #11

Been in an empty AFH a few times. It has the feel of a cathedral.

Don't know about it being haunted, but you can definitely feel the aura, enhanced by the memories of games past.

The times I've been in there when it's empty were when there was lightning in the area when I was at baseball games and a during the summer walking around Booth when the team store was still in that location and going into DeBruce.

I spent a lot of time in the Fieldhouse when it was empty. I worked for the team store.

It is still insanely cool. Something about that place.

Would you rather the arena be empty, or 20% capacity allowed in?

Jun 24, 2020 10:58 PM #19

@Kcmatt7 20% band parents cheerleaders
