Calipari has Failed! • Nov 16, 2013 02:46 AM

While "Mr. Perfection" was busy trying to be perfect in his loss to MSU, "Mr. Perfection" had no idea that not only his team played that night be he was being played.

Izzo is a master mind, and he knows there is a chance MSU may face UK in March. He never tried to stop Randle, even though Payne had foul trouble, Izzo has some tricks up his sleeve. Izzo knows Xs and Os a lot better than Calipari, and you can bet if they meet in March, there is no way that Randle dominates to the degree he did last Tuesday. In preparation for another game, Calipari will look at this first game and he'll discount a more-rounded offense with the hopes of doing what he did in this game; dominate with Randle. Izzo will be prepared next time... you can bet he'll be doubling down in the post and trying several twists to interrupt the feed into the post, something he wouldn't expose in November.

Calipari was played and he still has no idea of it... because he is busy "striving for perfection!"

Man... IowaJayhawk... where you been hiding?

It's great to have your feedback! You have something to offer so keep posting!

Meanwhile back at the ranch... one sports newster has already proclaimed Duke as the NC winner next year!

Ha... wouldn't count on that, young fella!

Goshdurnit!

I feel like I've been left out of the loop.

I'm going to visit my attic and dig around for some apparatus from the 70s. Hopefully, there will be some old tar residue left in something that will be enough to pull me into this conversation. It wouldn't take much!

Might give me some insight on defining "PHOF!"

"Shaunster" huh?

My father is in his 80s and once told me, "never trust anyone with -ster at the back of their name... it can only remind you of dumpster!"

Well redblueku, can't say it is shocking news.

The ultimate insult I felt from KUSports, after they insisted on "legitimizing" their comments by exposing identities came a few weeks after they dropped the hammer when I caught a spammer posting one of those "I made $2893 in my spare time..." in their comments. Kind of made me feel like all my efforts there fell below the bar of some spam marketeer.

KUSports needs to turn the reins of that website over to someone savvy in online sports news and blogs. Instead, it appears obvious, they have someone from the traditional news media at LJW calling the shots.

I wasn't a journalism major, but I bet I could turn that site around within a week, and keep it tasteful and build a respectful brand. I'm sure others on this site, and some of the old posters from KUSports could do the same. It's actually a plus not to have a background in journalism. You can't lump sports news into the same parameters as world or local news. Reporting and possessing a news site focusing on flooding in India shouldn't operate the same way as a site focusing on sports. The audiences are partially the same, but the intent of why they are there is different. Sports fans need to be understood in the context of why they are participating. They want to read news using honorable journalism standards, but they also want to read all the twists and slants concerning their players and teams, conferences and even the teams they hate! And many want to vent emotions and beliefs, in a format that allows them to while remaining anonymous.

The entire process brings a group of fans together in various forms of love-hate relationships. Imagine running a relationships site and operating it only from the perspective of traditional journalism? Good luck with that, but that same dryness is there on KUSports.

KUSports needs a revamp. I'd be happy to help show them the way if they contact me and bring me on board. I'm not holding my breath... and I understand why they are unlikely to reach out. It isn't easy to sit on your identity and listen to someone outside give them advice on updates.

I will give them a clue... the updates involve policies, visual media, site format and riveting writing. It could be set up apart from what they have now and structured in a test run to see if it draws positive attention before making a total commitment. In fact, it could always be kept apart from what they have now.

OMG... what a pipe dream... but what do you expect from a site called "Horn Sports?"

Might as well make it catchy and call it "Horny Sports!"

Pretty hilarious read... especially how this 'writer' could have never guessed CS would be interested in going to Texas after his recruitment of the "Andrew Wiggins clown show."

Andrew Wiggins clown show? Really? Saying phrases like that expose the delusion in Austin. Yes, Statmachine, you nailed it with your comment; if it was all about money, CS would be coaching basketball 7 months out of the year and would be managing oil wells for T.Boone in his "free time."

The final knock on reality in that spewgyism followed the shocking announcement of Self leaving Lawrence to become a Longandhorny, I mean Longhorn, when the 'writer' mentioned that they wouldn't replace Barnes with Self if Barnes can at least take his team deep in the NIT. What a slam to Self! He isn't even valued above a few games in the NIT!

Luckily, I wasn't eating chicken while reading that, because I would have surely choked on the bones! No wonder they only eat Longhorn steaks down there... no choking! (no joking!)

Calipari has Failed! • Nov 15, 2013 07:01 PM

Right on, Konkey.

You are right, and humans need to wake up every morning and reach for a higher place. But that is different than what Calipari did. He played the role of Reggie Jackson pointing to the fences, and he didn't hit it over.

That's not fair to this team, because they have the potential to do everything except the grand slam.

Perfection is never reachable. That doesn't mean we don't try to be the best we can, but to imply it is something we can reach then you've already built in a false sense of achievement you may reach and then quit trying harder because there is no place to go once you reach 'perfect.'

I've been blessed with some of the best coaching on this planet and I never had a coach talk about perfection or ever mention that word. When a word like that leaves a coach's mouth he has pretty much lost his following of those who aren't delusional because it places an end place of achievement, and if you are delusional enough to accept that you could get there, you will probably believe you have reached it at some point, and you won't even come close.

The most obvious example of misusing that word in sports falls in track and field. How can you achieve perfection in 100 meters? Is there a time that can never be beat? Of course not. And if there is, it would surely be some kind of act from God or a higher power used to get there.

Calipari's words place him on a throne in some kind of Godly kingdom, declaring he knows where 'perfection' is, because surely he could define it if he is reaching for it. He put it above Bobby Knight's undefeated season because he said it had never been reached. So where is that place... perfection?

Speaking of Bobby Knight.... since he had the undefeated season.. I'd like to hear him comment about Calipari striving for perfection. I bet he'd be critical in concrete terms and would do a better job of critiquing it than I have in this thread.

Gheez... now there is a 247 rumor trying to cover their bases. Isn't this the site that basically guaranteed he was going to the Illini because they did some kind of statistical regression from all the sports media from around the country, and the majority of them had him going to the Illini?

I bet none of these guys even know he's dating someone at Kansas... not that that will be a factor, but it could be.

I think he picks Kansas because:

  1. Our CS hi/lo offense was built for his style of play.
  2. We develop big men better than anyone else, including strength training.
  3. He seems to have hit it off with the existing players well.
  4. Jerrance Howard.
  5. Girlfriend in Lawrence.
  6. And I can go on and on...

I don't even factor in who goes and who stays because I believe Cliff will get floor time regardless of who is here. The best combo punch would be him playing beside Perry....

I don't have a crystal ball, and neither does 247 (or an inside source). And I was wrong with Randle.... but I'd put my prediction record up against the media fluff any day of the week!

Kevin Durant on Wiggins? • Nov 15, 2013 06:28 PM

Thanks for the link.

It's a good read, especially at the end, when Durant talks about all the opportunities these players receive even before college ball. Feeds into my earlier thoughts that the OADs of today are not really on the same level as just a few years ago because they go into turbo-development before college.

If anyone has a good link on info concerning Turner, please post it. I heard a while back that we had him wanting to sign but now he's looking at Texas hard.

I know CS was licking his chops on Okafor, but maybe Turner is the better pick as a Jayhawk. He seems to be on the bubble as to being an OAD or TAD, and that means more wiggle room for PT and a player seeking out development. Turner is built more like Withey and JoJo... so we have experience with this type of 5 and he seems like a natural to become a major shot blocker at Kansas.

Our defensive structure is built around having a solid shot blocker on the post. We like an aggressive man-to-man with guards going high to limit the trey, and in doing so, opens up drives to the lane where we keep our shot blocker. It wasn't all Jeff Withey who earned those blocking records... it was a combination of Withey and our defensive structure that allowed him to rack up those numbers.

If I'm a 5 built like Turner, I'd want to be at Kansas. And Kansas should want a guy like Turner!

Read something interesting in the comments below. Something about UL running out of scholies so they might not be able to sign Myles Turner.

The Cliff post gives me optimism.

From what I picked up on Cliff, he's an intelligent guy, and I doubt he'd be laying down his hand before 3pm, and it would be if the FiveStarRecruits Predictions are true. I'm thinking he is getting a chuckle right now as all the media flies are swarming around his tweet and already proclaiming him gone to Illinois.

I hope Cliff understands that he'd get all the PT minutes he could handle next year as a Jayhawk... regardless if we keep Perry and JoJo.

Self would take these three and make the rotation for the 4 and 5 spot, which in a proper CS hi/lo means running two 4s. The only difference is on defense, where the presumed 5 would guard the other team's 5 (typically).

I really won't get it if we don't sign Cliff. That would be two awesome PFs in a row we missed on, even though we have the absolute best offense to showcase their talents (hi/lo).

My guess is other recruiters sell the idea that he wouldn't have to share the light with Perry if he signed with them. But why wouldn't a star recruit want to share the post with someone like Perry, because it would prevent the double downs and let them shine in their one year as a college player!

I've received them and given them... a team player.

Always makes me think of Batman's graphics.

JoJo Embiid: Son of Withey • Nov 15, 2013 02:58 AM

I remember Withey's early games as a Jayhawk. JoJo reminds me of an early Withey; tall and thin and trailing the ball to the rim and rarely catching up to it!

Unfortunately, I doubt we have JoJo's services long enough to see him blossom to the talents Withey grew in to... but who knows?

I wonder how many of these people picked Wiggins to Kansas? Uh... maybe 3%.

Through your link I tracked their yack about Alexander. According to these dingalings Alexander has a 52% chance of going to Illinois and a 43% chance to Kansas. What are those stats based on? Absolutely nothing. Just the ideas of other sports media from around the United States.

Calipari has Failed! • Nov 14, 2013 06:36 PM

Once again, Coach John Caiipari has failed. He has failed to satisfy his own twisted concept of success by failing to meet his own standards of creating perfection in college basketball.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here is a link to an easy read on Calipari and his chase to perfection -

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/05/16/john-calipari-were-chasing-perfection/ ↗

(The most-telling part of this read is in the comments that follow. These comments seem to represent what is felt throughout America; Calipari is hated and only a certain part of the Kentucky fan base will defend him in manners... well... manners lacking manners!)

For some reason, Calipari doesn't seem to buy into one of the common understandings of the human condition; that man is not built of perfection. Perfection is never obtainable in any aspect of man's world.

The fact that Calipari speaks in "God-like" theory has created more disapproval (and hatred) of him as a person and a coach than the fact that he has landed the biggest chunk of top recruits in the past 5 seasons. Other coaches have enjoyed periods of monopolizing the talent pool similar to Calipari, but in a world not dominated by OADs, and none of those coaches receive the hatemail Calipari does.

I feel sympathy for Calipari's players. The current class of freshmen signed by Calipari may be the best class of freshmen ever to sign in one year, and that seems to be the only statement left that can separate them in distinction from previous classes, players or teams. Because of their loss to MSU on Tuesday, "perfection" has been scrapped from the list of potential acknowledgements or even the potential of becoming college basketball's greatest team ever because Bob Knight's '75-'76 team failed to lose in an entire season.

Calipari's own statements and the loss on Tuesday has built the descriptive framework around this team; mediocrity! This team can reach no higher than winning another National Championship, which one team has always done every year, and can be the only path to earning a single distinction of maybe beating out the Fab Five as best freshmen class coming in. I said 'maybe' because for many in sports media, this team will never reach the Fab Five, even if they earn a National Championship. But don't take it from me, read it yourself:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2013/11/13/college-basketball-caucus-is-kentucky-freshman-class-better-than-the-fab-five/3517221/ ↗

Now, back to why I feel sympathy for this Kentucky team. I enjoyed Tuesday match-up between Kentucky and MSU. Before the game, I was positive MSU would crush Kentucky. After seeing the first half, I felt comfortable that the hammer would drop in the second half. It didn't. Kentucky held their own against a quality, experienced team that is coached by one of the best. Kentucky impressed me beyond any thoughts I had before that game. Randle already looks unstoppable, Young has scary talent, and the rest of the team is still playing with a case of 'freshmanitis' so who knows what they are capable of!

None of that matters now. Their season has been lost to Calipari's own words. All the great basketball yet to come by these extremely gifted athletes will fall into the shadows of history because the light will forever be cast on what they didn't achieve; Calipari's twisted "perfection."

I sympathize with these kids who are so gifted but can't earn their own light above their coach's light. Kentucky basketball isn't about the players, it is about the coach. It will always be that way for Calipari, and it will always diminish the attention those players should receive. I can't blame young HS players for being drawn to playing basketball at Kentucky, after all, Kentucky is a blue-blood program and is distinguished with owning many records setting them apart. These young players are unaware of the fact that their achievements at Kentucky will always fall below their own coach's words and they'll be playing for the most-hated coach in college basketball. They'll carry that burden with them their entire life and they won't deserve it... all because they signed the dotted line with Kentucky, one of the greatest traditional basketball schools in all the land!

JoJo Embiid: Son of Withey • Nov 14, 2013 05:13 PM

I miss Jeff Withey.

I don't miss his offense, or lack there of. I miss his post defense. Withey represents the ultimate lesson for how to block shots.

Withey murdered the concept that blocking shots was about jumping. Big leapers don't make the best shot blockers. Tall guys with long arms and good timing seem to have more going for them. The key is to not leave your feet early. Offensive players quickly realize when they can get a defender to leave his feet early. They test the waters early in games with head and shoulder fakes, ball fakes, and anything else they can use to telegraph their shot. Getting a defender to take off too soon is the surest way to draw a foul on the defender. The whistle will not be protested by anyone, including the guilty player.

So how does a post defender block a high number of shots if he hesitates to leave his feet early? By applying axis basketball to shot blocking, that's how. Shooters are always at a disadvantage because the shot process requires some kind of form in order to be successful at dropping the ball in the hole, and form takes time to accomplish, valuable milliseconds that create an advantage to the defense. Shooters are always at a disadvantage because they have to leave their feet and commit before the shot. Once they've left the ground, they can't return to it with the ball still in hand. So the shot blocker actually has several advantages going into the entire process of defending the rim.

By applying Z-axis principles, a shot blocker must realize there are only a couple of potential paths for the ball to take to make a basket once the shooting player leaves his feet; he can take the path directly to the rim, or he can use the backboard. By knowing the two possible paths to the goal, a good shot blocker will position himself so he can make a block swipe that passes through both paths.

So if most shot blockers know the paths the shooter is going to take, how can the shooter ever win and score? Good scorers can score on most defenders by controlling timing. By knowing how to draw the blocker in the air too soon, or by getting out so far ahead of the blocker that the blocker will trail the ball going by on the path. This method of scoring has become harder and harder to accomplish because the coaching of shot blockers continues to improve and that helps reduce the success of this method.

There is one other method shooters use to score over or around blockers. Shooters have come to realize they can create shooting space where the blocker can't reach now or sometimes ever to swat the ball. For example, shooters often use their body to shield the ball, and shooters know they have the whistle on their side and when body contact occurs, they have an opportunity to get fouled and still make the shot. There is a gray area involved with this strategy, and this is where shooters make mistakes and give opportunities for good shot blockers (like Withey) to counter their move by getting to the path space on time. Few shooters work on achieving a fail safe shot that pretty much can't be blocked. An effective hook shot is the most obvious method of a fail safe shot (if performed properly). Most shooters won't take the time to master a hook shot.

I don't think many people realize just how good Withey became at blocking shots. Withey was not a leaper. I believe his pro workout exposed his vertical to be something like 20-something inches. To most people who don't understand axis basketball, that would make him a dud shot blocker. Withey benefited by not being able to jump! Yes, you heard me right! Since he couldn't make up for other weaknesses by the jump, Withey had to rely solely on his skills to block shots. Those skills were based around first knowing the shot paths he was defending. Then he knew he had to have at least one hand in immediate proximity of those paths. That mostly required him to move his feet and keep his arms up where he only needed a quick response to extend into the path. The biggest skill Withey had related to timing. This part was all brain work. His brain analyzed shooters moves to the point where he could accurately estimate when and where they would leave their feet to attempt the shot. Once he mastered that, he only had to make sure he put a hand in close proximity of the possible paths. He became so good at it that he set blocking records without being a major leaper or even having good quick feet! Replay him on offense to see how he wasn't a gazelle with his feet. And the best part was that Withey never had to leave his feet early... so he avoided foul trouble!

Withey's skills were so complete; he mastered the final part of blocking a shot and keeping the ball in bounds. His efforts were rarely for nought, because when he made a block it typically resolved into a possession win for our team.

Jojo is a unique big man. He has gifted feet, and it is those nimble feet that have NBA scouts gushing to sign him. What he has other big men can not easily acquire. For as hard as Jeff worked on shot blocking, he can't obtain feet like that with the same amount of work, or he would have done it. Jojo's footwork gives him potential to do everything Withey did and much more, especially making him lethal on offense, an area Jeff always had trouble in.

I don't know what JoJo's vertical is, but I venture to say it must far exceed what Jeff could do. If he can grasp what it takes to become a successful shot blocker, his vertical can help him, but if he uses his jumping as a crutch to avoid learning the science behind shot blocking, he'll never become the shot blocker Jeff was. And as I mentioned earlier, leaping is not at the heart of shot blocking anyways. What gives JoJo a clear advantage is his ability to use his feet to close the distance to the pathways without fouling. He should quickly become better than Jeff at this.

Will JoJo ever develop to become a great shot blocker? I hope so, but I don't know so. I'm sure he will eventually master the mechanics of shot blocking, which should at least make him a respectable blocker, but will he ever surpass Jeff? He'll have to master the intangible process of knowing when and where the paths are that shooters take, and that gets into the area of intuition and how the mind works... and Jeff may be the best to ever play the game in that area, because he sure didn't earn all those shot blocking records with his footwork and leaping ability!

Fortunate for JoJo... he has access to a video library stuffed with Withey stuffs!

Phof! Global!

Perry is proof that chemistry is king in college basketball. He's happy that Wigs is here to steal the spotlight, so Perry can take his lunch bucket to work in the shadows... racking up huge stats in the process to help his team win!

I believe Perry will be rewarded for his quality, mature attitude at the next level. Most NBA teams suffocate on all the egos staying busy creating chaos and problems preventing team cohesiveness. Perry is like a breath of fresh air and smarter management will see what a grab he is in talent and ability to play well with others!

Mason May Be KU's Direct Hit • Nov 14, 2013 03:41 PM

Awesome, HEM. I like how you call it straight and don't hide behind fears of not running with the pack, or fears that drive you to running in the pack. You have your own interpretations of the game, and that is what makes your postings so valuable. You don't just regurgitate other people's words.

I was on the early bandwagon for Mason. Not because I knew he would become a big asset to KU basketball. Because of my own philosophy on what PGs should be, and in my books, usually the players equipped to be good PGs are not 6'5" or so.

I think my longest posts on the old KUSports site involved me defending small PGs. I remember blowing up threads with Jaybate-length multi-posts about axis basketball and how the game is played on both X and Y.

My thrill began when we landed Tharpe. At the time, he didn't represent everything I want in a PG, but he was closer than we have had in quite some time. Mason was the next step and has all the tools for what I want running point. He's the reason I feel optimistic about our tournament chances for the next 4 years!

I had to change my diaper several times in that Duke game. I was in shock and total bliss at the same time; finally CS gets it! When he went with both PGs in the game, I knew he finally understood the X-axis. Finally he's on board to bringing in the right type of players at PG! He finally backed off the common thought that height is always the most-important factor when recruiting perimeter players. In my books, on the perimeter, height comes in third or maybe fourth. I do like height, but never at the cost of other factors that make a bigger impact.

We've all been trained to think height is what counts. Height isn't what makes Julius Randle effective. Sure, he holds his own in height, but it is his explosiveness, strength and skill that makes him the dominant player he is going to be this year in college basketball.... and he is a post player! He would still dominate if he was 6'5"!

Think of Mason as another Randle... except he is the PG version. Mason would whip Randle in a heads up with both running point, Randle would whip Mason in a heads up with both running at power forward. Both have the same toolset for success at their own position.

Both players are sitting in the gravy train this year because of the rule interpretation changes. Both will be able to bully their way into proximity to the rim and both will be able to easily create the space they need to score. Height will not be a factor for these two (for the most part). Mason can shoot around the bigs in the post just like Randle can. The effective pathway to the rim is the Z-axis, and there are several Z pathways to the goal at all times, you can use more of the X or Y axis to connect to one of them. Hey, Mason can jump, so he won't be all X-axis. Randle can jump, but he doesn't use all Y to leap over players, he uses plenty of X.

I'm looking forward to a great year of college basketball, and I'll enjoy all the athleticism we have, but I'll get an extra kick out of watching Mason use his tools to score on bigs. That is a special part of the game that I always love watching. We always have the classic big-on-big battles. Mason brings the little-on-big and I can't wait to see more!

To answer your question Chris... I don't think it works to bring Olajuwon to Lawrence, but if he's out there somewhere then Embiid could visit him and get some tips, like over Christmas.

I'm doubtful that would be interesting to Olajuwon... but a nice idea anyways.

Most of the development time happens over summer, when players have time to go to camps and private help situations... like when TT went over the summer to get help from John Lucas.

I might have to back peddle on my earlier comment.

I knew Randle was a beast... but holy cow that guy can play! He can not only use his size and push through the post, he can handle the ball and his body rather acrobatically for a PF!

The new rules interpretation plays perfect into his hands because he is allowed to drop his shoulder and level the boom this year!

We better start working on a solution now to stop him, or you can forget gold in March. Embiid is our best shot.

Black may not fill out a stat sheet but he does provide leadership from his experience and attitude. The other players like him and respect him. He's a glue guy and he'll prove to be valuable to us. And there will be times when his muscle comes into play. He's been solid on the boards.

Has the Embiid party arrived early? • Nov 13, 2013 09:24 PM

Jojo needs all the floor time he can get right now, because he lacks experience and has unbelievable upside. If he plays big minutes now we will be rewarded in March.

He needs the basics.... post moves, how to time and block shots without fouling, blocking shots and keeping them in bounds, keeping the ball up high when down low, free throw shooting... really everything.

Right now he is living off his nimble legs. It's enough to already value him more on offense than Withey as a senior. But I wish he knew the shot-blocking skills Withey had! Maybe Withey can visit over the holidays and work with Embiid. Imagine Embiid knowing not to leave his feet early and timing blocks correctly?

We are going to need a shot blocker this year because everyone already knows the answer is to drive the ball and score or draw fouls. Man I wish we had Withey this year!

I still see an excellent chance Embiid leaves after one year. Generally, I don't agree with all the early exits, but I can see why an NBA team would gamble on him. Our saving grace may be the fact that it will be a strong draft, however I'm not sure how many other decent 5s will be in it.

Embiid needs a shooting coach, especially to help him on the FT line. His mechanics are horrible, and though he shot ok against Monroe, he was exposed last night with his two bricks. He needs to learn a sound stroke and compress it to the point of removing all extra motion. That will pretty much end the brick toss and help him establish a respectable %. He has to shoot a few hundred every day and be strict with his form and focus. If he does it, he'll be respectable by March. Anything less and he'll be a total gamble at the line.

Nov 13: KU vs Duke Roundup • Nov 13, 2013 09:10 PM

Right, bskeet... Selden is under the radar. We've only just begun to see the skills he already has because he has been playing too conservative and tight early on as he figures out D1. He's still thinking too much, and it slows him down. Hard to imagine what level of ball he'll be playing at after Christmas!

Nov 13: KU vs Duke Roundup • Nov 13, 2013 07:11 PM

This game exactly fed into my posts this week.

The team with the least fouls wins. The reason why we played two PGs at the same time was Self wanted foot speed on the floor. He did it to limit PFs because he knew we had to win that battle. And by having Duke in foul trouble, it helped ease up the pressure on Wiggins because Duke would have directly targeted Wiggins to foul him out. AW3 is awesome, but he doesn't have the foot speed of Tharpe. Having two PGs out there should help slow down TOs and PFs while helping us put foot speed on the perimeter for driving into the post and drawing fouls. As I said yesterday, this game was a competition in fouls and fouls would determine the outcome.

My other point this week was the level of commitment I made to Mason. He's our secret weapon (for now) and he's the chemistry chunk we need on offense. The threat of his drives helps everyone on offense and it racks up tons of fouls on the opposition. This game represents the footprint for this entire season. We have to constantly push the drive and win the battle of fouls. The more we put other teams into foul trouble, the more it helps relieve our own foul troubles. Mason shot 12 FTs... equaling the most any two other players shot for us. What impressed me is his solid composure at the line. I'm sold on Mason. I'm not sure if it matters if he starts, but he has to get plenty of minutes every game. I like the idea of pushing Tharpe over in stretches to win the foul battles.

Embiid needs to start now. HEM is right on there. We won't stand a chance facing UK in March with Black in the post. He can make it no more than 5 minutes against Randle before getting in severe foul trouble. That fact won't change in several months. Black does not have enough upside to keep burning all those experience minutes on the floor. This reminds me of the situation last year and not giving more minutes to Perry sooner. I hope we don't make the same mistake this year.

If we want to have a legitimate shot at winning a NC it will only be there if we plan for it now.

  1. Free throws - every player takes 200 FTs every day, 7 days a week, until the season is over. Players like Embiid and Black have to have some weekly coaching on FTs and constant monitoring.

  2. Mason and Embiid - these guys need to get plenty of minutes from here on out.

  3. We understand the game as a battle on fouls and we have to win that battle every game. That means a lot of driving offense, and Mason has to be a big part of it.

Right on, bskeet!

If NBA GMs put potential at the top couldn't we see a Wiggins / Embiid one-two punch?

What I don't like is all the attention on it now. It creates chaos that we don't need and it creates motivation for Randle.

Randle doesn't have the upside of Wiggins or Embiid, but he isn't far from being in the top at PF elite in the NBA now!

I didn't really understand the "We need to win this one" article.

So we need to win this one but it's hard to get excited about any game in November... Kind of sounds like we are already making excuses.

How will we win a game we aren't excited about being in?

Does it work to say... "okay, we don't care about games in November but we are playing Duke so we want to win!"

I want to win this game for personal reasons. I don't want to take it on the chin within my own family, which is a mix of KU and Duke. Otherwise... I'm game for a beat down and starting this season with a bubble burst and reality check. I'm pretty sure that is the best formula for us to improve quickly. Something to counter the curse of SI covers and hype run amuck.

JayDocMD... thanks for the link.

I read the article and it wasn't really fair on Goodman. It took some of his stuff out of context. Goodman's comment about Wiggins being the 5th or 6th greatest player at practice wasn't about slamming Wiggins, it was about mentioning how good the other players are around Wiggins.

Everyone knows it is way too early to pick a #1 selection in the draft. And for some reason, being #1 means so much more than being #2 or #3. Pretty amateurish concept since teams usually pick for what they need... so if they need a 4 or a 3, or size and weight more than speed, they determine going with one over the other. Teams interview, have good and bad relationships with agents.. and on and on and on.

Personally, I think Wiggins has the best chance of going #1 because his freakish speed and jumping makes him a rare catch, more so than Randle and his post strength. So, in my books, Wiggins will have a better shot at going first, but that doesn't mean Randle won't become a more-valuable asset to the team that picks him. And as I said above, Randle could go first because the team with the first pick needs strength in the post.

Both Wiggins and Randle are top picks, that's all that matters and shows both are elite.

However... Wiggins caught a rocket to the top, so it is natural he'll descend sometime. The hype has been unreal... to the point of becoming surreal.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 09:57 PM

I agree with all.. Greene is going to be a great one. If there is an issue with Greene it may be that he's coming around a bit slower on "Self ball" but when he does get it he'll have to earn some minutes somewhere.

With the rule thing we are going to need Greene and Conner this year, you can count on that. They may not see many minutes in games we don't have foul trouble, but I'm fairly certain we'll have foul troubles in many games this year, maybe half!

Tonight, I'd have Naa run things TO-free, and inject minutes of Mason with some football pads on and tell him to drive and draw fouls.

We'll have to put them in as much foul trouble as we will be in if we expect to win.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 08:33 PM

I've seen the bumper sticker already:

"Recruit'em all and let God sort'em out!"

Maybe I had a flashback. Yesterday was Veteran's Day.

It's still not too late to take a vet out to lunch.

Nice, Blown!

We need to use material like that to inspire the troops.

KU Sports - Nov 12: Game Day Coverage • Nov 12, 2013 05:42 PM

If that had been Duke... yes... but I don't think Michigan is enjoying playing flag basketball any more than we do.

; )

My new slogan for this year is:

"Make it count!"

KU Sports - Nov 12: Game Day Coverage • Nov 12, 2013 05:33 PM

I believe the team with the least fouls wins.

The team with the most fouls losses.

I know I'm redundant... that is my intent.

Naa has to step up and lead the freshmen to victory.

"Play tough defense, but don't foul!" F&%# that! Play tough defense, and when you feel the whistle coming let the foul count with a heavy shot! You can foul less, but make the fouls you get called for count!

Punish... punish... punish!

Don't let the prepsters steal the game of basketball away from every city court in America! You are defending the game of basketball... the game born from Dr. Naismith! His spirit remains in the rafters, and he never intended it to be controlled by some "no contact" prepsters.

Knock Bilas and his pansy Dukeys back to finishing school in Calcutta. I don't want to trade volleyball for basketball. I want to see some lock down. If you have to reach out and hand check, make it count and grab his jersey and bring him down!

Make it count!

KU Sports - Nov 11: Duke Preview • Nov 12, 2013 12:50 AM

I think my two big rants this past week were on the nose...

First... our FT% potential this year looks frightening.

Second... the rule interpretation issue would not only ruin the game, but would punish teams like CS' because Self-ball is built around defense... man-to-man and lock down the biggest threats. Fouls will eat us alive and force us to back off on d because of all the fouls.

We do have a secret weapon this year... and it's not Wiggins, Selden or Embiid. No... not AW3, Black or Naa. No... not Perry, he's a known weapon. Conner... great shooter, but no.

Mark my word... on Veteran's Day drgnslayr made the commitment.

Our secret weapon will be Mason.

Think about it. Mason can drive. Mason likes to drive. Mason is built like a mini-bulldozer. Mason takes good care of the rock. Mason draws fouls! Mason can draw a lot of fouls! Add Mason's drives with Wiggin's drives with Selden's drives..... we can force a lot of fouls ourselves!

See where I'm going with that? Tomorrow will be a lesson. I'm afraid we may be the ones getting the lesson, but that's fine. Anything to push these guys forward. I said this before in my rant, Duke will be driving the ball. Their ball handlers will be dropping their shoulders and pushing for contact. It's the offensive version of flop basketball. And they'll be flopping on defense, too. Defensive flops will have to be done if a team wants to get any charging calls.

Why can't we take advantage of the new rules? Coach K will. He mastered the defensive flop and he'll master the offensive flop. We have to do the same. We have to take advantage of the rules every bit as much as Coach K will.

I did notice that Naa said Self has pressured him to drive more. Was that a clue to what we can expect to see tomorrow night? Naa is such a key this year because of his stability and protection of the rock, but we'll still need our PG to draw fouls this year. Naa has to step up and drive the ball and get the foul call. If he doesn't do it we know Frank will.

It will help us to have Naa back. Tomorrow will be a battle, but not necessarily what we would typically expect. Tomorrow will be a battle of who can survive with the least fouls.

Most likely, this entire season will be a season where we have to go to "foul battle" with every team we face!

I don't know the entire Duke lineup, but I hope we have more depth in comparison, because we will surely need it.

Funeral for a Friend (Game of Basketball) • Nov 11, 2013 04:36 AM

I was on the road this weekend, and just caught the game on my DVR.

The Hawks committed 27 fouls against Marilyn Monroe Louisiana. JFK didn't get that many touches!

My over/under for KU PFs for the Duke game was 25. Obviously, I'll have to adjust that number. 30? 40?

I think my original rant on the rule changes (interpretations) now may get more attention.

I hope Tyler Self can play on Tuesday... we may need the entire bench!

What really stinks with all this is the idea that players will adapt and back-off so less fouls will be called. Whoptee-friggin-do! As I said in my original thread, we can start the funeral procession for lock-down defense. Those days are gone!

So the college game receives more scoring, and muddled victories determined by Bilas' preppy ball rules... I'll be flipping the channel over to college volleyball... sometimes there is contact at the net!

Maybe inner-city kids will start playing baseball instead. (I'm serious)

College basketball is dead.

Long live college biscuitball!
