St. Joseph's Hawks. A battle of Hawks. A battle of Hawks trying to avoid an 0-2 start to their season.
I think with no modifier to what kind of hawk they are I believe mascot wise we have the upper hand. In the US there are 25 varieties of Hawks, none known as a Jay Hawk for some reason, so I'm a little suspicious of the website I found this information.
St. Joseph's Hawks immediately brings to mind one of my bad basketball memories. As a child growing up in Chicago I was all over the DePaul Blue Demons. After a final four in which they nearly knocked Larry Bird out (ruining the legendary Bird-Magic final) DePaul added some studdly recruits like Terry Cummings and they were all set. They'd lost once all year by a point. Big favorite to win it all, ranked #1 almost all season. 85% DePaul FT shooter missed a FT with like 2 seconds left, STJ guy cherrypicked at the other end and he scored an uncontested layup to win. Ray was a great coach but his guys weren't coached up very well that day. Probably his best chance to win was that season.
So I still kind of hate STJ's unknown variety of Hawk.
Since STJ is a Philly school, I can't help but think of my favorite Philly coach's moment with the coach of the team we play Tuesday. How many of us have dreamed of being John Cheney in a moment like this?
As for today I know little about them. They lost yesterday in OT which on a holiday means at least they got paid double time for those extra five minutes. Auburn beat them which is also receiving votes. It should be noted that the votes they received were the mail in variety so the Trump administration is demanding a recount. It's kind of a weird prestige to Also Receive Votes. Imagine going to a recruit and telling them "Come play for us and you'll also receive votes"?!?! The self esteem of those Not Also Receiving Votes (NARS) is quite devastating. Just ask any KState fan or Misery fans.
So I really don't know what to expect today. You can chat about it here. Or somewhere else if you want or with your wife, significant other and insignificant other.
