I'm not sure very many are interested in the football program. Sad. Very sad. But, I signed up for ESPN+ and I'm encouraged by the decision to start Bean at QB. At least he has considerable starting experience and gives us the run/pass option at QB. It's a new season and another new coaching staff. RC

Sep 03, 2021 11:58 PM #2

KU tweaking their helmets and going with the white face mask instead of gray or chrome and I really like that look.

Sep 04, 2021 12:09 AM #3

OK, stopped them on 4th and 5. Now let's hope the offense can move it.

Sep 04, 2021 12:13 AM #4

OLine might actually be worse this year based on the first two drives.

Sep 04, 2021 12:14 AM #5

Welp. Settle down, guys.

Sep 04, 2021 12:18 AM #6

I can't say Leipold looks like he knows what he's doing.

Sep 04, 2021 12:19 AM #7

That's not looking good with Burt.

Sep 04, 2021 12:22 AM #8

@Texas-Hawk-10 did he break his arm? I only caught a bit of it.

Sep 04, 2021 12:22 AM #9

Giving SD short fields to work with. Its not looking good.

Sep 04, 2021 12:23 AM #10

Bean has a pretty strong arm, just needs to not stare down receivers.

Sep 04, 2021 12:23 AM #11

gonna be the same three commercials over and over again isn't it

Don't know, they didn't show a replay. I wouldn't be surprised if he broke his arm or wrist based on having the air cast.

He has a plan but I'm not sure KU has the players to execute it yet. His history indicates he likes running the ball a lot, but KU's oline leaves much to be desired.

Sep 04, 2021 12:24 AM #14

@DanR But, I'll learn that dance by half time

Sep 04, 2021 12:27 AM #15

He absolutely knows what he's doing. You don't win 6 D3 titles without knowing how to build and maintain a program. Even his first couple of years at Buffalo were really rough. As long as the admin gives Leipold the time, he'll make Kansas competitive in years 3 and 4 when all these young players become upper classmen.

This year and next are probably going to be pretty rough though.

Sep 04, 2021 12:29 AM #17

Hate to pick nits, but three yards in each of three plays is not a first down, man

Sep 04, 2021 12:33 AM #18

We are gaining a lot of yards horizontally

Sep 04, 2021 12:37 AM #19

The OLine is going to severely limit what the offense can do. I would love to see KU push the ball down field like the announcer said, but the OLine doesn't appear capable of holding blocks long enough for those type of plays to develop.

Sep 04, 2021 12:39 AM #20

First Q: 10 yds rushing and 8 yds passing on 1/3 plays. YIKES!!!

Sep 04, 2021 12:39 AM #21

The defense looks like it has some potential to be decent this year and keep KU in some games, but I think we're going to see them wear down later in games though because of how bad the offense will be.

Sep 04, 2021 12:40 AM #22

Yeah the defense can only hold up so long when the offense can't stay on the field at all.

Sep 04, 2021 12:41 AM #23

four KU punts in the first quarter...

Let's go

Sep 04, 2021 12:44 AM #24

suction cup hickeys on Bean's shoulders. OK. Thought that fad was past

Sep 04, 2021 12:47 AM #25

At least the offense is gaining enough to make the SD offense go the length of the field. We need a TO

Sep 04, 2021 12:52 AM #26

has either team thrown anything beyond 15 yards?

Sep 04, 2021 12:55 AM #27

Way too much time for the SD QB to throw.

Sep 04, 2021 12:55 AM #28

good d series by #3 boroughs. Two big plays

Sep 04, 2021 01:12 AM #29

OK, we should finally get good field position. Plenty of time to score. RC

Sep 04, 2021 01:18 AM #30

All Bean on offense.

Sep 04, 2021 02:34 AM #31

He lost his head on the 4th down play

Sep 04, 2021 02:37 AM #32

Still watching... could be worse, but jeez the offense

Sep 04, 2021 02:54 AM #33

Brilliant call, Coach ! Way to take points off the board !

Sep 04, 2021 03:04 AM #34

I'm a sadistic idiot. Watching this is very painful , Sooo I stopped watching. - - Our O-Line is STILL our O-Line.

Sep 04, 2021 03:08 AM #35

So, KU will be winless again I see.

Sep 04, 2021 03:10 AM #36

Still in it

Sep 04, 2021 03:11 AM #37

Dammit, we’re gonna win this.

Sep 04, 2021 03:11 AM #38

😮‍💨

Sep 04, 2021 03:14 AM #39

🤕

Sep 04, 2021 03:14 AM #40

Huge call. Refs cost us on that 4th down call. This would make up for it nicely.

Sep 04, 2021 03:16 AM #41

Don’t score too quickly.

Sep 04, 2021 03:17 AM #42

Believers in shambles.

Hopefully we just see progress throughout the year.

I hate we storm the field

Sep 04, 2021 03:27 AM #61

And we're storming the field for beating South Dakota. I'll be happy when our fans don't storm the field just for winning.

Is this where we make a stop the count joke since KU is the only Big 12 team that has played a game?

I'm excited we have a coach that doesn't need a guide dog.

Sep 04, 2021 12:19 PM #73

Well at least we found our QB. I hope that is something the offense may build upon. RC

Sep 04, 2021 01:37 PM #74

What grade are we giving Scott Fuchs and the offensive line? Call me impatient, but I was going to suggest his immediate firing during halftime. We seem to be the only program that can't field a decent offensive line. During one play in the second half, two defensive players were 20 yards behind our line of scrimmage chasing QB Bean.

He's the third OLine coach this group has had in a few months. This coaching staff also did not have a spring practice to install their system because they were hired after spring practice concluded, including Fuchs. The offense will be a mess and pretty basic this year because of that lack of install time.

Leipold is a good coach and will make KU better. That will not happen overnight and he didn't even make Buffalo competitive in the MAC until year 3. Leipold doesn't run the same system Dearmon did last year so it will take time for Leipold to recruit players to fit his system.

Patience is an absolute must because KU finally had a coach who knows to build and sustain winning programs.

A win is always nice but I think W/L is a relatively meaningless metric to look at this season.

I’d like to see steady improvement, good decision making and a willingness to compete in all facets. And I’d like to see evidence of the cultural shift that we’re all hoping for by talking the talk and walking the walk.

We may not yet have the talent and “Leipold’s guys” in place but I am high on this coaching staff and their attention to detail and I do think Leipold and Co. is the right staff at the right time for our program. I see only good things coming for KU football.

There was one encouraging thing last night. That was Bean after we fell behind late took the ball after the kickoff and time running out was able to take the ball and came through in the clutch, placed the ball perfect for Arnold for the winning TD. In years past we would of been done after SD scored late.

At this point I really don't care who it was , it was a WIN - what was they saying 677 days without a win. So we have already won more then we did last year- Our O-Line STILL has a ton of work to do. - -Coastal Carolina hung 52 points up on the Citadel already. Gonna be rough just want to see the kids play competitive ball.

ONE thing probably just me honestly I thought we would of seen more of Neal last night - -ONE touch, sure thought we would see more Gardner just wasn't getting anything done, we have a bevy of Running backs try a different style of runner. - Hope this isn't a thing of our future of the running game - -we will see - -If it weren't for Bean we would of complette zero in the rushing game. - BUT it's the 1st game - -it was a w SO i'LL TAKE IT

Sep 06, 2021 01:08 PM #78

Given the poor play by the Oline, I wonder whether KU will ditch the technique of holding the line in the huddle, then rushing to the line of scrimmage for a quick snap. Doesn't that technique diminish our line's ability to settle at the line before the snap? I never played on an offensive line (5'7", 150 lbs), but I'm sure it's helpful for the Oline to study the defense before the snap.

Sep 06, 2021 02:18 PM #79

@stoptheflop I think they're doing it out of necessity, to try and throw the D off. The staff knows that our o-line sucks.

Possibly. I wonder, if that is a good strategy to use with a mediocre OL, should the Chiefs have tried it in the SB?

I think they did try, right? 😂

Sep 07, 2021 06:53 PM #82

@Marco It was really hard to tell exactly what they were doing!

Sep 07, 2021 08:09 PM #83

From what I saw I was relatively happy with how they played. Defense looked improved. We'll see how that looks the next game, but they did what they had to do to win.

I thought the offense didn't try to be anything they aren't, and that is something I really appreciate. We aren't going air raid with some noodle arm QB. We aren't running power I behind a small offensive line. We are basically lining up and running some spread option with a mobile QB.

Now the offense has a lot of potential improvements they can make... And the offensive line is still questionable at best... But it was a good enough start to the LL era.
