He's been serviceable all tournament. Tip of the cap. I've been hard on him all year.

@BShark was thinking about starting this thread. About as much as you can hope for from an injured back up. His jump hook has become a weapon and he has shown some ability to protect the rim.

Mitch Lightfoot has been awarded a 7th year of eligibility by the NCAA and plans to return

@BeddieKU23 - maybe KU should make a permanent student with permanent eligibility!

Apr 01, 2022 03:52 PM #8

@BeddieKU23 Read Self is thinking of trying to run him at the 3 spot. Says he shoots it well in practice and would love running 3 bigs together on the back line of a 2-3 zone he's been working on.

@benshawks08

Yeah I saw they are hoping in his 7th year he'll develop that touch at the FT line and from the perimeter:beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@BeddieKU23 If he gets in 1000 shots a day this summer no reason he couldn't be a 35-40% shooter from 3.

Lightfoot has been very solid. He is in the proper role, and Self has been wise to not overextend either him or McCormack during the tournament.

This is what we have been begging for the last two years - not to get rid of Lightfoot (or Big Dave), but to use them in line with their strengths.

Lightfoot has played more than 16 minutes only three times (twice in blowouts in the Big 12 tournament), and 17 minutes against Miami. That's just about perfect usage for him. He's been effective in just about every game, which is what you're looking for from backups.

McCormack has been even better. He's been used correctly, and has not been overexposed as an interior scorer. He's worked hard when on the floor and has boosted the team's energy (similar to the boost Remy has given when he is on the floor). Huge for KU, and could help boost them to a title.

Bill has also taken them off the floor in certain situational plays. He's put KJ at the 5 in a switch everything last minute defense. He's gone 5 guards when the bigs are struggling with the pick and pop. Thus, to your point, not asking these two guys to do what they aren't capable of doing.
