He resembles Mario to me, and shoots like him too. He drives to the basket like DD. I see why everyone was so hot to trot to get him.
It's been a while since KU had a PG that had good size. Really since Tyshawn Taylor. We have had lots of good PG in that time - Mason, Graham, Harris, among them - but not a PG with this kind of size and skill in combination.
The two things I like most about him are his size, which unlocks a lot of options in his game, and his ability to change speeds. There are lots of fast PG that are fast all the time. There are lots of crafty PG that keep you off balance with their shiftiness. Jackson looks like he can do both. He can hit the afterburners if he wants, or use his first step to get by, get the defender on his hip and then manipulate the defense with his size, strength and pace.
I hope he stays at least a couple of years, but he may have NBA offers before then.
I'm with you.... it appears he has the skill set we are used to, but also the luxury of size! His height, girth, and arm length should bode well for developing defensive skills, too.
I doubt he becomes an OAD, but you never know what is in the player's mind and what hype he will receive. I'm thinking he will be sharing PT with others so doubt he builds a complete resume in one year.
I would be surprised if Jackson ever starts at PG for us. Juan has 3 more years (2 overlap with Elmarko) so heāll be a 2 for his time at KU.

Yeah Dajuan is starting at PG as long as he is here. Should be a dynamic duo.
Great video, great kid.
Elmarko is from Jamaica, and is a 5th cousin to Usain Bolt.
@mayjay said in Welcome Elmarko Jackson!:
@Jethro I have no clue about any 2nd cousins, which requires common great-grandparents. 5th would require common great-great-great-great-grandparents. Might be easier to keep track in an island family!
I thought it was kind of cool. 5th cousin is way out there.
Lol. You guys (and football) have kept the off season interesting. Well done!
I think Iām could be a 5th cousin to the half the buckets reading list. Lol. Everyone with blue (or green eyes) traces back to a common ancestor- mutants. Ha.

And the common mutant ancestor was probably just marauding through, much further back. pillaging and leaving blue-eyed blond children behind all over.

Looks like he is just gliding out there. He's fast and quick, like Dotson was.
He's going to be a star. He's a better shooting version of Dotson. More polished on the offensive end with the prolific speed. And I love Dotson- one of my all time favs.
Those that scout him have said he's still a bit raw in certain areas of the game (makes sense since he hasn't played the sport that long) but man does he do a lot of things that translate to the next levels.
I see him fitting in well next to Juan in the backcourt next season.
Some people are not going to like my comparison (though I love it), but he gives me Tyshawn Taylor vibes. Decent shooter. Will be able to take his man off the bounce whenever he wants. But he is going to have moments where you scratch your head and wonder what the hell he was thinking.
Tyshawn was an All-American as a Senior and legitimately dominated the 2nd half of the season in that National Championship runner up 2012 team and he went on to play meaningful minutes in the NBA. So to me that is no slouch comparison... I know Tyshawn made some people want to pull their hair out, but overall he was a really solid player for KU. If we get that from Elmarko I'll be super happy.
Elmarko , - Explosive first step ? - - -Check- - - - - -Smooth Shot ? - - -Check - - - Sweet Court vison ? - - Check. Another future KU Stud? - -Check. What's not to like ? - -gonna be good I DO believe.
I like that comp as well. I settled on Dotson due to recency & my projection for how long he sticks around. They are/were both ranked around the same as well, both late bloomers.
I hope we get everything Tyshawn was without the mistakes. Elmarko will have his growing pains but hopefully playing alongside and learning from Juan is a real positive for him before he hopefully takes the keys over the year after.

Good Tyshawn- not bad Tyshawn. I think Elmarko 's step backs and shimmies are going to be sensational. Plus, he looks just like Mario.

@drgnslayr I'd give it a 1% chance.
Gradey is gone with the wind. Good for him!
While I selfishly can come up with 100 reasons Gradey should come back, you only need to know his draft stock to see he should go.
One thing is clear, no Jayhawk player has ever had as much fun playing here as Gradey! šā¤ļøš¾š¦š¼ his parents are clearly loving it too! š„³šš„

And Self will be advocating and pushing him to go.. The one guy that could take a selfish stand and try and change his mind is very unlikely to do so.
It's the right thing to do. Even with NIL. Getting guys drafted in the lottery is good for the program and recruiting.

Does he ever actually play PG here would be a question worth asking. I assume Harris will still be the lead guard most of the time. I ask that because there's a couple of sites out there already projecting Jackson as a borderline first round pick in '24 draft.
Also, does Harris have 1 or 2 seasons of eligibility left?
@Texas-Hawk-10 2. RS Senior next year then a Covid year
@Texas-Hawk-10 2 left
Yeah Jackson gonna be lead 2 fused depending on transfers
@kuballin10 said in Welcome Elmarko Jackson!:
@BShark yeah he looks good hard to judge high school stuff - no structure
Heck MJ looked awesome ala selden came here and couldnāt crack the rotation with a bad bench
Keep telling yourself that.
Watched some of the practice. Elmarko at 6'3 looks bigger then his height, he's got the coveted length. Saw him switching defensively on bigger dudes with no issue. He's super impressive and it's great to get these kinds of athletes in the program.
I will be completely shocked if he doesn't start here.
Yea I'm pretty sure Elmarko is going to force his way into the lineup.
He is going to be a MONSTER in transition. He's phenomenal going left. I mean I thought MJ would certainly be better as a freshman... But I never miss twice lol.
@Jethro Not sure how long youāve followed KU or recruiting but if you have youāll know what I mean.
I donāt get too high on guys until they get to campus and we start getting the insider reports from farmers and bshark on what staff is seeing and thinking.
Selby was my guy came out hot then lost his spot to Brady and tyrel not sure why or how.
Check Diallo, Cliff Alexander heck even Oubre got here and didnāt start.
Point was tempering expectations but hopefully Elmarko is the best guard in the class.
Appreciate you adding such substantial posts to the board you are solid
@kuballin10 Yea the reality is it takes special freshman to play well under Bill. Especially when Bill has guys he already trusts.
But I am high on Elmarko and how his game will fit with Bill's new style of play.

I hope heās the next great KU guard! Donāt need another pettiford lol. If we get a stud transfer though it means Jackson may come off the bench who knows.
Im already ready for next year. Portal Bill I like and he got a head start with our early out.
Elmarko will be playing, lol.
Elmarko is Dotson level, maybe higher.
@Kcmatt7 said in Welcome Elmarko Jackson!:
@BShark The length and vertical certainly give him a higher ceiling. May not get to see it in Crimson and Blue though.
Donovan Mitchell-ish. A second year would be a blessing.
@kuballin10 I'm hoping for more of a Sherron Collins '08 role... Guy who should be starting comes in off the bench and gives you 25 minutes lol.
@Crimsonorblue22 I'm sure they will be thrilled watching him sit on the bench in the pros, too. It's not bashing him - he's just not ready for the pros and he could help us win another National Championship. Plus - I automatically have a little chip for anybody that leaves KU early. Unless they are super financially strapped (he's not) and they need to help their families. That I understand.
@Kcmatt7 said in Welcome Elmarko Jackson!:

Depends on how we portal, imo.
Seems like we are targeting a guard to play off Juan. Good for competition and roster flexibility.
You can rest Juan, play Elmarko on the ball and have that other guard in the game which would be a 100% improvement from what we had this past season.
I know we have the freshman guards as well but a veteran will help that room so much.
@BeddieKU23 Yes

I think he had a foot problem that he tried to play through but couldn't jump off it, and couldn't defend IIRC. Starting late because of the (9 game?) NCAA sanction for impermissible benefits hurt him, too. Should have not gone pro, but his family was deeply impoverished, I think.
As always my memory may be affected by many drowned brain cells....

@Jethro I think in this thread heās been appropriately conservative. Not necessarily ānegative.ā
Fwiw
Iām sure Jethro is some long time poster but go look through his posts. Board contribution sucks and he rarely actually talks basketball. He supposedly blocked me yet continues to jump on anything I say that isnāt āKU is the greatest program of all timeā.
He sees when I say juan sucks but ignores when I say Juan was huge (see Arkansas game when Juan hit the 3 when we hadnāt scored in a long while to get us off 51).
Players get credit when they ball out. Players get discussed when they donāt. Some posters canāt grasp that and Iād estimate they are the type of parents āwhoās kids never do any wrongāā¦.the ones I canāt stand to coach as the kid is nice but the parents are crazy.
@Kcmatt7 I appreciate the back and forth and not assuming KU sucks just because I slowed the horses on anointing Elmarko the next great KU guard
Bill just did that with Pettiford and I thought he had Frank driving ability and turns out he regressed instead. Tough but until guys get to campus you donāt truly know.
Bshark and Farmer contribute to every single thread and discuss things back and forth. They call me out if Iām saying something they think is ludicrous but it doesnāt effect future posts on future topics to slant every single response from them towards me as āoh just cheer for someone elseā, āoh we are going 0-30 next year right KU ballināā¦..that response crap is childish and shows the maturity level of a 10 year old (not something farmer or bshark do).
@kuballin10 I totally get what you're saying. But I'd suggest you just block people that don't bring you joy on this website.
I personally like the artist formerly known as KUSteve aka Jethro. I find him to bring some humor to the website.
Last thing I'll say, just remember this is a fan site. But even moreso than like a 247 board. Think of how big of a KU Homer you have to be to find this place lol. A lot of crimson and blue glasses here. If you are going to be a bit more "measured" you're going to get some pushback... Just the nature of being that kind personality on a board of complete and total fanatics. Which we all are lol.
But keep posting. I really do enjoy the perspective you bring. Someone has to be the bear. No fun when everyone is all bulls.
@Kcmatt7 Well said on all fronts
Thatās funny I liked KuSteve and you are telling me thatās Jethroā¦.I about fell out of my chair
Great point on finding this place means diehard KU fans. I could go to 247 and join their hammering of Juan and Gradey or Wilson but I read that and get annoyed (oh the irony).
Neenyo was wrong on Braun and Ochai last year. He had some points this year when Gradey was hot and Wilson not kicking it across when driving the lane but than Gradey seemed to hit a wall and that theory I agreed with turned out wrong.
I wish weād ran more ball screens for Gradey maybe off 2 instead of 1 but Wilson was our best player and the man which neenyo will never admit to.
@Kcmatt7 yup all KU homers. A couple bordering on trolls, but itās just because their expectations are so high that they lose sight of reality. They constantly tear down the team looking for flaws to validate their fears, completely unable to enjoy the moment. I almost feel sad for them.

I can easily be in that groupā¦..vcu and oregon both had me down for over 7 days. I was sure those teams were getting Self his second title
Is the McDonalds game tonight ? - Is it on ESPN again
@kuballin10 That Frank never made a final four is truly astounding. How many great players under self who stay all 4 years don't get one? Can't be that many.
8,12,18,22.
I think only two Sr. classes (16,17) have not made a final four in their years under Self. Maybe his first class as well?

I'd be a lot less of a hardass on you if I could ever hear you say Bill has gotten better. Much better, and let go of the Jamari/ Diallo/ Bill won't play freshmen, etc crap that has already been proven false over and over again. The easiest job in the world is to throw bombs from the peanut gallery- we're always undefeated because we have no real skin in the game. We don't know what went into Landen starting over Diallo- yet we think we do. We think we're smarter than coach with a lifetime 82% win percent. Doesn't mean he's infallible- he makes mistakes every year. However, if you can't see the good in what Bill has done ( which is to create the best basketball dynasty in the game), then the problem is you- not him.
@Jethro Understood
Not your job to read my every posts and vice versa but pretty sure it has been discussed here about going back to hi lo or 2 bigs.
Iāve commented Self has grown tremendously because on a podcast he said he would never go back to that again. He has 1 true big and 4 guards now. Get the best players on the floor and play to their strengths. 1 Of the guards needs to be a true pg (why he loves Juan) and 1 of the guards needs to fit that 4 spot (Josh Jackson, Jalen Wilson).
Bill is best in the game I know Iāve said that and that this 6-10 year window heās entering as the best coach while others retired is where he can cement his already awesome coaching legacy.
I will always gripe about Billās lineups. He will play less athletic and worse players who run his stuff versus guys who forget some of his stuff and arenāt perfect.
A coach should know itās more jimmyās and joeās than Xās and Oās. The Xās and Oās matter but without ādudesā we wonāt win.
If I can interject, it should be remembered that a lot of us were scarred by our interactions with the Voldemart of this site in the years prior to when he left around the time of the 2020 world debacle. Let's not get overly sensitive and so reactive whenever we run into criticisms or comments that may seem vaguely similar or in the same vein.

How did El Marko do?
Some other observations from guys going to Big-12 teams.
Ron Holland- Texas- 6'9 do it all, can defend all positions.
Jacolbe Walter- Baylor- Good size for 2 guard, good shooter, defends.
Omaha Billew- Iowa St- Wish we got him, would have fit the 4 spot. Has a motor that mirrors Jalen already.
Brandon Garrison- Oklahoma St- Big Center with promise.
Observations from other guys
Jared McCain- Knockdown 3-point shooter, crafty with the ball. Picked Duke though.
Stephon Castle- UConn- Bucket getter
Isaiah Collier- USC- Top passer in the class, improved jumper, baller.
Aaron Bradshaw- 7 footer that's more comfortable shooting facing the basket then with his back to it. Needs weight
Justin Edwards- UK- was not impressed with what I saw. Chucker
DJ Wagner- UK- Will want to put up 25 shots a night. Chucker
Cody Williams- Colorado- No idea how Boyle landed him, might have the highest upside of all the burger boys. More prospect then finished product currently.

Agree with you on these but yet really hard to get a real good evaluation of them in a game like that. - Is there any REAL structure in a game like that ? -- usually the 1st one down the floor shoot.
There was a good deal of effort yesterday but yes a lot of me ball. Obviously a setting for that if you choose. Elmarko chose to play within the game. He will shine here when the lights are brighter. Watching the practice, scrimmage, jam fest and game its clear they got a really high character kid besides his immense talent
Goodbye Michael Jordan Rice? Haven't seen discussion of it but we hardly knew ye. Maybe he'll find his game somewhere else.
I am bummed about the Rice departure. The rest, no prob.
Iām guessing he thought he was an instant star, but in reality when on the floor it looked like he needed a few years to realize that potential.
@rockchalkjayhawk he was going to have to put in a heck of a lot more effort!
Sigh. true.
