Renovations to Allen Fieldhouse
Feb 28, 2023 01:40 PM #1

Self mentioned on Hawk Talk last night that plans for renovations to Allen Fieldhouse could be announced in the next week or so.

Probably overdue at this point.

Last updates:

  • 2009 - They updated the Booth Hall of fame. They widened the concourses, upgraded the restrooms, improved the locker room/film room/training room/player lounges. Added the bridge to the parking garage. Nothing major in any of this. $7.8M renovations.

  • 2005 - They added the Booth Hall of Fame. Added the current hardwood, added the current video board and sound system.

So it'll basically have been 20 years since we updated the court or scoreboard. I would expect both of those to happen. I think the bathrooms need updated. I think the concourse could still improve quite a bit. Another update to the player's area is due to keep up with the arms race. Will certainly be interesting to see...

I would imagine Allen Fieldhouse will be fitted with the highest quality lighting available... Whether it will be used for games is yet to be seen.

If they put in an AC, they'll be able to use Allen Fieldhouse a lot more. So having high-end lighting for other events would be a good thing.

I like that idea

Would putting AC in reduce the seating capacity though? Seems like there isn't enough room to run the ductwork without eliminating 2-3 rows of seats around the top of the arena.

@Texas-Hawk-10 you can put the A/C units on top and run minimal duct work. Too many banners maybe a bigger issue lol

Definitely needs AC. I have no problem with good lights, but the LED nonsense I was talking about was the strobe light/flashing crap that is the current trend in SEC basketball arenas and football stadiums. It's just silly. I'm sure they'll include it in the Memorial Stadium reno, but keep it out of AFH.

Are there any other arenas/fieldhouses left with windows? I had to suffer a stonehenge sunlight moment right at the end of the game against WVU saturday. It was beautiful.

@DanR I always liked the Windows, would love to go do an old venture when I retire to old venues. Like Hinkle and even Cameron just to do it. Get front row seats at Cameron wearing KU gear

Students should be returned to seats behind the benches. That's the only renovation I'd make.

It's really hot by those windows, but roomy🙄
