NFL Draft - 2023
Apr 18, 2023 09:17 PM #1

2023 NFL draft is coming soon, to be held in KC starting next week.

No matter which team you root for, let's take this thread to comment on the process - needs, wishes etc.

For Chiefs I see WR as biggest need but I'd like them to draft either DE or OT, best prospect in round 1, pick 31 and look for WR in round 2 or 3.

Apr 18, 2023 10:13 PM #2

Hmmm, the Chiefs do need a little bit of everything.

Not sure their O line is settled. Do they somehow move up to grab a true LT?

I'd grab a more dynamic RB somewhere in the draft. Pacheco starts, but CEH seems to be in the dog house with his plodding, straight ahead style. Sometimes works.

WR is still an issue. And Kelce is near the end of his career (33 years old). If he goes down (god forbid) we got problems.

Apr 19, 2023 03:21 AM #3

If Bjian Robinson rb from Texas fell and the chiefs drafted him heads would explode! He would be dynamic, but I’m hoping one of the top offensive tackle prospects falls low enough to snag. There doesnt appear to be much day one playable ot talent this draft. DL and WR in round 2/3 best player available.

Anton Harrison or Dawand Jones at 31
DE is a strong possibility as well.
WR -Tillman, AT Perry, ?

Apr 19, 2023 12:38 PM #4

I have seen a few mock drafts showing KC going with KSU DE in rnd 1.

Apr 19, 2023 01:29 PM #5

@AsadZ KSU de FAU. šŸ˜‚ great abbreviation given the end of bball season.

Apr 19, 2023 07:08 PM #6

Zay Flowers (wr) is in Texas working out with Mahomes for a pre-draft evaluation. He would be a fine addition, but it’s unlikely he’s available at pick 31. Smoke screen or real eval?

Apr 26, 2023 09:20 PM #7

Most analysts are predicting Panthers to select Bryce Young, however, Texans pick is a mystery. Logic says they should draft CJ Stroud but some folks think they may select on D.

I have also seen some reports suggesting Chiefs trading up in 21-22 range.

Let's see how things shake out tomorrow in KC.

Apr 26, 2023 10:03 PM #8

Yup, it's smoke screen season for NFL GMs. all sorts of crazy rumors out there.

Even one that the Chiefs move up for a running back. that would be odd.

Looks some mock predictors know what they're doing

Apr 28, 2023 09:34 PM #10

How do folks see day 1.

I thought Texans were ultra-aggressive and made solid moves, any Texans fans here?

How about Eagles selecting two Defensive studs from Georgia, their D will be legit.

I was surprised to see UK QB did not get drafted in round 1, several analysts were predicting him to in top 5.

Another surprise was Jets not selecting OL to protect Rogers.

Finally, not draft, but Lamar saga came to an end, he got paid nicely.

Apr 28, 2023 11:20 PM #11

@AsadZ good summary!

I thought the Chargers going after another tall WR was funny.

Apr 29, 2023 01:12 PM #12

Most analysts are not giving good grades on Chiefs round 2 and 3 selections. Folks are saying that better WR options were available than Rashee.

I think Veatch took into consideration Mahomes input who had worked out with him in TX recently.

To be fair, no one knows how this draft class will pan out.

It will be interesting to read these comments again in Nov and Dec.

Apr 29, 2023 01:39 PM #13

@AsadZ Draft gurus all fell in love with the Tennessee receivers - Hyatt and Cedric Tillman, so they are going to blast the chiefs pick. They also rated the beast from OSU Dawand and Marylands tackle higher.

Rice I don’t know much about. He led fbs in receiving yards @112 per game. Supposed to be good at high pointing the ball (41ā€ vert was best at combine for receivers).

Dawand Jones is an Orlando brown type player and Veach has already tried that experiment. Huge, but slow. The tackle he selected (Wayna) has quick feet, but needs to work on both his footwork and hands and could anchor better. He’s played both LT and RT so good for a swing tackle if he doesn’t win the RT job outright.

I am cautiously optimistic.

Apr 29, 2023 04:26 PM #14

Kinda laughing at the Eagles drafting every Georgia player they can. Haven’t seen that strategy work before with ā€˜Bama players, will it work with Bulldogs?

Apr 29, 2023 06:32 PM #15

Hoping Lonnie goes soon

Apr 29, 2023 06:35 PM #16

Veatch trading up and taking VA Tech DB in rnd 4, seems to be mainly for special teams, at least in year 1.

Apr 29, 2023 06:40 PM #17

@AsadZ That one has me scratching my head. Time will tell.

Apr 29, 2023 06:42 PM #18

Veach has had two straight really good draft before this one. Before those it was mixed at best. Lots of guess work in this line of work. I do like the athletic profile for the DB.

Apr 29, 2023 06:44 PM #19

Veatch liked his versatility, played multiple position - safety, nickel, outside.

Apr 29, 2023 06:46 PM #20

@AsadZ said in NFL Draft - 2023:

Definitely a Spags DB. Versatile like you said, big hands, good length, great jumper. Fast enough.

Apr 29, 2023 06:49 PM #21

Chiefs need to select a running back and I think one more OL for depth.

Apr 29, 2023 06:52 PM #22

I do think Veach gets cute with his picks at times. This year feels like that. But it’s hard to do. As long as you have Mahomes you’ll be competitive.

Apr 29, 2023 07:25 PM #23

@Kcmatt7 I’ve seen Mahomes break the laws of physics and levitate horizontally while tossing the pigskin in the Super Bowl. If that happened in Madden I would’ve been pissed at the game engine for cheating. šŸ˜‚

Yes and the Chiefs have already won two which is incredible. The Packers really laid out the blueprint for how to waste a franchise QB with Rodgers. Absolutely insane.

Apr 29, 2023 09:20 PM #25

Any word on what the Chiefs got from the cowboys for 6th round pick 1?

Apr 29, 2023 09:27 PM #26

@dylans 5th round pick in 2024 draft

May 04, 2023 12:05 PM #27

Chiefs have resigned RB McKinnon.

They have also signed former Bucs LT Donovan Smith, veteran LT. It seems that Chiefs are trying to add depth and competition in OL.

May 05, 2023 05:34 AM #28

Love love love that they locked up McKinnon.

And a new left tackle! Crazyily unexpected.

May 14, 2023 06:03 PM #29

How do folks see Chiefs season panning out?

I am thinking they go 13-4 with 14-3 a real possibility.

May 14, 2023 08:10 PM #30

@AsadZ UNDEFEATED!

Well, sure, I know...but why the hell not? I mean, just think how much fun it would be to shut up both the 1972 and 2023 Dolphins in one fell swoop?

May 14, 2023 08:54 PM #31

@AsadZ I would say Chiefs win at least 11 with a healthy Pat. A great shot at starting 8-0.

They probably win 13 games, but it’s still a tough schedule. Jets, Bills, Cincy, Chargers x2, Eagles and Dolphins are all going to be tough games.

May 14, 2023 09:08 PM #32

14-3. Patrick has never won less than 12 games.

6 50/50 games I’m guessing they win half of them.

May 15, 2023 05:17 AM #33

Ha, I had 17-0!

May 15, 2023 11:59 AM #34

Unlike last year Chiefs schedule is back end loaded this year.

May 31, 2023 04:29 PM #35

What do fans think about Hopkins?

He has been linked to Chiefs for some time.

Should Chiefs sign him?

May 31, 2023 05:48 PM #36

I’d love to have Hopkins.

They say he’s not a great route runner, but who cares! He produces. May be a good match for Mahomes’ escapability ability when the pockets breaks down.

May 31, 2023 05:49 PM #37

But, the potential drawback is what will it cost, and who we’d have to ditch.

May 31, 2023 09:29 PM #38

@rockchalkjayhawk Yes, what is the cost and will it hinder progress of young WRs.

Jun 01, 2023 03:34 AM #39

I’m guessing he’ll want obj money (15mil per year) or better. Would be hard to pull that off. A restructure of Mahomes contract is always possible - but not a good idea at this point. Chris Jones getting an extension could free up cap space too. The chiefs currently have 1.1mil with Rice left to sign - $700-850k in space effectively.

I’m thinking Frank Clark could very well end up back on the team.

Jun 01, 2023 11:49 AM #40

Clark signed with Saints.

Jun 01, 2023 11:57 AM #41

@AsadZ Do you know something no one else knows?

Jun 01, 2023 12:09 PM #42

@AsadZ I knew they were interested, has a deal been finalized?

Jun 01, 2023 02:18 PM #43

Bleacher Report indicated the Saints should sign Clark. Seattle and KC rumors too. I don’t see anything about having signed with any team.

I'm out on Hopkins. You don't give 30-year old WRs expensive and long contracts. We just won the Superbowl with a pretty mediocre set of WRs. Roll with what you've got.

Yea, but this crew is even more mediocre than last year’s group. I’m with ya on the money aspect though.

Jun 01, 2023 06:16 PM #46

@rockchalkjayhawk I think Toney goes for 1200 yards this year if (admittedly a big if) he can stay healthy. If Toney is out for an extended period of time they could have some issues.

Jun 01, 2023 09:24 PM #47

@mayjay https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2023/6/1/23744104/arrowheadlines-signing-julio-jones-would-make-sense-for-the-chiefs ↗

I had read in this story, perhaps it is not accurate.

Jun 01, 2023 09:28 PM #48

@AsadZ You missed the headline, apparently, so it looked like statement rather than the author's idea of what NO should do. Happens a lot, partly because layout editing is soooo poor nowadays!

"7 Post-June 1 Moves That NFL Teams Should Make Before Training Camp"

Julio is done. You’re better off giving those reps to the young guys.

That'd be awesome if Toney could have that kind of production. he's a bit of a mystery, so fingers crossed.

Jun 12, 2023 12:16 AM #51

A bit late but Clarke going to Broncos.

Jun 13, 2023 04:20 PM #52

Indifferent about Clarke moving on. He had his moments.

Jun 13, 2023 04:56 PM #53

Clark was only good in the playoffs, but when you’re there every year that’s kinda important. Hope they can replace his post season production with in house talent. That guy from San Fran is intriguing

Meh, the SF guy isn’t really intriguing to me. I watched most of his games for the last two years. He’s been ā€œon the vergeā€ of a breakout season for like half a decade now. He’s a body. Seems durable. Throw in the domestic violence stuff and double meh.

Jun 13, 2023 06:54 PM #55

@rockchalkjayhawk Not up to speed on his off the field baggage. Great just got rid of Clark and replaced him with a less productive version of the same guy.

Jun 13, 2023 08:10 PM #56

@dylans Some experts who obviously know more than me give the Chiefs good grades for signing him.

Tyler Sullivan at CBS Sports gave the deal an A- grade and wrote, ā€œOmenihu has a ton of upside and should thrive in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. Playing next to Chris Jones will benefit him immensely.ā€ Our pal Matt Verderame from Sports Illustrated gave the Chiefs a B but docked them solely for his off-the-field concerns. Meanwhile, Seth Walder from ESPN concurs with the B rating and calls Omenihu a ā€œfineā€ signing given the weak free agent selection.

Jun 14, 2023 01:59 AM #57

Cullen is a very good D-line coach. He’ll get the most out of the group. We shall see.

Jun 14, 2023 12:15 PM #58

He was playing in SF behind elite DEs. At KC he will get more opportunities to showcase.

Jun 14, 2023 04:38 PM #59

True. I’m hoping for his breakout season! Or at least a solid rotational guy.

Jul 30, 2023 07:01 PM #60

What do fans think about Chris Jones holdout. Per media reports he is demanding $30M/year and Chiefs are not close to this figure.

In the meantime, he is being fined $50M/day for missing camp practices.

Jul 30, 2023 07:12 PM #61

I think Chris Jones is 29. Likely his best football will be behind him in 2 years. He’s under contract this season and then he has two years of Franchise Tag in his future.

Not sure he has a lot of leverage. Not sure the Chiefs benefit from giving him a deal. So to me the Chiefs can play hardball and should.

I think he plays this year under his current deal and then he gets a new deal after the season. Either with the Chiefs or through a tag and trade.

Jul 30, 2023 10:09 PM #62

@Kcmatt7 Chris Jones franchise tag number for 2024 is 120% of his cap hit this year less a handful of incentives, since that is more than the average of the 5 highest paid at the position. I believe it would be 32-34 million. He’s within his right to ask for 30 million. The Chiefs need to be fiscally responsible, it’s a tough call. If they can get the right picks for him, he might have to go. Not this season though, it’s too late after the draft. Not being able to get a capable replacement would waste a year of Mahomes prime.

Jul 31, 2023 04:21 PM #63

Holdouts and contract demands in the NFL have never made sense to me.

And why do NFL teams give in if a guy is under contract?

Shut up and play.

Jul 31, 2023 04:27 PM #64

I’m never going to fault a guy for trying to maximize his short earning potential in the NFL. As a fan I wish Jones had held out earlier so there were more options though.

Aug 23, 2023 08:28 PM #65

Some intriguing roster batteles:

Back up QB: Buechele vs Gabbert: I'd love to see Buechele get it but Reid will most likely with Gabbert for his experience.

TE #3: Bushman vs Bell: I think Bushman will edge out Bell.

DBs: Several young DBs on the roster and some may be picked up by other teams and not make practice squd. I'd like Nic Jones to make 53-man roster.

WRs: Will Chiefs carry 7 WRs. What about J Ross. He is very talented but has he shown enough to make the roster?

DL/DE: This is the most concerning position. Will Veatch bring back Dunlap for some depth? If Jones does not show up, look for one or two signings.

Aug 23, 2023 11:11 PM #66

Agree on QB Buechele, reminds me of QB 1! Hoping BellDozer makes it. I think Ross does too. Jones šŸ™

Aug 24, 2023 04:58 PM #67

Justyn Ross has been a training camp favorite and has had some nice plays in the preseason. Smith Marsette is interesting. I believe 7 WRs will happen.

I think Perine makes the roster over Prince now too.

Aug 27, 2023 06:09 PM #68

2 INTs may cost Buechele back up job although Chiefs were playing 2nd string OL but Browns had 1st string D in Q1.

I'd love to see I Marsette get a spot but unless Chiefs carry 8 WRs he may be cut.

Hope Veatch is working on some potential trades to bolster DL.

Aug 28, 2023 01:00 PM #69

Rumors of Chiefs and Carson Wentz. I'd be pretty happy with that.

Aug 28, 2023 03:46 PM #70

As long as he never plays. Wentz has the tools, but lacks the leadership skills - he’s a bit soft between the ears.

Aug 28, 2023 04:54 PM #71

Yea, The backup QBs look a bit shaky so far. I’d be happy with Wentz.

Aug 28, 2023 08:27 PM #72

@dylans Or he can get plenty of time in Q4 when Chiefs are ahead by a few TDS.

Oct 21, 2023 12:49 PM #73

Coburn, 6th round selection from TX, was waived but picked up by Broncos. Chiefs gambled on that he will clear waivers.

It is disappointing as Chiefs lost on a young player they were hoping to develop.

Oct 21, 2023 01:48 PM #74

@AsadZ It is disappointing, but they must not have seen much from him to waive him over Herring or Dickson.

Nov 13, 2023 01:09 AM #75

Stroud is thriving with Texans, they can make playoffs.

On the other hand, Bryce Young is struggling with Panthers, they haven’t put him in a good situation.

It’s interesting to see how a team’s culture and system impacts development and performance of young talented QBs.

Nov 14, 2023 04:12 PM #76

Big win for Broncos on the road over Bills.

Broncos have young talented players on both sides and Wilson is playing much better.

They are buying into Payton's system.

Dec 31, 2023 09:42 PM #77

WE’RE #1! WE’RE #1!*

*in the draft. Again.

Jan 01, 2024 01:57 PM #78

This honor goes to Panthers.

Jan 01, 2024 05:12 PM #79

Oops

I stand corrected.

I think they should keep Fields and not go for QB.
