Swiss knife gate has got me thinking for a thread that might be helpful to us. We are planning to go to Switzerland next summer. We have no clue how to get there, what to do when we get there, where to stay when we get there, how to get around when we get there. Where did you fly into? Do we hire a guide to get us up into the Alps? I want to see the Matterhorn. What's the best time to be there? Do I have to wear Liederhosen? :) I'm an open water swimmer and would love to knock off a lake or two in the area. Should I learn to yodel? Airbnb or hotel? Great train rides/excursions?

Obviously I can figure some stuff out on my own to answer these questions, but am really curious about experiences you've had if you've been there. I appreciate it.

@wissox I can help you with this - try the Swiss cheese. It's holy. Also, Swiss Miss hot chocolate is quite lovely. And ....oh yeah.....they have great army knives.

@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah, that's a possibility.

@wissox son in Lawrence, his family travels a lot and they use a gal there. I have no idea how much it cost. They really like her.

@wissox Just out of curiosity, why Switzerland? Do you have ancestors from there? Did you have an old girlfriend from there? Did you win a trip on The Price is Right?

@nuleafjhawk I am retiring next June. I've never travelled anywhere except here in the states and have always wanted to see the Alps. I want to see if they're as spectacular as Mt. Sunflower, the highest point in Kansas, or even as spectacular as Mt. Oread (doubtful).

@wissox Yeah, don't get your hopes up about that.

A friend of mine went on a soul-searching journey to Iceland a few years ago. On about day 3 she called me and was just SOBBING. I immediately panicked. I thought she'd been assaulted, robbed, injured - all those things that run through your mind.

It turns out that she was overwhelmed by the natural beauty that she saw everywhere. Waterfalls. Rivers. Cliffs. Lush greenery. The ocean. She said it was incredibly beautiful!

I've wanted to go since then, but the timing (and the money) hasn't worked out yet.

@nuleafjhawk Yeah, I've heard Iceland is nice. But I want summer warmth on my trip and the Alps promises some of that! Plus there's less risk in being blown up by a volcano.

@wissox Actually just going to check on your unnumbered bank account, aren't you? Or putting gold and fake passports in your private vault?

We know you are really a spy from SMERSH.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Switzerland for work over the years. A Swiss person would reject the following characterization (emphatically, but politely). But one of the great things about Switzerland is that it can be like visiting 3 countries in one, but all with Swiss efficiency (and, alas, prices) — in the west, Geneva and environs are more than a bit French, in the southern Alps, a hint of Italy, and the north/east, Germanic. I hope you have a great trip!

@HoraceZontal he should have you be his guide!

@Crimsonorblue22 That would be fun, but he’d get bored with my old man’s tour of Geneva, the part I know the best: “Here’s my favorite restaurant Chez Jacky. Oh wait, it’s closed now. That’s too bad. It was really good.”
