SELF AND TURGEON NAMED SEMI-FINALIST FOR NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR.
Mar 05, 2015 01:23 AM #1

My final four would be Self, Bennett, Jacobson and Turgeon.

Good for Mark, he has had some struggles. Still I vote for Self.

And I will make another statement. When ever Self leaves I would take Danny Manning over Turgeon 10 out of 10 times.

Mar 05, 2015 03:02 AM #3

@JayhawkRock78 Why?

Mar 05, 2015 03:06 AM #4

@wissoxfan83 Simple. For the big man expertise.

Mar 05, 2015 03:09 AM #5

@brooksmd
But don't you think he needs to prove himself some more? I'd love to see Danny coach KU. He's my favorite Jayhawk, but I would just need to know he can coach a team with extraordinarily high expectations from it's fan base. Turgeon gets the same scrutiny too and he's done decently I've thought.

@wissoxfan83

"Turgeon gets the same scrutiny too and he's done decently I've thought."

That's exactly why. Turgeon is definitely a solid coach. But for KU, Manning has the potential to be amazing. I would take Turgeon but I would be ready to let the dice roll with Manning.

Mar 05, 2015 04:41 AM #7

As much as I respect Danny, the clear choice is Turgeon, if the hire were to happen this offseason.

Mar 05, 2015 04:46 AM #8

@Blown do you think that would change due to head coach experience?

Mar 05, 2015 12:20 PM #9

You would have to think Bennett and Jacobsen are the front runners for COY. Virginia still winning without their best player. Nobody would have thought UNI would be any good much less ranked all year.

Self will always be undervalued in these awards because the fact that he wins every year has become a given. No matter if he takes a new starting 5, 1 starter here, 2 starters there it doesn't matter.

Mar 05, 2015 01:04 PM #10

@Crimsonorblue22 Turgeon has too many years on Danny of in-game coaching. Danny is superior at specializing in big men, but I don't see him becoming as well-rounded of a coach that Turgeon has become in almost 30 years of coaching and recruiting.

Mar 05, 2015 02:26 PM #11

Let me elaborate. My thought process is thinking years in the future, not a next year scenario.

Turgeon did a good job at a mid major-WSU getting.one championship followed by a big let down. He did okay at A&M and is finally making noise at Maryland this year. I agree he has a lot more ncaa head coaching experience.

For one thing Danny delivered a KU National Championship. He followed that with many years in the NBA on bad knees. He has coached at KU many years of championships including a National Title, albeit in an asst. role. I have to think he has learned a ton from Self working with him for years.

Mostly it's my gut-and the demeanor I see on the bench. I think this 6'10" guy with his record trumps a 5'10" guy in this game-even on the sideline. JMHO.
And my guess is there are plenty here who would want Turgeon instead.

Mar 05, 2015 03:25 PM #12

Self should win NCOY just for having to take the media assault all year that "this is the year Kansas won't repeat..."

"Could it be?"

"Texas has all the horse!."

"Iowa State is as gifted of a team as you will find on the planet!"

Self has had to endure all the bull snit, he should now get to eat the steak!

Mar 05, 2015 04:32 PM #13

@drgnslayr

Bevohouse steak w/ mayordaise sauce.

Mar 05, 2015 07:27 PM #14

@drgnslayr

Totally agree, we survived the gauntlet and came out victorious again. Self should at least win Big 12 coach of the year. I mean no other school in the conference can replace the Top pick & #3 pick in the NBA draft and do what he's done.

Wiggins to Oubre wasn't a big drop off at all, you can even argue that Oubre has fit into this team so well that you don't even know he was a freshman. But to replace Embiid with nothing, not a single Center, just a collective assortment of bigs is astonishing.

But this is KU where winning is the culture.

For that the media darlings will probably hand the award to Bennett. I don't blame them for it UV has 1 loss and a collection of players who bought into his system. No stars, no thrills, just plain good basketball. Seasons like that don't come around often and especially with a team that wasn't expected to be as good as they were.

Must you ask why? Because Coach Self is "our" coach and as KU fans...this is how we roll....

Mar 05, 2015 10:59 PM #16

@JayHawkFanToo I wasn't asking why the vote for Self, I was questioning him why he'd take Manning 10 out of 10 times.

Mar 05, 2015 11:07 PM #17

@wissoxfan83
Yeah, I went a bit over the top on that. I guess I just like Danny a lot better. How about I back off and say, Danny #1. Turgeon 2?

Mar 05, 2015 11:08 PM #18

@JayhawkRock78 Works for me, I wasn't trying to be difficult, just wondering why you so overwhelmingly favored Danny.

Mar 05, 2015 11:10 PM #19

@wissoxfan83
I guess I was having a bromance moment. ugh.

Mar 05, 2015 11:10 PM #20

@wissoxfan83

The thread is about Turgeon and Self being COTY candidates...logical assumption, wouldn't you think.

As far as Turgeon and Manning, I don't believe either one is ready to take over KU. although, if they were the only two choices, I would have to go with Turgeon based on his experience and record. Manning still has to prove he can coach a top program; his time at WF has been rocky, to say the least and I would not consider Tulsa a big program but more of a steppingstone.

Mar 05, 2015 11:11 PM #21

@JayhawkRock78 Oh I understand. Ever since Danny made me a very happy 1988 graduate I've had a bromance with him too!

Mar 05, 2015 11:13 PM #22

@JayHawkFanToo

No, I'm not logical. Read what @JayhawkRock78 wrote on his post last, that's what I responded to.

Mar 05, 2015 11:14 PM #23

@wissoxfan83 you guys!👬❤️💙

Mar 05, 2015 11:14 PM #24

I would take Tony Bennet as the next coach.

Mar 05, 2015 11:22 PM #25

@wrwlumpy Way to go Turge! Bill Self should absolutely hands down win it this year. Im certain if he wins at least a couple games in the madness he will get it.
Jay Wright is an idiot, he doesnt deserve $%#!! Neither does Calipari.

Mar 05, 2015 11:24 PM #26

@wrwlumpy Do you think the KU faithful would be ready for a coach that is perfectly willing to win games by the score of 48-43? I think he's an excellent coach with a nice coaching pedigree. I'm just not sure KU would want that style of play to come to Lawrence.

Mar 05, 2015 11:25 PM #27

@JayhawkRock78 For real! Wasnt Turgeon and Manning on that same team? I forget. Anyways, given that Coach Self will probly retire at KU, when the vacancy happens, it'll be many years of experience for Danny, who will be in his prime by then I assume. Manning is also a much bigger draw for 5 star recruits, guard or big. I dont know this for fact, its just opining.

Mar 05, 2015 11:27 PM #28

@drgnslayr Thats what Im sayin! Him AND his team have had to endure the doubting and naysaying and flat out disregard for the whole season. They proved everyone wrong. The kicker is, I think, they need to make some noise in the madness before he could get COY.

Mar 05, 2015 11:33 PM #29

@Lulufulu

Turgeon was at KU from '83 to '87, Manning from '84 to '88.

Turgeon is 50 and in his 17th year as HC in College basketball,

Manning is 48 and in his 3rd year as HC in College basketball,

Not even close in HC experience.

Mar 06, 2015 12:15 AM #30

@JayHawkFanToo

Sounds good, until you consider a guy named Kevin Ollie. Second year in he took home the gold. And he only had 2 years as an assistant coach before that.

I think we get too focused on stats. I don't know which guy I would prefer. I'd base it on investigating further and interviews... lots of interviews... with both coaches, old staff members and faculty members... and also players.

I think both of these guys are qualified and capable.

Gosh... just looked over the list and Scott Drew is on it! Seriously?

Mar 06, 2015 12:21 AM #31

@JayHawkFanToo Thats why I said Manning will be in his prime and ready to take over KU when Coach Self decides to hang em up.

Mar 06, 2015 05:07 AM #32

@Lulufulu

So far Manning season (13-17 overall and 5-12 conference) is nothing to write home about; Turgeon, on the other hand, is having perhaps his best season as a Head Coach. I love Manning as much as any Jayhawk fan and I thought he did a great job as an assistant; however, his capability of leading a big time program is yet to be determined.

Mar 06, 2015 04:45 PM #33

@drgnslayr

Kevin Ollie hit the jackpot and the perfect storm all in one last year. How is that working out for him this year? Tied for 5th in a weak American Conference and ranked 59th as per Ken Pomeroy. Keep in mind that the year UConn won the title, it finished third in conference with a 12-6 record, he was also playing with Calhoun's recruits....can you say Weber? When he shows that he can have his team consistently in the top 20 then I will consider him a better than average coach, until then he is/was just a flash in the pan.

Mar 06, 2015 05:55 PM #34

@JayHawkFanToo

I agree that Ollie has to still prove himself. I'm not one of those National Championship idolizers that put everything on those as the determinant of what makes a great coach.

But he definitely hit the jackpot.

Curious if he can recruit... or as you say... is he just another Weber!

Mar 06, 2015 05:59 PM #35

@drgnslayr

I think you just hit on a new insult. Call someone a Weber.

Mar 06, 2015 06:02 PM #36

@wissoxfan83 that's a great one!
