Will be Missouri's next men's bball headcoach barring any craziness.

Mar 15, 2017 08:46 PM #2

I hate to see a good man ruined. I have memories of watching him on the State Farm Illinois state championships back in the day. He and Laphonso Ellis were quite the duo for that 3 peating state champion.

Mar 15, 2017 08:49 PM #3

@wissox

Excellent memory.

Mar 15, 2017 08:52 PM #4

He is a pretty mediocre coach so he will fit right in at Missouri.

Mar 15, 2017 09:05 PM #5

@BShark

Yep. He officially told Cal he was leaving for another school and that he wanted to get closer to home.

IMHO he is way overrated. His record at all 3 schools is just about the same and hovering around 0.600. He translated his one good year at Tennessee into a potentially better job at Cal where his team just got bumped out in the first round of the NIT by CSU Bakersfield ..really?

His overall record is marginally better than Haith and mostly because he did better in conference play although he does not have the baggage Haith had. Like I said, MU would get an up and coming mid major or lower major coach at around $2M and this is exactly what it got. definitely not a HR hire or even a triple or double, perhaps a bloop single with potential for a double is a better description...I am sure MU will scream is an HR though.

Mar 15, 2017 09:06 PM #6

@wissox Do you also remember Cuonzo Martin shooting KU out of the 1994 NCAA tournament with a still standing Purdue record of 8 made 3's in a game?

Mar 15, 2017 09:08 PM #7

Cuonzo Martin is a lateral job hopper. Tennessee, Cal, and Missouri are all comparable programs and he's voluntarily left for two of them. He'll be gone from Missouri pretty soon as well.

Mar 15, 2017 09:36 PM #8

@Texas-Hawk-10 I remember Glenn Robinson in that game. Cuonzo made 8 3's that game? I'm surprised I don't remember that. Those two must have done all of their scoring.

Mar 15, 2017 09:37 PM #9

@Texas-Hawk-10

The 3 year itch?

Apparently he got a 7 year $21M contract...he must have one hell of an agent since it is a considerable increase from Cal and he is leaving Cal in poor shape, bumped in the first round of the NIT, 3 of the top 4 scores and 6 seniors leaving and Rabb headed for the NBA...as bad a rebuild job as MU...

Cuonzo and Big Dog Robinson scored 73 of Purdues 83 points that night! I think Roy didn't game plan for defense very well that game, but of course he rarely had the need to game plan for defense!

Mar 15, 2017 09:46 PM #11

@wissox

I remember that game vividly as I watched at a bar at the Airport in Los Angeles, waiting to catch my flight home...should have caught an earlier flight.

Mar 15, 2017 09:59 PM #12

@Texas-Hawk-10

Racial issues at Tennessee allegedly.

Agree with you. Good recruiter not a great coach.

Mar 16, 2017 01:14 AM #13

@JayHawkFanToo Cal was never going to pay big money for a basketball coach. A lot of their potential salary is tied up paying football coaches who no longer coach at Cal. College sports and especially basketball are not that big in the bay area. The only exception is Stanford women. There are a lot of other ways for people to spend their time. The area much prefers pro sports.

@wissox What ever Happened to Glen Robinson anyways? - -I had totally forgotten all about him. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Mar 16, 2017 01:53 AM #15

@jayballer54 He was the 1st pick of the draft after destroying us in the dance. Played well in the NBA and now his son is doing the same. Came out of Gary Indiana if I recall correctly which I saw up close last summer. Gary, Indiana is a great song, but it's just about the saddest city I've seen in quite some time. Street after street of abandoned burned buildings, the city has no money to even tear them down. Really really sad. Sports was his escape because who knows where he'd be if it weren't for sports.

Mar 16, 2017 02:20 AM #16

@wissox Hey well thanks for the info. - -I sure remember seemed like we had no answer for him, but I still had forgot all about him. That's really sad about the city. - -Got one more question wasn't his nick name BIG Dog - -or am I mistaking and thinking of someone else. - - Thanks again - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Mar 16, 2017 02:31 AM #17

@jayballer54 Yep he was the Big Dog. I read a little more. He averaged 30 points a game his junior year. Imagine that. But in the defeat of KU he tweaked his back and scored only 13 against Duke in the regional final and they lost. That was a very good top seeded Purdue team.

Mar 16, 2017 02:31 AM #18

@BShark So, he's leaving the racial problems at Tennessee to come to Missouri? They should show him videos of the Antlers and have him watch the Spike Lee Documentary of the crowds shouting the N word and the Swastika's painted on certain house's and dorms. Show him the videos of the football team refusing to play a home game until the school Chancellor was fired. Show him the State Legislature introducing a bill to take away scholarships if a player refuses play unless he is injured. Show him the video of the Offensive lineman choosing Illinois instead of Mizzou because his parents feared for his safety.

Well just read of 247 sports, had a big write up. - Says Porter clan headed back to Missouri. - - Article stated that the porters rumor had it they had been talking about returning all season. - -The rumor was Romar would be the next Coach at Missouri, well that didn't turn out as we know, but that Martin had been in contact or Missouri had been in Contact with Porter Senior over the weekend and want him back as an assistant. Porter Senior has two daughters on the Missouri Women's basketball team. How Convienent. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@BShark Welcome to hell, Cuonzo. Meth U awaits...

Mar 16, 2017 03:47 AM #21

@wrwlumpy

Yeah, doesn't seem to smart. Nor does Missouri giving him 5 years guaranteed lol.

Mar 16, 2017 03:53 AM #22

@BShark I dunno if it was too dumb. 5 years probably would be important to potential recruits seeing how much turnover they have had.

Mar 16, 2017 04:01 AM #23

@mayjay

He has stayed exactly 3 years at each of his 3 previous HC gigs...a trend?

Mar 16, 2017 04:06 AM #24

@JayHawkFanToo Recruits are easily fooled. Look at Baylor. Talent, no coaching.

Mar 16, 2017 04:10 PM #25

Porters are locked up to Missouri already, but also look for them to possibly add Tilmon and Mark Smith as well. Martin is killing it right now.

Mar 17, 2017 11:28 AM #26

The minute I read Harry Edwards was lecturing at Lawrence some months back I just had a feeling Martin was gone and Harry was looking.

Zo is short timing schools. He gets the game. They hire him to meet their African American requirement through hoops, and that leaves them free to hire white football coaches. He gives a respectable season, is the broom that sweeps out the skeletons, gets billed as a turn around guy that solves "the racial" and the skeletons, and boom! Next program for more bones.

He's another solid coach. He could probably get above .600, if he stayed put, but there's too much money in solving "the racial" and sweeping skeletons right now.

Good for Zo.

It's a business and a profession, not a charity. MU is just another stop.

Smart.

Mar 17, 2017 02:22 PM #27

@wrwlumpy

It's possible that the racial tension at Mizzou has forced their hand in hiring a minority coach to try and get things back on track. That's got to at least be a partial consideration with the issues that have come up the last few years (and the things that have happened prior to that that we know about).

Mar 17, 2017 10:23 PM #28

@wissox Gary is, hands down, one of the 10 worst cities in America . Almost as bad as Flint Mi.

Mar 17, 2017 10:24 PM #29

@globaljaybird

Gary Indiana right? If so, total dump, I've been through a few times for travel.
