Starting Pitching

I think this is what defines our season. Did Dayton do enough with our rotation to make the playoffs? And to be frank, it really comes down to how durable Vargas is and how effective Karns can be. Rolling out a guy who gives up 5 runs in 5 innings every 5th day isn't going to cut it. Karns has to be a guy. Because Wood is going to end up in the rotation at some point this year. We aren't getting 180 innings out of all 5 of those guys. And Karn's Spring Training has been awful. Right in line with his ERA his entire career. I do think he has a future in the bullpen if he can't hack it in the rotation. But he has to be a solid reliable guy this year.

  • Duffy 2-3 ERA
  • Kennedy 3-4 ERA
  • Hammel 3-4 ERA
  • Vargas 3.5-4.5 ERA
  • Karns 6-7 ERA

With our current roster, I think we will score some runs and still play well above average defense while we are at it. We have GG level fielders at 6 positions still. So, it really comes down to this. Can Duffy repeat his efforts last year, can Kennedy or Hammel be around a 2.8 ERA as well, and most importantly, can Karns not suck? If those things happen, we give ourselves a chance to win every single day. And I don't see how we don't make the playoffs. But, if two of those things don't happen, it could make for some tough decisions in July.

@Kcmatt7 The new ace of the staff Duffy, really needs to cut the buck. Prove 2016 was not a fluke but the real McCoy. Kennedy should eat up innings, but a .500 W/L record is as good as I expect from him. New league/team for Hammel-he could very well be below 3.00 And Vargas could be at 3.5 too. I don't think Vargy will have a lot of endurance after his injury, but a curveball pitcher may do better than a hard thrower in recovery. Karns is not a guy that we should expect much out of & will likely be in line with his ho-hum career stats. I know i'm gonna miss hell outta Dyson & really thought we got the Uecker hose job on that trade. Dyson won us a lot of game wit dat speed & defense in the years he flourished here. I just don't think we got enough in return. Maybe Wood or Straam can give us a big lift in that rotation, but this entire freaking rotation is a question mark if ya ask me. And needless to say our pen may only be a shadow of the past 3 years glory ride. Still they're our team & we gotta back em win or lose. Rock Chalk Royals-is abt time for dat first pitch Matt-I'm pumped to get outta da box in a flash !

Projected depth chart for 2017 Royals as of today with what, 6 days to start of season in Minnesota.

Supposedly if Karns can't produce Wood would get the 5th spot.

Mar 29, 2017 03:17 AM #4

@brooksmd Cain already out. Dyson would be nice there!

Mar 29, 2017 03:34 AM #5

I don't feel great about this Royals team but they are tough and will probably win more games than they should.

Mar 29, 2017 03:36 AM #6

@Crimsonorblue22 Read somewhere that Soler may start the season on the DL also.

Mar 29, 2017 03:43 AM #7

@Crimsonorblue22 Cain looks like day-to-day due to tightness in his side pending further exam. Do you have more in-depth info?

Mar 29, 2017 05:01 AM #8

@brooksmd no

Mar 29, 2017 11:52 AM #9

Kris Medlin was cut by Atlanta so we could get him again.

More dingers & also Soler will likely miss the opener with injury. Not serious but missing a day of work is serious to the guy that pays you. This was his pattern in Chicago & may be on the DL here before he gets a real at bat. Sheesh...

Mar 29, 2017 06:35 PM #11

@globaljaybird Wade is hurt in Chicago right now too. So either way we would be in the exact same spot on opening day... If that makes anyone feel better.

edit: He is still playing but he is getting hit harder than Rocky boxing Apollo Creed. Most people think it is injury.

Apr 01, 2017 12:49 AM #12

@globaljaybird Kennedy throwing BP for the Rangers in the 2nd gives up several hits and 3 runs. Tex 3 - 0 after 2.

Apr 01, 2017 12:52 AM #13

@globaljaybird Saw the replays of the hr's. The one by Moss was a monster. Royals have 2nd most dingers in ST. With their pitching staff they will need the long ball. Not expecting much from Soler.

Apr 01, 2017 01:09 AM #14

Kinda like the Royals blue shirts they're wearing tonite. White piping around the neck and down the middle front with a large KC on the left. And piping around the bottom of the sleeves.

Apr 01, 2017 01:17 AM #15

@brooksmd won't be long before I can watch!

Apr 01, 2017 01:22 AM #16

Wonder who will be the DH? He'll be hard pressed to make us forget Morales and his 24 doubles, 30 hr's (led the team) and 93 rbi's (2nd behind Hos) last year.

Apr 01, 2017 01:25 AM #17

Hos just got big air to get a line drive. Moose and that bazooka arm of his looking good back at 3rd.

Apr 01, 2017 01:42 AM #18

@brooksmd still 3-0? Figured Kennedy would be one of our better pitchers.

Apr 01, 2017 01:46 AM #19

@Crimsonorblue22 Maybe it's his Elite 8 game tonite. The HCBS blamers still at it over in basketball?

Apr 01, 2017 01:48 AM #20

@brooksmd franks awards hilighting comments now. He's cleaning up!

Apr 01, 2017 01:49 AM #21

@Crimsonorblue22 He's gonna need one hell of a trophy case.

Apr 01, 2017 02:10 AM #22

@brooksmd any of our pitchers looked good? Duff or Vargas?

Apr 01, 2017 02:10 AM #23

@brooksmd did Hoz get rid of his Mohawk?

Apr 01, 2017 02:13 AM #24

@Crimsonorblue22 After winning all the early POY awards it's darn near impossible for any of the remaining POY awards to go to anybody else. The Naismith and Wooden .... WOW, great play by Gore who is now in for Cain in cf. Long run towards lf ending in a diving catch.

Apr 01, 2017 02:25 AM #25

@Crimsonorblue22 Think so. Don't recall seeing him without a hat on. Just read where the gold unis from last year will be an alternate uni for this year. Still 3-0 in the 8th with Tabasco on the hill.

Also a request for funding by @approx. Go see my donation challenge!

Apr 01, 2017 02:30 AM #27

@brooksmd I've never seen gore in the field, never seen him hit! All these outfielders are so injury prone, should have kept dat speed! Burns any good?

Apr 01, 2017 02:33 AM #28

@Crimsonorblue22 Haven't seen that many games to give an opinion on the starters. Ned has used most of the BP tonite and most have looked good except for Strahm nailing a couple hitters with his breaking ball. Wood, Young, Minor, Strahm, Sorosis and Tabasco.

Apr 01, 2017 02:34 AM #29

@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah and he can cover some ground also. Ned had Moss in lf and Gordo in rf to start the game.

Apr 01, 2017 02:35 AM #30

@brooksmd you mean sorry i ass

Apr 01, 2017 02:39 AM #31

Self will be in hof!! Yeah!!!! Just announced!!!

Apr 01, 2017 02:42 AM #32

Final Rangers 3 - 0

Apr 01, 2017 02:43 AM #33

@Crimsonorblue22 No surprise. Although some on here would question it given his "choking" history in E8.
