Is Every Day the Day and Not the Day?
Jan 09, 2018 12:02 PM #1

Players play through.

Fans fan through.

Every day is the day, if it is not not the day.

It appears that a decision is coming at any minute.

@HighEliteMajor

I thought that by now we were in...any second now...territory. :smiley:

We heard yesterday afternoon. That's what we were told, right? If we don't hear by this morning, it will be sooner rather than later... Really, how soon is soon?
Noon?
Perhaps in a blue moon (end of this month!)?
Maybe by Saturday morning cartoons?

Jan 09, 2018 06:48 PM #5

@benshawks08 I just heard that it is any minute now.

Jan 09, 2018 06:54 PM #6

Where is that damned cat?

Jan 09, 2018 09:16 PM #7

@mayjay

In the hat, of course...

I don't understand why this is taking so long with De Sousa. Preston, sure. But De Sousa?

Jan 10, 2018 12:09 AM #9

@KirkIsMyHinrich

Really not hard to understand. As I understand, De Sousa’s classes ended the Thursday before Christmas so technically he did not officially graduate until after Christmas when the NCAA was closed so his records were not submitted until the first parts of this year and when you consider that some are from a different country, you can see why they would not be done in a few days. I believe that a resolution on Billy will come first.

Jan 10, 2018 12:13 AM #10

No actually I still don't understand why that would take this long for De Sousa.

Jan 10, 2018 12:55 AM #11

I mean, presumably the NCAA has received all necessary documentation at this point from the our end. They have clear requirements for meeting amateur status. They grant amateur status to thousands of student-athletes every year, including many international candidates, and I would assume they are well-versed with the protocol when considering foreign students. So either the documents received meet the NCAA's standard for amateur status or they don't. I guess I'm just not sure why it's taking so long to award De Sousa amateur status or otherwise. And I would guess that De Sousa plays before Preston.

Our man Bill and cohorts have infrequently appeared so powerless. I hope to heck none of them bash an AFH wash basin with a ball bat!

Jan 10, 2018 01:31 AM #13

The NCAA is really a Schroedinger box/experiment

Jan 10, 2018 01:43 AM #14

@KirkIsMyHinrich

So you think that the NCAA should drop every other application and move KU to the front of the line?

Evaluating foreign transcripts is not as easy as you would think. I personally attended schools 3 different countries and continents and all transcripts and grading criteria were quite different. Even within a country, the school structure can change from year to year. In one particular cases the school structure that included 6 grades of primary and 6 years of secondary school changed to 6 years of primary, 2 years of intermediate and 4 year of middle school and grading changed from 0-7 to 0-5...talk about confusing. Here, we are used to a school structure and grading criteria that has not changed in a long time, unfortunately the rest of the world marches to many different and constantly changing drummers. Add to that the fact that transcripts are in different languages and alphabets and reliable translation is not always available and the origin and authenticity of many documents cannot always be validated. In many cases consulates, both American and foreign, will need to be contacted to get clarification.

Perhaps the above will give you an idea of how complicated evaluating a foreign transcript can be and why it cannot be done overnight. If De Sousa would have come to KU as scheduled next fall, I am sure the paperwork would have been completed with time to spare.

@JayHawkFanToo No I don't think they should drop every other case and prioritize Kansas. However, I do think that they should arm themselves with the personnel to deal with the each case that they are presented with in a timely manner. And I can't say for sure, but I would guess that they have the money to make that happen. I don't doubt that international cases are trickier than domestic cases, but I still believe the De Sousa matter should have been resolved by now.

Jan 10, 2018 01:51 AM #16

@KirkIsMyHinrich

The De Sousa documentation has been handed to the NCAA last week, what makes you think that they are not acting in a timely manner?

Jan 10, 2018 01:52 AM #17

The fact that he hasn't been awarded amateur status yet.

Jan 10, 2018 02:00 AM #18

Looks like it will be soon with Silvio. They were waiting on some documents from the Angola National team which were just recently acquired/delivered.

Jan 10, 2018 02:01 AM #19

Welp. I suck.

Jan 10, 2018 02:07 AM #20

@BShark good to hear. Where is this info from? Thanks for sharing.

Jan 10, 2018 02:08 AM #21

Matt Scott.

Jan 10, 2018 02:09 AM #22

@KirkIsMyHinrich

I give up. SMH.

Jan 10, 2018 02:10 AM #23

Great. Good for you.

Jan 14, 2018 09:43 AM #24

"I believe that a resolution on Billy will come first."

Hmm... So am I allowed to "smh" now. Whatever.

Jan 14, 2018 03:11 PM #25

There was really never a doubt with Silvio, the NCAA just had to get their thumb out of their butt.

With Preston I really think there is something nefarious that happened and Self knows. Just a hunch.

Jan 14, 2018 09:39 PM #26

@BShark

Based on the bits and pieces that came out in the last few days, sounds like it goes deeper than we though. Not optimistic he will play at all this year which is too bad since he would have contributed the most.
