Hot Rumor
Mar 21, 2019 01:25 AM #1

Some rumor out there our old friend John Calipari has interest in the UCLA job. Color me skeptical but would be a good time.

Mar 21, 2019 01:27 AM #2

UCLA has a great history, but not like Kentucky. Nor does it have the same fan base. I think Kentucky is the better job.

The man is a showman with charisma, even if I don't like him. LA and Hollywood and Cal seem a perfect match.

I heard Hoiberg is going to Nubs but if ISU was open it would give him A LOT to think about.

Mar 22, 2019 04:20 AM #10

So weird his daughter went to KU.

Mar 22, 2019 12:47 PM #11

@FarmerJayhawk it was rumored to be done but that was obviously before all of this.

Coaching at your alma matar I’m sure can be a pain in the ass and comes with added pressure so will be interesting to see what happens here in the next couple of weeks.

Wonder if Bama would make another run at Marshall...

Hoiberg worked for one of the worst owners in sports Jerry Reinsdorf. He's a cheapskate, and owns one of the worst NBA franchises and one of the worst baseball franchises, a team of which I am more of a fan than even KU, the White Sox. He offered a ton of money to Machado, but still did it in a way that was cheap and lost him. I think Fred can coach and wish him well.

Straight cash, homie. That buyout is massive and Wake isn’t exactly a financial powerhouse. I think it’s the smallest P5 school by a pretty good margin.

Mar 25, 2019 02:44 AM #22

@Woodrow In the replies, a guy screenshot Goodman picking Prohm to replace Johnson an hour before he posted he didn't think Prohm would take the Bama job. Either Goodman got new info inside that hour or he's talking out of both sides of his mouth on Prohm.

Mar 25, 2019 03:01 AM #23

@Texas-Hawk-10 those isu players had a lot of team problems this year. Besides the early suspensions, they had some fist fights at practice. It was shayok that hurt his toe, slammed in the door during all of this. Don't they always have some guys in trouble?

Looks like Kelvin Sampson is staying at Houston. Good for them. Eric Musselman from Nevada is said to be a top candidate now for Arkansas. Doesn't seem to be a good fit but who knows.

Also saw last night that Jerry Stackhouse is the top candidate for Vandy. If that happens it is guaranteed to be a dumpster fire.

Apr 02, 2019 05:34 PM #37

IMHO, former NBA players generally don’t seem to make good college coaches. Jury is still out on Memphis, though....

Apr 02, 2019 06:31 PM #38

@Woodrow

Stackhouse has been coaching the G League team for Toronto (I think) for the last couple of years. The big question for those guys is whether or not they can recruit and how they handle boosters. Many of them are excellent coaches that just aren't good recruiters.

College hoops is 40% coaching, 40% recruiting and 20% booster/alumni relations. If you're a great recruiter, you can get by as a poor coach, or vice versa. But if you are weak in two areas (recruiting and alumni relations) you are screwed because that's more than half your job, no matter how good a coach you are.

Buzz Williams about to go to A&M for an obscene amount of cabbage. Prob 6 mill annual. Would make him 4th highest paid coach ahead of Self by 1.5 mill.

Apr 03, 2019 11:59 AM #42

Buzz HopYear should be his new last name. Seems to go to a new school every few years

Apr 03, 2019 12:07 PM #43

@BeddieKU23 sucks for VT. There's fear that his top talent will follow him. Top two rumour names for next hire are .... Wait for it... Gregg Marshall and WoJo!

Cronin has also come up a bit.

Apr 03, 2019 12:41 PM #45

@approxinfinity holy smokes that’s a lot of cheddar! He I going to make more than Bill! I’d imagine Bill will have his agent on the phone with Long this week 😀 in all seriousness Bill is probably underpaid .

@BeddieKU23 Gary Parrish was on the radio this week taking about how that is basically Buzz’s philosophy. If you take a new job every 5-7 years you are basically resetting your shot clock. He probably wasn’t going to do any better at Va Tech so it was a good time to get out. Also helps when A&M is going to grossly overpay you.

I do think Buzz is a great coach though. He will do well at A&M and that just adds more pressure to Shaka and Texas.

Apr 03, 2019 02:02 PM #46

It's really not though because Dixon is from LA and grew up in LA. He was also mentored by former UCLA coach Ben Howland.

UCLA has probably always been Dixon's dream coaching job having grown up with the program.

That's why he turned down the offer from UCLA to stay at Tennessee

Apr 09, 2019 02:20 AM #71

Barnes and UCLA was never going to be a good fit. Barnes has zero west coast ties so that was going to be a struggle for him.

Dixon made a lot more sense because Dixon is from LA and grew up in the shadow of UCLA.

I think this also shows that UCLA really isn't a top tier job that many think it is based on the people turning the job down.

Agree big time there. I dont think Achiuwa was staying home to play at his brothers school anyway but the move makes it a certainty.

Apr 09, 2019 04:07 PM #74

UCLA has finally found its coach. Mick Cronin from Cincinnati.

Apr 09, 2019 04:11 PM #75

@Woodrow All of this for Mick. Seems like they really, really didn't want Mick...

Seriously, this should be a wake up call to all. KU used to double salaries and it was a no brainer to come here. But now even second tier schools update their facilities, pay coaches competitive salaries, and structure contracts that are much harder to get out of. UCLA is one of the best jobs in the country and they got what looks like their 8th or 9th choice. Don't take any of our past success for granted.

Apr 09, 2019 04:28 PM #76

@Kcmatt7 I don't even think he is a good fit their at all. He is a blue collar guy from Cincy and just doesn't seem to fit in LA. I guess we will see.

I am not sure UCLA is that good of a job anymore or I think you would have seen bigger name coaches reach out and try to go there. Nobody wanted the job. I think that says a lot about where UCLA is.

Apr 09, 2019 04:53 PM #77

@Woodrow He's clearly not a great fit. But if he can surround himself with a good staff that recruits well, that can change. It also helps that they're the UA darlings and UA has really stepped up their game. I'm sure he ends up being gifted some recruits.

As far as their search, I don't think it helps that the Pac 12 is in complete disarray right now. The only coach worth poaching from inside their own conference is Altman and he's 60 and not going anywhere. You might be right that the job has lost some of it's luster. But it is still a very, very good job. I just, personally, think they went after some strange coaching choices and might have been a few years too late. They are basically in a year that there is no up-and-comer looking to score the biggest job they can get. No Archie Miller. No Holtman. No Mack. No Dan Hurley.

The biggest shocker to me was that Musselman wasn't their even close to one of their top choices. But, they clearly wanted a guy with a record of sustained success. So I think they limited their own coaching selection a bit more than they should have.

Apr 09, 2019 07:53 PM #78

@Woodrow - I'm certain Cronin will face sticker shock when he gets here. $1,000,000 homes in nice areas, heavy traffic, long commutes, $4.50+ gasoline, pressure from alums, competition from all NCAA and pro sports franchises. It ain't Cincinnati!

Should be really interesting.....

Agree. I live about 45 minutes north of Cincinnati and the cost of living is so good that many pro athletes never leave or come back after they end up at other franchises.

... and taxes. Imagine that.

But, of course, there is a wonderful climate and the ocean. That's the balance.

Apr 10, 2019 04:01 PM #81

I would never want to live in California.

Apr 10, 2019 04:35 PM #82

I definitely don't get the draw of Cali. The ocean is cold. The Beaches are crowded. The Traffic blows. The public transportation sucks. The houses are expensive. The taxes are high. The gas prices are astronomical. The food costs more.

If you want warm weather all of the time, Texas or Florida definitely seem like the better options.

Apr 10, 2019 04:50 PM #83

@Kcmatt7 Depends on what part of Texas. We lived in Houston for almost nine years - traffic is the worst pretty much anywhere. Dallas is pretty high up on the traffic suck list as well. Might as well add Austin to the list - it's despicable too.

Florida - one big ol sinkhole waiting to happen. But it's purdy.

If Self’s possible departure has been used against him, why wouldn’t the AD make some public statement related to a united front with Self?

One possibility — they ain’t. There is more chatter about this. They could quell it quite easily.

That extension would be one solid way to take care of it.

Ultimately it doesn't really mean anything but it is nice to see. Long and Self came out swinging on this subject tonight and I would bet a large part of it is to quell the rumors and calm the some of the donors. Hopefully the ball gets rolling on some player additions for next year's team.
