7-foot-3 center Matt Haarms transferring from Purdue

This dude would fit in perfectly with David MacCormick playing the foward position who knock down the mid-range, and Mitch bringing the toughness to the front court. If we can land this Matt Haarms, we're definitely final-four worthy next year.

Our offense would be disastrous playing Haarms next to McCormack and then Mitch in that rotation.

FWIW, we haven't even reached out: https://247sports.com/college/kansas/Article/Matt-Haarms-schools-Purdue-Transfer-145770680/ ↗

I'm guessing the roster is set. The only thing KU could really use is a lights out shooter but I don't see one available.

No, McCormack wasn't good at the 4 last season.

Haarms is effectively a Corvette version of Mitch Lightfoot. Good shot blocker and rim runner, gives you some shooting range, and that’s about it. He wants a much bigger role than we can offer. I do expect UK to be a player for him since EVERYONE is leaving.

Apr 07, 2020 04:45 PM #5

Sounds like we just need to stay out of Haarms' way.

(Sorry. I'm weak and it was right there.)

@BShark If David Mac has a career in basketball, it's as a step away forward. He's shown he has the mid-range jumper in his arsenal. He's definitely not a center at the next level. He knows it, that's why he's obviously been working on his shot.

Apr 07, 2020 05:17 PM #8

@Texas-Hawk-10 If D-mac takes another step forward next year, he'll be a top-5 forward in the country, no question. Right now, he has more NBA potential than any other player on next-year's roster.

Apr 07, 2020 05:18 PM #9

@SlickRockJayhawk The addition of Haarms would change that. Then David would have the second most NBA potential.

He's only a center at the next level. You are what you can guard and he sure can't defend any kind of athletic 4. The guy with the most potential on the roster is Ochai without a doubt. Can't teach that kind of athleticism. At worst he's a bench 3&D guy, at his ceiling he's Malik Beasley who really broke out this year. Plus he's not even 20 years old yet (born 4/2000). McCormack was born 7/1999, so he's almost 10 months older.

Strongly agree. If Dave can't work as a 4 in college it isn't happening at the next level.

Imo

Maybe NBA: Ochai, Enaruna, Tyon

Pro ball elsewhere: Jalen, Garrett, Dave, Silvio

??????: Bryce

I don't think we have any obvious NBA players on next years roster. At least in terms of sticking long term. Thinking the three I listed at least get a cup of coffee. Bryce is the biggest mystery to me. He has a ton of skill which works in his favor but is he athletic enough? He will have a long basketball career either way though.

Matt Haarms is soft and kind of sucks. He's a bad 3-point shooter and doesn't rebound well at all for his size. The fit offensively would be a nightmare if you started him with Dave. We're much better off going small and playing Braun or TGF. Maybe Haarms could come off the bench and be okay for us, but I'd rather just play Mitch or De Sousa at this point. Hard pass for me on Haarms.

Also, Dave averaged 7 and 4 on good efficiency in 14.7 minutes last season. Extrapolating to 30 minutes that would be about 14 and 8 as a sophomore. That's pretty good. I know Dave isn't Doke (nobody is), but he's a pretty good player who works really hard and I'm eager to see what he does with starters minutes next season.

@jayballer73

7'3? Holy smokes. That's Rudy Gobert size. Hopefully Haarms is more of a Center FOR Disease Control!

(Definitely too soon. Tyty I'll be here all night... And tomorrow night... And the night after....)

I'm not in the Haarms camp. As a BIG watcher I've seen him numerous times and you see that size come in and get scared and then watch him play and think oh, not so scary. Could he have a role on our team? I suppose, but I'm not sure how much of a game changer he is.

McCormack can't guard on the perimeter in college, how's he going to do that in the NBA? That's why he's a 5 and always will be a 5 in college and at the next level.

Haarms is listed at 7'3" and his career rebounding rate is sub 13%. His high is 13.8% as a sophomore. I cannot stress just how bad that number is for someone his size. That means he has terrible hands and is soft as baby poo on the glass.

Shot blocking is the only above average skill he has. Haarms is someone who needs to drop to the mid major level to increase his profile, not come to a place like KU and get exposed even further as being Eric Chenowith levels of soft.

Apr 07, 2020 09:39 PM #18

@SlickRockJayhawk I tend to think the guy with the highest ceiling is Ochai. Maybe even Braun before McCormack.

We never reached out. More and more likely the 13 for next year are set. I think that’s actually their preference at this point given all the uncertainty.

So, who is going to play the 5 next year? Am I missing someone, or do we only have Mitch and/or DMac to rule the paint?

The comments OMEGALUL

I think BYU was a good pick for him, he can do well in that conference. Would have been exposed in the SEC.
