Summer exhibitions: Self revealed that KU’s World University Games team would play a pair of exhibition contests against the Canadian National Team this summer in Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. It would be the week before the Jayhawks head to South Korea for the Games, which run July 3-14.

“Just because Allen Fieldhouse is not air-conditioned,” Self said of playing in KC. “It’d be hard to play a summertime game in Allen if you are able to put some people in there. It’d probably be pretty miserable. We plan on doing that the week leading up to the tour. Nothing is finalized.”

KU is allowed 12 players on its World Games roster. Svi Mykhailiuk (Ukraine) cannot play for the KU/U.S. team. If Self needs to fill out the roster, he cannot add any former KU players now in the NBA because their participation is against the NBA collective-bargaining agreement.

“It looks like all our ex-players in a development-league-type situation are too old,” Self said. “A Tyshawn (Taylor), Elijah (Johnson), Travis (Releford), they are all too old. They all turn 25 before Jan. 1. You can’t turn 25 before Jan. 1. I could possibly go try to get a guy from another school, somebody fighting to try to find his way just to fill a spot. We’re going to wait and see how many guys we have, who we sign. If we get another international player, he can’t go. Numbers may be such we may need to get a guy or two.”

I feel badly for Wayne Selden - we all (myself included) blew him up the summer before his freshman year and thought he might be 1-and-done.

Anybody see the report about the Mori being investigated for assault?

The Phoenix Suns' Morris twins live by the mantra "Family over everything."

Phoenix police say Marcus and Markieff Morris put those words into action when they and three others committed felony aggravated assault against a man the 25-year-old twins learned had sent "inappropriate" text messages to their mother.

Police have made no arrests and no charges have been filed. A spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday afternoon that prosecutors are continuing to review the case submitted by police.

For their part, the Morris twins have denied assaulting the reported victim, whom they also claim not to know, and their mother denies having been in contact with the man on the day of the incident, though authorities found evidence to the contrary, the police report shows.

The report shows the alleged victim, Erik Hood, told police he had been a mentor to the twins and supported them financially for a time when they were high school students in Philadelphia. Hood, a former professional basketball player who now works as a talent scout, also showed police photographs of himself with the Morris twins, the report said.

They later had a falling out.

MORE: Complete Phoenix Suns coverage

Hood reportedly told authorities that the text in question said he'd always be there for the Morris twins' mother, Thomasine Morris, and that he believed a friend who saw it inferred the statement to mean their relationship had become sexual.

The alleged assault occurred in January at the Nina Mason Pulliam Recreation & Sports Complex near 15th Avenue and Colter Street, where Hood and a woman had been watching a basketball game, records show.

Hood told investigators he and the woman were leaving the facility when they were accosted by Julius Kane, 25, the man Hood believes told the Morris twins about the text messages, the report said.

During the confrontation, someone punched Hood in the back of the head, and Hood tried to flee.

Police said Kane and another person caught up with Hood outside the door near some picnic tables, where someone held Hood down while others kicked and punched him, records show. Hood says he was attacked by five people, in all.

Hood reportedly escaped a second time and was near the front of the complex when the group caught up to him and assaulted him again to the point of unconsciousness, according to the police report.

Witnesses told police they saw the five subjects flee in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, but none of them were able to identify any of the subjects. Investigators reportedly interviewed about two dozen additional witnesses who said they did not see anything or could not identify those involved.

Hood, who later identified Kane and the Morris twins as three of his five attackers, suffered a broken nose, a large knot on the back of his head and abrasions, records show. The woman who accompanied Hood to the game also verified Kane and the twins as being part of the altercation.

Markieff Morris denied being part of the group of attackers but admitted being at the game. He reportedly told police he and his brother were there because they sponsor one of the teams.

Markieff and Marcus Morris declined comment after their loss in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby issued the following statement:

"The Phoenix Suns are aware of an investigation by the Phoenix Police Department of an alleged assault. We have no information beyond what has been alleged in the police report and therefore have no further comment on the matter at this time. Our organization will closely monitor developments as the legal process unfolds."

May have another scholie available. I don't have a subscription to KC.com so link is below.

Bleacher Report has Perry's mom, Fonda, saying that Perry will be filing paperwork to see what his draft projection is, although most do not have him going first round.

Kelly Oubre Jr. was first. Then Cliff Alexander. Now Kansas’ Perry Ellis is considering his own NBA Draft decision. Ellis, a junior forward, has requested information on his draft prospects through the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee Application, his mother, Fonda, told The Star on Wednesday.

ONE BAD GAME by Paul Pierce • Apr 06, 2015 07:28 PM

One Bad Game

Tales of Madness
Mar 29 2015

Behind every triumph and heartbreak in the NCAA tournament, there’s a story. The Players’ Tribune presents Tales of Madness, a series of first-person accounts from iconic basketball players recalling their most memorable tournament experiences. In this installment, Paul Pierce remembers the game that ended No. 1 Kansas’s 1997 national championship run.

Being from Inglewood, California, I was recruited very hard by Pac-10 schools out of high school.

But even though I always assumed that I would end up on the West Coast, it only took one visit to Lawrence, Kansas to convince me that I wanted to be a Jayhawk. The unrivaled passion of the fanbase just made me want to win a national championship there.

And my sophomore year, I really thought it was going to happen.

Our team was just about unstoppable that season — we started the year 22-0. ESPN was calling us the national title favorites. Our only loss during the regular season was against Mizzou in double OT, and we beat them by double-digits the next two times we faced them.

We entered the 1997 NCAA tournament that year as the No. 1 overall seed and won our first two games convincingly. In the Sweet 16, we were set to face No. 4 Arizona. We had beaten them the previous season in the Sweet 16, so I felt like we were ready.

Arizona was good — they had a tremendous backcourt comprised of Mike Bibby and Jason Terry — but I didn’t have much doubt that we would win. Honestly, I thought we would crush them. Our team was stacked with NBA talent. The expectation was that we were going to bulldoze through the early rounds of the tournament. I had my sights set on the Final Four, where I figured we’d probably meet Kentucky, the defending national champs. That was the game we were all looking forward to.

But Arizona came to play, and we weren’t at our best.

It was pretty close throughout, but late in the second half, the Wildcats built a lead that was as many as 13 late in the game.

I remember that we were down 79-71 with just over 1:30 left and Arizona had to inbound the ball under their own basket, so we started pressing. They threw the ball long and I deflected it like I was a cornerback, which led to a steal and a bucket.

Down by six.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, we pressed again and I came up with another steal — it was unbelievable.

We went down the court and swung it around to Billy Thomas, who hit a three-pointer to bring us within three with a minute left. And at that time, I started to get really excited. We had all the momentum. I thought I was about to be part of an exciting win on our way to the national championship.

With 18 seconds left we were still down by three. I wanted the ball in that situation. I’ve always loved those moments, from the time that I was in high school to today as a 17-year NBA veteran.

I found an open spot on the perimeter, but the ball never came to me and we missed our last shot.

Coming all the way back from a big deficit and me not having a crack at the final shot made it hurt that much worse. I just remember crying in the locker room after that game. All of us were crying — the entire team was completely devastated. To us, it was a wasted season.

I played with Jason Terry in Boston and Brooklyn the last couple of years, and we’d talk about this game from time to time. It was memorable for both of us for very different reasons.

The tournament is unforgiving. If you have one bad game, that’s it. Throughout my career I’ve had many losses, but all these years later, this is one that still stings.

Now they need to go out and slay Coach K!

Can't wait to see Frank school Oakafor.

$18 million GUARANTEED for 6 years! Listened to him and he presented himself well and said he was bringing his own staff in. He met with the players before the presser and knows he is going to be limited in running havoc system with what he has now but will look to recruit what he needs to run. No one asked him about the other coaches in the conf. He did throw out he has never been to Austin and had been to SA, Dallas and Houston. Yes he did say his havoc style worked in SA a couple years ago and got a hearty laugh from the crowd. Brings excitement AND his mother who he said would be at every game.

@nuleafjhawk Don't think its real money though. He's a paper tiger. He won't ever run because he would have to release financials and his gig would be up.

@nuleafjhawk Talking to yourself puts you in the same league as "The Donald".

@Crimsonorblue22 Only one so far I have heard is I. Taylor tweeted last night a welcome Coach Smart. People here are thinking he would be staying based on those 3 words?????????

@nuleafjhawk No need to. You just tap danced around it.

Press Conference set for 4:30 today CDT at the Erwin Center. He has issued a statement saying something like there is a tremendous amount of talent to be tapped in Texas.

@drgnslayr I can now breathe a big sigh of relief. I could have NEVER EVER watched another UT game if Marshall had been chosen.

@nuleafjhawk As I stated above, most Longhorn Network folks reported that Marshall just didn't have the charisma that UT needs and for the commitments required to the Longhorn Network and being the guy out there raising money for the new facility. They talked to people in Wichita who didn't mince words.

Shaka has met with AD and reports here in Austin is that Shaka has a team meeting scheduled for 8 pm. Also most Longhorn Network folks report that Marshall just didn't have the charisma that UT needs and for the commitment for the Longhorn Network and raising money for the new facility.

Add in the fact that Shaka and Charlie Strong worked together at Florida.

AP source: Texas to meet with VCU's Smart to present offer

Updated: Apr 01, 2015 9:46 PM CDT

By JIM VERTUNO
AP Sports Writer
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas athletic director Steve Patterson is scheduled to travel Thursday to meet with Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart to make an offer to coach the Longhorns, a person with knowledge of the trip tells The Associated Press.

Texas hopes to introduce Smart as its new coach as early as Friday, according to the person who requested anonymity because the talks with Smart are considered private.

Patterson has zeroed in on Smart since firing Rick Barnes last weekend after 17 seasons. Smart, 37, has been among the hot candidates for several high-profile jobs since leading VCU to the 2011 Final Four.

Smart's teams have won at least 26 games each of the past six seasons.

Barnes' Texas teams won three Big 12 titles and made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances. But Texas hasn't advanced past the first weekend of the tournament since 2008.

Rick Barnes • Mar 31, 2015 05:36 AM

@REHawk That was nothing more than masking the fact that Barnes was not a good offensive coach and getting people to feel sorry for him. No players shed any tears believe me. He was just not liked. Mack Brown was offered the same deal a year before he left, made the changes in his line coaches and still made no diff. Barnes thinking of being noble here earned the same result for his assistants. -- all out of a job regardless.

Oh he has plenty of orange ties to take to Tennessee too!

@drgnslayr He held nothing back after the loss to Butler saying he didn't understand why Coach had him sitting on the bench. Was never a fan favorite either. Kinda unspoken here that he probably regretted signing with UT because he is actually worse off after the year he had.

He'll be DLeague at best. He's not ready any more than Oubre is ready.

Rick Barnes • Mar 30, 2015 03:43 PM

Listened to all the local Austin sports talk this am and most bandied about was that Shaka is THE front runner and Marshall is not considered to be part of the discussion.

Most salient point I heard was that Barnes and Izzo are the same age and look at what Izzo has done compared to what Barnes has done.

Finally, Myles Turner tweeted out this morning that he was not coming back to UT and was headed to the draft.

@Crimsonorblue22 They banned it here in Austin in Jan. with a 3 month window to get a warning but that has NOT stopped people from hiding the fact that they are doing it. On top of that they CAN do it if stopped at a light so now you have idiots holding up traffic while they sit at the light. The TX legislature did just pass a State-Wide Ban but seriously as big as Texas is - even just the 4 large metro areas - there aren't enough cops in the world to enforce anything. The governor still has to sign it into law and Gov. "Oops" Perry did not sign it 2 years ago.

And I did have someone bang into my car in a parking lot just last week and drive off without fessing up to it. $900 damage just like that. Try to have something nice and someone is always trying to make sure you don't.

A Juicy New Rumor About Cliff • Mar 24, 2015 01:27 PM

@RedRooster Having worked in the legal field for 30 years with a large part of that in commercial lending, a required document in this case is called a "Guaranty Agreement", whereby a person independent of the maker of the loan agrees to repay said loan if the maker of the loan defaults. Cliff is the only one that is scheduled to be making the money that would have to be used to repay and, thus, could be the only one to guarantee the payment, unless his Mom or Dad put up their house as collateral. A car wouldn't cut it as far as comparable worth.

Go Huggy and Lon! • Mar 24, 2015 11:50 AM

Ruh Ro!!

Shortly after West Virginia’s 69-59 win over Maryland Sunday night in the NCAA tournament, two daughters of Mountaineers Coach Bob Huggins tweeted out rape-related jokes in regard to the Terps’ Dez Wells. Jenna Leigh Huggins subsequently deleted those tweets from her account.

On Monday, Bob Huggins' daughter took to Twitter again, this time to post several apologies:

Last night on Twitter I made a mistake in saying what I did about Dez Wells.

— Jenna Leigh Huggins (@JennaLeigh44) March 23, 2015

I want to apologize to Dez Wells, the UM team, the University, it's fans, and the Jewish community for my remarks.

— Jenna Leigh Huggins (@JennaLeigh44) March 23, 2015

It was an exciting game between two great teams and emotions were out of line. I was wrong to say those things and I am sorry.

— Jenna Leigh Huggins (@JennaLeigh44) March 23, 2015

I also want to apologize to WVU. Mountaineers are better than that, and I have learned a valuable lesson.

— Jenna Leigh Huggins (@JennaLeigh44) March 23, 2015

Coach Huggins’s other daughter, Jacqueline, had also appeared to have posted these tweets Sunday night: “NO MEANS NO DEZ!” and “Hey #Maryland yell “airball” all you want at Wan, because at the end of the day…. Dez is still a [expletive] RAPIST.”

That Twitter account, @JacqueHuggins, has been taken private, and those tweets appear to have been deleted. At this point, she is not known to have made any form of apology.

It's Venting Time • Mar 23, 2015 05:52 PM

Varied opinions here. FWIW, the inconsistencies throughout the season gave me a reasoned approach to how far this team was going to go and I was chastised for saying we wouldn't make the Sweet 16 and told I wasn't a fan for not "cheering" for them. Reality is this team did not ever put back-to-back dominant games (or even back-to-back halves - except the game I saw here in Austin). I really hated reading quotes from players saying they weren't ready yesterday. WTF? That attitude right there across the board with both the team/coaches has been the most disappointing.

One good thing - I now have lots of time to tend to my garden (have 60 tomato plants already in the ground) and be outside to enjoy this wonderful time of year.
