He is beyond genius.

This is more like savant.

Repeat: away from Ellis down low. they are suckering the ball into him because they know they can eat him alive on the baseline.

Can We Win Another Big 12 Championship? • Jan 07, 2015 11:44 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Texas shot 28% from trey on 21 treys.

Texas shot 30% from due on probably 45 2ptas.

Hello, Rick, you should have shot 45 fewer 2 ptas and 45 more treys and you probably would have been in the game at the end.

And if you had shot 45 more 3ptas you probably would have shot your way out of your 3pt slump and averaged something closer to 30-35% on treys. Bingo! You might have won.

New rule: Never, never, never, never, never, keep shooting inside when your FG% falls below 45%. Oh, what the hell, I'll be conservative. Say 40%.

JUST STOP YOURSELF.

SHOOT TREYS INSTEAD.

Can We Win Another Big 12 Championship? • Jan 07, 2015 11:35 PM

@REHawk

Once again, Butcher was out maneuvered by an Okie Baller.

I watched some of it and he seemed to not want to take the gloves off, because OU had that big load in the paint and a lot of physical guys elsewhere. Inference: he figured getting rough would have backfired. But that loss will make him take the gloves off next game.

I haven't made any predictions about the conference title. I wanted to wait and see some teams. OU and Texas I saw. ISU and OSU I saw.

The OU win reminds me that the "toughest" team is going to win the title.

I think OU is the toughest and has the inside track.

But I think KU is going to find a way to tie with OU.

I didn't before UNLV, but that game made me think Self finally has an approach the guys can believe in.

KU could easily go down to Daylor, because Mason and Oubre are due to flame out, but...

I think KU will beat Faylor.

Self showed so many formations, actions, tempos and moved the team between a block out rebounding bunch to a run and jump rebounding bunch that Drew won't really know what to prepare for.

Make Scott think too much and he is beaten out of the blocks.

Self is particularly clever at getting out of the blocks with a W.

If Self will keep letting the treys fly, but redistribute the shooting of them away from Mason and Oubre, and onto Brannen and Svi more, and keep Selden and Perry yanking the lanyards, we will separate from the outside each half and then go inside and break them.

Outside in.

Shoot the trey and transition when you can.

@Jesse-Newell

You raise a intriguing point: the similarity between the Vegas Lines and KENPOM.

Having worked some with stats and computer modeling, I believe it is rather unusual for nonparametric statistical modeling to coincide closely in predictions with other non parametric statistical modeling, unless both are using essentially like modeling assumptions, and like non parametrically applied statistical models, and like data sets.

Is Vegas relying on KENPOM?

Or Vegas oddsmakers working with a stat model essentially the same as KENPOM?

How do they come out similarly?

If I recall correctly, and I am not absolute sure that I do, you and others have noted a lot of variance between KENPOM and other ranking and predictive systems regarding rankings and predictive spreads.

Predictions: Kansas vs Baylor • Jan 07, 2015 08:37 PM

@JhawkAlum

Shoot the trey. Transition when they can.

Have Perry, Brannen and Svi do the trey shooting, because Perry and Svi will be shooting up to average and Brannen will be cycling up and down around his average, because he is at his average. Trust in Brannen's gun. The guy is clearly volatile enough in the rest of his game to be "A Shootist."

Tell Frank and Kelly, at 51 and 48% to take the first trey look they get. If they make, keep shooting, but once they miss, then tell them to lay off the trey until the TTech game and let them shoot o-fer against a cellar dweller, so they'll be ready to shoot back to average againt OSU and be scorching against ISU and OU. In short, let them shoot out of their slumps against a crappy team, when it won't sink us.

BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THE REST OF THE TEAM SHOULD STOP TAKING TREYS!!!!!!!

(Note: that was put in CAPS to make sure @HighEliteMajor and others partial to the rain-threes philosophy did not infarct.)

After KU has taken twelve first half treys--15 if Self's heart will stand it--then go inside as follows: MOBILE BIG MAN ATTACK PLATFORM (MBMAP). Two high posts with Kelly Oubre on a slightly low wing. Ball to Kelly, Kelly fakes the trey and goes to iron first possession. Second possession, ball to Kelly, Kelly fakes the drive and high post closest to Kelly breaks hard down the lane for a pass and a dunk and a FT. Third possession, ball to Kelly, Kelly fakes shot, high post closest to Kelly breaks hard down the lane and the other high post follows on his tail like an I-back following a full back into a hole. Short two with foul and a FT. Kelly fakes drive and feeds the trailing high post man. Next possession, ball to Kelly. Kelly throws to high post nearest him. Kelly breaks hard to rim and alley oop and dunk. Next possession, ball to Kelly, high post nearest Kelly screens back side high post. Backside high post scrapes off his man and Kelly feeds him at the glass--short two with foul and FT. Next possession. Ball to Kelly, sound familiar? Shoot the trey. Next possession, ball to Kelly, shoot the trey. Next possession, fake the trey, kick to Frank, shoot the trey.

Repeat the above the second half.

KU by 18.

@Kip_McSmithers

Awesome! Thx.

@VailHawk triggered me into fleshing out this idea on another thread. It grew out of an idea that has been percolating since last summer...

Also, I think there is a fourth track that no recent coach has tried systematically yet, since Wooden: the mobile big man attack platform.

Self is increasingly deploying the two posts out high.

Recall Marcus Morris and Thomas Robinson putting it on the deck from a single high post and driving the lane. It was called the stretch four by Self. Stretch 4 fakes the trey and drives the lane.

Take this concept and broaden to three mobile bigs that are threats to drive it. Two high posts and a long 3 aka Ellis, Cliff/Jamari, and Oubre, who plays very tall.

Self is already showing this formation frequently. And he is establishing that Ellis and Oubre can knock down the Trey. And Cliff/Jam seem always to have the mobility edge on other 5s.

The next step is to have them start attacking the rim from outside, both by driving and running cuts for passes at the rim.

There was an old saying in football when playing teams with giant tackles: run the asses off their fat tackles.

Make bigger big men than yours run.

Make UK's four footers not just chase out, but run back in--all game.

MOBILE BIG MAN ATTACK PLATFORMS.

Some dribble driving, but lots more cutting to the iron.

Run the asses off their big footers.

Shaka Smart ran the asses off our Morri and beat us.

The real precedent though is Wooden's 6-8 Wicks, 6-6 Rowe, 6-9 Patterson team that put Patterson at long balling high post and Wicks and Rowe as mobile attacking bigs on low wings.

Self is near doing the same but with a double high post and one mobile attacking big--Oubre--on the wing.

It is like an unbalanced to the right version of what Wooden did.

And I have said once or twice since Summer that Self needed to consider Wooden's Wicks-Rowe-Patterson team, not just the super short '63 team and Self's Tulsa team for precedents.

MOBILE BIG MAN ATTACK PLATFORMS.

This is a fourth track and I believe Self is exploring it as we post.

He may have waited too long to cornerstone on it this season, but it is the best option for this team after the trey ball and it fits with outside in.

@VailHawk

Inside out would be logical to use whenever our big men can dominate their big men.

Inside out would also have to be considered whenever their perimeter can lock down our perimeter.

If some one can dominate our bigs AND lock down our perimeter, then we resort to the in between game, transition, secondary breaks, 3/4 court 2-2-1 zone press and XTREME Havok wreaking to try exceed their FGAs by 10. Probably wouldn't work, but it would be the logical default.
