WTF, a 28 point swing the last 2 drives.

It’s a terrible format and won’t be better next year when it expands to 32 teams. Next year is supposed to be 4 groups of 8 teams with each team playing 3 pre determined opponents in their group and using the same tiebreakers as this year, meaning point differential, to determine the winner of each of the 4 groups. Just like this year, the two group winners with the highest point differential will meet in the “championship” game and the two group winners with the lowest point differential will meet in the 3rd place game.

The organizers are trying to make this into a soccer tournament style format, but it doesn’t work for basketball. There’s too much outside money involved and the format is way too easy for someone to manipulate an outcome for extra money they wouldn’t otherwise receive.

Based on attendance this year, I can’t see the Big 12 schools especially coming out ahead here since 8 are playing every year and it sounds like KU is one of the schools that signed a multi year deal with this event so it sounds like this is our MTE for the next several years.

Last year for the Duke game, I spent about $1k for flights, 3 nights in a hotel, tickets, food, and shows in Vegas. This year, for 2 extra nights and games, it was going to be somewhere between $2,000 and $2,500 to go out there and I wasn’t abiut to do that this year. I imagine pricing will be similar or more expensive going forward so I can’t see myself making that trip again for KU which has been the reason for my two trips out there.

Wake Forest lost by 1 in OT to Michigan.

Very thankful we didn’t have to play Michigan in Vegas. 40 over SDSU, 30 over Auburn, and currently up 45 on Gonzaga with about 5 minutes left.

Bring on UConn!!

This is a going to be a huge win for KU. Tennessee is a top 10 team and will be most of the year and probably the best team in the SEC this season.

Hit both of these and I’ll feel good about it.

Too many ghosts from the Houston game last year for me to say it yet.

I know the logic was to run enough time off so Tennessee couldn’t get a great look, but I hate that strategy in the first half.

Self essentially played 7 against Notre Dame and 6 against Syracuse with all 5 starters playing 30+ minutes yesterday. Considering how many shots KU is missing short tonight, that’s a classic sign of tired legs.

So, that would argue for playing Ngala, Calderon and Mbyia a handful of minutes each. That seems to be what other teams are doing, at least early in the year. Same issue every year - apparently our 8-9-10 guys are much worse than their counterparts even on teams with clearly lesser talent overall…

This is how Self has always been though. He coaches to win every game instead of getting those 8-9-10 players experience in close games against good team that can pay dividends in March. Obviously Self’s philosophy and approach has been highly successful so it’s hard to argue too much against it, but each approach has merit.

Mbyia is getting ready to be forced into action with White gone and Tiller with 4 now.

@wissox Two best teams I’ve seen so far this year Arizona followed by Duke. Michigan is making a pretty good case for themselves the past couple days with a 40 point win over San Diego St. and a 30 point win over Auburn.

@Zabudda Yes, Tiller will remain a starter and it will likely be Rosario/McDowell coming off the bench whenever Peterson returns (hopefully against UConn).

I don’t care about the championship here, I want KU to play a good team because Notre Dame and Syracuse are unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament. I’d much rather see KU play Michigan, Gonzaga, or Auburn to close it out and get another game against a really good team to help Flory and Tiller play without fouling.

@approxinfinity Tre White was someone KU recruited out of high school and I believe committed to KU at one point before going his odyssey. With Council, KU was initially looking at a different player at St. Bonnie’s, but ended up loving Council more.

@rockchalkjayhawk I was at the Duke game last year, it felt like a tournament atmosphere inside the arena. I also went to a session of the Player’s Era last year because ticket prices were relatively cheap.

I had a chance to get presale tickets this year because of going to the Duke game last year and didn’t. Last year I flew out on Sunday and flew home on Wednesday and was able to get heavily discounted room with my Caesar’s Rewards point and only had to lay the resort fees.

Because of the schedule this year, I would’ve had to fly out on Sunday and fly home Friday this year to make all 3 games because of not knowing when game 3 would take place. I don’t think a lot of people want to spend their Thanksgiving in Vegas. I didn’t have the points to get a comped room so I would’ve had to pay for 5 nights this year. If you haven’t been to Vegas recently, everything on the Strip has become extremely expensive. It would’ve cost me about triple what I spent last year to go and with Notre Dame and Syracuse being underwhelming opponents, I couldn’t justify it this year.

Can we run the ball on Friday? Do that and KU will jave a chance considering KSU just ran for almost 500 yards on Utah today.

Utah should also be extremely motivated after their close call today because they are the second team out of the CFP behind BYU right now.

Council is Tyshawn before the second half of 2012. He can be the best player on tge court for both teams at the same time.

There were some positives tonight. Flory and Tiller did a really nice job on Boozer making him work tonight. 18 points in 17 shot attempts is good defense.

Without Peterson, this team does struggle to make shots which was a concern heading into this season. There’s been a lot of good looks that haven’t fallen so hopefully they have a game at some point where the shots fall and build up tge confidence.

I still think this group has Elite 8/Final 4 potential this season, but getting Peterson back healthy is a big part of that along with Tiller becoming more consistent with his shots as well.

Zero percent chance he willingly sits out until the draft. This is one of the strongest draft classes in recent history and plenty of players that would leapfrog Peterson if he sat out. Dybansta, Boozer, Koa Peat, Nate Ament, Caleb Wilson, and Mikel Brown would all likely jump Peterson in the draft costing him millions of dollars.

Current NBA players, scouts and execs have compared his game and work ethic to Kobe. Kobe was not a player who load managed, he wanted to be on the floor no matter what. That was a factor in him tearing his achilles because he came back too early from a calf strain.

Peterson would play if the decision was left to him because he is a competitor. He’s being held out by Self and the training staff to protect him from himself in the long term because as much as we all love KU, playing for a specific college isn’t the end goal or dream of 99% of basketball players, it’s to play professionally in the NBA.

If DP was protecting himself for the draft, he would not miss the Duke game. That game is too big and features one of the other players in contention for the top pick in 2026 and Peterson wouldn’t willingly miss that game and match up that could help cement himself as the top pick in 2026.

Vaughn, currently at 50 could coach for 15 or so years if he took over in the next couple of years. He also has strong NBA connections that would be a selling point for high level recruits and transfers with NBA potential.

If he’s missing the Duke game, there’s a legit issue with his hamstring going on. If it was just Self and DP doing load management, DP wouldn’t skip playing against fellow #1 pick contender Cam Boozer. That would be a showcase game for him not to skip.

They’re better drivers than shooters. Elmarko still can’t play off ball which was his issue as a freshman. He’s looked a bit better when he’s running the second unit with the ball in his hands. Elmarko needs to watch film on Stephen Curry to see how to play without the ball in his hands. Obviously he’ll never be the shooter Curry is, but Curry is the greatest off ball player in NBA history and there’s a lot to learn from studying him.

With Council, it appears he’s still adjusting to the speed of P5 basketball. I think he’ll be fine long term here. He’s never been a great shooter and that’s not going to change, but he’s always been aggressive in driving the ball and getting to the line and putting pressure on opposing defenses.

There’s obviously still tinkering going on with rotations and line ups and learning to play without Peterson which is going to be huge in the long run for KU in March.

We’ll see what Peterson’s status is for Tuesday, but I’m fulling expecting him to play and show out against fellow #1 pick contender Cam Boozer because I think this is more load management and protecting the goods more than anything else with him. If Peterson doesn’t play Tuesday though, that’s going be a red flag that his hamstring issue is more serious than the staff is portraying it to be at the moment.

Overall, this was a nice win against a team with a good shot at making the NCAA Tournament where we saw this team working through stuff in real time and figuring some stuff out.

@DCHawker A lot of the 3’s KU has taken have been good looks within the flow of the offense. It’d be nice to see more drop, but as long as they aren’t forcing it, it shouldn’t be a big issue.

This is essentially a 3rd exhibition games for KU. We know this is a great defensive team. I think the offense will get there, but they just need more time playing together to build chemistry. I still don’t see this being an elite offense, but they should still be pretty good by March.

He’s starting over Dawson and Jackson, As long he plays with effort and isn’t afraid to let it rip from 3, he’ll be fine.

My concern is if this team ends up becoming too reliant on Peterson to do everything on offense.

Most of our players aren’t tall, but they’re long which is why they’re able to defend well. Length is more important than just heighth when it comes to defense which is why Dejuan was as good a defender as he was despite his athletic limitations.

Where does the $28 million it’ll cost to fire Leipold after this season come from? I doubt Florida is looking to spend that kind of money on top of the $21 million they’re paying Napier for Leipold. Florida is going to make a run at Lane Kiffin and then Missouri’s coach.

Wisconsin isn’t firing Fickel either since that’ll cost them $25 million for Fickel’s buyout and Wisconsin has always been a school hesitant to open their checkbooks.

Maybe he was thinking too much instead of just playing. I’m not sure he is completely over that but I think he’s come a long ways!

Elmarko as a freshman was put into a position he wasn’t ready for or practiced for because of Morris. Elmarko was supposed to be Dejuan’s back up and first guard off the bench. Morris getting kicked off the team forced Elmarko into a starting role in a position he hadn’t been playing much and it showed all season.

He gets one more season with his shiny toys to recruit to. If he misses a bowl next season though you have to move on. He’s done a ton for the program and whoever the next coach is after him needs to send a massive thank you. But the reality is the standard for a P5 team like KU should be to make a bowl game 2 of every 3 seasons to keep your job from here on out.

Leipold’s buyout is currently about $28 million and would be about $23 million after next season. Considering the donor checkbooks are slowing right now and the national economy is headed towards a recession, Leipold isn’t getting fired after this season and he’s not likely getting fired after next season either unless you know where KU is going to find an extra $60 million or so for Leipold and staffs buyouts and hiring a new staff. Throw that on top of potentially having to replace Bill Self in the next couple of years as well and I think Goff is going to be more concerned with making sure he has the budget for for basketball than football at the moment.
