The riots last year were despicable and no one I know condoned them. Every one in participation with looting, tipping and burning police vehicles, etc. should be arrested. It would make an argument that they are domestic terrorist.

However, what happened today at the Capital, the Capital of the fucking United States, was not an apples to apples comparison. Each scenario started off peaceful in both respective sides. The difference here? I mean a huge difference here is treason. Plan and simple. The argument to even hint otherwise stops there.

Also this is a legit question, sorry if it’s dumb. Pence is immune right? So can vaccinated people spread the virus? Not sure how all of it interacts. Been too swamped to dig into all the deets

@FarmerJayhawk just talked to my dr friend tonight. Vaccinations have not been proved to keep you from spreading it. That's why u still have to wear a mask.

DD is going through a rough time because he only cares about ds and rs. And now the dems have the presidency, the senate and the house. What DD doesn't realize is that it doesn't matter. It will be absolutely amusing to see nothing happen even though the dems really won't be able to blame the gop anymore.

That's a fair point @FarmerJayhawk. I still don't like it at all. Pence understands the optics of what he is doing by being the only guy without a mask and presiding over the ceremony. Just because you can, does not mean you should (@Crimsonorblue22 s point aside that it's not to assume that you can)

@approxinfinity Ignoring button worked for me for the past year with some people. And my gosh, how delightful it has been to stop worrying about people who ignore facts and perpetrate lies.

But I will say, watching the proceedings last night, I often did see Pence wearing a mask when the debate was occurring and he was playing no role except calling on people. Other times, he didn't. Almost everyone except Bennet (Colo) took their masks off when talking.

But at least Pence was more distant from most people when he was on the dais.

What a day.

I am 100% ignorant when it comes to politics. I know nothing about it. I don't claim to and I really don't want that to change.

But WHY do we have to have "parties"? (which, by the way, our government is no party - that's the one thing I do know)

Why can't we just have men or women run for office based on their qualifications. On their character. On their morals.

I know I'm an idiot, but when I start my own country, that's what I'm implementing. After I give up my Dictatorship.

Believe me I would LOVE to see some things get done now in regards to medical and climate change but why would the capitalists in charge give up some of their bread?

@mayjay when I watched everyone was wearing a mask while talking except Pence. But it's good to know he wore the mask at other times.

I know I'm an idiot, but when I start my own country, that's what I'm implementing. After I give up my Dictatorship.

In short, the coalition instinct. Our system is first past the post and single member districts, so things naturally sort into two parties. It started immediately in the election of 1796 with Federalists (Adams) and Democratic-Republicans (Jefferson). As one party collapsed, another takes its place almost immediately. Whigs replaced the Federalists, Republicans replaced the Whigs. D-R’s eventually split and became just Democrats. Third parties that pop up almost always get absorbed into one of the two major parties. The Teddy Roosevelt Bull Moosers went away and many became progressive D’s boosting FDR’s New Deal.

The other part of it is voter information and ballot access. Voters generally do almost no research whatsoever. It’s all name ID and partisanship. Most voters walk in the booth and vote for their party all the way down. Back in the day of machine politics some voting machines would vote straight ticket for you if you wanted. They even made a certain noise so poll workers could.. uhhh.. monitor the count in real time and make... adjustments. So there’s a lot of brand equity in the parties at this point. Voters understand their side good other side bad and the actual candidates don’t matter all that much. Our system is also set up to where if you want to run, it’s very easy to get on the ballot as a D or R. You just pay the fee or collect a small number of voter signatures. As an independent, you have to collect A LOT of signatures and do all the legwork of explaining who you are to people since they’re so used to not doing any research and just voting D or R. Hope that explains things a bit.
