All signs point to KU being a #3 seed. Hopefully we get good matchups and more importantly fingers crossed our players will be able to play. I've been on the edge of my seat for 2 days now waiting for positive and bad news.

How does KU have a good draw? This is probably a worst case scenario of a draw for KU.

We should beat EWU, but we won't have Jalen Wilson this weekend and David McCormack won't be 100% and USC has 7 foot Pac 12 POY Evan Mobley. Should KU somehow manage to reach the S16, the likely match up would be NPOY Luka Garza and Iowa. Iowa is one of the best scoring teams and KU is a team that struggles to score.

So no, KU did not get a good draw, they got about as bad of a draw as possible with their current roster situation.

Mar 14, 2021 10:20 PM #25

And we likely won't have anyone to match up with Mobley if that's the match up because Wilson won't be back yet and McCormack won't be 100% at that point if he's even cleared for that game.

Mar 14, 2021 10:22 PM #27

Mar 14, 2021 10:23 PM #28

Mar 14, 2021 10:23 PM #29

@Kcmatt7

So does Illinois

Mar 14, 2021 10:23 PM #30

Illinois has a couple of potentially brutal second round and S16 match ups with Loyola in the second round and Oklahoma St. in the S16.

Mar 14, 2021 10:24 PM #31

@BeddieKU23 Illinois has a hell of a shot at a FF with that draw

You do realize that KU will be without Jalen Wilson the first two games and even if David McCormack is playing (possibility he won't play either), he won't be 100%. KU got out into a bracket with great big men while dealing with their own big men issues. KU got a worst case scenario match up for having issues with their two best offensive post players.

Mar 14, 2021 10:38 PM #39

Any additional game is gravy, IMO. I'll be holding my breath until tip off in round 1.

Also, a lot could happen between now and the second weekend.

@Kcmatt7 said in Selection Sunday:

Don't know yet. He still has to have 7 straight negative tests before he could head out to Indy. One of the big things with Covid during recovery is not having a lot of energy so even if Dave clears protocol, he likely won't have a lot of stamina and would be playing below 100%. I don't think KU would need McCormack to beat EWU, but USC or Wichita/Drake are another matter.

And we don’t even know if he has covid.

Mar 14, 2021 10:53 PM #47

A lot of people not thrilled with the draw, but we'll see. Kansas is a 3-seed for a reason. If we can beat Baylor we can beat USC or Iowa. Just need to play hard the whole game.

Mar 14, 2021 10:54 PM #48

@KirkIsMyHinrich

Usually need your whole team though for that and now everything thrown out the door with Dave and jalen on covid protocol. Basically everything could be lost that was built

Mar 14, 2021 10:56 PM #49

We'll just have to do the best we can with the players we have available. Being a 3-seed and not having the whole roster may result in our guys playing looser, with a nothing-to-lose sort of mentality.

Mar 14, 2021 11:07 PM #50

There is no reason this team can't get to the elite 8 playing the way it has played the past month. Its up to the players and Self to make it happen. Iowa as a 2 seed is laughable. Oregon is not the normal Oregon, USC is average. Seriously KU has played 10 teams tougher then this group in the bottom end of the bracket

Mar 14, 2021 11:09 PM #51

Can’t really do better than that. Let’s roll

Mar 15, 2021 12:08 AM #62

You know here is a thought. I think some people are over reacting here just a smidge maybe possibly. - - Dave & Tristian were put in the COVID protocol , BUT that doesn't mean they have the COVID. Being put in protocol is strictly more for contact tracing , - - meaning they have come in contact with some one who tested positive for COVID or had some of the symptoms of COVID.- -that doesn't mean that Dave or Tristan had any symptoms, the KU staff Could very well put them in quarintine for safety precautions for the rest of the team. Hell they may not have had any symptoms of the COVID KU just following procedure like the word says following protocol you still have to spend X amount of days. - -hell I was exposed had to quarintine & follow timeline protocol - let's not over react - -I think we get them both back and we will be fine by the weekend, with KU taking on those precautions and following procedure they should be able to continue to test negative, were going to be as good as possible - -only one and he is a big one BUT THINK WE WILL BE ALL RIGHT. - - rock chalk all day long baby

Mar 15, 2021 12:16 AM #63

Maybe Tristan will step up in place of Jalen

Mar 15, 2021 12:17 AM #64

KU plays at 1:00 Sat - -Dam looks like everybody is playing at 1:00 on the day they are surpose to play. - - Reading this off CBS sports

Dam re-traction CBS is screwy now these times keep changing guess we will find out for sure later lol

Mar 15, 2021 12:36 AM #66

Mar 15, 2021 02:46 AM #71

@JAYHAWKFAN214 thx! They don’t announce mon’s game till after the sat game, right?

Mar 15, 2021 03:27 AM #72

@Crimsonorblue22 We won't know specific times, channels, or venues for Monday's games until late Saturday night. What's weird and different is games from the same part of the bracket aren't on the same channel. Normally the KU and USC 1st round games would be on the same channel, but not this year. It's also weird to me that those two games aren't even in the same venue either.

Mar 15, 2021 04:02 AM #73

Anyone considered that Dave plays better tired anyway?

Also, pretty sure KU doesn’t have a single loss this year to any team lower than an 8 seed in this tournament. That’s solid. KU has wins over a 1 seed, a couple of 3 seeds and a handful of other tournament teams as well. Several of those happening when we were all down on this team.

Are they a title favorite? Of course not. Do they have a shot? Honestly probably about as good as most years. This tournament is always a crapshoot and I think will be even more so this year. Hell we could end up forfeiting the first game or getting a literal pass to the elite 8.

I’m glad this team found itself I. The end and was able to prove they were capable of some pretty entertaining, high quality basketball. Can they sustain that high level for 6 games? Probably not. But maybe the opponent won’t be up that game either.

I think we can beat Gonzaga. And if we can beat them who can’t we beat? (Texas, I’m not sure we can beat Texas this year...). Our D has vastly improved since giving up nearly 100 to the zags. Och makes some early threes? Braun drops a couple from way deep? We get a great half out of Dave... we’d have a ball game for sure.

Definitely time to sit back and enjoy every last second of basketball we get at this point!

Rock Chalk

I do realize that. I don't care. Here's what I know I do have at this moment. The best coach in the NCAA. The best defensive player in the NCAA. 1 less defensive liability (wilson) off the court. A resurgent Christian Braun (yes, I firmly believe he turns it around in March...he took a month off. He's following the Malik Newman workout plan). An Ochai who's going to take all that emotion from the Big 12 and continue on.

We're good. I'm not worried about it.

Mar 15, 2021 12:13 PM #77

Wow- a lot of positivity in this thread! Love it! From people who are doubtlessly more knowledgeable about D1 hoops than me ...( a few years ago I would have bet real serious money on Quentin Grimes having a suck year after he left us for Houston, which shows I clearly don’t have a clue)

And yes not that worried about Jalen not being there for the first weekend although he has been rebounding well lately to balance out his spotty D and really forced offense - (Dedrick Lawson anyone? )But Jalen may well be the key for weekend number 2.

Mar 15, 2021 01:07 PM #78

@Bosthawk

The rebounding without Jalen is absolutely a huge concern. He's the leading rebounder on this team by a good margin, especially on defense where he averages almost 1/4 of defensive rebounds for this team while he's on the floor. Put it another way, Jalen had 9 or more boards in 9 of his past 11 games. Huge not having him.

Mar 15, 2021 02:05 PM #79

well onlt two of our Big 12 play late. - -We play at 1:15 on TBS

Mar 15, 2021 06:41 PM #80

There is ONE game that I think might be pretty interesting opening round game , and that is the North Carolina game - -could be quite the match up.

Also like they were saying on Bracketology last night I think Oklahoma State got screwed by being a 4 seed. -- Should of been a three for sure
