Early league schedule is a cakewalk. Non-con is uncharacteristically soft too. Unless Remy just isn't good it's hard to see how we don't get a top 2 seed.

Sep 15, 2021 08:23 PM #2

Bit of a double edged-sword -- we should be favored in every non-conference game,but relatively soft schedule will negatively impact power rankings compared to past years. If the team comes together, not inconceivable that we could be undefeated heading into the conference schedule. But, that depends on how we do out of the gate - haven't always been sharp (e.g, v. Duke in MSG) - and how we do in road games - last year, not great....

Sep 15, 2021 09:42 PM #3

@DCHawker I would imagine the team loses some unexpected games (seems to happen every year) but we are looking at what, 2 quality non-con opponents* IF we get Bama in that tournament? Definitely a lean schedule compared to previous seasons.

*not counting Kentucky until they show they are decent

Sep 16, 2021 03:50 PM #4

Goes to show, KU typically plays a bunch of games against good comp.

Sep 16, 2021 04:19 PM #5

I really like the softer schedule in non-con. You still have Michigan St, likely Alabama, Kentucky @ Colorado. I think some years they have scheduled too hard compared to competition. The schedule is the least of our worries. We always find a way to go into the tournament missing key pieces or being less then 100%. I do find the grouping of road games in league play to be an outcome of Covid.

Sep 16, 2021 06:06 PM #6

I do like most of the difficult games KU has in the non conference are neutral court or road games. UNT, SFA, and Harvard are all quality low major teams that KU would likely see in a 1st round type of game.

Sep 16, 2021 06:17 PM #7

I for one enjoy our brutal noncon every year and it makes the whole season feel like the post season, with bragging rights and plenty of discussion spawned throughout, but a soft year has it perks too.

i Agree with you I enjoy the more difficult games. When you play a quote unquote cream puff teams what are you gaining - -you need quality teams that you compete with , just don't really think you gain anything by playing a lot of lesser teams -well maybe then gain some experience for Bench

Sep 17, 2021 03:09 AM #9

I like a tough non-conf schedule except not liking it for the first couple games. Let us get some court time to at least work out a couple of bugs.

Sep 17, 2021 09:25 AM #10

@drgnslayr

And there's only 1 exhibition game this year again

All teams have that same problem Dragon - - even other tough hard teams have those same problems - shouldn't be any harder on us then them when it comes to working out those bugs

KU announced today that Run-DMC will be performing at Late Night this year.

I have no idea. I read off the TOS had some posters saying recruits won't even know who these guys are. - just being negative - for me I don't have any idea who they are to old lol

I am too old and too uninterested!

Sep 18, 2021 01:18 PM #20

I'm betting Adidas had something to do with Run-DMC being chosen this year since Run-DMC are even more associated with Adidas than KU is. An Adidas tracksuit and a pair of Superstars are their signature look and they have multiple songs from the 80's about Adidas. I'm pretty sure Run-DMC is a significant reason why Adidas is as big as they are today.

Sep 18, 2021 02:49 PM #21

@Texas-Hawk-10

Bingo!

Sep 18, 2021 02:51 PM #22

@jayballer67

I hear you and agree... I just think it is better basketball if all the bluebloods get a few games in first. Maybe I'm wrong. These kids have already played so many big games by the time they hit college.

I disagree. I love the way KU's schedule is set up this year. Michigan St. will reveal where KU still needs work and will have more impact than Self saying it in practice over and over again. The next part of the schedule is pretty soft which will give KU a chance to work on the things MSU exposes. Then the non-confernce starts picking back up and KU can see exactly how much progress they've made against quality teams mostly away from AFH.

Love the kings of rock. Gonna be fun to be back in a packed AFH

I hope they require proof of vaccination and masks! I also like what the Raiders did. Require either proof of vaccination or if you show up without being vaccinated and want in, you get escorted right to the the vaccination station in the stadium

@Texas-Hawk-10

I was speaking in generalities. At least we get one warmup this year before MSU.

Last year... Gonzaga first seemed a bit rich for me to start the season.

Sep 21, 2021 07:11 PM #30

I'm down with Covid... at the end of it now. So I've been vaxed and sick. I should be safe! hahahaaaa At least for a few months until the next variant.

I'm hiring a new service... Uberpeople... and I will have someone attend Late Night for me with vidcams strapped on, sending me a live feed.

@drgnslayr oof, glad you're on the mend.

Boot Camp has finished

Sep 22, 2021 05:34 PM #33

Any good Bill quotes about who looks good? Has historically been the kiss of death.

Sep 22, 2021 05:58 PM #34

@Kcmatt7 Yeah bootcamp doesn't mean much. Will be more interesting when practices start.

It does seem like Cam has won the back-up 5 spot though.

Sep 22, 2021 06:06 PM #35

So Bill said a few things.

First Remy Martin is dealing with a left ankle sprain. Hopes he will be 100% in a week or so.

Kyle Cuffe had arthroscopic knee surgery. Out a few weeks.

KU will play Tulsa in Tulsa in a closed scrimmage as substitute for a 2nd exhibition game.

Sep 22, 2021 06:51 PM #37

Sounds like Self might be developing a man crush on Bobby. Will be interesting to see if he swipes some minutes this year.

Which, you know, makes total sense because his HS footage screamed Bill Self player.

But, are we going to be good this year (regional final good)?

So many new pieces to the puzzle... I just don't know whether to be excited or temper my expectations this year.

This team only reaching the Elite 8 would be a failure. This is a team that has national championship level talent, depth, and experience.

Just about everyone who is going to be in the rotation is in at least their 3rd season of college basketball. There will be 3 seniors starting including at PG. The biggest issue KU had last season was scoring. Remy Martin fixes that problem because Remy might be the best scorer in college basketball. This won't be an elite shooting team, but they can shoot well enough and defense should be improved over last season as well.

Sep 24, 2021 01:38 PM #42

@bskeet

Hard to tell. It's a talented roster with more depth so the potential is there. On paper its a good looking team but as always the biggest issue this team faces every year is staying healthy particularly its big men.

Getting Remy Martin via transfer & getting Agbaji & Wilson back certainly raised the ceiling significantly.

Martin is a very good College Player and might be the best returning scoring guard in the country. Agbaji averaged 14 a game, probably his ceiling but with Dave you have 3 legitimate go-to options. You could say KU has 4 if you add in a more consistent Jalen Wilson to the equation. The wildcard I'm so interested in seeing is how good Yesufu is, the transfer from Drake. He was dynamic in the NCAA tournament and really could be that 5th guy that makes KU very difficult to guard night in and night out

Sep 24, 2021 02:08 PM #43

Lots of new faces yes, but also returning 4 starters which is huge historically under Self.

This is a key, Dave will need to stay healthy. This team has a lot of guard depth, post depth is um, interesting. Sounds like Cam is going to end up the back-up 5.

Keeping Remy & Dave healthy is the biggest worry I have. Post depth behind Dave is not good. Cam is unproven at this level & you have freshman and Mitch after that. Hopefully Cam can be serviceable enough.

Hopefully the guard play is the biggest difference this year. There are no shortage of options

Sep 24, 2021 03:02 PM #46

@BeddieKU23 statistically Remy and Yesufu are better than what we had last year. Make the pick and roll great again.

@BeddieKU23 said in SCHEDULE OUT:

I think he can be an added bonus on offense because he will definitely stretch the floor... more so than anyone we have had at the post in a long while.

The question is defense and rebounding. I suspect a drop-off in these areas... so we take on a + with a -. I would think some times it is an overall plus for us, other times negative. It will be reliant on match-ups and who is hot, who is not.

But really, who knows, until he gets on the floor.

Sep 24, 2021 11:26 PM #48

@drgnslayr

Clemence and Cam are definitely the type of stretch bigs we haven't seen much of in the Self Era.
