Would be nice to see full effort today from the Hawks. If so, we good.
Iona shoots 30% from 3 so I'm sure they will be on fire today.
Same starters meh

Let's go #Jayhawks
❤💙
Does Ochai always jump to start the game, instead of Dave? I think I've missed most tip-offs this year.
@tundrahok never
Ochai
Big dave
Maybe that will help him get going early.
Dipsy Doo baby
Sweet
Who is coming off bench 1st?
Mitch
Pettiford came in for Harris
Hitting boards better too!
@tundrahok he creates plays. Harris tries to make one.
We are making shots today, a welcome change.
So far so good
Wilson see the bench and stay
David would have bounced ball before going straight up like Mitch
Och needs to board
Pathetic Jalen didn't even try to stop that guy from getting position
Nice Yes
@BeddieKU23 and those ugly shoes
Nice joseph
Wow Bobby
What a lowkey Self-Pitino matchup this is
Need some D
Announcer is not good at singing

Bobby with some nice minutes today.
Nice to have week off for #Chiefs

Hip looks better he could barely move laterally against UNT.
JWill against isn't do much, bad body language. Pretty off of playing him if he is going to be this awful.
Nice Juan
Free throws 🤦♀️
How does he miss that so bad lol? I'm not even mad I just want to understand
Love the effort
David took it to ❤ all the criticism
I'm about ready to just see Remy, Ochai, and Braun shoot 20 times a game. Or play the young guys a lot.
Has Zach or KJ played yet?
@KirkIsMyHinrich no on either
Bill needs to play those guys.
Pretty sure Bill had their full attention after that loss. Good effort today (aside from Jalen).

Much faster pace for us

Agree. I want our young guys to play more as well
That's just bad offense
Officiating is not as manipulative so far.
I know. I’m sour grapes about yesterday’s game. From the clock discrepancy to the no calls and crappy calls, I’m tired of the officials orchestrating games to be close.
Dave messes up the simplest plays
Christian Braun is our best player
Dave just isn't very good at basketball. He's not skilled. It is what it is. He tries hard
Refs making up🤭🤭🤭
Well. At least we're winning by 18 today.
Maybe Pitino should try to press? lol
Agree Braun is great but still think Agbaji is best. Remy appears to have been most valuable addition.
CB absolutely cooking
Sonic has the worst commercials. It's like their goal is to try to be annoying.
CB this tournament has shown a lot of good things especially the ballhandling and finishing in the lane
@bskeet said in Iona Game Thread:

It's definitely Remy or Ochai, but Braun has played well lately.
CB/Och/Remy those are the guys.
Braun is having the best game today. Ochai is best for the season.
Here’s the press @KirkIsMyHinrich
Stop fouling
Jalen with a good stroke is just as bad at the line as Doke
JWill's body language is turrible
Ochai had a hot start to the season and it's kind of led to him taking stupid shots. His shot selection needs to be better.
Wiggins had the same problem for a long time.
Bullcrap play once again
How can you let them go on a 12-2 run like nothing???
Speaking of Wiggins
Nice pass from CB btw
Wow agbaji
Got to keep it up!!!
Self’s teams seem to lack a killer instinct. Not sure why. When we got up 20 should have totally put the foot on the throat and snuffed out any hope.

I realize it’s hard to keep the intensity for 40 minutes and there’s a natural tendency to let up when you get a substantial lead.
I just don’t know Bill’s psyche enough to know if he just doesn’t like embarrassing other coaches or if he likes in-game psy-ops with his own players to build toughness or if we just can’t turn it on again once we turn it off. Any way you look at it costs us a fee games every year and often at the most inopportune time.
@KirkIsMyHinrich said in Iona Game Thread:
@tis4tim Sometimes I think we forget to compete. Like we’re just going through the motions, doing things that would work in practice, but we forget to actually play.
That’s what I see too. It’s early and we’re a work in progress and every team is different. Yet, lack of a killer instinct seems to be a universal theme with Self. 2008 might be an exception.
Now finish this game, good effort this half please.
No surprise
No awareness of the court
Came out looking pretty flat...sigh... Literally the same thing as Friday, hopefully not for 15 minutes this time....
Legs shouldn't be a factor. Pace needs to quicken
Eerily reminiscent of the Dayton game. Big 1st half lead - 18 this time - and quickly down to 10...
Jeezuz Dave....
Same shit every game from dave
Dave is bad, woof
Good defense, Braun
This feels like a repeat of Friday with KU coming out flat to start the second half.
Remy's shot is so flat but it goes in
God it's like hot potato
Why can't we make lay-ups? lol
Does anyone keep track of shooting % at the rim. We are probably 300th in the nation...
What is with ochai today
Nice pass by Remy there
@BShark said in Iona Game Thread:

He's shooting 41.7% from the field this season, which obviously is not great for a big man.
Och back down to earth these last couple games...
About to be in another dogfight ugh
@BShark said in Iona Game Thread:

Hope he doesn't decline as we go forward like last year
Och needs to box out too
At this point, we should just use Dave to set screens around the FT line and follow-up on drives. Forget about posting him.
We should give his minutes to Clemence and KJ. Those players can potentially get a lot better.
Mitch is second leading scorer right now...
@DCHawker said in Iona Game Thread:

Mitch has looked alright this season. Like a great value Nick Collison
I think Mitch can do all the things we expect from Dave. Rim runner that rebounds, plays positional defense and doesn’t cough up the ball or play plodding back to the basket offense, passes willingly.
Terrible officiating is back
Agbaji's shot selection needs to be better or he needs to attack and get to the line. He can't play soft and take dumb shots.
Looks like Agbaji’s mechanics have reverted to old Agbaji again.
So yes. I’d like Zach and KJ to get minutes but in this team Mitch might be pretty valuable
That was an awful break...
Hope KJ stays in
Nice d from jaun
D Juan harris

Mitch has been around forever and knows what is expected of him and how to function in the offense. Generally doesn't try to do more than he is capable of...
Mitch is currently our best big. Hopefully not the case by the end of the season.
Jalen, you're going to have to make free-throws if you ever want to play in the NBA.
Jalen got fouled. Come on
CB so much more confident
KJ
Didn't look like much of a foul on KJ
Wow
Nice pass, Bobby P
KJ likes short shorts 👏
Yes, yes
@RockChalkinTexas looks like a fb player
Now we see why KJ doesn't play more. Was surprised he made those fts.
@Crimsonorblue22 looks awkward with a small body from the waist down but 6' of upper body
I'm unpleasantly surprised by Wilson's slow start. He's getting a lot of minutes and not scoring much

Yes needs more minutes

Lol teahan made the shooting with a bow and arrow motion and released with the front hand

I honestly thought he’d be getting 15 mpg
Maybe more
Trying to decide what the minutes distribution should be on this team. There is a place for Harris. Agbaji,Wilson, Martin, and Braun all have to play big minutes, particularly in tight games. There's a place for McCormack and Lightfoot.
The struggle is that I like Pettiford. Yesufu needs minutes. Coleman-Lands has a skillset that should get him on the floor. Adams and Clements both bring energy in defined roles. There are a lot of programs where this group would be starting. Here, it's a challenge to find them minutes. But they all deserve minutes.
Why can't we just put away this team
@BeddieKU23 Golden State warriors the last few possessions apparently

Iona absolutely heating up with Dave in. Shocker.
Bad foul Dave
@stoptheflop it's how he played at the end of last year
And one
Good pass, JCL
I like Dave as the distributor near top of key then rim running for board. That’s exactly a role that works
According to the announcer we turned down Remy out of HS. :writing_hand:
There is no way Bill and Remy survive a 4 year relationship though.

23 more shots, 16 more rebounds and half the turnovers. How are we only up 15???
Throw jalen in there and maybe big dave
Be interesting to see if Dayton plays half as hard today as they didn't against us.

They are shooting like Steph this half. From 3... 30% on the year 22% in this yournament, 47% today.
Dave looks like his old self at the FT line. Way to go
Hands, body control, unnecessary movement/flailing. We know what Dave struggles at, he just doesn't seem to be able to correct it.
ffs
It’s a travel if it’s not a jump, dude
Rick Pitino is still a douche bag. Shocker
Dunk it
Yeah Remy can’t defend
Iona now 50% (11-22) from 3.
Sure Iona
Ochai is taller than Dave with their respective hair
@approxinfinity maybe dave's hair is wound too tight
@RockChalkinTexas ha good one
Better than a loss. I liked KJ today.
Decent. Left with a w
Nice inside game today. Kept the turnovers to single digits too.
Yesufu making a pretty good argument for more playing time.
A win is Good for the plane ride home 🤭

❤💙
I don’t know what you can do about Remy not being good on the defensive end, other than out score teams with him on the floor
Who is sticking around for the dayton game??
What are we ranked Monday?
7th or 8th?
Yeah I was assuming 7th, but it was a bad loss and Iona wasn’t a good win (yet) so maybe lower
Back to NYC next Friday for St. John's.
RCJH !
Taking a break to start dinner
It takes me until January to get over an early season loss. Jeez, a couple more FTs was all it would have taken.
Mitch took more shots than Remy.
@approxinfinity Iona did beat Alabama
@RockChalkinTexas I don't think they'll be that happy
Coach Self is NOT happy. Talking about how our defense is trash baasically. - He brought up one time where one of the guys flopped acting to ty to get charge - -we ALL know he was talking about there ( Remy ) - -which in turn the guy knocked down the 3. - -Got to get Alot better defensively
@approxinfinity said in Iona Game Thread:

Purdue will be # 1. - Both UCLA & Gonzaga lost - Purdue was 3rd. I to am thinking probably 7-8 th for us

They was talking about other teams going at Remy - posting him up , not the biggest guard in the world - on top not very good defensively

Yeah - they gave up 52 points to Iona in the 2nd half. The Gaels shot something like 60% in the 2nd half. Also got to the FT frequently by attacking the basket.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why 20 year olds can't play with intensity for 40 minutes - actually more like 15-30 with the depth on this roster. Huggy can get his guys to do it...
@DCHawker said in Iona Game Thread:
Huggy can get his guys to do it
How has that worked out for him in the long run, compared to say, HCBS (whom your comment implies cannot do it)?
I'm not sure why people are surprised this team still isn't that good defensively this season. 4 of 5 starters from last year are back from a bad defensive and Remy Martin who is an average defender on his best day replaced a DPOY in Marcus Garrett.
This isn't a team that's going to win many games because of defense this season. This is a team that will have to outscore teams on most nights. This is why Self is trying to get Dave going because we know he can be a reliable scorer and give zero KU a fourth guy capable of getting 15 a night. Self does also need to let Remy be Remy because his scoring and driving ability is what can really open up the offense for everyone else.
Agree this will be a below average defensive team all year.
Well, a win’s a win I guess. Should have been a 30pt win, but I’ll take it.
I’m thinking the weird rotations and floor combinations were to blame today for some of the lapses.
I noticed one odd lineup when we lost some ground.
Is Self just trying guys out before he gets stingy with minutes?
On the surface, I’m not minding any of the guys on the floor, but maybe not have wholesale changes at once? I dunno.
(I still love KJ!)

In no way am I implying that Huggins is a better coach than Self. The records speak for themselves. Just that some on the thread have passed off the defensive lapses and letting lesser teams stay close in games that should be easy wins by saying that it is too difficult to maintain intensity for the entire games. If you have a very short bench and guys have to play 35 minutes or more, then you would expect some pacing. But, if you have a deep bench and trust those guys to perform for 10-15 minutes, then the starters should be able to go hard for 25-30 and not take plays off. That's all...
The defense is bad right now. But Self went on to blame himself for messing around with lineups and creating out of rhythm situations. Still its totally an effort thing as a group.
Self mentioned post game he needs to do a better job subbing and I think we could all agree that the lineups have lacked rhyme or reason. We all want to see the newcomers but it seems clear certain guys have to be on the floor a majority of the time.
@BeddieKU23 said in Iona Game Thread:

Bit of both for sure. Like @Texas-Hawk-10 said the pieces just aren't very good for defense either. This will be a team that wins on offense.

Oh yeah that's a really good point as well. We just lack the horses on defense collectively.
I'm okay with this being a Top 5 offense all year especially after last years debacle on that end.
We know Bill is gonna Bill when it comes to preaching D but his ticket to a good season is getting the 7-9 guys dialed in on offense and hoping the success on that end translates to better effort on D. And that kind of fits the mentality of a lot of our guys. Agbaji, CB, Remy, Dave all play better when they score.
@approxinfinity said in Iona Game Thread:

Was late watching the game but this comment stood out to me looking through the game thread. To me, Mitch scores the points that Bill draws up. He is in the right spots, makes the right cuts, and finishes when the play call gives him the free look at the basket. Like the box score might as well give all those points to Bill. And I think that makes Bill happy. He's not going to do a lot of scoring outside of those sets. I think he had one bucket where he actually made a move and then scored. But he also doesn't TRY to make a move and score every time. I mean, dude got to double digits in back up minutes just by knowing the system. I wish others would see that and learn from it. Bill can make the game so easy for big guys but some of them seem to make it so hard.
Could definitely hear Self early in the second half say "get him out of there" after watching Dave fail to grab 3-4 rebounds in a row that went right to him. Hard to say what to do about that. Hard to say how to help a guy make easy layups when the set lays them out on a platter. Hard to say what to do about Dave in general. He showed at the end of the year last year he can be an impact player. But hard to say how long you give him to get back to that level this year.
I still think we can play better D! A lot of our O came off of steals, fast breaks. No matter how big Dave kills me, we need him to get back to where he was. He was an 80% plus FT shooter last yr. I think it's all mental. It's certainly not for lack of effort. Not sure about jalen? Off court problems, nba concerns? Hopefully rust. Not me ball!
They'll get the D sorted out. Always feels like Bill needs to see how best to pull those strings and by conference play we're elite defensively. We are a Kenpom top 5 offense even while playing Harris 27 mpg. Last year's defense finished 12th on Kenpom and we returned almost everyone and have a better bench. Bill will get that sorted out.
Honestly we've only played shitty in the 2nd half of two games. Otherwise this team has been as advertised. Once Bill sprinkles his magic fairy dust on the defense I think we will start to see some impressive wins. I'm definitely a little sour from this tournament, but overall we are still a top 5 team.
