My guess is that Turgeon's next stop will be an assistant job somewhere. Good luck to him and Danny.

IMO, Manning was set up to fail at Wake...in spite of that, he managed to beat both Duke and UNC within a two-week span his final season. Taking over a mediocre Big 10 team looks like a more manageable situation for him than a moribund ACC program.

Not sure how good his recruiting skills are, but at least now he has access to recruits in the D.C. area...if the AD gives him a shot at the job full time.

@nwhawkfan good points all around, fingers crossed for Danny.

Extremely odd to leave in the middle of the season.

@AsadZ said in Turg out, Danny named interim at UMd:

You don't see it often but you also don't see situations like this where a guy is still a coach but with basically 0% fan approval. He tried to leave last offseason, I believe he was in the running for the Marquette job.

I said this before but I think Maryland fans overrate their programs. Turg won at a 66% rate. I will be surprised if the next coach does better and I'm not even that high on Turg.

@nwhawkfan Danny does not like recruiting, or at least didn't when he was an assistant at KU. Doubt much has changed there. I would imagine he would want to hire some strong recruiters as assistants and mostly leave that to them.

Maryland is an Under Armor school -- The Under Armor school (the founder is a Terrapin). Danny should be able to get some recruiting support.

I think Danny has been assigned on an interim basis. He may get the job eventually but AD appears to be doing a national search.

Danny is not getting this job. I doubt he is even a serious candidate.

Danny just hired as an assistant at Louisville.

Saw that and it took me back to 1986 and the Denny Crum led Cardinals.. Nervous Pervous Ellison... IIRC, we beat them in the regular season (I think it was at home) and then, had we gotten past Duke, we would have played them for the NC. I think we'd have won that game. That 86 team was a powerhouse. One of the top 10 stacked teams at KU. Danny was a sophomore and spectacular and Turgeon was a senior, if memory serves.

@bskeet We beat Louisville twice that season! You can look it up and if the refs hadn't whistled 26 fouls against us against Duke, and only 14 against them we might have played them a 3rd time.

@wissox Oh yeah! That's right.. 2x.

We also lost Archie in that game vs Duke. Our tournament history is littered with bad breaks.
