I love that pick n roll lob/dunk by Dave and Harris to start the second half. That's the iconic play of the game, IMO.

I'm under the Weaver's Awning in that Mass Street shot.

I notice that they are holding up 2 fingers, yet in the group picture on the plane, they're holding up 1 finger. Hmm. Are Braun and Juando trying to tell us something?

Apr 13, 2022 11:49 AM #30

@bskeet With apologies to the opinion that the alley oop was the play of the game, I thought this one was to be honest.

Seeing the Jalen Wilson pic reminds me of a chart I saw on twitter of KU dunks this season. JWill had 1 dunk all season. Strange. Apparently our dunks were much higher in number than in past years.

Apr 13, 2022 11:58 AM #31

@wissox

124 Dunks on the year, almost triple the amount in the previous year. 2018 team has the most (214) fueld mostly by Doke

Apr 13, 2022 12:02 PM #32

JWill is close to a non-athlete at this level. For a normal person he is pretty athletic of course. It's the main thing that prevented him from being drafted.

Apr 13, 2022 02:43 PM #33

Kansas finished this season with 124 dunks. Here is the breakdown by player:

Ochai, 37
David, 32 # of missed dunks ????
Christian, 27
Mitch, 15
KJ, 7
Juan, 3
Jalen, 1
Remy, 1
Joe, 1

Apr 13, 2022 02:45 PM #34

@wissox

In 2018 Doke had 2 less dunks then this squad had as a team. :face_screaming_in_fear:

Apr 13, 2022 03:06 PM #35

@BeddieKU23 Wow!

Apr 13, 2022 03:07 PM #36

@BeddieKU23 LaGerald Vick was one of my favorite dunkers from that era. Really amazing high flyer.

Apr 13, 2022 03:14 PM #37

@wissox

I still shake my head at how his career here ended. He was a heck of a player when locked in

Apr 13, 2022 03:28 PM #38

That Remy block was incredible. I finally watched the game again over the weekend and I'd swear Remy jumped even before Caleb Love went up for the shot like he fully anticipated when Love was going to make his move. His prescient timing was a thing of beauty and a key play in securing the victory.

Apr 13, 2022 03:54 PM #39

@tis4tim Funny thing is I looked at the picture @bskeet placed in this post of the block and just assumed it was Dave blocking someone early in the game. Then I looked again and thought wow, that's Remy. I think the refs did a good job showing restraint and not whistling it there. Not saying at all that he fouled him but I'm sure Michigan fans still have nightmares of Burke blocking a fast break for Louisville in the waning minutes and getting whistled for it. That's when I turned that game off as I figured Michigan had no chance if they were going to favor sleazy Rick Patino over classy John Beilein.

When the game was being decided in the last 3 minutes, I keep going back to Remy's block as the most critical play. Championship Remy as I will always think about him was a blur making the block. Our players still had defensive energy during those 3 minutes, while NC players were exhausted and were realizing they couldn't finish with the win.

You could always go back to Dave's jump hook that he missed and just out fought Manek & Bacot for the rebound and made THE HUGE basket LATE IN the game with like a minute to go

Texas Southern and Creighton. Texas Tech fans think they could have beaten us in the tourney whilst chalking up losses they didnt even play, haha.

After watching that highlight video, I kind of want to go back and watch every game of the season again. Even the bad games. There really was something special about the way that team eventually clicked once the 7 main guys got locked in. You could feel it build in the B12 tourney. Tons of experience and trust the way those lobs were tossed up. Just beautiful. What a year!

Apr 20, 2022 01:20 AM #69

@DanR still seems to be a dream! That tough last week of our season, just losing to a very good tcu. Losing to Dayton and Kentucky. Beating isu without Och. Texas beating the crap out of us, physically, especially BD. Revenge was great. Snacks handshake. TT loss. Baylor beating us and then beating the crap out of them! Felt sooo good! Those teams did pretty good in the tourney. Can't imagine another team like this one. It would be fun to watch again and do it together! Redo! Magical year! Best kids and staff!

Apr 20, 2022 01:39 AM #70

@Crimsonorblue22 - AND… currently on an 11 game winning streak!

Apr 20, 2022 02:29 AM #71

Interesting to think about Baylor and how good they still were this year. They lost to the national runner-up UNC in OT. Obviously, that game could have gone either way.. and if it went the other way, they could have matched up in an all B12 Final. That's pretty impressive.

(Also, the way Baylor stormed back on UNC foreshadowed our epic comeback.)

Apr 20, 2022 02:34 AM #72

Lol, maniac couldn't get out of the big 12! Got thrown out of that game, got some elbows during our game cause of his own doing! Wonder if he's done?

Apr 20, 2022 02:53 AM #73

Yeah, reminds me of two more 'fortuitous' aspects of our run that are easy to overlook:

1) We played Thursday / Saturday and then got the extra day rest when we needed it most for the regional semis on Friday / Saturday. It really helped Mitch, but Dave also benefitted. That one day was huge.

2) When we needed to comeback, we happened to face a guy that we had extensive knowledge. For Miami, it was Charlie Moore, and we turned him over several times to start the second half. For UNC, it was Manek. Dave and Mitch had faced Manek many times before. They knew they could post up against him. And when all the marbles were up for grabs, Dave had confidence that he could take on Manek.

Another forgotten highlight was the KState game in the rotten apple when we were down 16 at halftime. :astonished_face: :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

One of the examples I used with my Championship watching group why it wasn't over by any stretch against NC.

Apr 21, 2022 04:37 AM #77

@DanR this was the day after Selfs dad died, or the day. The team pulled thru for him.

Apr 21, 2022 04:47 AM #78

The K-State game really made me a believer as well. I nearly turned off the radio in the first half..but I figured I'd stick with them just to see how they responded. And in the second half they still made me want to turn off the radio at times.. but slowly they cut the lead, but could never actually pull ahead until the very end of the game. I'm pretty sure KU had the lead less than 60 seconds of the game.

lol, thanks for reminding me almost forgot that, but I guess even the sun has to shine on a dogs ass sometime huh lol. - -Ya again who knows maybe THAT was the point in the Season where these guys took that approach and didn't really panic if they got down. what ever the case this game turned out to be pivotal for us I think. @bskeet These images tell the story of the what this KU team could do.

At the end of the win probability chart, what you see is a spike that pierces through the heart of EMAW.
