Do we have 2 bigs that are P-5 quality starting Bigs ? - possibly Zach & Udeh - - Zach & Zuby that's mine lol if we go that route - got a feel about Zuby might surprisw

Believe the starting line-up will be Dajuan, Kevin, Jalen, KJ, Udeh.

Nov 03, 2022 09:20 PM #5

@BShark I like the defense but the spacing on offense might be rough

Nov 03, 2022 09:21 PM #6

@KirkIsMyHinrich Yeah lol. I tweeted about this and Dajuan liked my tweet. I've made it.

Nov 03, 2022 09:22 PM #7

Did you tell him you're awesome at wizard chess?

Nov 03, 2022 09:24 PM #8

I would think if Udeh doesn't start it will be Zach. Sounds like KJ has made big strides, something to monitor.

Wow, Gradey didn't crack the starting line up? Wow.

Nov 03, 2022 09:35 PM #10

@stoptheflop Nothing official yet to be clear. Hearings :trade_mark:

Nov 03, 2022 09:45 PM #11

@BShark My prediction that Zach would start is just a guess based on HC's previous teams. Coach likes a big man at the 5 and Zach fits that description. But just that's just my guess and we'll know very soon.

Nov 03, 2022 09:58 PM #12

So you include KJ as a big. KU lists him as 6'7". How tall to you think he really is?

Nov 03, 2022 10:01 PM #13

@stoptheflop Somewhere around there maybe 6'6'' Draymond/Vital type role.

KJ has made strides in what aspect of his game?

Nov 03, 2022 10:10 PM #16

@FarmerJayhawk Can't trust Bill I'm afraid. KJ starting either way though, not sure how it makes me feel.

Nov 03, 2022 10:15 PM #17

@BShark at very least someone in the SID’s office has a sense of humor. I can’t bring myself to feel anything about the starting lineup for Pitt State

Nov 03, 2022 10:15 PM #18

MJ Rice not going through warm-ups per Swain.

Nov 03, 2022 10:24 PM #19

@BShark someone let me know why when they find out. Going to the game so I won’t be able to surf the Twitter

Thanks for passing along the game notes. Looking forward to the matchup with the Fighting Boschees !

Noticed In Quick Facts (pg. 3) that it says KU's first season was 1888-89...which is a pretty neat trick considering that Naismith didn't invent the game until 1891 !

Wayback machine is right. Echoes of the Ted Owens days when he ran a double-post offense with Danny Knight & Rick Suttle in the mid-'70s. Got us to a Final Four.

Nov 03, 2022 11:07 PM #29

This should give usa chance to get some early practice defending the 3. - - Boschee said they are a team that wants to put up alot of three. - -work on that tree defense

Nov 03, 2022 11:08 PM #30

Probably starting the 5 guys who worked the hardest in practice

Nov 03, 2022 11:16 PM #31

shooting looks good

Nov 03, 2022 11:19 PM #32

Getting cooked by Pitt St is not something I expected

Nov 03, 2022 11:20 PM #33

Umm...wake up guys !

Nov 03, 2022 11:20 PM #34

Fun start

Nov 03, 2022 11:22 PM #35

BShark's fault as all bad things are

Nov 03, 2022 11:22 PM #36

Boschee looks great. Can't say the same for the defending champs.

Nov 03, 2022 11:22 PM #37

Nov 03, 2022 11:23 PM #38

Nov 03, 2022 11:40 PM #46

Nov 03, 2022 11:54 PM #76

Nov 04, 2022 12:03 AM #85

McCullar is our best low post player

Nov 04, 2022 12:03 AM #86

Don't mind a five-point halftime lead. How we got there is another story.

Nov 04, 2022 12:04 AM #87

liked that post up by McCuller... someone mentioned in a thread a while back that could be a killer strategy

Nov 04, 2022 12:04 AM #88

Give me a lineup of Juan, McCullar, Dick, Jalen and the best player from Buckets based on what I saw in the first half

Nov 04, 2022 12:11 AM #96

Boschee has been a winning coach up until the past two seasons (covid talent depletion). Maybe he just likes hanging out in Eastern KS, but it seems like he could score a bigger coaching gig

Nov 04, 2022 12:12 AM #97

That start is as bad as I have ever seen KU. That 5 just does not work, especially at this point. Overall bigs are very lost and we will be a lot better once they know how to run the offense.

There was some really bad 3 point shooting by our guys. Cuffe, Adams, Yesufu. Didn't look like they practiced 3s at all. FTs either.

Nov 04, 2022 12:18 AM #101

Bigs aren't cutting either

Nov 04, 2022 12:19 AM #102

Nov 04, 2022 12:21 AM #103

These 5 are the starters many predicted. Adams at the 5.

Nov 04, 2022 12:21 AM #104

No matter how inept you are as a big man at KU, if you can set a decent screen and cut to the basket you will play a lot.

Jalen

Nov 04, 2022 12:33 AM #131

I absolutely hated Kevin McCullar when we played Tech but he's been tough on defense.
My guy KJ has grown some and looks even more muscular.

Nov 04, 2022 12:34 AM #132

@KirkIsMyHinrich went to the KU basketball camp as a kiddo when Jeff was a counselor. Dude just did not miss a shot. Was mind blowing to 10 year old me

Nov 04, 2022 12:35 AM #133

@FarmerJayhawk I went to one as well, but my mind was blown by Danny Manning dunking

Nov 04, 2022 12:35 AM #134

Dick is the man and better start every game from here on out

Jalen and Mccullar will be solid

Bobby is a great backup pg

5 spot needs to be Clemence and Zuby but Bills gonna be pushing kj and udeh for some reason

Juan is doing nothing Self claimed and looks bad offensively. Not even looking to shoot or score even when we were down 21-6

We need a dog like MJ to pair with Dick so Juan can feed them all game. Hearing he’s in the dog house which is typical. Bill favoring less athletic guys than taking the studs and making the team great

@BShark screening sure anything else nah

Zuby got in and gave us a spark. What did you not like about his play?

He’s better than kj right now

Nov 04, 2022 12:40 AM #144

Besides this game is an audition.

Nov 04, 2022 12:40 AM #145

@kuballin10 MJ has to learn how to play defense and play within a structure. He was Mr. Jack Up Whatever in high school and isn’t a great shooter. He’ll take some time to get going, but Bill did say he’ll be a different guy in February than November. He knows a thing or two about getting the best out of guys

@BShark fair enough

My bill self pet is Zuby

Dude went up against Lively (duke’s guy) and had 20 points and 20 boards - this I read on the other board I think have not verified

I know he routinely had 20 boards a night in high school dude is a freak with mid range game and with the 5 spot this bad get him a ton of play

Nov 04, 2022 12:45 AM #159

I hope Pettiford plays a lot this season

Nov 04, 2022 12:45 AM #160

Nov 04, 2022 12:49 AM #171

@kuballin10 Problem is Udeh and Zuby are both confused on offense. It will come in time though I have faith in the kids and the staff.

Udeh's high school in particular didn't even really run offense. They let their guards jack up shots and everything he got was off rebounds. So this is quite the adjustment for him.

Nov 04, 2022 12:50 AM #172

Oooo that’s nice

Nov 04, 2022 12:50 AM #173

Wow that was nice!

Nov 04, 2022 12:50 AM #174

Udeh needs to learn to set screens for that reason alone

Nov 04, 2022 12:51 AM #175

So the physical tools are certainly there with him

Nov 04, 2022 12:51 AM #176

Who dey? Udeh!

Nov 04, 2022 12:51 AM #177

@KirkIsMyHinrich exactly. He’s really only a rim runner and lob guy now

Nov 04, 2022 12:51 AM #178

Let's give Udeh as many minutes as possible early in the season.

Nov 04, 2022 12:52 AM #179

@BShark he tried to make a post move lol

Agreed Udeh is the rim runner I screamed about when Dave was here these past few years (watching Baylor do it said we need to)

Go 4 guards who can score around a 6-11 rim runner and go win a lot of games

Well guys things I learned from this 1st contest.- -1: -- Our DEFENSE is going to help us -- - A LOT this season. - - Yes I know it's Pitt State but 27 turnovers - - KU with 17 Steals. Ended up hitting 40 % from the three.

2.nd :- -I think we found out probably Grady Dick looks like the real deal - -complete player , looked pretty dam calm -- smooth.

3rd: - Our 5 spot, to me if we are looking for more of scoring option -I think Zach is our guy - -he just looks so much more fluid. KJ good ball game - -gonna take some time for our other two, BUT like I said if were going to ty and get more out of our five - - think has to be Zach.

Other players looking decent , thought Bobby played a really solid game - - Kevin did well. We might take some lumps early , gonna take a little time , but think we gonna be ok.

Juando did up his offensive game- he took 6 shots tonite. I thought he could've penetrated the defense more, but can't argue about 10 assists.

Jalen missed a few layups. 9 for 17 is acceptable, though.

Screw off with your "Ass-tros" shit. Every team had a sign stealing system in place. Carlos Beltran is the one who told the Astros about the Yankess system and why the Astros developed their own season. Also doesn't change that the Astros had a better road than home record in 2017 and won that World Series in Dodger Stadium. Keep on hating and the Astros are just gonna keep on winning.

Back to the game where we all can agree who are the good guys... Some takeaways:

Jalen Wilson: the only thing holding him back from being pretty awesome almost every night is his head / mindset.

Grady Dick: looks like a scorer. Good now. Should be very good by Feb. I expect him to start henceforth.

Kevin: Really solid and will save our bacon in several games this year. He will become our most reliable player by January.

Juan: Pretty much where he left off last year. Would have liked him to find at least one 3. Its something he should have worked on during the offseason.

KJ: Bouncy and athletic as ever. Should be much improved by conference. If not, someone else will need to take his place as a starter.

Bobby: I can see him becoming a force.

This team looks like it is at it's best when it's pushing the pace and is able to take advantage of its athleticism. This means it's fragile and vulnerable to teams that are disciplined and know how to slow the pace (and shoot the 3). McCullar is the only guy that looked like he could be depended on to produce in that kind of match up.

PS: Jeff Bochee: Looked great and had his team ready. Seeing him on the court (even with all that hair) brought back some fond memories.

Nov 04, 2022 04:52 AM #277

@bskeet I'm sure Juan did, 10 assists and 6 pts isn't to shabby.

Nov 04, 2022 06:00 AM #278

Whoooaaa doggie!

Gradey’s got a smoooottth stroke! Wow.

It was our first game, and an exhibition, so not sure how much we can read into things.

I do have the same concern I’ve had since the summer…3 pt shooting. Gonna need some more. Once teams scout Grady and shove him off the line as best they can, somebody will have to step up.

That paired with zero post game could be a basic basketball problem against big boy teams.

Waaaayy better second half.

How do you think our young bigs did? First glance not sure I can tell much about their games yet. Udeh had some dunks! For some reason I had it in my head that Zuby would be the better of the two.

Cuffe played!!! How bout that? I was excited to see him and the new bigs.

I’m afraid Self is asking things of Joe that he simply isn’t comfortable with — get downhill to the hoop.

Nov 04, 2022 06:22 AM #279

Very happy to have basketball back!

By Exhibition standards this was one of the poorest games in the Self era. Good to get out there and have this tape for practice though.

I have no idea how this team will score once scouted. Self has his work cut out for him with this group. I know he'll mold them into something.

Some individual notes:

Gradey was as advertised on offense. That shot of his is capable of performing at an elite level. The announcer seemed pretty shocked he could drive to the hoop which lets me know he didn't scout him very well. I was particularly paying attention to his defense which was good to average at times. His offense will force him into the starting lineup. KJ is a non-factor on O besides his ability to move the ball & that's something scouting will expose against us.

Kevin- you can see clearly why Self liked him, versatile big guard that is well schooled defensively. His defensive awareness is top notch, like Self coached him for years already. Him and Harris on the press was bad news bears for Pitt St. On offense you can see why he's still in College his shot has just never developed to the point of being a weapon. Hopefully he can find some efficiency as the season progresses.

Juan/Jalen have that added smoothness/comfortability to their games after years in the system. Jalen looks in great shape.

Thought Bobby looked sharp especially with the hustle plays. Is he afraid to shoot?

We have a lot of small guards (Juan, Bobby, Yesufu, Cuffe) and only Joe seems to have the awareness or ability to look for his shot. Really hope Bobby can evolve his game past the little we've seen which can absolutely be a positive. Anyone else notice Bobby holding the area he had surgery on it seemed?

Not buying the back excuse on Rice. We know better by now.

Good to see Cuffe out there. He's certainly behind still and you can just see it. Unfortunate. Probably won't play much this season.

Love the long-term potential of Zuby/Udeh. Those are grown men. 3 months from now it will be interesting to see their development. Seems like one of these guys is absolutely a key.

There will be growing pains for sure. Hopefully in the opener we have a little more focus at the start.

Nov 04, 2022 11:47 AM #282

Clemence made the case for starting at the 5. I don't understand why many posters want Adams at the 5, which was where he started in the second half. In 14 min. Zach shot 3/3-7 pts, 4 rbs. 1 blk; whereas in 21 min, Adams scored 4 pts on 1/3 shooting, had an ugly 3 attempt, 1 rb, 1 stl and 1 blk. Yes, late in the second half Zuby reminded me of Dok in the paint. But, for now Zach should get most of the minutes at the 5 while Udeh and Zuby figure things out.

Nov 04, 2022 11:53 AM #283

@stoptheflop Zach is a good player but a horrendous fit for what Bill wants. Could see multiple times Bill was FURIOUS with him. Going to be very interesting...

Nov 04, 2022 12:25 PM #284

Oof. Live I thought Zach sucked last night. Was by far the 4th option at the 5 imo

Nov 04, 2022 01:10 PM #285

@bskeet as Farmer pointed out Wilson was really selfish this game.

He drove twice where he had easy dump offs to bigs for dunks and instead he tried tough layups up against two defenders and missed

Juan we were told is the most improved and will score. His stat line didn’t show any of that.

Love the 10 assists - hate against Pitt state he didn’t drive and live in the lane. That’s what’s frustrating if he isn’t going to score then he has to penetrate and he just passes it around the perimeter not doing much.

Nov 04, 2022 01:12 PM #286

@Crimsonorblue22 against the competition it isn’t great

You could have had 10 assists with guys wide open knocking down shots the second half

If we are told he will score more I expect to see that aggression but if we get Juan of last year he isn’t improved

How he didn’t shoot 500 threes a day plus his floaters I won’t understand. We are told he’s gonna be nails and lead us so I expect that to be the case (this Juan in the Nova game)

Nov 04, 2022 04:19 PM #287

@stoptheflop

There were a few plays where Zach caught the ball under the basket and had no basket awareness it seemed. I'm guessing those plays in Bill's eyes are no-no's especially as he searches for any kind of big that can give him a front court presence. His drive from the perimeter for a layup was nice. He showed his perimeter touch late on another. You see the tools that can be useful, but they also seem to be skills Bill doesn't care about featuring or catering too.

It was game zero, I don't think we've seen enough from him but first impression wasn't flattering. Zach had a clear path to starting here and so far he hasn't seized it.

I remain hopeful Zach does become a reliable option down low.

Nov 04, 2022 05:48 PM #289

Sure makes you wonder.

Bill values things and players many in the game wouldn’t. Curious why that is.

Gradey Dick led all KU players at the FT line hitting 3/5. As a team, KU FT shooting was 8/20. How in the hell does a team of D1 athletes shoot less than 50%? Doesn't McCarthy have an indoor basketball court for unlimited practice? There's no excuse for such poor FT shooting. It seems like our coaching staff just tolerates it.

Doesn't McCarthy have an indoor basketball court for unlimited practice? There's no excuse for such poor FT shooting. It seems like our coaching staff just tolerates it.

Hey, Cuffe at least hit the backboard!

Barely hit the backboard. I'll give him a pass due to nerves.

Poor guy. U could see he was nervous.

I’m hoping to see more of Cuffe early in the season. We don’t know much about his skills. Seemed quick enough on the floor.

Cuffe would not play much for Pitt State I would wager. Note the recruiting class this year, loaded up on guards.

Hoping he gets some PT in a real game so we can assess a bit more. Always exciting to see new players out there.
