KU vs. The Indiana Hoosiers Saturday 11AM This is a BIG GAME!!!
Dec 16, 2022 05:57 PM #1

Indiana (my home state now) has been fairly consistent. They have played an easy, then tough schedule, and have showed some cracks. Their best win? Nothing stands out. They beat UNC in Bloomington after that once proud program had been exposed. They've twice lost by double digits once to ranked Arizona last Saturday in a neutral court game and once on the road at Piscataway NJ to Rutgers, aka the state university of New Jersey.

They feature an All-American candidate in Trayce Jackson Davis, another decent big in Race Thompson another in the long line of potential Gophers who left Minnesota. They have a decent guard who I also laugh every time he shoots. Kind of reminds me of DeJuans ugly shot, but quite a bit worse. I laughed with glee when he was called on to beat Wisconsin at the end of the game and shot uglyly again. Maybe he'll humor us tomorrow by attempting some of his ugly shots.

Mike Woodson is still trying to win over Indiana fans. It's a tough sell. They're kind of look Nebraska football fans who think they're still relevant nationally. Indiana had one of those get hot streaks in 2002 and played in the NC game, a game we would have played against them had we beat Maryland. Kelvin Sampson was the Hoosier coach. Kelvin was really the last decent coach they've had. Indiana fans are impatient as 2002 was the last final four or even Elite 8. Three sweet 16's a decade ago were signs of hope but Tom Crean could never push them past that level.

The Assembly Hall is a sort of odd looking place. It's kind of like a college football arena with almost zero end zone seats but sideline seats that rise up high into the Bloomington sky. Seeing pictures of it I've been amazed at how high up it rises and have wondered how well you can see from way up there. The back row of the lower deck, which is huge on both sides really looks far away.

This would be a nice win to get for us. Not a must win or anything, but a ranked win on the road is a test that I'm thinking we'll deal them their third double digit loss.

A few pics lumpy style will follow as I can get to them.

@wissox

It's a home game, homie! Allen will be rockin

I'm hoping we show even more improvement than our last game in Columbia. I like having a week now to school our guys. Perhaps I'm dreaming... but I feel like this is a high basketball IQ team that learns at a rapid clip.

Indiana will definitely be a notch up in personnel over Mizzou. I wonder if they will try to go with their 6'10" Duncomb, who has been out for a while.

Had an interesting article on KUSports about our bench and how little we've used ours. I like how Self is playing this... develop a very capable starting 5 and get them playing in harmony and with speed THEN bring in bench to try to keep to that level.

Our biggest question mark is at the 5 on the bench. I'm starting to think KJ will be our starting 5 from here on out because we are developing offense with him in mind. His dominance against Mizzou was eye-opening and showed us what he can do against smaller bigs... especially with Self teaching the other 4 players how to feed him.

This Indiana game should be an entertaining game. We will be pushing tempo and it will probably come down to who can wrestle away more rebbies. I'm sure we can expect the typical rough play from a Big10 opponent. All our guys will need to step up on defense or this team will attack a weakness... even if it is just one weak defender.

@BeddieKU23 Wowa, really? IDK why I thought we were in Bloomington!

Been watching YouTube highlights of the 1993 game, with Jacque Vaughn's winning buzzer-beater in overtime. Lots of memories of that one.

I'd come back to KC for the holidays and drove to Lawrence for the game with my old KU girlfriend from the '70s, who was back in town from California. We were both looking for the Hawks to give Bobby Knight his comeuppance. Sans tickets and knowing that the game was a sellout, we hoped that the scalpers wouldn't ask insane prices for tickets. (We were wrong.)

So we went to Plan B, and scrambled to find a bar that was showing the game on TV. Fortunately just before tipoff, we ducked into a place at 23rd & Iowa. (Coincidentally, it was called the California Bar & Grill, long since gone.) When Jacque hit the 3-pointer to win the game the place went ballistic. Not quite AFH, but the level of craziness was still there, if on a smaller scale. Hell of a reunion for the two of us. What a finish.

No matter how Saturday's game ends up it can't match the drama of that one. (By the way, she and I are still good friends...just sent her a Xmas card the other day.)

Dec 17, 2022 04:04 AM #8

@nwhawkfan hmmmmm! A lot of finishes?

@Crimsonorblue22 Of course, Jacque is now coaching the Brooklyn Nets. By coincidence, my nephew used to be on their video crew at Barclays Center. While at KU he worked for Rock Chalk Video. A few years back he gave me a tour of their studios in the Fieldhouse. Quite a setup.

Dec 17, 2022 02:25 PM #12

I don't remember the game @nwhawkfan was referring to. Strange because I do recall a lot of nice moments in our history. But living in the ruralest of places in 1993 means we had very limited TV. I don't even know how I kept up with the Jayhawks back then? I did somehow. Things have changed so much that i don't miss a game unless i can't watch live and don't care to go back and watch us play Central Northern South Dakota state. I do recall being thankful they showed ranked teams scores on the news and since we were almost always ranked I'd see the scores.

Dec 17, 2022 03:42 PM #13

So hyped for this game. Been up since 4am!

Dec 17, 2022 03:49 PM #14

Students on break and Indiana fans travel well. I'm expecting them to have a decent amount of fans today. Also their 5-star guard Hood-Schifino will play today. Still, I expect us to win because I think our guards are better. KJ will have a tough match up with Trayce Jackson-Davis

Noticed dick on that three almost had a little hitch because he’s used to receiving it directly in that high pocket from Harris. Out point guard spoils the other four. That has been on full display this game.

Dec 17, 2022 04:26 PM #65

UT coach situation is big here. No one is clamoring for him to come back.

Dec 17, 2022 04:28 PM #66

Yes it was a foul. Unfortunate play

Dec 17, 2022 04:37 PM #95

@dylans it’s kind of an automatic call. Him diving resulted in the Indiana player tripping so kind of have to call something.

Minor nit-pick with ESPN. I use ESPN for boxscores. I go to the website where usually there's scores across the top. Nada. Stupid NFL games being played tomorrow are shown, but even after I click NCAAM, there's no scores.

@BeddieKU23 @dylans The one replay they showed confirmed what you said, the live action looked like a foul for sure on 0

Really thankful that missed

Dec 17, 2022 04:55 PM #166

Kevin needs a chewing at half

Dec 17, 2022 04:55 PM #167

quite a pass there by Harris though

Dec 17, 2022 04:55 PM #168

Am I seeing this correctly? Adams 3/3 FT?!?!

Dec 17, 2022 04:56 PM #169

Good minutes and 6 pts from Bobby, but he has a ways to go to be competent at the point.

Dec 17, 2022 04:56 PM #170

@Eric-san he's been working!

@Jethro I thought there was more than 1!

Dec 17, 2022 04:57 PM #173

Zuby didn't look especially athletic under the rim, but his 4 first half pts really help.

Dec 17, 2022 04:58 PM #174

I was happy to see Zuby keep his feet on the floor instead of jumping wildly around though. Thought he played pretty well and fit in the flow on offense

Dec 17, 2022 04:59 PM #175

I think it's time I got behind KJ. He really started us out right.

Dec 17, 2022 04:59 PM #176

Shooting 60% which usually works. Too many turnovers or we could be winning like 63-4 or something like that.

Dec 17, 2022 05:00 PM #177

Bobby minutes have been good. Happy with how KJ has played, especially on defense against TJD. Wilson needs to get going.

The athleticism will kick in once he quits thinking so much when he's out there.

Looking at IU game chat, found this classic:

It's really nice that Larry Bird is on our team though

Dec 17, 2022 05:04 PM #182

There was a group of Candy Stripers that came into town and went to the Wheel last night, and sang the IU fight song. So, I'm hoping they're really enjoying the game...

Another comment, I'll paraphrase "another terrible start, nothing KU is doing we're just being bad". Fans gonna fan I guess.

Dec 17, 2022 05:06 PM #187

IU's problem is lack of PG. If they get better at that position, they'll be better. They had more turnovers than we did in the 1st half.

We are lucky to have Juan

Dec 17, 2022 05:07 PM #188

Got to come out focused to start this 2nd half. Choke em off, give them no hope. Don't let them think they have a chance. - - NO RUNS

Dec 17, 2022 05:12 PM #189

Lazy ass start

Dec 17, 2022 05:13 PM #190

Dec 17, 2022 05:13 PM #191

Dec 17, 2022 05:13 PM #192

Dec 17, 2022 05:17 PM #204

Missing point blank shots

Dec 17, 2022 05:17 PM #205

Some bad bounces to start this half. Plays that were steals in the first half have bounced Indiana’s way leading to east buckets.

Dec 17, 2022 05:17 PM #206

Stripes only called 5 fouls in Indy so far.

Dec 17, 2022 05:17 PM #207

Definitely chucking a bit, those last two 3s weren’t very close

Dec 17, 2022 05:41 PM #279

A few shots Jalen usually makes and a few have been blocked by an elite rim protector. He has still impacted the game in a big way. We good

Dec 17, 2022 05:42 PM #280

A couple of Jalen's bad chucks were after he had a steal so those don't really count either

Nitpicking at this point, but we don't go hard to the rim and draw many fouls. That's why Jackson has so many blocks. And, that we have only 7! FT attempts, and 3 of those in the first minute or so. As many times as we've been near the rim, we should be looking at 20 FTAs....

Depth is still an issue as we basically only went 7 deep in a game that wasn't particularly close. Especially when the announcers were talking about Self developing the depth on the bench a bit and to not see it happen in a game that wasn't particularly close is concerning. Rice should've played some more today, especially with Wilson struggling with his shooting today and it would've been nice to see Yesufu get some more minutes today as well. It looks like the back up 5 spot is still going to be by committee based on match ups.

This would be my one gripe from the game today as this was KU's most complete game so far this season.

That's my point, Self only went 7 deep in a blowout game after he talked about needing to use more guys and having a perfect opportunity to get Rice some decent minutes in a game where Jalen Wilson struggled. Outside of the first few minutes of the second half, this game was basically never within 15 points, so why didn't Rice and Yesufu get some minutes today? Only going 7 deep is going to catch up to KU later this season.

We needed to build the lead up as much as possible, and beat them as badly as we could. Our next 3 games should give us ample opportunity to expand our bench.

Dec 17, 2022 10:43 PM #420

I’d argue 12 minutes for zuby all in extended runs with no quick hook is better than 6 for zuby and 6 for Udeh. Udeh got a lot of run early in the season and I imagine his time will come again.

But I like the idea of giving guys a good full run. Only thing keeping zuby from more minutes today was his own conditioning.

With the 5 posisiton what it is right now, KJ still needs as much time as possible to gel with the other four on the floor.

It’s easy to forget that 3 of the starters weren’t contributing to this team at all last year so them getting rolling and gelling with each other is as valuable if not more so than bench minutes for the second teamers.

That lead was built up as it was over 15 most of the game. There wasn't a great reason to not give Rice some extended minutes today against a quality opponent, especially with Jalen struggling like he did today. And I'm going to disagree about the next three games being ample opportunity to play the bench more because there's only 1 more non-confernce game left before B12 play starts and OSU might be the worst team in the league, but how often do we see KU truly blow out and dominate B12 teams? Not as frequently as we'd like because of the familiarity these teams and coaches have with one another. And that 3rd game is a road game against a Texas Tech team that doesn't have a bad loss this year and is probably going to be in the NCAA Tournament. So I don't see KU getting to expand the bench much over the next 3 games, maybe Harvard, but I'm betting on it happening with OSU or Tech though.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Maybe your sentence beginning "There wasn’t a great reason to not give Rice some extended minutes..." needs "that we know of" added to it. I know you know that Bill does a lot of decision making based on his perception of how well people have earned PT. Maybe some lack of effort in practice?

@Texas-Hawk-10

I hear what you are saying... I think Self's strategy is to iron out a really tough starting 5 before expanding much bench time.

All our guys had fresh legs today and it was important to run our starters for much of the 40.

KJ is now our big that has the most experience and I feel sure he is plugged into all our practice offense with the starting 5.

In just a few games we are seeing how much more he is contributing... and it isn't that his personal skills have improved, but he is plugged into an offense. He now knows what he is supposed to do.

In most areas now, KJ is setting the expectation standard for the other bigs to learn from.

Just my opinion. I'm sure Self has his reasons!

Dec 18, 2022 12:58 AM #428

I question more why MJ isn't playing more.

Maybe he's having a struggle keeping up in practice. He is still relatively new on the floor. Maybe he's still not quite up to speed. Self mentioned he needs more PT!

I didn't really bring up KJ because I didn't have an issue there. My issue with the minutes today is Self didn't back up his own comments about using the bench more today. Jalen Wilson was bad today so I don't think he should've played 33 minutes today. Give the last 10 minutes of the game to Rice amd get him experience against a good team. That's where my issue is with today's game.

You also know as well as I do that Self's bench doesn't expand once B12 play starts, it contracts. With some of these games KU's going to have, Self needs to have options. In about a month, KU is going to have a 14 day stretch of KSU in Manhattan, TCU, Baylor in Waco, Kentucky in Lexington, and the second KSU game. That is a stretch KU will need the bench to produce quality minutes, and 2 guys playing off the bench isn't going to cut it during that stretch.

This is why I don't understand why he didn't play today with Jalen having a terrible game. This was a perfect low risk situation to get Rice extended minutes against a quality opponent.

Dec 18, 2022 01:30 AM #432

@Texas-Hawk-10

I was surprised JWil got that many minutes when I saw him taking breathers during the game. For whatever reason, he didn't seem to have as much energy as usual. A few times I saw him jog back on defense, even when the ball was ahead of him. I'm sure it will be brought up when they watch game film later... but I thought that would have been time to substitute him with MJ.

Dec 18, 2022 01:34 AM #433

@Texas-Hawk-10

No way I would consider myself capable to coach a successful D1 team. There must be reasons for it all, including why MJ isn't playing enough.

Perhaps Self is creating a situation where MJ wants PT more and more. Maybe it's a motivational reason.

Or... thinking back to Self's history... maybe MJ isn't proving to him he has enough defense prowess to earn more PT minutes.

BTW: It is refreshing to see our defense taking shape! Kevin sure brings a lot to our defense, Juan is amazing... and now we are seeing some moments with Gradey... oh... almost forgot (how could I) KJ and JWil.

I just looked over the stat sheet and noticed Gradey had 5 steals!

Regardless of who plays our 5, if we can post trap effectively (like we did today), we should continue to shine on D! I can think of some National Championship teams that did it without a real 5... Villanova comes to mind first!

Wow, that was a helluva balanced performance by the Jayhawks today. Very impressive.

Juan with the show boat assist! Making me eat my words. nice.

One complaint (sorry): Cmon, Bill. Play the bench more. We're gonna need some of these guys at some point. I know 7 guys got 10+ minutes, but we need to season some of these players. We had plenty of margin to give them some run.

We needed to build the lead up as much as possible, and beat them as badly as we could. Our next 3 games should give us ample opportunity to expand our bench.

That's my bad on the next 3. I thought we had 3 more non-con games. I agree that we don't want to play musical chairs in conference games.

I really like this team this year at this time of the season better than last year's team at this time. If that made any sense...lol. It's just 5 unselfish guys giving everything they can on every play. I was amazed with 2 minutes left, with a 20 point lead, we have two guys on the floor fighting for the ball. The culture shows on the court. These are a tight group of guys.

Maybe the hesitation with MJ is perhaps he hasn't fully bought in to the whole thing yet. How is a guy that debated G-League vs. KU holding up getting scrub minutes?

@Crimsonorblue22 not sure on your earlier question. I know there were some football players at the game that are not current KU players. So must have been recruits. Lots of Indiana fans! They were mostly nice.

@drgnslayr

Self mentioned that turnovers and defense were main issues for MJ. Must be seeing that in practice. He's in the toughening box for sure.

@BShark

Is right here. Self doesn't trust the bench beyond Bobby right now. Joe, sometimes out of necessity. Zuby flashed big time and earns more chances with how he played. Beyond that it's up to the players to play better in practice. Self usually has a good tune on who deserves to play.

I will say not playing Rice or Udeh when the game was well in hand was concerning.

Udeh is lost right now. Almost the 6'10'' version of Cuffe. I do think he can eventually be really good but we knew he would be a project. We will have to play a back-up big in most games (Missouri was a fairly special case).

Zuby was great. Not sure if it was a one off due to match ups or the start of something where he gets rotation minutes, but his athleticism is just off the charts.

I too remember Jalen taking a possession off on defense; he didn't run down court, he didn't challenge the player with the ball but instead left the player to guard the corner. That reminds me of NBA-minded Andrew Wiggins, who seemed to glide through the first 30 minutes of the game, then got more aggressive at the end. Jalen wasn't our dog Saturday and seemed content to just watch the game from the floor. I'm sure the big lead had a lot to do with his complacency.

Dec 18, 2022 02:47 PM #442

@Jethro Zuby is the only big that has size and plays big. At this point I really want to see him develop more.

Dec 18, 2022 03:39 PM #443

@nwhawkfan And it continued into the breaks on CBS all day during the other games. Sheesh. We weren't even included in the last break where they showed highlights....not even a mention or even flashing the score.

Dec 18, 2022 03:45 PM #444

I know Coach Self said he was a little surprised and a little disappointed that the North West corner bleachers were empty. - -The PHOG should never have any available seats

@BShark

For sure Udeh has displayed a lack of maturity on the floor a good portion of the time he has played. Flashes are great but his lows are unplayable so it's a balancing act with him until he starts to get comfortable. I think a lot of the skills are there but he just hasn't had the light switch go on upstairs yet.

Zuby is mature and has a few skills we need on the court now which is rebounding and defending the post at his size. He made it difficult without fouling on Jackson Davis and was in the right spot on all his buckets. If he did that more we are cooking

Dec 18, 2022 04:11 PM #446

@BeddieKU23 Ya if we can get that from Zuby every game we are a 1 seed.

Dec 18, 2022 07:46 PM #447

I think it will be hard for us to keep both Zuby and Udeh after this season... seems one will be hitting the transfer portal.

Dec 18, 2022 09:26 PM #448

I can see Zach leaving as well.

Let this sink in a minute guys. - - KU just beat the heck out of Indiana which were ranked 14th at the time - whether they are over ranked or not - -just beat the hall out of em - KU beats them by 22 , when your leading scorer and leading rebounder - -has scored in double figures every game this year- - Jalen goes 4 - -18 from the field and - - 1 -- 6 from the three and we STILL win by 22 pints

Some of Juan passes Saturday was just crazy - -the way KU passed the ball a lot of the game Saturday - was just incredibly good - -the ball for sure didn't stick-- kind of shows the capability of just how good this team can be - -.

if we can get any kind of production from our non starters like we did Saturday - -we got 29 points from Bobby , Zuby & others - -look out . .ROCK CHALK GUYS
