Good points about Vaughn, of course, but it's fun to think of this as Self's coaching tree but with the branch trained to stay close to the trunk - a few years' fertilization and we get to keep the fruit!

Sometimes I think it'd be ok if the top talents from McDonalds and High Schools had a semi-pro league and skipped college altogether. Then we'd preserve college sports with more traditional scholarship student-athletes. Like there would still be plenty of talent to make the games high-level and exciting. It also seems just - to give top-caliber athletes a route other than college to get paid what they deserve while they pursue the NBA without distorting the fairness of our leagues. I'd still be a Jayhawk fan, to be sure, and I don't think my enthusiasm/enjoyment would lose a step like it might as this new status quo evolves.
I haven't heard even one of y'all "fans" offer to marry Furphy so he can get his green card and and be paid
@nuleafjhawk I've picked a perfect bracket every single season for years...Every bracket is perfect - like the smile of a child or dewdrops on a flower, each it's own delicate creation, the vessel of joy and dreams, prayerful fancy and wild yearning for a just and glorious world.
@kjayhawks I'm going with ours, though the repeat is a strong weight toward UConn's - really want one of those baaaaaaad for Self and the Hawks. That said, I'm super proud of our conference streak. And, weirdly, a down coupla years adds pathos to the whole thing for me. I'm optimistic that the NIL era will settle into something that lets me keep on believin' we will eventually dominate. (I've never pretended to be a totally rational fan!!!)

I respect y'all who are down on KJ and Juan and I understand why you'd like to see better talent in those starting slots. That said, a much higher consideration for me is just how much I've grown to know and like them both. I mean, as college ball becomes an annual revolving door I really cherish the guys who stay and develop. It's waaaaay more fun for me to root for those guys than strange new faces. I'm more invested in the vicissitudes of the season. It's more fun to be a fan. So Juan and KJ are tip tier keepers on my wish list, moreso even than Hunter and Furphy.
I'm shifting my attention to a reduced-personnel, nothing to lose Big 12 Tournament in which Bill Self gets to be creative with subpar (though still considerable) talent and a few guys who will figure prominently in the next few seasons. I want see development and improv and tenacity and a hell of a fun time!
It helps us (maybe a little?) that Houston's in a tough fight tonight and then has to travel home before we see them on Saturday.

I remember that game - I was about 12 or so. Saw it on TV with a super-pumped KSU family. Thinking back it was a pretty formative sports experience for me.
@bskeet And all a game's total officiating stats could be aggregated into an index or coefficient so you could compare across games, seasons, teams, venues... I'd love to have that reported in box scores, etc Good idea!
It's wild how I continue to believe until basically the very end. I suppose it's a habit from watching the Chiefs.
