BOWL THREAD
Dec 24, 2022 12:33 AM #1

Hey there...Happy Holidays! I wanted to start a bowl thread for various and sundry bowl observations. Shout out to the Houston Coogs for winning the Independence bowl against Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. Word has come out that Bobby Boucher a.k.a. the Waterboy did not play in the bowl because his momma found out he was playing that foosball.

Not a lot of fans at the Mizzou bowl.

Dec 24, 2022 03:58 AM #3

@Crimsonorblue22 And they lost...hee hee hee!

Dec 24, 2022 12:58 PM #4

I wish KU football would provide more reports on preparation for our first bowl game since the Dec 31, 2008 Insight Bowl victory over Minnesota. I'd like to read/hear more about Daniels and Hishaw. KU is 6/12 in bowl games so I hope to see us go over .500 with a big win over Arkansas.

I sure hope attendance is much better at our Liberty Bowl game than Missouri's bowl game yesterday. The attendance looked like a USFL game. The crowd was shown as 29,000, but looked much smaller in the 66,000 seat Raymond James stadium. It sure seems to me that enthusiasm for all these bowl games has really dropped. I haven't watched a whole game yet. I was really disappointed that Baylor played so poorly against Air Force after beating us so easily.

KU sold out their allotment of tickets and have been trying to secure more tickets. I expect there to be a big showing of KU fans in Memphis.

I was lucky enough to make it to the 1973 Liberty Bowl when KU played North Carolina State (coached by Lou Holtz, who later went on to Notre Dame and many years as an analyst on ESPN). A great 500-mile road trip with four other guys and a case of beer.

We didn't have time to do much sightseeing, though a couple of us talked about driving by Graceland (where Elvis was still living at the time). Got into town just in time for the pre-game rally at a local barbecue joint. When we arrived at the stadium I noticed its odd shape, with lots more rows in the middle and fewer on the ends. It was one of the first stadiums to be built that way. (It wasn't until years later that I figured out that they did that in order to sell more of the expensive midfield seats, a practice since repeated in many other stadiums.)

As for the game, the Jayhawks, led by QB David Jaynes, were a slight favorite to win. The game was tied in the third quarter when the Wolfpack punted to KU. While going back to catch the punt, Bruce Adams got tripped by a Wolfpack player. The refs missed the foul, the ball hit Adams, and NC State recovered deep in our territory. (Video replays confirmed the blown call.) That changed the momentum of the whole game.

The Wolfpack scored a few plays later, and tacked on another TD in the fourth quarter. We lost 31-18 despite having the edge in most statistics. Jaynes had a pretty good game, setting Liberty Bowl records as he threw for 218 yards on 24 of 38 passes. Adams had eight receptions, and fullback Robert Miller had a career high 104 yards rushing. The Jayhawks outgained the Wolfpack in total yardage 348-274.

Enjoyed the trip, if not the outcome. (I still have the game program, ticket stub and a souvenir cup.) Hoping for a much better finish this time.

@Texas-Hawk-10 did you hear they're cancelling some rooms due to lack of water? I guess it's due to so many frozen pipes bursting. Sounds like a huge problem. Matt Tait's room was cancelled. Some people were moved to other hotels. Hope you are good!

My hotel's good

Dec 27, 2022 11:49 PM #12

I think KU fans are outnumbering Arkansas fans at least 5 to 1 from what I've seen around town at my hotel, the parade today, and the Suns/Grizzlies game tonight.

Too bad there aren't any KU players on either roster and Devin Booker is out injured. But I looking forward to seeing Ja Morant in person for the first time.

Dec 28, 2022 09:18 PM #19

Dec 28, 2022 09:19 PM #20

@jayballer67 grew up in western Kansas and the river was always called the ar- KANSAS

Dec 28, 2022 09:26 PM #22

Arkansaw is somewhere below Missouri. That is about as low as you can get.

Dec 28, 2022 09:48 PM #23

well holding to 3 instead of 7 is good I guess

Dec 28, 2022 10:16 PM #47

Dang

Dec 28, 2022 10:23 PM #48

Wow wtf happened. I started watching at 7-3 and we instantly started sucking. This is all my fault.

Dec 28, 2022 10:23 PM #49

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Dec 28, 2022 10:23 PM #50

Fumbleruskis and a pick

Dec 28, 2022 10:27 PM #51

Same problem we have had. Our defense getting no pressure at all on Jefferson, Arkansas getting pressure of Jalen. - -Were moving the ball but mistakes

Dec 28, 2022 10:29 PM #52

Big opportunity for JD to show just how clutch he is.

Dec 28, 2022 10:34 PM #53

So much for JD! Bean time?

Dec 28, 2022 10:34 PM #54

All I can say is- - -WTF

Dec 28, 2022 10:35 PM #55

I’d love to have a drive where we don’t hand them the ball. Both picks were just bad throws. And the fumble… I was kinda hoping this game would at least be fun.

Dec 28, 2022 10:44 PM #56

I was thinking KU would show better then this. This Arkansas team is no better then some other Big 12 teams we played well against -just a really poor showing

Dec 28, 2022 10:53 PM #57

Well has everyone left the room lol?

Dec 28, 2022 10:54 PM #58

Fugly. What else is on?

Dec 28, 2022 10:54 PM #59

@jayballer67 the defense has been bad but that’s kind of just who they are. The offense has just added to that by continually giving up the ball. This d needs good long drives AND lots of points. Hoping for a better second half to at least make it competitive. This team doesn’t give up.

Dec 28, 2022 10:56 PM #60

Well it looks like we WERE NOT ready for a bowl game yet. - -NOT Defensively for sure

Dec 28, 2022 10:57 PM #61

Forgot the game was on. Looks like the team forgot as well.

extra practice seems to have helped Arkansas more.

Dec 28, 2022 11:00 PM #62

Dec 28, 2022 11:03 PM #63

@BShark depressing!

Dec 28, 2022 11:17 PM #64

Amazingly, only one person at our watch party has left so far. And he had to go back to work. Hoping for a halfway competitive second half.

Dec 28, 2022 11:27 PM #65

Glad for that pick! Game was getting out of hand.

Ya KU forgot we had a game today. - In Reality , you just can't turn the ball over 3 times in a half. - -Big difference is the line of Scrimmage - -we gettin beat bad on both sides of the ball

Dec 28, 2022 11:30 PM #67

If were gonna have ANY kind of a chance we have to come out and score right out the gate. - -Defense has got to come out and show in this 2nd half - -get some stops

Dec 28, 2022 11:32 PM #68

I haven’t heard a fat lady singing quite yet. Get a score on this first possession and it’s on

Dec 29, 2022 12:36 AM #81

Well there was our chance to really put pressure on Arkansas, Three straight stops by our D and this last time when we needed to score we get a three and out

Dec 29, 2022 12:43 AM #82

Our defense has played MUCH better this 2nd half. -We have actually out scored them 10-7 in the 2nd half.

Wondering about Devin he must be hurting he hasn't hardly played or ran it anyways this 2nd half -- it's been Ky

Dec 29, 2022 12:52 AM #83

Can't say our defense didn't do it's part in the 2nd half. - -Arkansas last four drives - - - 13 plays and a total of 22 yards. That's pretty dam solid

Dec 29, 2022 01:03 AM #84

Dec 29, 2022 01:11 AM #85

Dec 29, 2022 02:35 AM #151

Good news is this team has a lot of room for growth and showed a lot of potential. How many games this year did they take themselves out of with decision making and untimely turnovers? Only really outclassed talent wise in the Texas and Oklahoma games. This won’t be Lance’s last bowl game.

Dec 29, 2022 03:20 AM #152

Things I learned from whomever the color commentator was. KU receiver gets obviously interferred with and Mr. SEC announcer says it wasn't, kept going on and on.

When we scored in the last minute and we were down by two, he informed us KU is going to have to go for 2 here.

Other than the announcer, I had a miracle myself. I was at my daughters in Minnesota, new we wouldn't be able to make it home in time for the start of the game so I figured out how to record the game and had the foresight to record the next game for the inevitable game overlap.

The two turnovers were deadly. We win if Jalen doesn't make a really bad throw and the kick returner doesn't fumble.

Lance Liepold will have a statue someday.

Glad we're getting Jalon back. Hopefully we get a defense next year because our D was pourous.

Like others I was a little miffed by the last minute call. It was a bit strange to take it out of Jalon's hands.

Dec 29, 2022 03:56 AM #153

OJ Burroughs was defensive player and Jalon offensive. Gave the trophies in post game.

Dec 29, 2022 03:58 AM #154

Three biggest things for KU to work on during the off-season is limiting self inflicted mistakes, getting off to a quicker start, and most importantly, keep building the depth on defense.

That 5-6 minute stretch at the end of the 1st quarter is what absolutely killed KU tonight. Probably a 21 point swing during that stretch with the fumbled kickoff and first pick. KU was driving as Arkansas hadn't showed an ability to stop KU to that point so KU probably scores a TD on that drive.

Just patting myself on the back for this one. We gotta good one and he’s ours at least one more year!

Earlier in the game we went for a two point conversion and failed.
All things being equal, if we kick the extra point, we win in regulation by one.

@Hawk69 Yeah. I know Bean is beating himself up, but he would never have been in that position if it weren't for all the turnovers.

Now I'm hoping that there are 108 points scored in the Sugar Bowl on Saturday. All by Alabama. ROLL TIDE!!

Here's the thing with the last play, the play worked as designed as KU had a wide open receiver and Bean likely could've ran in himself. I also don't think it was a bad play call because Arkansas absolutely expected Daniels to keep it. We've also criticized the play calling being too conservative in key situations this season and that was definitely not a conservative play call with the game on the line.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Ok, so maybe play call was the wrong term, but taking the ball out of Jalon's hands was the call I was referring to. You're right, the play seemed to work correctly, but since Jalon had executed so well I'm just a bit surprised he wasn't the one with the task of tying it up.

@wissox agree but he had also gotten his bell rung pretty bad in OT, looked like. I was surprised like you, especially since Bean seemed to take a few games to knock the rust off as starter and had made poor reads in pressure situations this year, wasnt expecting him to make a read on the most important play of the year.

My note to a Silo Tech fan:

No whining if you lose. No rushing the field if you win. Act like you've been there before. Tuck your shirt in- no agriculture references. Remove the pocket protector. ( Trying to help lil bro as he enters a rare moment in the spotlight).

Signed,

KU

TCU with probably the biggest win in school history upsetting Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl to advance to the National Championship game in a thriller.

Is there anything worse than a crying UM fan? It's right up there with Missourah fans.

Crappy BIG offenses make the defenses of Michigan and Ohio State look better than they are.

@BShark One of my summer helpers was an SEC fan - she wanted to know if we played any defense in the Big12. -nope

With just one game to go, it's been a pretty weak postseason overall for the Big 12, save TCU. (And of course, there's that 25-point Jayhawk comeback...)

The MAC has the best record, though really, no conference has looked dominant. Parity of a sort.
