Start of the 18 game war! Let's hold serve before a tough 2 game road stretch. Hopefully they came back from the holiday break ready
Should be an interesting match up. They have some shot blockers, so Jalen should get at least 1 shot blocked...lol. We're favored by 10- I'm thinking we cover.

Kenpom has them as a top 20 defense.. Boynton seems to get them to play up in this building. I'm hoping their lack of offensive firepower is a big difference for us. We should win and cover but they will have to shoot better then last time to make that happen
Just looked at Kansas's schedule and the end of Jan is going to be brutal with road games at BU, UK, ISU. Kentucky is not good this year, but we all know they will get up for their match vs KU so i'm expecting another L but could easily see 2 road losses in that stretch.
I wonder how much Bryce would be contributing if he had stayed. Bryce is averaging 11.5 pts. I don't think he'd be in our top 7, so not many minutes with us.
Trepidation. KU often seems to have trouble with OSU. They stayed with UConn earlier, losing by 10. Away game.
Great day for sports. Trying to watch like 4 different things right now.
Let's go Jayhawks
My disdain for Alabama and the SEC supersedes my dislike for KState so I'm hoping KState can win.
Texans really need to expand their sports interests. Ranked TCU playing on a holiday weekend afternoon and they can't find 6800 people interested in attending a really good home game? Must be sad to be a fan of just about every other team in America, because most teams have many empty seats these days.
How can there be 4 minutes left in the UK game when its a blowout
@KirkIsMyHinrich Not sure I've ever watched both playoff semifinal games but I think I will today. I've been doing a lot of channel switching for the last half hour.
Alright Alright Alright

What is our big 12 opener win streak?
Four to six.
I saw future KStater Dai Dai Ames play the other night in a tournament. He scored 66 in a previous round. He's really good. Watched Jacob Pullen's younger brother in the 3rd place game for famed Proviso East as well. He's coached by Donny Boyce and Sherrell Ford who were Proviso East teammates. Boyce played at Colorado. Ford played at UIC and they also weren't the best known Proviso East Pirate, as Michael Finley made up a trio that were all drafted, two were their colleges all time leading scorer and Ford was only 13 points off from the all time best.

whew...thank heavens I was wrong...there are my Jayhawks!
35-10 Bammer... that will hush up some of the obnoxious fans...
A complete solid game from our men. Improved lobs and rebounding.

Come on jalen
No F bombs yet!
Wide open baseline J
Gradey active on D
Gradey struggling to execute on his defensive activity :)
Sluggish
Brutal start
Jesus Kevin 3 turnovers already. get your crap together
2022 can't end soon enough...!!
Jalen has missed 2 shots he should be making
We need some BIG mojo off the bench today
Who gives us the spark from the bench today?
Zuby?
@RockChalkinTexas jinx
There you go, Zuby
Bullcrap make
Wow zuby that was nice
Thompson no career day 4 u
Theres that weird little side spin shot by bryce thompson we know and dont love
Dick being active on defense. Love to see it
Trying to match their D.
Zuby defends the sideline and gives up a bunny
Oh NO
Dick got fouled
Gradey got injured potentially because he turned to argue with the ref
Not sure what it takes to get a foul here
Trying to break out but too hurried maybe.
KJ got called for a moving screen but Oklahoma St has been setting moving screens all day
Just not in sync
Missed shots and turnovers are the culprit
kinda sluggish
- -OSU with 3 -- - 3pt makes already
YesJoe
Why foul?
Joe + Dajuan = sadness
Pretty pathetic effort out there right now
You cant handle the KJ hipcheck
Course they scored on a missed call only a blind person misses
Finally
Yesefu admires his 3 and gives up the chance for an offensive RB
Joe isn't the answer
We're not driving ENOUGH
Dick is struggling
Awful foul call awful
@approxinfinity turnovers are uncharacteristic
UCONN goes down, we could move up, of course, we have to start playing like we deserve to move up.
Zach can show us something here that sets him apart, would love to see it
Foul calls have been meh but we need to play a lot tougher. This is going to be every game in the B12
Their D is good. We have made a few shots in rhythm but they are dictating on both ends. Another half in the 20's. Sigh.
9 pts from the bench so thats nice
Face off!!!
Wide....Open
BANCO !
Wasn't paying attention, is there a reason DeJuan is out?
God Thompsons shot is awful. Get a Hand in his face
C'mon crowd
Bobby and Kevin should sit the rest of this game. Good grief
So he's playing KJ with 2 fouls and he's produced nothing inside
We have to get Juan healthy. Damn.
@wissox said in KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread:

Seriously. Get a hand in their face, the percentages will go way down.
Stupidest turnovers I've seen all year.
The one man unforced turnover machine: Kevin McCullar.
Jeez. Take him out already.
Our pg play today sucks so bad
SMDH
Jayhawks about to be humbled. Good for the future of the team.
I don't get nervous until the last minute. I do recall a KU game recently in which a 14 point deficit was nothing!
Alright guess we arent back from break yet
Everyone seems to looking ahead to going down to Mass St. later tonight.
Holy crap, Bill going deep bench
MJ didn't even touch him
FlummOXed
Missed him
Wellp
Cam isn't backing down
Gonna give them 20 throws
Hopefully the starters get their heads forcefully extracted from their asses at halftime, because these weirdo lineups arent doing it, hopefully we can execute our game and not theirs
Is Udeh hurt or just not playing?
Ugliest half of the year. Time to take a comeback lesson from the football team.
Just a comedy of errors today.
Oklahoma State has forced errors for sure, but we're just not playing well.
Example: Cam Martin as covering the big dude underneath, and let him score. FOUL THE CRAP out of him! He can't shoot FTs! Your fouls are not important in the big picture.
9 made 3s from them in the first half. Sure
32% team
@KirkIsMyHinrich said in KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread:

They said Ernest- - -just isn't getting it. - - ya think ? -- if he is getting passed over by Cam Martin then there is something wrong for sure
Giving up 45 means we will need 50 points in the second half to have a chance. OSU with 18 treys launched wow.
They are 9/18 from 3 in the first half.
They average 6.9 makes per game at 32.5%.
Some of them have been wide open looks but they've also been hitting some contested hero ball shots.

Of course a team I think that's shooting 29 % for the year from three- -gonna come out and make every three they throw up. - -Pathetic effort by KU, 11 turnovers , sloppy , sloppy , sloppy. - -Some really Bizarre lineup combinations on the floor for KU
The Big12 football bowlers are weak.
OSU already over their average made threes for an entire game. 18 attempts to 6. No wonder why KU is losing.

And we've already hit our season average on turnovers while also not getting to the line. Surprised it's not more actually
I hope to hell we come out and dictate the game instead of reacting
We are just following them around.
Looking good
Good D
3 on Bryce š
Bryce you're the manšŖ
When in doubt, flail the arms. Might get a call !
Kevin has flat out been shit
Who is that a foul on? LIke nobody?
Garbage fouls
Donāt see Harris get blown by like that.
Bullshit
Need some takeaways and turn on offense
Wilson gets fouled every time he is near the basket but they've only called it a couple of times.
We're up 9-7 fouls and they've been chucking all day. Sure
10 - -- 3's by this dam OSU team
Another pitty-pat call
Wow this ref crew is awful
JUAN !
Here we go
Gradey has earned 6 points with hustle rebounds
D Juan from distance
And two-thirds of the deficit magically disappears.
Huge shot by Juan but even better effort by gradey
Nice back spin
Clutch Dajuan!
Weird team today. Love Gradey's play.
Well - - -wee in a lot better spot then we were at half.
That was really a nice effort by Gradey to keep that possession alive too
The run began when I put in my long dangling KU earrings!š
4!
4 fouls
Gradey with 9 boards
Thank you so much!
Amazing what happens when you challenge all shots
@Crimsonorblue22 down by 2!
Hack hack block
Mercy the energy just like night and day
ISU up 10 on Baylor
Wow the crowd is bananas

At the half we had 9 or 10 TO's, i forget which, but we only had 12 at the end of the game and that's really a key to this comeback.

His passing is likely underrated by most as well. One of the best passing bigs we have played under Self.
Only 1 to 2nd half?
Two I think
What an amazing 2022 for KU.
Saw some people comparing KJ to Jamari. We can stop that right now.
Every OSU fan and neutral fan who wanted KU to lose will fixate on that block that could have been called a foul but will ignore things like the most obvious moving screen in the world to free up Bryce Thompson for a 3 that put OSU up 64-62.
And then when we play at Oklahoma St later this season that controversial block will probably be replayed giving the impression that we had some huge officiating advantage because the game was at AFH.

@BeddieKU23 I'd rather talk about his FLOPS!
The Jayhawksā final record in 2022: 36-5 with one national championship.
I fear we may have a season where our guys are too complacent going into games. It's hard to followup a National Championship year as it is hard to stay motivated while we take the best shot from everyone.
Our first half energy level was horrible. Our second half energy was better, but still was not jacked up... just better. The incremental difference made the game score change dramatically because when we have high energy we are capable of beating anyone, including blowing out anyone. But when we come out with subpar energy we could lose to just about anyone.
I hope this isn't what we should expect moving forward, mostly because this team has plenty of talent and capability to defend and move the ball like very few teams we have ever had.
Not sure where our defense went (especially in the first half) but we sure are missing those steals that end in run outs!
I suspect Self will be on them heavy for this performance... as he should be.
But... at least we got the win and these kinds of wins are crucial as we get the "W" while also making it a learning experience.
Kudos to OSU and Thompson for maintain good composure and bringing game!
KJ has such a soft touch in mid-range. He definitely is establishing himself as an offensive weapon. He is playing smart to go right up with shots in the paint instead of coming down and setting up for shots (bound to get blocked by taller players).
Gradey's two offensive boards were crucial in this victory and lead to made treys... but in many ways he is being exposed as a freshman now until he figures out how to get the right shot off for his treys. Now is when he could really use the help of some NBA shooters. Like how he mentioned Steph Curry... he would be a great one to learn from... even watching his tape should be helpful.

No bad coaches in the B12 now that Weber is gone. I was trying to rank them all the other day and was having trouble with it.
Let me help - #1 Bill Self ā¦then the rest.
Even Ochai had some trouble adjusting to how teams guarded him and he was a senior. Gradey is definitely being schemed against, almost every time he caught the ball a defender had a hand in his face so it was a well executed plan. Gradey has an elite shot but he has a ways to go off the bounce from a speed/shiftyness ability. Teams have seen that on film and found some success slowing him down. It's pretty telling what opposing coaches think of Gradey when they are trying to shut down your 2nd leading scorer, who's a freshman. I thought Gradey could have done more of what he usually does when he gets guarded that way is to utilize the back cut for layups etc. Didn't see a lot of that from anyone tbh but especially Gradey who's skilled at this. It makes a defensive player guarding him adjust. Freshman moments. I was very happy with his effort plays yesterday which helped the team win.
Great to see KJ's development and his confidence.
Bryce T looks like a totally different player now, good for him.

That's good to know
Yesterday reminded me of last year. This was Miami/UNC all over again. We held them to 28% shooting in the 2nd half. It's like we put a big clamp on other team's offenses the 2nd half. The CLAMP lives!

@Jethro my only concern is that this team seems to know they can flip a switch and make things happen. That can be a dangerous mindset. Iād rather the switch be stuck in the on position.
Playin' with fire...it works until it doesn't.
BTW, KJ has scored over 10 points in 6 straight.
Kjraymond Green.
Anybody know kj's ft stats from say last 6 games? He's really improved

11/14 so just under 79%
I saw Kevin!(s) block from the front, doesn't look like he comes down on Bryce. Bryce falls forward on his own so Kevin has room to come down without landing on him. I know I know. But it doesn't look like he follows thru on his body𤩠trust me.šāš¼Honest
@BeddieKU23 thx stats man! He's really improved, all around!

Itās very easy to expect more out of Gradey every game after seeing that pure shot. But to shoot that shot heās gotta get open. That didnāt happen at all yesterday.
So far he doesnāt seem to have as good conditioning as other players. Wonder why that is, or if Iām imagining it.
He forced lots of shots yesterday. Thatās fine, we need him to shoot, but the coaching staff needs to find a way to get him open. It sure doesnāt seem like he run off screens like Och used to do to get open. Or maybe our screens arenāt as good?

Bryce T looks like a totally different player now, good for him.
Not trying to sound bitter but that game was an anomaly for him statistically compared to the year so far.

Seems we ALWAYS have one of those guys every year
He is playing a lot of minutes and we may forget he's only played 13 games here. I do see him getting tired at times and I think that's just part of his development. He is by no means a finished product physically. Same with adjusting to getting open etc, games like this help him learn and adjust going forward. Film can point out and coaching can continue to work on it. This team did not move the ball great until the 2nd half and Gradey is sort of dependent on getting setup to score at times and the way he was guarded was disadvantageous.

He sure has. Really love his progression, he's showing why he was good in HS even though he was undersized. Playing to his athletic ability and making the opportunities he gets count.

Oklahoma State had an amazing first half on both sides of the ball. First i've seen em play this year, but guessing they played out of their gourds.
Somehow they were able to shut down our 3 pt line, AND any inside penetration.
Credit their effort and strategy. Both Wilson and Gradey affected.

Oh definitely they shot the 3 in the first half well above average and then thankfully they came back down to earth in the 2nd. Bryce Thompson made 7 3's, against his old team so definitely an one-off type of game there. Him and Wright made several highly contested shots that were lucky looking. We allowed them to get confident in that first half and that played a part in their ability to make shots.
I respect Boynton, he really knows how to get his team to play well in Allen Fieldhouse. Always sound defensively and coaches them up well.
Yes...
There are two big reasons why teams focus on Gradey.
First... if he's left open he will quickly score treys in bunches.
Second... if he is guarded closely... he won't!
What is Gradey's biggest skill? It's getting shots up quickly with speed and perfect form. That is great... but now he needs to put some time in on how to score when guarded. Develop a few moves off the dribble that give him scoring space but also where he is almost as reliable when shooting those shots verses being wide open. He'll get there. He will get there because he has uncanny ability to learn the physical parts of basketball. He doesn't have that much of a background as a sharp shooter like he is now... he used to be a slasher more than a smooth jump shooter.
Then think about other parts of the game... like rebounding... muscling up on defense. seeing more floor (like Juan does). Gosh... imagine if he stayed at KU for 4 years? We might win a couple more Natties if he did!
I feel pretty sure he is magnetized on Steph Curry's game... who isn't? But I'd like to see him study Luka Doncic. A guy who doesn't need perfect athleticism to dominate the league. He's like the next Larry Bird. He needs about a foot of vertical leap to create scoring space!

Boynton didnāt complain about calls, heās a classy guy. I like him. Said he wouldnāt want to ref. Probably my next favorite coach in big 12
My exact thoughts! We are lucky to have him in the Big 12... especially at OSU, a school that doesn't have a great basketball environment. I remember a few years ago when the coach was begging students to come to games. OSU is extremely lucky to have a coach of his quality!

I would put money on Kansas NOT losing 7+ games in conference. Wonāt go undefeated, but those projections are insulting! Lol
