Start of the 18 game war! Let's hold serve before a tough 2 game road stretch. Hopefully they came back from the holiday break ready

Dec 31, 2022 03:52 PM #2

Should be an interesting match up. They have some shot blockers, so Jalen should get at least 1 shot blocked...lol. We're favored by 10- I'm thinking we cover.

Kenpom has them as a top 20 defense.. Boynton seems to get them to play up in this building. I'm hoping their lack of offensive firepower is a big difference for us. We should win and cover but they will have to shoot better then last time to make that happen

Dec 31, 2022 04:52 PM #4

Just looked at Kansas's schedule and the end of Jan is going to be brutal with road games at BU, UK, ISU. Kentucky is not good this year, but we all know they will get up for their match vs KU so i'm expecting another L but could easily see 2 road losses in that stretch.

Dec 31, 2022 05:16 PM #5

I wonder how much Bryce would be contributing if he had stayed. Bryce is averaging 11.5 pts. I don't think he'd be in our top 7, so not many minutes with us.

Dec 31, 2022 05:24 PM #6

Trepidation. KU often seems to have trouble with OSU. They stayed with UConn earlier, losing by 10. Away game.

Dec 31, 2022 05:45 PM #7

Great day for sports. Trying to watch like 4 different things right now.

Let's go Jayhawks

Dec 31, 2022 05:58 PM #8

My disdain for Alabama and the SEC supersedes my dislike for KState so I'm hoping KState can win.

Texans really need to expand their sports interests. Ranked TCU playing on a holiday weekend afternoon and they can't find 6800 people interested in attending a really good home game? Must be sad to be a fan of just about every other team in America, because most teams have many empty seats these days.

Dec 31, 2022 06:05 PM #9

How can there be 4 minutes left in the UK game when its a blowout

Dec 31, 2022 06:05 PM #10

@KirkIsMyHinrich Not sure I've ever watched both playoff semifinal games but I think I will today. I've been doing a lot of channel switching for the last half hour.

What is our big 12 opener win streak?

Dec 31, 2022 06:13 PM #13

@RockChalkinTexas

Four to six.

Dec 31, 2022 06:15 PM #14

I saw future KStater Dai Dai Ames play the other night in a tournament. He scored 66 in a previous round. He's really good. Watched Jacob Pullen's younger brother in the 3rd place game for famed Proviso East as well. He's coached by Donny Boyce and Sherrell Ford who were Proviso East teammates. Boyce played at Colorado. Ford played at UIC and they also weren't the best known Proviso East Pirate, as Michael Finley made up a trio that were all drafted, two were their colleges all time leading scorer and Ford was only 13 points off from the all time best.

Dec 31, 2022 06:49 PM #67

Zach can show us something here that sets him apart, would love to see it

Dec 31, 2022 06:50 PM #68

Foul calls have been meh but we need to play a lot tougher. This is going to be every game in the B12

Dec 31, 2022 06:50 PM #69

Their D is good. We have made a few shots in rhythm but they are dictating on both ends. Another half in the 20's. Sigh.

Dec 31, 2022 06:51 PM #70

Dec 31, 2022 07:00 PM #84

Stupidest turnovers I've seen all year.

Dec 31, 2022 07:00 PM #85

Dec 31, 2022 07:01 PM #89

I don't get nervous until the last minute. I do recall a KU game recently in which a 14 point deficit was nothing!

Dec 31, 2022 07:02 PM #90

Dec 31, 2022 07:07 PM #99

Hopefully the starters get their heads forcefully extracted from their asses at halftime, because these weirdo lineups arent doing it, hopefully we can execute our game and not theirs

Dec 31, 2022 07:07 PM #100

Is Udeh hurt or just not playing?

Dec 31, 2022 07:07 PM #101

Ugliest half of the year. Time to take a comeback lesson from the football team.

Dec 31, 2022 07:08 PM #102

Just a comedy of errors today.
Oklahoma State has forced errors for sure, but we're just not playing well.
Example: Cam Martin as covering the big dude underneath, and let him score. FOUL THE CRAP out of him! He can't shoot FTs! Your fouls are not important in the big picture.

Dec 31, 2022 07:09 PM #103

9 made 3s from them in the first half. Sure

32% team

@KirkIsMyHinrich said in KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread:

They said Ernest- - -just isn't getting it. - - ya think ? -- if he is getting passed over by Cam Martin then there is something wrong for sure

Dec 31, 2022 07:11 PM #105

Giving up 45 means we will need 50 points in the second half to have a chance. OSU with 18 treys launched wow.

Dec 31, 2022 07:11 PM #106

They are 9/18 from 3 in the first half.

They average 6.9 makes per game at 32.5%.

Some of them have been wide open looks but they've also been hitting some contested hero ball shots.

Dec 31, 2022 07:11 PM #107

@BeddieKU23 said in KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread:

Of course a team I think that's shooting 29 % for the year from three- -gonna come out and make every three they throw up. - -Pathetic effort by KU, 11 turnovers , sloppy , sloppy , sloppy. - -Some really Bizarre lineup combinations on the floor for KU

Dec 31, 2022 07:14 PM #108

The Big12 football bowlers are weak.

Dec 31, 2022 07:15 PM #109

OSU already over their average made threes for an entire game. 18 attempts to 6. No wonder why KU is losing.

@BShark said in KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread:

Dec 31, 2022 07:32 PM #125

Dec 31, 2022 07:33 PM #126

At the half we had 9 or 10 TO's, i forget which, but we only had 12 at the end of the game and that's really a key to this comeback.

Every OSU fan and neutral fan who wanted KU to lose will fixate on that block that could have been called a foul but will ignore things like the most obvious moving screen in the world to free up Bryce Thompson for a 3 that put OSU up 64-62.

And then when we play at Oklahoma St later this season that controversial block will probably be replayed giving the impression that we had some huge officiating advantage because the game was at AFH.

The Jayhawks’ final record in 2022: 36-5 with one national championship.

Dec 31, 2022 09:14 PM #301

I fear we may have a season where our guys are too complacent going into games. It's hard to followup a National Championship year as it is hard to stay motivated while we take the best shot from everyone.

Our first half energy level was horrible. Our second half energy was better, but still was not jacked up... just better. The incremental difference made the game score change dramatically because when we have high energy we are capable of beating anyone, including blowing out anyone. But when we come out with subpar energy we could lose to just about anyone.

I hope this isn't what we should expect moving forward, mostly because this team has plenty of talent and capability to defend and move the ball like very few teams we have ever had.

Not sure where our defense went (especially in the first half) but we sure are missing those steals that end in run outs!

I suspect Self will be on them heavy for this performance... as he should be.

But... at least we got the win and these kinds of wins are crucial as we get the "W" while also making it a learning experience.

Kudos to OSU and Thompson for maintain good composure and bringing game!

KJ has such a soft touch in mid-range. He definitely is establishing himself as an offensive weapon. He is playing smart to go right up with shots in the paint instead of coming down and setting up for shots (bound to get blocked by taller players).

Gradey's two offensive boards were crucial in this victory and lead to made treys... but in many ways he is being exposed as a freshman now until he figures out how to get the right shot off for his treys. Now is when he could really use the help of some NBA shooters. Like how he mentioned Steph Curry... he would be a great one to learn from... even watching his tape should be helpful.

@drgnslayr

Even Ochai had some trouble adjusting to how teams guarded him and he was a senior. Gradey is definitely being schemed against, almost every time he caught the ball a defender had a hand in his face so it was a well executed plan. Gradey has an elite shot but he has a ways to go off the bounce from a speed/shiftyness ability. Teams have seen that on film and found some success slowing him down. It's pretty telling what opposing coaches think of Gradey when they are trying to shut down your 2nd leading scorer, who's a freshman. I thought Gradey could have done more of what he usually does when he gets guarded that way is to utilize the back cut for layups etc. Didn't see a lot of that from anyone tbh but especially Gradey who's skilled at this. It makes a defensive player guarding him adjust. Freshman moments. I was very happy with his effort plays yesterday which helped the team win.

It’s very easy to expect more out of Gradey every game after seeing that pure shot. But to shoot that shot he’s gotta get open. That didn’t happen at all yesterday.

So far he doesn’t seem to have as good conditioning as other players. Wonder why that is, or if I’m imagining it.

He forced lots of shots yesterday. That’s fine, we need him to shoot, but the coaching staff needs to find a way to get him open. It sure doesn’t seem like he run off screens like Och used to do to get open. Or maybe our screens aren’t as good?

Bryce T looks like a totally different player now, good for him.

Not trying to sound bitter but that game was an anomaly for him statistically compared to the year so far.

He's been a net drain offensively. Volume guy but not particularly good.

Seems we ALWAYS have one of those guys every year

He is playing a lot of minutes and we may forget he's only played 13 games here. I do see him getting tired at times and I think that's just part of his development. He is by no means a finished product physically. Same with adjusting to getting open etc, games like this help him learn and adjust going forward. Film can point out and coaching can continue to work on it. This team did not move the ball great until the 2nd half and Gradey is sort of dependent on getting setup to score at times and the way he was guarded was disadvantageous.

@BeddieKU23 thx stats man! He's really improved, all around!

He sure has. Really love his progression, he's showing why he was good in HS even though he was undersized. Playing to his athletic ability and making the opportunities he gets count.

Oklahoma State had an amazing first half on both sides of the ball. First i've seen em play this year, but guessing they played out of their gourds.

Somehow they were able to shut down our 3 pt line, AND any inside penetration.

Credit their effort and strategy. Both Wilson and Gradey affected.

Oh definitely they shot the 3 in the first half well above average and then thankfully they came back down to earth in the 2nd. Bryce Thompson made 7 3's, against his old team so definitely an one-off type of game there. Him and Wright made several highly contested shots that were lucky looking. We allowed them to get confident in that first half and that played a part in their ability to make shots.

I respect Boynton, he really knows how to get his team to play well in Allen Fieldhouse. Always sound defensively and coaches them up well.

Yes...

There are two big reasons why teams focus on Gradey.

First... if he's left open he will quickly score treys in bunches.

Second... if he is guarded closely... he won't!

What is Gradey's biggest skill? It's getting shots up quickly with speed and perfect form. That is great... but now he needs to put some time in on how to score when guarded. Develop a few moves off the dribble that give him scoring space but also where he is almost as reliable when shooting those shots verses being wide open. He'll get there. He will get there because he has uncanny ability to learn the physical parts of basketball. He doesn't have that much of a background as a sharp shooter like he is now... he used to be a slasher more than a smooth jump shooter.

Then think about other parts of the game... like rebounding... muscling up on defense. seeing more floor (like Juan does). Gosh... imagine if he stayed at KU for 4 years? We might win a couple more Natties if he did!

I feel pretty sure he is magnetized on Steph Curry's game... who isn't? But I'd like to see him study Luka Doncic. A guy who doesn't need perfect athleticism to dominate the league. He's like the next Larry Bird. He needs about a foot of vertical leap to create scoring space!

Boynton didn’t complain about calls, he’s a classy guy. I like him. Said he wouldn’t want to ref. Probably my next favorite coach in big 12

My exact thoughts! We are lucky to have him in the Big 12... especially at OSU, a school that doesn't have a great basketball environment. I remember a few years ago when the coach was begging students to come to games. OSU is extremely lucky to have a coach of his quality!

I would put money on Kansas NOT losing 7+ games in conference. Won’t go undefeated, but those projections are insulting! Lol

@dylans

We can use all available tools to create a chip for this team. It is so hard to come back from a Nattie and perform well. We definitely have the talent and coaching to go far this year but it is going to take being a very hungry team to maximize potential.
