KU opens as a 3.5 favorite on ESPN. That's a step in the right direction. Stopping the Illini QB, Luke Altmyer is the key; Altmyer passed for 211(18/26) and rushed for 69 yds against Toledo. Running back Love(23) had 58 yds on 12 runs and WR, Bryant(13) had 6 rec. for 64 yds and 2 TDs. Huge game for our guys in black. ESPN2 at 6:30. I'm glad this is a short week. Oh, I think I saw that many students are back to leaving early. ESPN+ doesn't do much to show the crowd, but it appeared the student secton dwindled to about 50% by the 4th Q. I just can't imagine leaving a home game early when KU is playing well.

Sep 05, 2023 03:03 PM #2

@stoptheflop Yes, 50% is pretty close. I don't get it either. Did they have to get to the bars before they closed?

Sep 05, 2023 03:51 PM #3

Tradition says go to the football game until its outcome looks fairly certain and then leave. Tradition says go to a basketball and stay until the end, no matter what. KU is a basketball school, and unfortunately football has a lot of ground to make up.

Sep 05, 2023 04:45 PM #4

I'll say this about this game. - -I'm not nearly as leery of this game as I was, I actually like our chances . I don't think you will have to worry about the student section Friday, I got this feeling the place is gonna be loud. - -I think it will sell out - -well on the way now, and I think we gonna be loud , team gonna be ready.

I like the 3nother line I saw was Ku & 2 - -gonna be a dog fight but I think we got this I'm not that impressed with their QB - -New QB , he is on the road , as long as we don't just come out and flat an egg, were gonna be good.. I'll take our offensive against theirs any day of the week.

It could turn into a track meet but I think we will have that extra pair of new shoes our defense will make that stand and we win - -our key this Season is to BELIEVE - -we got to BELEIVE in this team and our Coach's times are changing here in Lawrence Ks - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG

Side note: I looked up the definition of pregaming and found it defined as I would use the term tailgating. So, I'm using pregaming just to mean talking about the game before the game, with or without your favorite alcohol beverage.

@Crimsonorblue22 It was Awesome!! Everything about the evening was great! Great crowd, great company (my son), great game (in my opinion), great seats, great parking (thank you @FarmerJayhawk !). Even the traffic was pretty decent. Can't wait to go again.

Sep 05, 2023 07:12 PM #8

@nuleafjhawk I thought it actually felt like a football crowd, and I've been to A LOT of KU Football games. The last time I thought the stadium felt that loud and full (I didn't get to go to a game last season so I don't have that to compare to) was Charlie Weiss' first game if that tells you anything...

Sep 05, 2023 08:02 PM #9

@nuleafjhawk yay!! Glad it all worked out for you all. Come back more often!

Sep 05, 2023 08:12 PM #10

Sep 05, 2023 10:18 PM #11

Shouldn't be any reason and I think it will be, BUT not any reason why this game won't be a sell out. - -Not a holiday weekend, ya I know high school football but even at that I just feel this will sell out.

Nice opponent from the premier league supposedly -BIG , and a very winnable game if we don't wet all over ourselves. -should be jumpin students I know will be ready - -we need to be ready, let Illinois know that YES KU DOES HAVE A FOOTBALL TEAM. --I'm ready - - ROCK CHALK

Sep 05, 2023 10:51 PM #12

@stoptheflop I think you’ll see that most the time once the outcome isn’t in question. Been to KSU games twice when a buddy had free tickets and it was the same way.

Sep 05, 2023 11:08 PM #13

In terms of the game, I’m looking for some improvement on the defensive side of the ball. I wasn’t pleased with letting up 17 to a team that only scored more than 25 points twice last season in FCS. Missouri Valley is an absolute murderers row of conference and I’d bet good money they don’t go .500. Hopefully we have another good crowd on hand for the black out, that will be important for Illinois first road game. The keys to victory are simple to me. Contain Altmyer, keep JD 6 up right and win the turnover battle. Do those 3 things and we will have another victory. I feel like this is a must win to get back to a bowl game. BYU, UCF and Cincinnati were all games I thought we could win but after watching us and them last week. We will be lucky to win one of those games (BYU would be the only one I’d predict). We may have to start 4-0 to get there.

Sep 05, 2023 11:43 PM #14

Fun fact KU has a 2-3 record all time vs Illinois, including a 24-6 victory in their only meeting in Lawrence. That game took place in 1892 before basketball made it to the university.

Sep 06, 2023 01:03 AM #15

@kjayhawks I think we beat all 3. They won’t get better throughout the year. G5 schools can compete with the P5 usually in their first strings but they just don’t have the depth to deal with injuries that come up. Cincy, especially after losing a ton to the portal, could have a really rough second half.

I agree I think we at least 2 out of the 3. I see u beating BYU & Cinn - -might have some trouble with UCF. BYU was lucky to win and even at that only put up 14 points in the win. - -I still think our team is going to surpris some people

Sep 06, 2023 02:25 AM #17

Was listening to an Illinois podcast. They was talking a lot about the KU offense & Jalen. Talking about how they feel a big key was being able to get into the KU backfield, trying to put pressure on Jalen.

They it is a must, saying that they can not allow Jalen time back there and go through all his reads, talking about going to have to have an attacking defense. Another thing is they feel they are going to really establish their running game do a much better job running the ball as their two backs only combined for 88 yards rushing against Toledo. They said they have to control the ball , keep Jalen and the KU offense off the field, use time consuming drives cause they said KU is gonna put up points , saying that Jalen could still get 300 yards passing. - Just hope to get pressure on Jalen maybe get a strip fumble saying turnovers are going to big. Hoping maybe get a strip , maybe pressure get a flutter pass for INT.

Saying that looks like their best defender is going to be out and how the defense is going to have to step up - Gonna be interesting

Sep 06, 2023 02:30 AM #18

OK going to make my prediction for Friday, I DO think we will run the ball, if we can get our run game going, get some RPO'S then i think we can be good. We have got to get it established though so they just can't tee off on Jalen. - -But my prediction was pretty close last week - -see how it goes this week . I'm going to say KU 38 - -Illinois - -31 - -we shall see.

Like they said on their pod cast Illinois doesn't want to get into a track meet with Ku. Illinois just not bult for that , that's why they are saying they have to control the clock and keep KU offense on the side lines. --ROCK CHAL ALL DDAY LONG BABY

@FarmerJayhawk I absolutely plan on it. And now I know where to park!

Sep 06, 2023 03:37 PM #20

@FarmerJayhawk I know Satterfield struggled at Louisville, but I still think that was a good hire for Cincy. I do think it will be interesting to monitor them as the season goes on.

@FarmerJayhawk @jayballer67 i hope y’all are right

Sep 07, 2023 03:54 PM #22

Sep 07, 2023 06:19 PM #26

@Crimsonorblue22 Speaking of new leaves - I think somewhere down the line I've at least mentioned that my (now 32 year old) son graduated from K-State. He was never into sports, so he didn't care AT ALL about my obsession with KU. When I say he wasn't into sports - he lived one block from the football stadium in Manhattan. ONE block. He never went to a single game.

Friday night, he's singing the Alma Mater song, the Rock Chalk chant, he's waving the wheat after every score. My jaw was on the ground. And he was INTO the game. Jumping up - fist in the air on good (or questionable) plays. I didn't know what was going on. But it was one of the best sports nights of my life.

Sep 07, 2023 06:32 PM #27

@nuleafjhawk so much fun! Imagine AFH! šŸ’™šŸŒ¾ā¤ļø

@nuleafjhawk I'm so happy you didn't give up and tried again.

Sep 07, 2023 07:56 PM #29

@Crimsonorblue22 Lol - that's what I told him - if I can score some tickets sometime!!

Sep 07, 2023 10:44 PM #30

Our defense needs to stand up make a statement, show progress that teams aren't just going to be able to run at will against us anymore. Which I think they have made progress , now time to show it, Lance talking how this was probably the most physical camp he has ever Coached. Wanted them more physical. Big Challenge time to show.

You know , I know everyone knows I've heard off their podcasts, read off there message boards they want to try and run the ball , run the ball down KU's throats. Time consuming drives keep Jalen and the offense on the sidelines. saying they don't want to get in a track meet /shoot out with KU's offense. Smart strategy. They think they have the advantage against our defense time to show they are wrong show progress

Gonna be interesting hope fans show up strong, I think we gonna be pretty full. - -ROCK CHALK

Sep 08, 2023 11:30 AM #31

I sure wish JD would have been able to operate a couple of series last week to get his game legs back. Last year KU suffered from slow starts on offense and defense so KU was often/always playing catch-up. In the bowl game, KU was down 31-7 early in the second Q and down 31-13 at the half. I sure hope for a fast start on offense that will at least offset the typical slow start on defense.

Sep 08, 2023 12:56 PM #32

I don't know, hope I'm wrong but starting to get this sick feeling that Jalen will be very limited in his snaps tonight. -- - -hope I'm wrong , Jaason a dam good back up but with this game just think e need Jalen - -and we need a lot of Jalen to have a chance, just kinda feel like he still has a ways to gol, hopefully I'm wrong

Sep 08, 2023 02:44 PM #33

@jayballer67 If Jason Bean plays a lot of snaps, I sure hope he's learned from the Missouri St game not to throw into good coverage; that tendency will eventually be costly, especially against a good defense like Illinois.

Bean has thrown into coverage for years, he's not learning and decisions like that are why he's the back up and not starting.

@Texas-Hawk-10 right dude is a 6th year player, that’s who he is at this point. Still maddening they had him try the two point conversion in the bowl game with Jalen on fire.

Sep 08, 2023 11:02 PM #38

Kickoff gettin close guys, this isn't going to be a cake walk. w just have to continue to progress, tonight is big, I said before, tonight we have to step up on the defensive side of the ball be able to stop the run.

Illinois gonna try and run it down our throat , keep our offense off the field- -they want time consuming drives. Yet we have to respect Altmeyer running , he lead them in their rushing against Toledo with 69 yards
.

seen this on a betting pod cast - -their QB had some success last week but only has a total of I think it was 92 attempts , and has been intercepted 4 times in very limited time- -got to get some pressure but respect his running at the same time

Let's go take this. got a feeling Booth will be jumpin the sudents are ready - -Black out - - giving a rally towel to the first ten thousand - hopefully be fun - -be loud - - ROCK CHALK BABY - -LET'S DO THIS

My first view of the "black Unis" but they have a lot of brown coloration instead of stark black. The sun was shining on them when I saw them. Maybe they will be more black under the lights.

hearing Illinois gonna have a fair amount of fans there - -kinda sucks this is selling out

Sep 08, 2023 11:30 PM #43

@jayballer67 Sorry, I'm not at the game; I'm just watching the pregame show.

Sep 08, 2023 11:43 PM #44

I wish they were playing tomorrow because I'd have driven over. Interesting matchup personally as I grew up in Illinois and have always been ready to jump on the Illini bandwagon should they ever put it all together. They did once making the Rose Bowl and then got torched by UCLA. Not many exciting moments, so of course KU has one upped them with the magical season in 2008. Don't worry, not secretly hoping for an Illini win. It just wouldn't suck as bad as losing to someone else.

Of course the other coach in this one was a Badger coach and fairly successful too. He coached Russell Wilson there and was two hail mary losses in back to back weeks from being undefeated in that season.

Exciting matchup for sure.

Sep 08, 2023 11:44 PM #45

Daniels first pass a bullet for 1st down.

Sep 08, 2023 11:54 PM #46

Sep 08, 2023 11:54 PM #47

Nice start to this big game

Sep 08, 2023 11:55 PM #48

Look SO MUCH better with Daniels out there. Good grief that guy is smooth.

Sep 08, 2023 11:56 PM #49

Nice to see Jalen come out and not force anything a good steady drive for 6. Neal’s fumble the only hiccup.

Sep 08, 2023 11:59 PM #50

@wissox I grew up an Illinois fan (Tony Eason, Jeff George era), but I've lived in kansas longer than IL at this point.

Sep 09, 2023 12:00 AM #51

@DanR I was trying to think of his name, I think it might have been Tony Eason that led them to that Rose Bowl.

Sep 09, 2023 12:02 AM #52

Eason played for the Patriots when the Bears creamed them in superbowl XX

Sep 09, 2023 12:02 AM #53

Very nice start for the defense

Sep 09, 2023 12:06 AM #54

Cubs get shut out, Sox getting no hit through 6, Illini losing, shaping up to be an epic day in Chicago sports.

Sep 09, 2023 12:18 AM #60

So far, so great!

Sep 09, 2023 12:18 AM #61

Very impressive first quarter so far, especially the defense and how much they've been in the backfield tonight. This is a good Illinois team, maybe not as good as the Duke team KU played last year, but Illinois should make a bowl this year.

Sep 09, 2023 12:22 AM #62

Just saw in Instagram Bill Self saying "This is the best Kansas team we have ever seen". But back to the game.

Sep 09, 2023 12:24 AM #63

Sep 09, 2023 12:26 AM #64

Sep 09, 2023 12:40 AM #65

Uh so I'm liking this athletic Defensive Line.

He drove his helmet right into him @Texas-Hawk-10. I know we see things with Jayhawks slant, but I really don't know how it can be argued we got screwed on that play. Sounds like I'm against you tonight! Black uni's no! Targeting, good call!

That targeting was a bad call. Booker executed a perfect form tackle. Booker had his head turned and hit with his shoulder and side of his head. That hit is literally how we teach kids to tackle in middle school.

I just watched it slowed down. I don't get what you're all saying.

Sep 09, 2023 02:16 AM #124

let the make up calls commence

@Texas-Hawk-10 Where was his head turned? Which side because I wasn't shown a replay that showed he turned it. I just saw him drive his helmet right into his midsection.

Left side of Booker's helmet is what made contact woth Altmeyer's ribs, not the crown.

Sep 09, 2023 02:17 AM #126

another terrible call

Sep 09, 2023 02:18 AM #127

hit the locker rooms, refs

Sep 09, 2023 02:18 AM #128

@Texas-Hawk-10 You didn't answer me. How could you see that? I just went back slowed it down frame by frame and don't see how you can say that.

Sep 09, 2023 02:18 AM #129

@wissox I saw a guy make a textbook tackle too. You think he was trying to hurt the QB or tackle him?

You can't see the left Jayhawk logo when Booker hit because that's what hit the QB. If he led with the crown, you'd be able to see both logos from the backside view. That was a clean hit.

Sep 09, 2023 02:20 AM #131

@DanR I don't think he was trying to hurt him. Obviously don't agree with what ya'll saying, but it's ok, we're kicking tail here and the call doesn't matter.

I'm also going to trust the judgment of Andre Ware because he was a QB and I hear him weekly calling Texans games on the radio and is a very pro QB announcer since he was a Heisman winning QB.

Sep 09, 2023 02:22 AM #133

@Texas-Hawk-10 If the logo hit which is on the side of the helmet you'd be able to see the logo on the other side, right?

Sep 09, 2023 02:22 AM #134

@Texas-Hawk-10 They'll review the 1/2 game disqualification, and I'll be shocked if he isn't cleared to play

The call does matter because KU lost their best pass rusher when Illinois is going to be doing a lot of passing the rest of the game.

Sep 09, 2023 02:22 AM #136

Better wake back up here, went from a romping to now a game especially if they score here

@kjayhawks said in Pregaming Illinois:

The receiver didn't duck or lower his head, this was a legit call unlike the Booker call.

Sep 09, 2023 02:34 AM #145

Here we go again. I mean I don't like this call much, but why not just wrap your arms around the dude and tackle him? This habit of trying to knock a guy to kingdom come is dangerous and stupid.

Sep 09, 2023 02:36 AM #146

He didn't make the end zone on that 2 point did he?

Fell on the goal line. Only the tip of the ball only has to reach to very front of the goal to break the plane.

Sep 09, 2023 02:38 AM #149

@Texas-Hawk-10 he definitely ducks his head to me. Accountability has to start for the stripes at some point.

Sep 09, 2023 02:39 AM #150

@Texas-Hawk-10 Here's what bugs me about what you said. You said Andre Ware agreed with you, therefore I'm wrong because I'm obviously not as knowledgable as Andrew Ware. THE REFEREES WATCHED IT TOO AND SAID IT WAS TARGETING. I could say the same thing to you. You know more than the referees? I doubt it.

You see how much I'm defending the Booker play so I'm not blindly siding with the refs, but that Bryant call was a good call amd the right call. His head dropped because he sunk his hips to try a juke.

Sep 09, 2023 02:41 AM #152

@Texas-Hawk-10 it was targeting because he dropped his head which you just admitted so are we arguing about lol

Sep 09, 2023 02:43 AM #153

His entire body dropped, not just the head. Lowering your head in this context of targeting means that a player only lowers his head, not his entire body.

Sep 09, 2023 02:44 AM #155

And another official blunder first down by 2 yards smh this crew should be fired immediately following the game.

I'm not saying I know than the refs, but I am saying that they do screw calls regularly even with replay, like they just did with the Hishaw first down.

Sep 09, 2023 02:47 AM #159

Fuck these Big 10 refs tonight!!!

Sep 09, 2023 02:48 AM #160

Looking the refs are just making sure everyone didn’t turn it off. This fucking ludicrous at this point all accounts

Sep 09, 2023 02:49 AM #161

Seems like everything in the 2nd half has gone against KU. 🤬

The only reason Illinois is in the game is due to the targeting calls.

Sep 09, 2023 02:55 AM #167

I expected some penalty there on us. Shocking, if anyone is there feel free to throw your drink at the refs on their way out!

Sep 09, 2023 02:58 AM #168

The idiot ref’s have broken the flow of the game.

Sep 09, 2023 03:01 AM #169

That game wasn’t as close as the score

Sep 09, 2023 03:01 AM #170

A good win that really wasn’t as close as the score shows.

Sep 09, 2023 03:01 AM #171

@Kcmatt7 Jinx lol

Sep 09, 2023 03:05 AM #172

I hate being hard on the refs and stuff but it’s one thing for a guy officiating a highschool game to make an extra $50 compared to a D1 guy that’s making 6 figures doing it. At some point you have to have accountability, I’m been managing for several years now and that’s the #1 thing I push.

Sep 09, 2023 03:06 AM #173

Great win! Just discussing football, not pissed at anyone. If we were sitting around a TV watching together we'd be going back and forth on that issue and it'd be fun. You'd call me stupid, I'd call you an idiot, we'd laugh and celebrate the win. Exciting game, our D needs work still which isn't surprising but they did have a lot of dominating moments.

Sep 09, 2023 03:06 AM #174

Ad Astra Per Aspera!

Sep 09, 2023 03:09 AM #175

We could of had easily another 21 points - -fumbled at their 21 , - - innercept from their 31-- - and a TD called back - -should of hung 55 on them. - - Still won , Big win -- 540 yards of offense --- - -still really big win

Sep 09, 2023 03:12 AM #176

@wissox I enjoy a few arguments from time to time lol @Texas-Hawk-10 and I will get after each but we have a lot respect for one another. It’s just a chat room at the end of day.

vs:

Sep 09, 2023 03:15 AM #178

Refs tried. I hope LL goes off postgame.

On to a tough game @Nevada

Sep 09, 2023 03:18 AM #179

@KirkIsMyHinrich Nevada isn’t good but it’s kinda trap game on the road with BYU coming in after them.

Sep 09, 2023 03:48 AM #180

What is everyone’s opinion on these Friday night games? Attendance last week was just over 41k and up to nearly 46k this week. I feel like if we can beat Nevada we will have a true sell out vs BYU. I like them personally because it gives me Saturday to do whatever I need to. But I also think it’s hurt attendance by a few thousand with highschool football going on, this week you also have nascar running the truck race tonight at the Kansas speedway that may have stole a few people.

Sep 09, 2023 04:02 AM #181

Two things:

1) Never again wear any uniforms that aren't black.

2) Help me launch an investigation into the dirtiest/ stupidest officiating crew in the history of football.

With an honest/non vision impaired crew we win 58-7.

And I really liked that the students got behind the black out. I really enjoyed ESPN's coverage of the crowd; everyone was having a great time. Does any other college stadium have a stupid beer garden? Now that KU has a great team and the fans are back in the stands, may we please get rid of the eye sore beer garden?

"Targeting and making forcible contact with the crown of the helmet."
?s=20

I guess I admire you guys fierce defense of all things Jayhawks, but tell me where this doesn't meet the definition of targeting?

Sep 09, 2023 01:55 PM #186

I was impressed and somewhat dazzled by Coach Kotelnicki's offensive sets and plays in the first half. Similar to what the Chiefs do to confuse the defense. Several times sitting at home, I had no idea which of our players even had the ball. While the second half was a huge disappointment, Neal's and Hishaw's long rushes in the second half were just enough to keep the Illini from getting good enough field position to score. I sure wish Hishaw had gotten one more rush to push him over 100 yds, but 120 for Neal and 98 for Hishaw against what all the media said was a very good Big 10 defense was an outstanding job by the offense.

Sep 09, 2023 04:42 PM #187

@Crimsonorblue22 I was! Had a suite which was very nice.

Sep 09, 2023 05:29 PM #188

@FarmerJayhawk you will soon be mayor of Lawrence, taking DTae's job! Back where you belong!

Sep 09, 2023 09:38 PM #190

been reading Multiple articles and listening to podcasts today. Illinois all over about how KU looked like a really good team , how their linebackers looked slow and how fast seemed like KU was.

I mentioned earlier, I think we are more athletic - -quicker and for sure mor physical. I don't care who you are getting 6 sacks and 9 TFL'S is huge. 2nd week in a row with 9 TFL'S - Newton had 2 sacks for them but yet for the majority of the game was pretty much a non factor.

We are DONE being other schools whippin child - - LOOK OUT cause were comin. To think even NEXT YEAR w have a lot coming back , I like that.

Like the Illinois podcast said after this game the score was not indictive of the game- -KU controlled that game could of/should of ben a lot worse. - - vey easily could of been 55 -24. - figure we fumbled going in on their 21 - - We threw i INT going in from their 31, - -w had a TD called back -from what their 17 ? - even if we just had three FG'S from those would of been 44 - - 24, Like they wee saying you don't want to get into a track meet with this team/

Our QB started out and had me thinking he's not an elite passer but he snapped out of it and made some excellent passes and when he takes off running he becomes truly special.

Daniels is certainly a much better passing QB than Bean, but I give a lot of credit to our receivers on those bullet passes that don't seem to be catchable mid-flight.

Sep 10, 2023 04:40 PM #194

I thought JD looked pretty darn good for missing a portion of camp, being throw in the fire against a good B10 defense. He looked gassed to me at times which isn’t surprising, he may not be in game shape just yet. I only had a problem with about 3 plays he made.

Sep 11, 2023 02:15 PM #195

Such a terrifically hot start by both the offense and the defense against Illinois. Hopefully, that is the new personality of this year's team. Our offense ran 44 rushing plays, 11 by Daniels and 29 pass attempts. I'm sure KU ran the ball more in the 4th Q to eat clock, but I still would like to see Daniels run less and throw more passes. Try to limit Daniels to 5 rushes a game and a couple more long pass attempts to open up our fantastic running backs. Poor Nevada; I have simpathy for their players since not so long ago KU was in a similar position. I fully expect a big first half by the offense; if the Vandals(who?) can pass for 313 and rush for 150, it should be a track meet for our offense.

Sep 11, 2023 05:15 PM #197

@wissox I believe the targeting call was designed to eliminate helmet to helmet contact. Seems like in a football game, you would have to detach your head to not make contact with your helmet somewhere. If someone hit me in the stomach with their helmet, I'd probably puke on them. But it should not be a call that gets a player thrown out of a game.

Sep 12, 2023 08:33 PM #198

@nuleafjhawk I agree mostly, but my only point in the argument is that it appeared to me he led with his helmet right into his midsection which is a violation of the rule.

Sep 12, 2023 09:14 PM #199

@wissox Hey brother, I had forgotten about that exchange, but the whole idea of targeting has the potential to really negatively impact games. Because it's rarely called right. I mean think about it - if you tackle with your arms, what's going to happen? You're going to miss the tackle. Every time. If you involve your chest/midsection your head is right there too. It's not possible to have your helmet completely away from the tackle. I totally agree with the helmet to helmet call (and even some of them are unavoidable when you're going 20 mph and flying through the air). I don't want anyone (even K-State or Mizzou) players to get hurt. But when it's not helmet to helmet I think it shouldn't be a penalty. Especially not a miss half a game penalty. Just my opinion.

Sep 12, 2023 10:42 PM #200

We lost the appeal. They're out first half.
