Manhattan Jaspers, Who?
Nov 10, 2023 01:51 PM #1

Named Manhattan College, but located in the Bronx. Fewer students, 3200 than my high school back when it was only Soph-Sr. Leading scorer Rouzan is 6'8", the rest of the starters are guards. The only other big is a freshman from China, 6'9". So, I'm curious how Dickinson will approach this game. Even Coach mentioned after the NC Central game that he thought Dickinson would have (should have?) played more in the post. I like that KU schedules these schools; I enjoy looking up the school and trying to figure out what's a Jasper. I'm looking forward to AZ playing well against Duke, then watching our guys get better.

Nov 10, 2023 01:57 PM #2

First half of Arizona Duke should be fun before the KU game starts.

With the post thing it's tough cause KJ has been mostly playing in the post. We are essentially playing two bigs but Hunter is the 4 offensively. I think this is the way it has to be.

Nov 10, 2023 02:04 PM #3

So I never knew there was another college in Manhattan, always just thought KState was there.

I would not want to get caught in the Bronx section of Manhattan KS.

OK, now that's interesting: Dickinson plays the 4 on the offensive end and 5 on defense. Then, we should see more Parker Braun if he continues to play well and less KJ. But on the defensive end, KJ would seem to be the better defender at the 4. Oh my, what will our head coach ever do? Just as long as we f___ up Kentucky on Tuesday.

Nov 10, 2023 03:11 PM #6

@stoptheflop That's why he gets paid the big bucks and I'm watching on my couch. Very intriguing to watch this develop/unfold.

And yeah, Kentucky is the first REAL REAL game most likely. Should roll tonight.

Manhattan Christian college.

@BShark

I like that switch, Hunter can clearly stretch the floor and be used in the high post for passing as well. Sets KJ up near the basket to use his athleticism and ability to finish at the rim easier, get's him easy basket opportunities and keeps him from having to much outside his comfort zone.

Nov 10, 2023 03:35 PM #9

@BShark do they still have guys out for awhile? Kentucky

KJ struggled in the paint during NC Central game. KJ was fed in the post and elected to lay it in. I yelled Dunk that Shit and I'm sure he heard me (I was sitting at home) because he shook his head after the make. Soon after, KJ was again fed in the post and missed the dunk. Tough game for him, but I look forward to better games from him and Parker.

Nov 10, 2023 04:49 PM #11

@Crimsonorblue22 I read on the Rupp Rafters that a poster expects their big guys to be out; the poster referred to 3, 7 footers being out, whoever they may be. Last game, Kentucky started Mitchel, 6'8" as their only big with 4 guards.

Nov 10, 2023 06:09 PM #12

@stoptheflop

Yeah the missed dunk was odd for sure, Game 1 jitters perhaps. Need him to be consistent finishing down low which his numbers suggest he will, he shot 62% from the floor last year.

Nov 11, 2023 12:38 AM #13

Is this going to be the game thread?

If so, I predict 94-68 KU. Harris with 15 points and only 5 assists. Hunter with 20/10. Rock Chalk!

Nov 11, 2023 12:56 AM #14

We had a bird dog named JASPER. Great quail hunter and once caught a pheasant in his mouth as it was taking off.

Nov 11, 2023 12:59 AM #15

I still wish KU would move the alumni seats so students were courtside opposite the TV halfcourt camera. Students bring energy. Gray hairs just bring gray hair. Duke's seating as Cameron is the correct way to do it.

Nov 11, 2023 01:04 AM #16

@RockChalkinTexas wow

Nov 11, 2023 01:09 AM #17

Hunter is so skilled

Nov 11, 2023 01:10 AM #18

This is such a great passing team. It’ll make up for A LOT of shooting

Nov 11, 2023 01:11 AM #19

@FarmerJayhawk might have a lot of assists again!

Nov 11, 2023 01:13 AM #20

Will Juan score?

Nov 11, 2023 01:13 AM #21

Hunter seems to understand how to defend and not foul.

Nov 11, 2023 01:14 AM #22

@Zabudda not foul yes, defend, ?

Nov 11, 2023 01:15 AM #23

@Zabudda said in Manhattan Jaspers, Who?:

He only averaged 2.3 fouls per 40 minutes last season. He definitely can play defense without fouling.

Nov 11, 2023 01:15 AM #24

@DanR

Did I confuse myself?

Nov 11, 2023 01:15 AM #25

Well this is fun. Apparently if I get to a game stop the flop won’t like me sitting along the court with my gray hair!!!

@RockChalkinTexas said in Manhattan Jaspers, Who?:

Will he need to even take a shot tonight? The way they're looking so far, he may not need to take a shot again tonight.

Nov 11, 2023 01:17 AM #27

This team is insanely unselfish so far this season. Definitely a big Dejuan influence with that mentality.

Nov 11, 2023 01:17 AM #28

@wissox Gray hairs pay for the players. 🤷‍♂️

Nov 11, 2023 01:17 AM #29

Oh my

Nov 11, 2023 01:19 AM #30

@FarmerJayhawk that would be so fun!🥳

Nov 11, 2023 01:19 AM #31

What's wrong with KU's offense? Why aren't they shooting 70% like Monday night!?!?

Nov 11, 2023 01:20 AM #32

@Texas-Hawk-10

Nov 11, 2023 01:20 AM #33

I welcome you to the game, but I would like to see the alums sitting somewhere besides courtside. Don't you like the energy the students bring at Cameron? I know it will never happen, but I just mention this preference once a year.

Nov 11, 2023 01:24 AM #41

Yes, please zone an elite passing team

Nov 11, 2023 01:24 AM #42

Nov 11, 2023 01:26 AM #48

Furphy is a CB Dick hybrid and he looks like Keanu Reeves

Nov 11, 2023 01:29 AM #55

Nov 11, 2023 01:29 AM #56

@kjayhawks who is Nick?

Nov 11, 2023 01:30 AM #57

Good to see McDoswell get in

Nov 11, 2023 01:30 AM #58

Wikipedia: The Jaspers nickname comes from Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., who was a memorable figure at the college. He was head of resident students, athletic director, and baseball coach during the late 1800s. (He is also credited with inventing the 7th inning stretch after noticing the players were regularly getting worn down at that point.)

As to basketball, the Jaspers' most notable victory was upsetting Jerry West's WVU in the 1958 NCAA 1st rd. They have made the tourney 8 times, including 2014 and 15.

Nov 11, 2023 01:31 AM #59

@wissox Timberlake

Nov 11, 2023 01:31 AM #60

Nov 11, 2023 01:33 AM #65

(Whispers) our best 5 lineup is Juan Elmarko Kev Furph HD

Nov 11, 2023 01:33 AM #66

@KirkIsMyHinrich thanks I never really expect transfers from places like Towson to work out. I know they do sometimes but not too oftenly for us.

I'm also low on mid major transfers but hopefully he starts playing better. He is a very good shooter

Nov 11, 2023 01:35 AM #68

Close to 3 halves and Juan still hasn't launched one.

Nov 11, 2023 01:35 AM #69

Our freshman look mature, playing within the offense

Nov 11, 2023 01:35 AM #70

HD with the whammy.

Nov 11, 2023 01:36 AM #71

Pretty remarkable how much Juan impacts the game without scoring - even taking a shot...

Nov 11, 2023 01:36 AM #72

Az 58 Duke 54 10 min left

Nov 11, 2023 01:36 AM #73

Nick’s deal is going from the man to a role player here. Messes with the head

Nov 11, 2023 01:37 AM #74

That one guy who thinks Harris sucks must have gotten to him and so now Juan ain’t shooting.

Nov 11, 2023 01:38 AM #75

KJ not missing dunks tonight

Nov 11, 2023 01:38 AM #76

KJ = Ben Simmons - the passing and terrible attitude

Nov 11, 2023 01:38 AM #77

What?

Nov 11, 2023 01:39 AM #78

@KirkIsMyHinrich say what?

Nov 11, 2023 01:39 AM #79

HD is experienced,

Nov 11, 2023 01:39 AM #80

He's good at standing in the dunker's spot

@wissox said in Manhattan Jaspers, Who?:

@KirkIsMyHinrich thanks I never really expect transfers from places like Towson to work out. I know they do sometimes but not too oftenly for us.

I think Frank Mason should count, but he was just an ex-commit to Towson.

Nov 11, 2023 01:40 AM #82

KJ was quite the diva this offseason

Nov 11, 2023 01:40 AM #83

@Zabudda good D right there!

Nov 11, 2023 01:40 AM #84

@mayjay I thought about him but he would ruin my narrative if I counted him as a low major transfer!

Nov 11, 2023 01:41 AM #85

Hunter is a really underrated passer, missed a few bunnies tonight tho

Nov 11, 2023 01:41 AM #86

They all seem to be able to substitute and look smooth

Nov 11, 2023 01:41 AM #87

@KirkIsMyHinrich I'd say he's good moving without the ball.

Nov 11, 2023 01:43 AM #88

Again!

Nov 11, 2023 01:43 AM #89

Juan is the freaking man

Nov 11, 2023 01:43 AM #90

Golly Juan!

Nov 11, 2023 01:43 AM #91

Ben Simmons didn’t have a terrible attitude in college. I had first row seats to many of his games in Baton Rouge. His issue was he just wanted to go pro out of HS but wasn’t allowed to. I haven’t followed him that much in the nba so I guess people would say he has a bad attitude.

Nov 11, 2023 01:44 AM #92

Simmons also is decent as a cutter and moving without the ball. But he's only really effective as a dunker in a half court offense

Nov 11, 2023 01:44 AM #93

Braun and Timberlake are responsible for just about all of their points

Nov 11, 2023 01:45 AM #94

What the Juan?

Nov 11, 2023 01:46 AM #95

Nov 11, 2023 01:52 AM #104

Nov 11, 2023 01:56 AM #107

I'm really liking me some Furphy

Watching Duke-Zona. Zona looking a bit cocky in the highlights they showed.

Nov 11, 2023 02:00 AM #109

Our starters have only one turn over.

Nov 11, 2023 02:01 AM #110

Once Elmarko looks at the rim he will be pretty good. He's already coming along in other ways.

Nov 11, 2023 02:02 AM #111

Clear Top 6: Juan/Kev/Marko/KJ/HD/Furph

Nov 11, 2023 02:04 AM #112

Nov 11, 2023 02:54 AM #178

Man, 99 two games in a row! damn

Nov 11, 2023 02:54 AM #179

@KirkIsMyHinrich They tried to hit 100 tonight! I figured they would hold the ball. Glad they shot it.

Nov 11, 2023 02:56 AM #180

Okay see you all in 14 hours

Nov 11, 2023 02:56 AM #181

Okay that was good. Looked like Elmarko felt something click.

Nov 11, 2023 02:56 AM #182

10 dimes for Elmarko tonight

He is better with the ball in his hands and Bill let him do that a bit tonight. Obviously Juan will continue to be the guy.

Still playing 4th set in Ames.

Nov 11, 2023 03:00 AM #187

Ole Bill likes what he has. All defined roles this early, already good chemistry, strong team defense. It might be rough the nights we don’t shoot great but we’re #1 for some good reasons.

Nov 11, 2023 03:03 AM #188

We play Chaminade on my birthday!!!

Nov 11, 2023 03:05 AM #189

Don't think we saw Kev/Juan/HD after the 13 minute mark. LOVE that. Team also won that stretch by 5 and probably closer to 10 before the major walk-on minutes.

Nov 11, 2023 03:05 AM #190

5th set in Ames.
Go Hawks

Back to students sitting courtside (for the last time this year), Michigan St is like Cameron in that the first 10 rows around the court is student seating. The section above the student seating is elevated so the alums can sit and still see if the students stand. A thread on Rupp Rafters discussed the same thing I mention and the posters complained there was no energy for most games at Rupp with the alums sitting courtside. Nuff said.

I just wanna say and don't take this wrong and I realize the opponent but I think e have some back up players that can really give us some help for periods of time without a lot of drop off.

1st, I am really liking Furphy. He shows no hesitation , got a nice shot and looks solid. you realize this kid is still suppose to be in High School right? - -Parker Braun is little athletic - -little better then what I thought - -I realize Jackson hasn't been a back up but very solid - - McDowell did ok for the time he was in.
They just played solid , but I'm impressed with Furphy

Nov 11, 2023 03:22 AM #193

@KirkIsMyHinrich I'm not good at math but does that mean we're averaging 99 points a game? What if we do that all season?

Nov 11, 2023 03:25 AM #194

Then it means our defense only needs to be half decent for us to rule the world.

Also, saw someone call Johnny "The Wizard of Aus" and I'd like to express my support for that

Hanni busted this out on the radio broadcast

Nov 11, 2023 03:45 AM #196

Also shout out to Elmarko who had 10 assists and 9 points tonight

Nov 11, 2023 04:14 AM #197

Almost done watching game. Great showing by the boys. Ready to see how we stack up against Kentucky. Really happy we have a legit freshman class. Hopefully we get to watch them develop for a couple years.

Nov 11, 2023 06:40 AM #198

Fuuuurphy!

I told ya'll!

I'm going to amend my preseason lineup thoughts.

PG: Harris

Furphy / Furphy / Furphy / Furphy fills out the rest!

He'll need somebody to guard the little ones, set him up for 3s, lobs.

Nicely done Furphy.

As usual, a downer note or two: We're gonna need to score down low more often with Hunter. Post it, brotha. no more 8 footers. no complaints about his shot from distance, but we'll need him inside more at some point.

OK, first good look at Jamari. Does he have hops? Maybe that's why the Travis comparisons? Not evident tonight. But liked his game otherwise.

Loved the KJ actions. Dunk city. Elmarko teased us with some quickness to the hoop a few times. nice. Jeez, just saw that he had 10 assists! awesome for him. Nick cannot play D. He's gonna get the hook a lot when big boy athletes are in front of him. He never quite got set for his release from 3 today either.

Great all around game from McCullar.

Nov 11, 2023 12:36 PM #199

@KirkIsMyHinrich

His passing certainly flashed tonight. Need his trajectory to keep moving forward because he's a heck of a talent if he figures it out.

Nov 11, 2023 01:58 PM #200

Some random thoughts.

Will Furphy become an OAD? I had read that NBA teams were raving his potential.

I would love to see Elmarko use his speed and drive more to the basket.

Hunter was solid on D in this game. How will he defend quality Bigs remains to be seen.

Can Timberlake improve his D.

HCBS seems to have lost a lot of weight, he is looking good.

Nov 11, 2023 02:40 PM #201

@AsadZ

I think Timberlake will improve his D plus he had 5 or 6 boards. He is one sweet swisher who doesn't force anything.

Nov 11, 2023 02:57 PM #202

Juan will get his props from the Big 12 writers and coaches. He is an elite defender and is magic finding the open guys. I think he will reward us with clutch scoring too.
McDowell is a big guard who excited me with his poise and no fear play.
Elmarko is just good.
Johnny Baskets says hello world!

Nov 11, 2023 03:19 PM #203

Lets see how Furphy fares against the B12 grind. I think he is going to get muscled around, and will need to build up his body another year.

Nov 11, 2023 03:41 PM #204

I sure hope our Johnny Baskets has more success and is a better person than Johnny Football. Maybe we shouldn't hang such a loaded nickname on this young man.

It’s Furphy time! He’s a beast!! Enjoy the ride.

Nov 11, 2023 06:29 PM #206

@BShark Care to pass this along to your staff contact? 25’s a better athlete and his stroke is smooth.

If he learns to attack some he will be a huge asset.

Also, can someone tell Hunter after you hit 1-2 threes to then pump fake, drive and either hit the floater, dunk it or if KJ’s man comes to help it’s a lob all day.

We could legit have Jokic type and I clearly overreacted to the exhibitions as we looked awful but granted our competition these last two games is bad

Least we will play legit guards with uk

Nov 11, 2023 08:30 PM #207

@kuballin10 I haven't seen many positive signs there. He regularly gets beat badly on defense and looked liked he didn't belong on offense against Manhattan. Hopefully he can turn things around but early returns are rough.

Nov 11, 2023 08:38 PM #208

Thankfully he's the 7th or 8th guy so it doesn't matter too much.

Nov 11, 2023 09:05 PM #209

@BShark I share your assessment

Nov 11, 2023 09:32 PM #210

@BShark Yeah furphy and Braun need to be first off the bench. Jamari honestly should next and Timberlake spot minutes until he proves something.

He had a legit dunk or two last year and we thought he was more athletic than he appears to be

Nov 11, 2023 10:08 PM #211

Lets let it breathe. Position battles are won at practice. Im sure it will shake out.

For sure, there is a reason Elmarko is starting. Glad he showed out a bit I think he can be special.

Nov 12, 2023 12:43 AM #213

@BShark I think so too. Glad he got into the starting 5 early. We may not feel short-staffed by end of the season if our post-season form gels early.

Dickinson is KU's best player right now. Elmarko Jackson has the highest ceiling of anybody on KU. There's a reason why many 2024 mock drafts have him as a potential lottery pick.

Nov 12, 2023 01:21 AM #215

@Texas-Hawk-10 I disagree, I think Mccullar is KU's best player right now. But it's hard to imagine success without either of them.

Nov 12, 2023 03:47 AM #216

It’s a positive to have an argument on who the best player is on the team. Great teams like 08 and 22 championships you literally could’ve said 3 or 4 different guys were the best and you wouldn’t have been wrong on a given night.

Nov 12, 2023 03:53 AM #217

If Kev keeps shooting 42% from 3 on 6 attempts per game he’s going to win the Naismith (he won’t buuuuut could you imagine??)

Nov 12, 2023 04:05 PM #218

@FarmerJayhawk His jumper looks much more in flow and smooth this season. Last season he had a hitch in it, he’s put some hours in the gym this offseason no question.
