KU will be without LT Dominic Puni who has decided to opt out to focus on preparing for the NFL where he's projected as a guard who should go sometime in day 2 of the NFL Draft (2nd or 3rd round).

I think Devin ends up entering the Draft . Well no maybe I'd say mor like 50/50 right now. A lot of things to consider, Average life span in the NFL for running backs is very shorts-- -3 years they said I think in a way he might wanna come back though and become the all time rushing leader being a home town kid, has been mentioned before. Can't blame him either way

It is kind of sad in a way, however, I will not be surprised if true RB position is ultimately gone from NFL.

I can see this position evolve into a hybrid TE position.

The UNLV defense gives up 6.1 yds per play and 35.5 pts per game in the Mountain West. What? KU's offense is going to need oxygen in the huddle. My home is full of relatives, so I won't be at the game. I really hope losing Coach Kotelnicki won't dampen KU's offense. Score quickly, score often and rout the Rebs. KU needs a bowl win.

DE Austin Booker is also not with KU in Phoenix.

I hear Booker is very likely going to the NFL and has already moved out. At any rate, I don't think he's coming back to Kansas.

Understand , partially anyways but you also have to consider that these kids that are sitting out of the bowl , they too was a part of that team that worked hard to get where they are at. An individual has to realize that these kids that are sitting out of these bowl games - -those kids are having to think about their future on down the line - -most , well really all that sit out are players that are trying to prepare for their future.

The NFL , I bet if you were to ask the kids that are playing in these bowl games if they are mad ---feel a lack of loyalty , because they guys are sitting out of these bowls ? --To the player I would say 95 % if not more would say NO , WHY ?- -because they realize these guys are looking to their future. - -The NFL , these other kids they get that , they understand. Are they disappointed that these guys are not playing ? - - I'm sure some of them are- - - but mad? --- no. get that chance at the NFL.
Yes they take that chance of getting hurt , but why when your at the end of your college career and looking to the future- -why gamble on your future ? -- Not only is the NFL for these guys but just like other people - -it's their job , this is what they will do for their living, they just get to enjoy the love of the game while they get paid for it also. Plus some of these guys already are married , maybe have some kids already, they are looking out for their family --their future. -Loyalty is great but also look at it this way. If you were for instance you had a job had been there for some time and you had the opportunity arise as to where another Business came along offered you a better paying job, a nice increase in wages & benefits tell me - -would you stay with your present job because of loyalty or take the better job offered you with higher wages ? - -thinking of your family, I know what I would do- --just saying. Am I disappointed they not gonna play ? - -sure I am, make things harder for us but am I mad- - -NA , I am appreciative of their time here and wish them nothing but the best in the future, they will always be a great Jay Hawk to me

The combine might have resulted in fewer players participating in bowl games. I have no doubt that except for the stars who won't go there anyway, most players sitting out have been told that a bowl performance won't help their prospects. Whereas a stellar showing in the combine would raise their draft status a lot. An injury in the season could likely be recovered enough to do well, but the time after late bowl games is a lot shorter. Can't blame them a bit.

All the fans griping about loyalty won't pay a dime toward making up any injured player's lower earnings if they blow out a knee or Achilles. Fans demand loyalty entirely at the player's risk.

Here's another spin on it. When a player who has transferred out or skips a bowl game for the NFL, that's a chance for a younger player to get real game reps against a similar caliber team. This gives the coaches game film on a player they may not have had otherwise which can help with player development in the spring because now coaches see what specifically needs more development that you don't necessarily get in practice.

Take Caleb Williams for example, how does he benefit or USC benefit long term from him playing against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl? If he played, USC has a better shot at going 8-5 this season. They don't care because this season was already a massive disappointment for them. Playing a younger QB to see if they still need to find one in the portal is going to be a bigger longterm benefit to USC than Williams playing in their bowl game.

I think USC going 7-5 this year had a much bigger impact on their fan support this season than Caleb Williams not playing in a bowl game their fan base doesn't care about. USC's fanbase expects to play for national championships and when they fall way short of that goal like this season, their fans aren't going to care as much. Making a bowl game at Kansas is a much bigger deal than making one at USC.

Imagine if KU basketball enters a season as a Final Four favorite, but things happen and the team ends up in the NIT for whatever reason. Do you really think this fanbase is going to care about the NIT in that situation? Now imagine that team also has a player that's going to be a top 3 pick in the NBA draft. If you're that player, why do you care about a 2nd tier tournament when that result is far below team expectations entering the season?

College is meant to prepare and train a person for a professional career regardless of the field is it not? Players like Caleb Williams make business decisions on where to go based on where they believe will best prepare them for the NFL. It's a different mindset and mentality from a fan and it's always been that way. Rules changes just mean it's much more out in the open now instead of behind closed doors. If I grew up in Kansas a diehard Jayhawk fan, but my career ambition has always been to be a veterinarian, I'm ultimately not going to go to KU because KU doesn't have that program. I would be going to KSU because they're the school in Kansas with a veterinarian program.

Late December football is better than the alternative! There's literally only 3 basketball games today in NCAA. Looks like the game on now is going to end on time so we're not gonna have to ESPNews it to start!

KU is going to be a Big 12 contender next season. We have a relatively easy schedule with only 4 games against 2023 bowl teams. UNLV, ISU, KSU, and West Virginia are the 4 schools KU plays that made a bowl this season.

If KU is a contender for the B12 next season, they'll also be CFP contenders as well with the expanded playoffs.

I sure hope that is KU's last trip to the Guaranteed Flag Bowl. Glad I didn't attend in person. I enjoyed our big play offense. I had hoped more of the younger players, like Cole Ballard would get a late series of play in. Hey, UNLV has quite a punter, Marshall Nicholas, 3 punts-53 yd avg. He would be a nice pickup in the portal if he's so inclined.

KU DE Austin Booker who sat out last night is expected to declare for the NFL Draft. Booker is projected as an early Day 3 pick (4th-5th round) right now.

Starting LT Dominick Puni also opted out to focus on NFL Draft prep work. He's also currently projected as a 4th-5th round pick.

Both players are steadily moving up draft boards and could each move into 3rd round pick territory with good showings in the Senior Bowl for Puni and Pro Day and Combine for each player.

For the 2024 NFL Draft, Mike Novitsky will also have a chance to be a late round pick.

Overall, KU has quite a bit of potential NFL talent on the roster. Both starting CB's Bryant amd Dotson have NFL futures, Devin Neal announced he was coming back yesterday after projecting as a 3rd-4th round pick this draft cycle. Jalon Daniels could be a pick he can stay healthy for a season. I don't know that any of the receivers will be drafted next season, but at least Grimm amd Arnold should get training camp invites in 2025.

I really love seeing KU players get drafted. Especially situations like this. Booker finally got a chance to see the field, for some reason Minnesota didn't play him. Then with Puni, scouts got to see him play at a higher level.

NIL deals help a bit, but I doubt it would be financially competitive with a rookie NFL contract in Neal's case. A third round pick will make about $1 million per season on a rookie contract and a 7th round pick will make about $775k per season on a rookie deal.

Neal is definitely taking a financial risk by coming back next season because his NIL valuation is currently about $400k.

During penalty breaks (so about 2 1/2 hours) the announcers were very complimentary of the KU program and the direction that LL has us heading.

My question is - did they talk like this when Mangino had us playing well and took us to bowl games in the day?

Is the program better or do we just have better players? I feel like the community embraces this team and definitely has better support from the A.D.

During penalty breaks (so about 2 1/2 hours) the announcers were very complimentary of the KU program and the direction that LL has us heading.

My question is - did they talk like this when Mangino had us playing well and took us to bowl games in the day?

Is the program better or do we just have better players? I feel like the community embraces this team and definitely has better support from the A.D.

Bottom line - what's different about us now and 25-ish years ago?

Mangino was an asshole of a human being who pissed a lot of people off around campus including high level donors and people in the AD's office. He also didn't make many friends in the media either. There's a reason why other schools weren't sniffing around Mangino when he broke through here. There's also a reason why KU couldn't secure the funding for stadium renovations even after the Orange Bowl and it was because of how much people hated Mangino as a person. Lew Perkins not being well liked either didn't help when it came to fund raising.

Leipold is a much more personable and well liked person which is why he's viewed much more favorably than Mangino ever was.

@nuleafjhawk the program is much better the Orange bowl season was a one hit wonder after the way things went down. LL has an excellent chance at not only a bowl game for a third consecutive year for the first time in school history but this team at this moment with whom we know is returning could be playing for a conference championship next year.

I know a guy that works in Lawrence and for the company Christmas party they had KU basketball players there. He said they cut them each 10k checks for about an hour of talking and taking pictures.

Basketball players at KU will generally earn more than the football players because that pie is much smaller. Even the walk on players will make quite a bit more in NIL than most of the football players will.

He's still the all time win percentage leader in the BIG. Leipold I think won 6 DIII championships at UW Whitewater. He knows how to win and I believe the ceiling is high. I'm pretty hyped, more than I remember being with Mangino.

If there were actual numbers put out there that is something differently entirely but I do not believe on3 at all. For example Kevin's NIL value before the season was set under $100,000. A laughable number. They since increased it to around 800k.

I would agree that Neal is taking a risk though, I was surprised to hear that he is coming back.

That is correct. He won 6 national championships in 8 years there. While that program is historically pretty good, those are also their only national titles, so Lance is the only coach to ever do that there.

The future of Kansas football is very bright as long as he sticks around. He is 59 though, so we don't have too much longer, and need to nail the next hire as well.

That's why I used valuation and not what he actually earns because I don't think we know the full amount someone like Devin Neal is actually earning in NIL.

on3 isn't meant to be a place where you find out how much a player actually earns because there are variables involved in that such as what school a player goes to that on3 doesn't necessarily factor in.

A star player for Kansas basketball is going to be pulling in high 6 figure or better in NIL money. We know Dickinson is likely making $2 million in NIL based on his recruitment. $100k is about the minimum I would expect any men's KU basketball player to be pulling in simply because they play for Kansas basketball. I'd be very surprised if Dillon Wilhite, Patrick Cassidy, or Wilder Evers aren't making 6 figures in NIL just being on the team.

Devin Neal coming back I'm going to guess is largely based on him being a local kid and wanting to take a run at a Big 12 title next season. He'll also likely be on a lot of watch lists next season so he could possibly significantly bump his NIL earnings for next season.

It’s hard not to be super excited for next seasons offense even with coach K leaving. A great core of RBs and receivers to go with JD 6. Keeping him healthy and beefing up a little up front will be the keys.

I'm not knocking him - I love Jason Bean! But he does have a tendency to throw without thinking sometimes.

I got to be honest after watching the some of the other bowls yesterday including the Pop Tarts Bowl. I’m still salty about how egregious the coverage and commentary was for our game. You would’ve thought it wasn’t even a ESPN primetime game.

KU has some players that can either break or set new records or move very high up on some all time lists.

Jalon Daniels if he stays healthy next season, big if, could end up #2 in passing yards. He's currently 9th at just under 4,300 yards and needs a little of 2,100 yards to move into second place in career passing yards. That would also out him somewhere in the top 10 for single season passing yards. Daniels needs 8 TD passes to move into 2nd on that list ahead of Bean.

Luke Grimm and Lawrence Arnold should move into 4th and 5th on KU's all time receptions list. Grimm has 126 and Arnold has 121. Mark Simmons currently sits 4th at 155 so it seems likely that both Grimm and Arnold could get 30 and 35 receptions respectively to each pass Simmons.

Receiving yards is going to be a fun one to watch where Arnold and Grimm end up. Depending on next season, they could end up 2nd and 3rd all time. Arnold is 723 yards behind Steven Sims for 2nd and Grimm is 800 yards behind Sims. Doubt Grimm gets there based on career production, but Arnold should have a shot to pass Sims based on the last 2 years.

Grimm and Arnold could also end up 2nd and 3rd in TD receptions as well. Sims is currently second at 19 so Grimm only needs 3 to pass Sims which seems likely and Arnold needs 7 which is less likely, but still possible.

The player that could sit atop the KU record books after next season is Devin Neal. June Henley currently sits atop the rushing list with 3,841 yards. Neal is currently 4th all time at 3,077 rushing yards. If he stays healthy, it seems likely Neal breaks that record. Neal will also likely break Henley's career rushing TD recod as well. Henley had 41, Neal is currently 3rd all time at 33 TD's.

It's a lower level all star game that's notnthe caliber of the Senior Bowl which is the one that will produce the most NFL talent. This one is going to be more for lower level pro leagues like the CFL, XFL/USFL. Bean very well could end up in one of those leagues, I just don't believe he has the decision making of an NFL caliber QB.

KU’s Bean set a bowl record for the Big 12 - most touchdowns thrown in a bowl game at 6. Not OU with their high flying offense under Riley or Stoops. Not Texas and the million bowl games they’ve been too. Not the in state football “powerhouse” ksu. K freakin’ U has the record for passing touchdowns in a bowl game in the Big12.

Todd Reesing was a better QB than Bean and he didn’t sniff the NFL. However Todd Heaps was much worse than both and had a cup of coffee in the league based on his HS ranking. If someone likes Bean they may take a flyer on him, but my team only has 6 draft picks this year and they had better not waste one on a backup quarterback!

Reesing didn't get a sniff because NFL teams do not want small QBs. He was listed at 5'11" but I remember he was likely a couple inches shorter.

According to The Ringer, "Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, 172 quarterbacks have started at least 50 games—only 11 of them were 6-foot or shorter. Among those players are Kyler Murray, Michael Vick, Russell Wilson, and Drew Brees."

He was probably also hurt by KU losing the last 6 games of the 2009 season, and having 7 interceptions in those games.

Bean's best chance at making the NFL is probably changing positions to WR and utilizing his size and speed in that manner. Far too often, he forces passes into double and triple coverage resulting in bad interceptions.

I think someone will give Bean a camp invite just to see what they can do with him. Those physical tools are elite. I mean Tim freaking Boyle stuck around for a few years and was way, way, way worse than Bean in college

@FarmerJayhawk yep size, speed and arm strength are god given. Look no further than Josh Freeman of KSU dude was total trash in college but had the 3 listed items and got several chances because of it.
