Tarik Black
Oct 20, 2014 01:02 AM #1

Just maybe

Excluding Covington, Mitchell and Powell, the Rockets would have to make two more cuts.

Rookie center Tarik Black went to camp as the only other player with a non-guaranteed contract, likely to be released and claimed by the Rockets development league affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

But injuries to Dwight Howard, Joey Dorsey and rookie Clint Capela opened playing time inside. Black and Jeff Adrien have impressed with the chance.

β€œHe’s playing his way into playing time,” McHale said of Black. β€œThat’s what you’re supposed to do. Good for him.”

Thank you for posting this. I don't follow the NBA much so I wouldn't know about Tarik if you (or some one) didn't post about him. Tarik Black impressed me with his maturity and positive attitude during his one year at KU and I hope he prospers in the NBA.

Oct 20, 2014 02:08 AM #3

I don't follow the NBA with the exception of reading about a Jayhawk doing well. That said, I am tempted to go to a Rockets game next week just to cheer him on (I'd be in KU Gear.) I will always be thankful he came to KU after he graduated but even more than that he set an example for his bBall peers to graduate. RCJH TARIK!!!

@Crimsonorblue22

McHale was a tough player that was always hustling and he likes similar players. Interesting that Tarik left KU with a reputation exactly opposite of the one he came with...a very positive development that endeared him to KU fans, including me, that were not sure how well he would do under Coach Self.

Tarik's block, not sure it will work

Oct 20, 2014 02:21 PM #6

Everything about Tar spells N-B-A.

His build, his attitude and his style of play. He's a perfect fit, but he also needed the perfect fit with the right team and situation to hang in the league. If he can secure himself for a few years he should become a long-term journeyman player because every additional year adds experience, and experience counts big!

Go, Tar!

Oct 20, 2014 02:25 PM #7

@Crimsonorblue22 The Rockets are the team I claim, although my son lives and breathes Rocket basketball, and he's not sure that Tarik makes it. I would LOVE for him to make the cut because he's simply a great person and a talented player as well.

Oct 21, 2014 12:48 AM #8

@Crimsonorblue22 Couldn't get it to work, at least on my ipad, but did watch a dunk and a post game interview with Tarik. One of his bags has what looks to be a Jayhawk luggage tag on it. One can only imagine his contribution if he'd been at Kansas 4 years. His maturity was a great team motivator last year. (beer)

@brooksmd you should google it, it made #1 on sports center.

Oct 21, 2014 01:04 AM #10

@Crimsonorblue22 Maybe I was in a bad mood when I watched it, but it just didn't wow me that much. The shooter was falling backwards, being dragged back to the earth by the force of gravity, and threw up a prayer that had at best, a 50-50 chance of going in the basket. Tarik really should have caught the ball, and easily could have. Don't get me wrong, recognition of former Jayhawks is great, but it just didn't grab me.

When I search "Tarik Black" I went through several pages and never found kubuckets.

I don't know if that is good or bad. For publicity it's bad, but remaining hidden from opposing school's scouts may be a good thing. I'm not sure if they would ever read forums in their research.

If we were really clever we would create a dummy site, find the IP range for direct areas surrounding our upcoming competition, and then send all hits from those IPs to our dummy site. It would be fun creating the misdirection!

HEY TARIK-show them your stuff.

Oct 23, 2014 02:34 AM #16

Per your stats and checking espn Tarik got a road win as a starter.
And. As your stats show he only played just a bit over 15 minutes of play. 4/5 field, 2/4 FT for 10 points and 8 rebounds-great stats for 15 minutes but with 5 fouls he limited his self. I am sorry I didn't tape it.

Super busy here with kids activities but if I see he is starting in Houston I will go see him play decked out in my KU gear

@JayhawkRock78 keep us posted!

Oct 23, 2014 03:02 AM #18

@JayhawkRock78 do they have one more preseason?

Oct 23, 2014 03:08 AM #19

No clue-but I have to check it versus our HS football and soccer games.

@JayhawkRock78 couldn't be happier for him!!

Oct 27, 2014 05:03 PM #22

Both centers from last year's team made it to the League; good news for KU's reputation as BigManU...

Oct 27, 2014 09:23 PM #23

That is very cool news.

Oct 27, 2014 09:37 PM #24

$507,000 first year, $845,000 second year of contract. What a sweet deal for him. (By the way his school was listed Memphis AND Kansas.)

IMHO, his NBA contract doesn't happen without a year at Kansas.

RCJH Tarik!

Oct 27, 2014 10:28 PM #25

That's a lot of money. For a change I'm confident that it will be spent responsibly

Oct 28, 2014 12:59 AM #26

More coin that I will ever make in a year but good for him. And I think you are right. Tarik has made some great decisions in his young life and the odds seem to be better with him continuing to make good decisions.

Oct 28, 2014 01:28 AM #27

Right on, Tar!

@bskeet Thanks for the link. I hope he has a great season.

Josh Pastner probably would not have started Wilt, Danny, or Joel.

I wished he would quit.

He is giving little people a bad name.

Next.

Oct 30, 2014 05:49 PM #31

@jaybate-1.0 Pastner reminds me of the Queen from misery. LOL !!
