Our next opponent is upon us and now.

Questions arise about our defense in this game.

  1. Who out of our committee at the 5 gets to guard their 7foot 245b center, Welsh, who got 20 against UNLV? He went for 5 more than his season average, put he also averages just south of 2 blocks a game and 7 rebs. I'm guessing we see Lucas in the beginning for that match up.

  2. Who gets the call to guard the coaches kid Alford? He too got 20 its last night , right at his season average. Does this assignment go to Seldes or the combo of Frank and Devonte?

  3. Holiday another guard had 18, 5 above his season avg., but was hot from the FT line.

The bonus is those three players score 58 of their 77 points. So can we stop one of them? Slow the other two down a bit?

  1. Will KU play free again tonight?
Nov 24, 2015 02:16 PM #2

We have no answer for Welsh but I doubt he will be the reason We would lose. It's important to get Parker in foul trouble as he is their double double machine.

Alford is going to require someone's best defensive night, if he's making shots from outside this will be a very close game. The key will be forcing him into bad shots, not wide open shots. UCLA has a high ceiling and they could definetly best us, we are no world beaters. It will take an effort I'm not sure we are ready for, maybe we are after going through the MSU debacle.

Obviously the key to winning on our end will be to make shots, especially perimeter. Nothing else matters, we make shots we win

Nov 24, 2015 03:28 PM #3

I really hope that coach will let them play freely and don't hold back on the 3-pt shooting. Its no secret that KU has trouble scoring inside against L&A and I hope that coach will keep 3-pt shooting an integral part of the offense.

Nov 24, 2015 03:41 PM #4

KU 91 UCLA 79.

Nov 24, 2015 04:11 PM #5

The key is to put the clamp on Alford first. He's a volume shooter, so disrupting him will disrupt their offense. My belief has always been to put size on shooters and speed on slashers. Alford is a shooter, so you put Selden on him to start. This may also be a night where you put Vick on him and tell Vick that while he is on the court his only concern is to make sure that Alford is within arms length at all times.

In the post, I would play behind their big guy and dare him to dominate. I don't know that Welsh is good enough to score with his back to the basket on every possession, even against a team lacking size. He's not Karl Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor. He's a guy that averaged just 4 points per game last year. The temptation would be to double him, but I think KU is better off not compromising the defense and daring him to beat us because honestly, I don't think he's good enough to do that.

Nov 24, 2015 04:23 PM #6

@justanotherfan I thought Vick looked like a man among boys playing in a mop up role. Man oh man, he is going to be good !!!!

Nov 24, 2015 04:38 PM #7

Vick will see 2 minutes lucky in this game. What makes you think our 5th perimeter player is going to play?

Because of UCLA'S Size we will see more Lucas than fans will be able to handle. Hunter is clearly the odd man out in games against better so unless we are in serious foul trouble don't expect him to see more than 5 minutes. Bragg will see his customary 10 minutes or so, you know not enough to make an impact at either end.

The minutes spread will be no different than last week. If graham or mason can disrupt Alford we should pull out a close game. This will not be a blowout by any means, we will play down to them.

Making shots whether 3's and FT's will be key

Nov 25, 2015 02:42 AM #8

@justanotherfan Very excellent post on Vick & Alford Jr....he is capable of manning up on many upper classmen already as a freshman. So between Selden & LV there's 10 fouls to give. My biggest apprehension is we get beaten so badly on the boards that Alford is a moot point. They've a footer & a couple of6'10" guys that play & play well so even though LL is our least offensive producer in the paint, he must play the big board rat tonight. Their guards get back on defense most always so if Frank plays his expected Bulldoggie role, I think he could well have 8-10 boards himself.

Nov 25, 2015 02:54 AM #9

@KUSTEVE

Holy cow, that is a prediction with a pair slapping!

Nov 25, 2015 03:00 AM #10

Radio station broadcasting the game in the kc area?

Nov 25, 2015 03:00 AM #11

NM. Found it

Nov 25, 2015 03:10 AM #12

Good start offensively. This might be interesting to watch how we perform inside and how the playing time plays out tonight v last night.

Nov 25, 2015 03:11 AM #13

Is this the chat spot?

Nov 25, 2015 03:12 AM #14

I assumed it was

Nov 25, 2015 03:13 AM #15

Is that Jamari making a jump shot?

Nov 25, 2015 03:13 AM #16

I like Jamari despite all the ripping on him from people here.

Nov 25, 2015 03:14 AM #17

10 missed shots - 5 on each side:

KU 2/4 RB
UCLS 2/5 RB

Nov 25, 2015 03:15 AM #18

I like Jamtray also. There are better bball played out there. But he does give it all. And a great kid. Met he and his mom at Omaha last March. Nice talk

Nov 25, 2015 03:17 AM #19

I'll take fools gold to the bank.

Nov 25, 2015 03:18 AM #20

What number is Cheick, I can't figure out which one is he on the court.

Nov 25, 2015 03:19 AM #21

Even scoring for us:

3 players with 4
4 players with 3

Then Seldon with another fools gold shot...moving 1 player with 3 up to 6

Nov 25, 2015 03:19 AM #22

4-6 from 3pt

Nov 25, 2015 03:20 AM #23

@Bwag We better keep shooting it before Coach reins em in.

Nov 25, 2015 03:20 AM #24

UCLA Bailed out by the refs there

Nov 25, 2015 03:20 AM #25

@wissoxfan83 anyone think coach self still doesn't want them to shot the 3?

Nov 25, 2015 03:20 AM #26

@wissoxfan83 lol...

Nov 25, 2015 03:21 AM #27

Parker is a big pile of slow.

Nov 25, 2015 03:22 AM #28

@Crimsonorblue22 If its close late? Yeah, his mindset is always the high% shot. always...

Nov 25, 2015 03:22 AM #29

The floor is covered with the brains of Bruins being beaten out

Nov 25, 2015 03:24 AM #30

@jaybate-1.0 oh, it's an old-fashioned trip to the woodshed, alright.

Nov 25, 2015 03:24 AM #31

@globaljaybird said:

@Crimsonorblue22 If its close late? Yeah, his mindset is always the high% shot. always...

Right now, high %shot is the 3pt

4/6 v 3/6 from 2pt

Nov 25, 2015 03:25 AM #32

KU defying the law of 3pt averages and shooting the lights out!

Nov 25, 2015 03:25 AM #33

Let's see if the KU killer instinct comes out or if we let this team back in it.

Nov 25, 2015 03:25 AM #34

@jaybate-1.0 more the merrier

Nov 25, 2015 03:26 AM #35

Time for Luke to take a Trey!

Nov 25, 2015 03:26 AM #36

Seems to me another bail out by the ref...but I didn't watch the replay.

Nov 25, 2015 03:26 AM #37

Bragg fouling like a frosh

Nov 25, 2015 03:28 AM #38

Svi playing HARD!

Nov 25, 2015 03:28 AM #39

Wayne in a zone shooting

Nov 25, 2015 03:29 AM #40

Too much trouble for Parker to run down the court after getting out-rebounded. Why is it that whenever I see the top "missed" recruits for KU I don't think we're missing much.

Nov 25, 2015 03:29 AM #41

Cherry picking

Nov 25, 2015 03:29 AM #42

It's boring to see them do this against Chaminade, it's exciting to watch them do it against UCLA.

Nov 25, 2015 03:30 AM #43

KU running the asses off the baby bears!

Nov 25, 2015 03:30 AM #44

@jaybate-1.0 Love the up tempo...do we substitute to keep fresh?

Nov 25, 2015 03:31 AM #45

Mason lies in the laps of the UCLA cheerleaders, I think he spent an extra few seconds on the floor there.

Nov 25, 2015 03:31 AM #46

Just murdering ucla with transition baskets.

Nov 25, 2015 03:31 AM #47

Alford have 2 fouls?

Nov 25, 2015 03:31 AM #48

@wissoxfan83 i know I'd linger there for a minute....til I thought of my wife

Nov 25, 2015 03:32 AM #49

@wissoxfan83 a friendly thought I hope!

Nov 25, 2015 03:32 AM #50

@wissoxfan83 but hunny....

Nov 25, 2015 03:33 AM #51

@jaycon11 keep on running!

Nov 25, 2015 03:33 AM #52

@Bwag But we all know Bill-recall the one possession MSU game when BG & Svi both rode the pine...

Nov 25, 2015 03:34 AM #53

@Crimsonorblue22 good thing it's at sea level or ucla would be sucking on the oxygen tanks.

Nov 25, 2015 03:34 AM #54

Late call

Nov 25, 2015 03:34 AM #55

Is this a better offensive or defensive performance?

Nov 25, 2015 03:35 AM #56

@wissoxfan83 UCLA is so slow it looks real easy right now.

Nov 25, 2015 03:36 AM #57

Ucla being out-rebounded 15-9

Nov 25, 2015 03:36 AM #58

Svi is a stud suddenly. The Crimean Kid has a mad on!!!

Nov 25, 2015 03:38 AM #59

No Mickleson yet...Traylor, playing decent and back in versus Hunter getting pt.

Nov 25, 2015 03:38 AM #60

Bruins too Ray-ed back!

Nov 25, 2015 03:38 AM #61

Alford II has an even more punchable face than his dad, and that's saying something.

Nov 25, 2015 03:39 AM #62

No need for Lucas to body up on that shot attempt...but it's only number 1 on him.

Nov 25, 2015 03:39 AM #63

Ellis up to 11...how did he get there exactly?

Nov 25, 2015 03:39 AM #64

Welcome to basketball school Bruins!!!

Nov 25, 2015 03:40 AM #65

What Fran is trying to say is that Ellis is the King of Spin.

Nov 25, 2015 03:40 AM #66

UCLA having issues with fools gold. 1-7 Ithink now.

Nov 25, 2015 03:41 AM #67

We've dropped to 5-10 from 3pt.

Nov 25, 2015 03:41 AM #68

Now this is the right way to waste a hot shooting night!!! On UCLA!!!!

Nov 25, 2015 03:42 AM #69

UCLA bigs are making Lucas look good.

Nov 25, 2015 03:42 AM #70

AFH West!!

Nov 25, 2015 03:43 AM #71

@wissoxfan83 wish we were there!

Nov 25, 2015 03:43 AM #72

God we are owning every phase of this game.

Nov 25, 2015 03:44 AM #73

Alford's created a soft team--very soft!

Nov 25, 2015 03:44 AM #74

Svi is our worst % 3 pt shooter on that's played so far at 1/3

Nov 25, 2015 03:44 AM #75

Wow what a performance. I didn't expect this but it's great to see these guys confident. My predictions are Thankfully very wrong.

Nov 25, 2015 03:45 AM #76

Hang a century on the Bruins!

Nov 25, 2015 03:45 AM #77

Might not have been such a bad thing to lose to MSU in the second game. This team looks unbeatable. My expectations might have been unrealistic.

Nov 25, 2015 03:45 AM #78

Second half could be very different. I would not underestimate Alford or UCLA. Too much tradition and pride. This is an opportunity for KU to prove they can put their foot on the throat of an opponent.

Nov 25, 2015 03:45 AM #79

RB leaders:

Lucas - 5
Mason - 4
Traylor - 3

Nov 25, 2015 03:46 AM #80

this has been a real nail biter ....will we break 100 again?

Nov 25, 2015 03:47 AM #81

Damn is that Opie on the floor? Shazam, Shazam !!

Nov 25, 2015 03:48 AM #82

Svish.

Nov 25, 2015 03:48 AM #83

This is fun.

Nov 25, 2015 03:48 AM #84

I like the fact that HCBS let the team open it up from the 3.

Nov 25, 2015 03:48 AM #85

I don't think Svi is a streak shooter, but I kind of like that. Every other one works just fine.

Nov 25, 2015 03:51 AM #86

OMG....look at our offense.....59 in a half?....

Nov 25, 2015 03:51 AM #87

Amazingly, an even more lopsided first half than last night's beat down.

Nov 25, 2015 03:52 AM #88

So, according to Fran, NCAA is "working on" the Diallo debacle.

Nov 25, 2015 03:52 AM #89

Most of the 3's I've seen fall were wide open, feet set, uncontested knockdowns. PP defense by the Bruins JMO ...

Nov 25, 2015 03:53 AM #90

59 in a half is a good sign-- even if it's against Washburn.

Nov 25, 2015 03:53 AM #91

Can someone on ESPN try some rogaine!!!

Nov 25, 2015 03:53 AM #92

@DanR No, that's what the NCAA told Zenger yesterday. It's on KUSports if you don't believe that.

Nov 25, 2015 03:53 AM #93

@BeddieKU23 should have bet u

Nov 25, 2015 03:54 AM #94

@DanR and..... No cheick yet

Nov 25, 2015 03:54 AM #95

Hair on head has to be on the resume, ESPN!!!

Nov 25, 2015 03:55 AM #96

Anyone check to see if @Jesse-Newell is running the live blog tonight?

Nov 25, 2015 03:55 AM #97

@Texas-Hawk-10 Thx. Haven't had a chance to read KUsports today for the latest.

Nov 25, 2015 03:55 AM #98

@Crimsonorblue22

You would have made a bundle at half!

Nov 25, 2015 03:56 AM #99

Maybe lots of shoe turf stuff to be worked before Cheick can be cleared?

Nov 25, 2015 03:57 AM #100

@wissoxfan83

Not this season. He told me.

Nov 25, 2015 03:57 AM #101

RB update:

KU 5/23
UCLA 4/15

Interesting...we've missed 14 shots.

UCLA has missed 21 shots.

Nov 25, 2015 03:58 AM #102

LSU the new SEC stack getting some hype

Nov 25, 2015 04:00 AM #103

TO's...3 tonight. Seems to be an improvement. OR, are the new rules reducing the number of TO's across the board?

Nov 25, 2015 04:00 AM #104

Radio station crapped out. Force to watch the live update on espn website. Yuck. Beats nothing I guess. Looked like a great half offensively. Defensively also. Except last 4 minutes. Trading buckets

Nov 25, 2015 04:00 AM #105

@jaybate-1.0 But they just lost twice. I've seen Simmons twice now in person. Phenomenal.

Nov 25, 2015 04:00 AM #106

The lid went on the rim at the end of the half. Self will have them come out and try some treys, then let the air out?

Nov 25, 2015 04:01 AM #107

Did Alford zone us at all first half guys? And gals?

Nov 25, 2015 04:02 AM #108

LSU is going to be very beastly despite their .600 coach

Nov 25, 2015 04:02 AM #109

@cragarhawk a lil

Nov 25, 2015 04:04 AM #110

So long as Alford doesn't release two for defense, Self will keep cherry picking.

Nov 25, 2015 04:05 AM #111

I am stuck in an Irish bar again watching this game through a bunch Irish wannabes

Nov 25, 2015 04:06 AM #112

NCAA is taking all the fun away from KU Fans who want to make signs for games:

Cheick Please!

We've got the best Ukranian and the best Cheick!

Doug, Cheick your shorts! (this one for Gottlieb)

and of course, "ROCK CHEICK!"

Nov 25, 2015 04:06 AM #113

Self has always been "take what they give ya". I assume he tries to pound it in first. Cause he prefers when they give us that. But maybe he is seeing we have the outside game against long interior teams??

Nov 25, 2015 04:08 AM #114

It's playground rules coach!! We're behind ya on the "free Diallo" deal. Now you're gonna get behind us on "freeing the three"... Yes?? :)

Nov 25, 2015 04:09 AM #115

@wissoxfan83

I know. It's a crime the apparent syndicate crowded him away from Self to a .600.

Nov 25, 2015 04:10 AM #116

Reminder to the Lawrence locals... they're blowing up McCollum Hall on Daisy Hill tomorrow at 9 am. Got a choice spot picked out to watch the annihilation.

Nov 25, 2015 04:10 AM #117

I've NEVER got sleepy during a KU game....until this one.

Nov 25, 2015 04:11 AM #118

@wissoxfan83 this i fear is a tissue of falsities

Nov 25, 2015 04:12 AM #119

Alford's kid is a joke.

Steve should be ashamed. If UCLA weren't an Adidas school his kid would be playing for Cal State Fullerton.

Nov 25, 2015 04:12 AM #120

@jaybate-1.0 He had some nice numbers coming in.

Nov 25, 2015 04:13 AM #121

I wonder what it feels like to be a UCLAN tonight .... wondering if Reefer Walton is smoking away his anguish over the game ...

Nov 25, 2015 04:14 AM #122

We decide not to play D this half?

Nov 25, 2015 04:14 AM #123

@wissoxfan83

I've watched him a couple seasons. He is a guy that can be stopped by ranked teams.

Nov 25, 2015 04:15 AM #124

Perry just messing with them now.

Nov 25, 2015 04:15 AM #125

Bills hotter'n' little sisters rear at our PP defense this half...

Nov 25, 2015 04:16 AM #126

@wissoxfan83 before he played us

Nov 25, 2015 04:16 AM #127

Jamari had two early buckets and now nothing since. Still sitting at 4 points.

Nov 25, 2015 04:16 AM #128

He can't stay with any one even as quick and long as Devonte. The points he gets you he costs you on defense.

Nov 25, 2015 04:19 AM #129

Ugly D... our offense sputtering. Svi is maybe 20% from 3. (gotta find something to be critical about during a 20 pt lead)

Nov 25, 2015 04:20 AM #130

Power move of the glass by Lucas. Sheesh.

Nov 25, 2015 04:21 AM #131

Opie-Opie-Opie...

Nov 25, 2015 04:21 AM #132

@bskeet said:

Ugly D... our offense sputtering. Svi is maybe 20% from 3.

Ugly D? What D?

Nov 25, 2015 04:21 AM #133

If you can smack it off the backboard with both hands, then maybe you're close enough to dunk it, 6-10 guy.

Nov 25, 2015 04:22 AM #134

@DanR said:

If you can smack it off the backboard with both hands, then maybe you’re close enough to dunk it, 6-10 guy

YES. sigh.

Nov 25, 2015 04:24 AM #135

I have no problem with this line up.... one point guard.

Nov 25, 2015 04:24 AM #136

Was hoping that Svi would look a bit more refined in his sophomore year in the system. He looks pretty 1-dimensional right now.

Nov 25, 2015 04:26 AM #137

@bskeet On my TV, he's clearly two dimensional

Nov 25, 2015 04:28 AM #138

Bragg will have knee pads in those tights next game.

Nov 25, 2015 04:28 AM #139

But when the rain ain't falling, I see what you mean. @bskeet

Nov 25, 2015 04:28 AM #140

Bragg's block is probably the highlight of the night.

Nov 25, 2015 04:28 AM #141

@bskeet He's missed a lot of shots

Nov 25, 2015 04:29 AM #142

Alford can be called a lot of things except bashful...hasn't seen a shot tonight he didn't like...

Nov 25, 2015 04:30 AM #143

@wissoxfan83 yeesh... 2-9 from the 3.. not impressive. But he is hitting 2s..

Nov 25, 2015 04:30 AM #144

Svi showing fundamentals right there and followed his shot and not only got the rebound but the basket.

Nov 25, 2015 04:30 AM #145

@JRyman He's feelin it ...

Nov 25, 2015 04:32 AM #146

We need to have a KUBuckets convention in Maui.

Nov 25, 2015 04:32 AM #147

At least Svi is getting a lot of game experience.

Nov 25, 2015 04:33 AM #148

Golden State is doing to LA Lakers what KU is doing to UCLA. Not a good night for LA teams except for the Clips

Nov 25, 2015 04:33 AM #149

Opie wit da rebound yeah! Play him Bill-he should be starting over JT IMO He might even win the tip now & then...

Nov 25, 2015 04:33 AM #150

@wissoxfan83... and that is just fine by me :-)

Nov 25, 2015 04:33 AM #151

@bskeet

His floor game is finally looking good!

Nov 25, 2015 04:34 AM #152

We really need to get to 100 against these dudes.

Nov 25, 2015 04:35 AM #153

Weak second half

Nov 25, 2015 04:35 AM #154

@jaybate-1.0 True-- but he is looking like a volume shooter.. While Ellis' numbers are beautiful... he's sooo efficient.

Nov 25, 2015 04:35 AM #155

@wissoxfan83 Gonna have to hit some treys now to hang that Ben Franklin on em...

Nov 25, 2015 04:35 AM #156

KS State beating UNC right now.

Nov 25, 2015 04:35 AM #157

Good sign. There is brotherhood between Wayne and Svi.

Wayne looks alive again... Not like MSU

Nov 25, 2015 04:35 AM #158

@wissoxfan83

Insane!

Nov 25, 2015 04:36 AM #159

Jamari in for instant offense

Nov 25, 2015 04:36 AM #160

@jaybate-1.0 can we out run vandy?

Nov 25, 2015 04:37 AM #161

@Crimsonorblue22

We can out run most and run with any, but Self only does it if they don't release two

Nov 25, 2015 04:38 AM #162

@DanR LOL..

Nov 25, 2015 04:38 AM #163

This appears to be one of our better FT teams.

Nov 25, 2015 04:40 AM #164

Wow what a brick from JT...

Nov 25, 2015 04:41 AM #165

love the chant making the trip from AFH to Maui..

Nov 25, 2015 04:41 AM #166

Aaron Miles on the bench.

Nov 25, 2015 04:42 AM #167

That was Jaybate twirling the fire sticks

Nov 25, 2015 04:42 AM #168

Does the NCAA go to 6 fouls next year with the way they call fouls now?

Perhaps experiment with that in the NIT?

Nov 25, 2015 04:43 AM #169

@JRyman If the point is to cut down on the physical play, then why would they add a foul?

Nov 25, 2015 04:43 AM #170

"If there was any justice in the world".

Translation
