Jaybate, come home!
Oct 18, 2013 01:41 PM #1

To be honest, my motivation for setting up this site was fueled in large part by thinking about Jaybate being in the wind. Where is that guy?!

Oct 18, 2013 02:00 PM #2

I agree. Jaybate, HEM and Dragonslayr and Im sure a couple of the other posters that are our elders and have a great knowledge of the sport were important to me on KU sports. I read what they said and learned about my favorite game.

Oct 18, 2013 04:24 PM #3

Thanks for the effort, approx! Here’s hoping they all come home.

Horrible thing the LJW did. I’ll never forget that feeling when everybody was saying their goodbyes. Been friends with many of them, only as an alias, for about 7 years. It was a terrible feeling having that ripped away.

The lyrics from Don McLean’s epic tale of innocence lost, American Pie, kept running through my head. I never posted it because I’m not bending over for LJW. I never posted it because by the time it had come to me it was too late. The show was over.

But I’ll post it here. A place you’ve created for people who prefer a truly open forum. It’s funny how this situation mirrors McClean’s song. The good old days, the rebellion, and the ultimate demise of a free thinking culture.

That day was "The day the music died.”

This may seem a little dramatic, but it’s not really. It’s bigger than just KUSports. It’s as big as facebook itself. I’m even more disappointed that there are fewer and fewer free spaces to roam and explore. facebook just keeps buying them up.

So thanks again for the effort. I’ll do my best to help make this work. It’s a good thing.

You gave me chills, KG! Awesome! This isn't the first time I've seen the end of an online community (in this case, maybe not the end, but the end as we know it, if the people we've come to enjoy don't continue showing up in the new format). I used to play Spades on a ladder team in an MSN game room. Like this, it was truly a community, and one day, it basically got bulldozed by MSN, because it wasn't making money. Old relationships fade, new relationships begin, and that's the natural order of things, but when a designated meeting ground is no longer available, and that's the reason why a community scatters to the wind... well, that feels like a church or a quiet bar shutting its doors on its regulars, maybe even harsher than that online, because we're all over the place to begin with. We won't be bumping into each other in town. At least not me.. I live in Virginia. I recently listened to this episode of my favorite podcast, which describes a similar occurance, and this was really inspirational to me.

Never thought I would say this...but I miss jaybate (mostly his shorter posts, though).

Oct 18, 2013 08:45 PM #6

Where's HEM?!?!

Oct 18, 2013 08:46 PM #7

Right here .. poking around a bit. Good to see the familiar faces, and appreciate the kind words above.

Oct 18, 2013 08:51 PM #8

Yes! Somebody did it! Yippeeeee!! Thanks to the "creator" :)

Oct 18, 2013 08:56 PM #9

Glad to see this site coming alive. I wasn't a frequent contributor, but enjoyed reading the thoughts of others and occasionally giving my two cents worth. As much as I enjoyed the discussion, I wasn't willing to sell my soul or privacy to Mark Zuckerberg to continue on the LJW site.

Oct 18, 2013 08:59 PM #10

I just created a fake facebook name and page, but the LJW site isn't coming back to life....so I kept searching.

Oct 18, 2013 09:05 PM #11

Well said, KG.

(Hopefully the replies will be able to pop up right under the post being replied upon.)

Oct 18, 2013 09:12 PM #12

Starting to see more familiar "faces". Anybody get ahold of JB, Oak and more that my 65 yr old brain can't remember. HEM and KG good to see you. Now somebody start feeding me valuable KU BB info.

Oct 18, 2013 09:18 PM #13

Hi gang, wrwlumpy here. I tweeted back and forth with Gary Bedore. This was what I said to him today. "http://KUSports.com ↗ died today with the boycott of the comment section. The award winning site loved worldwide is now dead." Go tell everyone where we are and lets get this non-marketing sight up and runnin. HEM, I thought you were dead.
JAYBATE COME HOME.

Oct 18, 2013 10:04 PM #14

I'll try it out. Glad to put my one shilling's worth in. I hope it works at work. Thanks for setting this up! I hope we keep it civil like it was over at KUSports.

Oct 18, 2013 10:05 PM #15

Brooks, was trying to figure out how to spread the word to you, good to see you!

Oct 18, 2013 10:10 PM #16

I'm in the same boat as you. I wasn't a very frequent contributor (most other people seemed to have way more knowledge) but the discussions were always great. KU Buckets has that community feel without the neighborhood watch feel that KUSports has now.

Oct 18, 2013 10:42 PM #17

Well I stopped posting once the FB thing started but kept reading to see what everyone else was doing to get around it. Then I saw the link for this site and jumped on it. Glad to see you made it. Seems like every hour or so another familiar "face" shows up. Still waiting for jb, oakville and more. Hope all is well in BR? Still enjoying the retired life over here and just waiting for KU BB to start.

Oct 18, 2013 10:57 PM #18

Greetings, all. Thrilled to be part of this grassroots effort at keeping free exchange of ideas and informed discussion alive. While I hadn't posted much over the past year at LJW, I certainly visited to keep up with everyone's thoughts and opinions on all things KU.

I do, however, have a good excuse for my posting slack in that I moved back to the surrounding Lawrence area after 23 years away, meaning I can now INVOLVE myself in game days and Late Nights and I can see all the games on TV instead of trying to find computer links or watching game highlights through my mind's eye in text format. Needless to say, it has been amazing to be a part of it all again.

Anyway, as with you all, I refused to bow down to the Facebook gods (or demons as the case may be) and was sad to see such a great community decimated so quickly. But I'm glad to find familiar names here and I will certainly chip in my two cents where I feel I can contribute something worthwhile.

Props to the conspirators who assembled this site.

Rock Chalk!

Oct 19, 2013 12:19 AM #19

Hi all, I am glad there is a place to talk openly, although I wonder if they will monitor this, to be honest I don't care. LJW reasoning is totally self serving and I was so ticked off I decided to never comment again there. Then it hit me a few days ago, in the words of Eric Cartman I thought "screw those guys". I decided to take their foolish FB requirement at their word. I created a FB account with nothing on it. Linked it to nickname and ta-da I followed their requirement but they got nothing out of it. To test it further I put a fake name in, which means to me you could use your old nickname, if available, and you can comment without them gaining anything. It took 3 mins. I even used a email for FB that I just made up for this. We can let them push us out as we stand for our right to privacy or we can take them at their word and give them nothing and take control. Screw those guys.

Oct 19, 2013 12:21 AM #20

YEAH, look forward to your thoughts like I always did.

Oct 19, 2013 12:22 AM #21

I agree 100%!

Oct 19, 2013 12:31 AM #22

FarSideHawk checking in here. Hoping to get all the posters, especially ones mentioned above, from KuSports here.
Thanks for setting this up!

Let's get this thing rolling...

Oct 19, 2013 03:05 AM #23

Thanks for setting this up.
Like some of you I stuck to the shadows, infrequently commented, and mostly read. And like most this past week I've been checking out KUSports here and there to see if all or any of my/our fellow KUSports brethren came back but man has it died. I know Matt and Jesse don't want to admit it but the quality and quantity of post have gone done considerably. They're lucky to get 30+ comments now!

Oct 19, 2013 03:26 AM #24

You can add me to the list of people giving the middle finger to LJW for the mockery they've made the site that I loved. Truly a shame. Thanks for the outlet here approx.

Oct 19, 2013 11:57 AM #25

Alright add me to the mix!! I was more of a sponge than anything. I don't like using "lurker", makes it sound kinda creepy. I too, was very disappointed in the collapse of free exchange. I knew it was going to get worse before it was going to get better after the google questions.

I must say that I work nights and I would watch the clock for midnight so I could get the newest writings on KuSports page. Then I would go back from the day before and read all the comments. It was great and depending on the topic and the amount of posts I could read a few throughout the early mornings. Now... not so much. Comments have died down. Glad you got this going. I clicked on the link once and it wasn't available but I copied the link and pasted it and ta da!

On a BBall note.. My daughter goes to Farley Elementary school here in Topeka,Ks and her teach last year was, yours truly... Mrs. Withey. She is a gifted teacher and doesn't put up with any kids b.s. She is more old school than I expected. Jeff came in to sign some stuff and he brought his girlfriend. The kids got to ask him questions, and he enjoyed to answer them. He is a really skinny guy but what a beast he was for the hawks. He is a humble young man and he loves his momma. It was cute seeing them engaging in a conversation. Jeff would say what he was going to first buy with his big money and then she would fire back and set him straight. She is still teaching at Farley and loves it, we talk basketball all the time and she says there is more to do with shoe makers than one would ever imagine. I won't repeat what has been speculated in the past but lets just say if you think their is some validity in it then you better error that it is true. It's really a sad sad deal for these kids.

Okay, that's enough for now just wanted to say I'm stoked for the football game... You guys going to have a blog set up for games?? I think that would be a great thing, as well.

It's good to see some familiar names and let's keep this good thing alive!! I'll contribute more ;)

Oct 19, 2013 07:59 PM #26

Thanks to the creator of the site, hoping one of the new places grows to fill the void that kusports has left behind.

PS, how do we know that the HEM above is not an imposter??? haha.

Oct 19, 2013 11:20 PM #27

Only reason I even had a fb account is because of losing Woodrow (Dad's Handsome Woodrow) a couple of years ago. I set up Lassie alerts, hunted day & night for 6 days & then a neighbor about a half mile south said he walked up on her porch ay 12:30 am crying like an 80 lb baby. After screaming into my driveway, she & her kids & I ran him down & got him home, 15 lbs lighter but still OK. When she wouldn't take the $1000 reward, I decided to send them a nice Honeybaked turkey & ham with lots of trimmings for Easter dinner. Wasn't for that & trying to connect with guys from the board, I wouldn't look at the LJW stuff anymore period. Hopefully the guys with far more real BB savvy than I like Oak, JB, Slayer & HEM will get on board here & we can still have a place to be a fan instead of an entity. Thanks for getting this site up & running & good luck.

Oct 20, 2013 04:05 AM #28

JayHawkFanToo has entered the site :)

The one thing that has not been emphasized with the LJW publishing the full name is the issue of safety. At one time or another we have all posted our location and some details about our individual backgrounds. Couple this with your full name and anyone can easily find you with a search engine. With all the scammers lurking in cyber space, in today's day and age, I don't believe this is a safe practice. Even Facebook (up to a point) allows you to determine who sees your information and posts.

Amazingly enough, you can still post questions to the weekly Q&A and also to the game blog without FB verification. I imagine that loophole will be closed soon. THE LJW writers cannot be happy as the audience has dwindled to one tenth of what it was and eventually that forum will die.

There is a sense of comfort seeing familiar names in this forum.

Oct 20, 2013 01:49 PM #29

Another viewer of comment section of KU Bball site. Really appreciate this new site. Thanks to those who felt our pain, created this site, and to those of you that shared the site with us. Looking forward to following the Jayhawks Hoops comments this season & beyond.

Rock Chalk!

Oct 20, 2013 01:59 PM #30

waiting

Are you a Red Sox fan for the next few weeks?

Oct 20, 2013 07:10 PM #31

kuwells --- another familiar face. Sorry, not a "beantown" fan.

Oct 20, 2013 08:06 PM #32

Blown, I did the same thing, but those threads are all but dead. I might read the LJW stories, but I will try to comment here.

Oct 20, 2013 09:55 PM #33

Im sooo glad this site was set up, I felt like I had lost all my friends for a week. Being here jusr feels right.

Oct 23, 2013 02:17 AM #34

I kept my name and avi ('Cus throwing down a dunk knocking 2 dudes over), but wasn't a big poster, so no one probably rembembers me, but I like what you're doing here.

Oct 23, 2013 03:14 AM #35

I agree 100%!

Me too, but it doesn't make sense to be out around nowhere. LOL

Oct 23, 2013 12:59 PM #36

jaybate either in deep mourning or perhaps with broken hands from pounding a brick wall. I hope to see him alive and well, popping onto this fine new site most any minute. Jayhawk hoops would never be the same without him.

Oct 23, 2013 01:30 PM #37

Well, looking under the users list someone signed up as "jaybate" about one hour ago. The real deal? An imposter? We shall see...

Oct 23, 2013 01:31 PM #38

REHawk-Am really disheartened that jb just may be Shangiaed over a conflict of interest agreement. Surely he would participate here if he could.
Those writing skills are quite professional, & not those of some old retired, worn out, broken down laborer like us. (me) A true Thesaurian(sp) like that will easily not be forgotten, but after 150 or so of us have flown the Jbird nest, I keep asking myself why is he absent from both sites? Sadly no matter the reasons, the results are the same. Oakville is also a tremendous wit, without the lengthy page after page posts that I am missing badly as well. I have messaged both through the LJW but can't confirm & don't know if the contacts are going through, so at this point it may be Sayonara. What a sad, sad day for Jayhawk fans who live & breathe KUBB.

Oct 23, 2013 01:50 PM #39

HA! My wife has long insisted that jaybate might actually be Jason Whitlock or some such professional writer in disguise.

Oct 23, 2013 02:16 PM #40

She's probably dead balls on right. The amazing historical relevance & incredibly deep knowledge of his posts have professional journalism or tremendous authorship tracks all over them. A talented & clever wit so refined will not just "happen" by itself. Not to say there are not many others, but that my friend is one brilliant mind. Oakville is another witty soul that I truly miss reading & hopefully he jumps on the ship here soon. Have to wait & see if the user that signed up a few hrs ago is, in fact the real jaybate. I doubt if anyone can fake us out of the proverbial jock strap on that one. JMO

Oct 23, 2013 02:48 PM #41

I don't believe Jaybate is a professional journalist. I believe he is a retired scientist from a long line of scientists and researchers in his bloodline. His distinct ability is that he can read, comprehend, retain, and analyze with the best of them. To me, this spells "scientist with the belief of getting better and improving those lives around us as well." If I had to guess a career that the ol Jaybate had (as I"m most certain he and Oak are in their 60's now and retired, if not close to retired.) it would be a background in science, a love for reading, and the ability to be one of the best motivational speakers there is out there today. If I were to make one last assumption, is that Jaybate is quietly lurking waiting for the evolution of board rats to make a change at the individual level so the group can move forward and achieve our maximum greatness.

Just my random opinon though...

Oct 23, 2013 02:59 PM #42

He also is keenly aware of the sense of suspense his absence has created and I can envision him as a Frankenstein creator waiting for the elements to merge at precisely the right moment to unveil his new & magnificent monster! Ha! Man, did I post a line of krap or what?

Oct 23, 2013 03:17 PM #43

...Or perhaps he is "hermetically sealed in Funk & Wagnall's closet" awaiting the fermentation of his new recipe? With tremendous anticipation I am anxiously awaiting the emergence of the new & dramatically improved...Jaymeister! Yeah, bring it on! And please bring Oakville as your ever so trusted second. LOL

Oct 23, 2013 03:22 PM #44

'Professional journalism' and Whitlock do not deserve to be located in the same sentence. Jaybate actually gives a thought to his posts instead of generalized sensationalism to meet a deadline. Thanks for creating this site, by the way, most of the posters here actually have something to offer in the sharing of our Jayhawk thoughts. Thanks to the board for resurrecting good discourse. Rock Chalk.

Oct 23, 2013 03:24 PM #45

100

Oct 23, 2013 03:35 PM #46

I am scared for the return of Jaybate.

Oct 23, 2013 10:46 PM #47

I was waiting for a while to register. Have been a ghost reader most of the time on the "other" site. Need my KUBB fix. Good to see alot of familiar names here. Thanks for setting up a "home" for us.

Oct 24, 2013 09:49 PM #48

Folks, I finally made it here. I'm glad we were able to find this site. I'm hoping for the return of JB and Oakville.

Oct 24, 2013 11:06 PM #49

This thread, with all the familiar names... feels like old times!

Oct 25, 2013 04:14 AM #50

Welcome. Getting better every day-hell, by the minute.

Dec 21, 2013 07:01 PM #51

Jaybate is Jesse Newell's old man alter personality.
