Wow are folks searching to bring down KU. So after an intense pick up game, they had a heated exchange that is all that is known, has anyone ever played a pick up game?? Seriously i remember playing on the play ground and guys getting into it after a hard foul and what not. How is this a story to any extent? The media now days is such a joke, anything, I mean anything to stir up drama. Gotta get those ratings...
I read somewhere that KU was started by abolitionists and then the Federal Land Grant Act for colleges came along and the state legislature was a mix of abolitionists and non-abolitionists that could not agree to support KU as the state's land grant college. So: KSU became the state's land grant college. If anyone knows something to the contrary, I would like to know.
@jaybate-1.0 What I read was that almost all states with an existing university chose after the 1862 Morrill Act to establish new schools with the envisioned dedicated programs in agriculture and mechanics. There could have been some anti-KU animus in Kansas's case, but we weren't dominating the Big 12 in bb yet, so I would guess it was probably just a similar result to what other states chose--to get a second major college.
@jaybate-1-0 @mayjay I know the history of my hometown, Leavenworth, is they had a choice between the VA or a state college way back then and because of their proximity (next door) to Fort Leavenworth, they chose the VA.

@mayjay What I was always told was that because Topeka, Lawrence, and Leavenworth were the most important cities in early Kansas history, those three cities got to choose between the capitol, state prison, and university. Topeka got to pick first and obviously chose the capitol, Leavenworth chose second and chose the prison because universities weren't a big deal at the time and that left Lawrence with the state university.
At least, this is the story I was told by one my geographt professors at KU.
There was already a college in Baldwin. Crazy that that KU even exists given Baker was already 20 miles south.
