This has been mentioned before, but there is hard data now. Thanks to Jesse Newell for posting this on twitter. This is KU this year compared to Iowa State last year. ISU this year is obviously terrible.
What does this say about Self as a coach compared to Prohm? Also Graham's toughness and desire to win.

I do think Bill has done an absolutely amazing job for having such little room for error. Leave in Doke too long, foul trouble. Deciding how much to play Garrett vs. Vick or Newman. Playing a 6'7 guy at Center.

@approxinfinity just looked at roster... you're right, they really didn't have anything in the post. 12-6 in the B12 seems pretty good for that roster.

The big difference between KU and Iowa State is potential NBA talent. From last year's ISU squad, you had Monte Morris. That was it from an NBA talent standpoint. So even though the numbers suggest similarities, KU has Doke, Graham, Svi and, depending on the day, Vick and Newman. That means when KU needs to close out games, they can lean on some big time players that ISU just didn't have last year.

Yah, I miss Hoiberg too. He was great for ISU and great for the league. If he bails on the Bulls, I hope he comes back.

Either way, imo, I think that Coach Self is just doing what he does with who he has right now. The past couple years, we haven't been the defensive juggernauts that we normally are but our offense has been killer because of all our shooters, scorers. We've been spoiled with Frank and DG and Svi the past couple years.
Defensively, we just cant hang with the bigger teams down low without Doke in the game but we can out score them.
I don't mean to look forward to next season already but next season we are going to be so loaded. Coach Self can field a team similar to our 2008 and 2011 teams and not even break a sweat.
Im betting our defensive efficiency goes back to the normal beast mode next season.

If Dedric can develop his trey ball he might stick. I assume you are only talking about active players though. In which case I agree, I have a hard time seeing any of our players this year hanging around the NBA.

Svi is really slow footed and has weak handles.
Devonte has historically struggled against length.
Both are Very good College players but lack certain qualities for NBA.
I agree. So why did these two teams post the same numbers when ISU had less talent? They had a chip.
However... I do see a small chip in Lawrence now. I hope it is enough to take us through April!
Neither Svi nor Devonte could walk on any NBA team today and play. I grant you that.
But never say never! So many players hit another gear once they leave college. They aren't bound by homework and practice restrictions. Once they leave college, they have it all riding on signing a deal. Otherwise... they have to go for an alternative career.
Actually... if you get the chance... catch Frank Mason now in the league! He just keeps getting better all the time! Few people gave him a chance to hang in the pros last year, even though he was NPOY!
I don’t think he wants to go back. He did send his daughter to KU.
Um, why don't we think Dok will end up in the league? I think he could go after next year. Devonte will play somewhere. Svi probably could play somewhere, maybe go back and forth between THE and D. Someone will take Malik in 2 years.
We have pros. Maybe not 1st round draft pick. But some of these guys will make the league.
Doke will try, I just don't think he sticks.

Dok is a poor man's Shaq. He will obviously never become as good as Shaq, but he's a big ol' footer. He had decent low post moves but needs to develop a short jumper. Obviously needs to with on free throws.
But for his size alone and his rapid improvement, not to mention his shooting (dunking) percentage, he'll easily be considered by the League.

He will end up being a very good system player at KU but his pro prospects are limited. This is why he is studying Engineering instead of Sports Management, Communications or the overwhelming favorite of OADs...rim shot....African Studies!!!

According to this article from 2015 of football players from the ACC, the majority have business related majors. I wonder what the breakdown for basketball actually is.
My post was somewhat tongue-in-cheek (the African Studies was nod to UNC) but here is the the break down for West Virginia ↗ that has such a good Sport Management program that 4 players are on it...heck, they even have a Pre-Sports Management program...really? Between these 2 programs and Undergraduate studies and interdisciplinary students, whatever those are, they have 11 out of 13 players. do you really need 4 years to study Sports Management? I wonder how many agents or sports executive studied that in college. What exactly do you do with degree in Interdisciplinary Studies or Undergraduate Studies?
