The corrupt KSHSAA refs didn't even eject the kid. He was also allowed to play in their next game.

@kjayhawks I know, my boys would be out there, but not in high school. Nobody does crap like that in h.s. Shocking.

@Crimsonorblue22 I've read a lot about how this is commonplace at low level KS HS bball. Like maybe not exactly this bad, but not letting the opponent dunk on you at any cost is a thing.

Can't say I've been to any games to know. Lowest level I've been to a game for is 4A.

@BShark my hometown is a 1a school, pretty sure nobody does that. I go to most of our hs games, bigger school and we have several kids dunk, nobody does that crap. Pretty sure there would be discipline. One kid was cussing and had to sit a game.

@Crimsonorblue22 I think it's mostly people talking out their ass, or maybe it was the way it was 20+ years ago when they played.

I don't remember if my HS was 3a or 4a at the time. It's in a pisswater town but the HS combined 4 towns into one school district.

I wouldn't say this is a small HS thing. It's more a HS thing when you have really good athletes playing against kids that aren't good athletes, combined with a coach telling a player to never give up an easy layup. While the coach may intend for them to contest shots safely, the kid only hears "never give up an easy layup" and reacts accordingly. The kid had no play, but rather than conceding the dunk, he make contact with the player.

That kid should have been ejected. The fact that he not only wasn't ejected, but also played the next day (didn't start, but did play) just shows that the coach didn't put enough enforcement on this. That's an incredibly dangerous play that could have resulted in a very serious injury. If his leg had been extended straight out, that could have resulted in a horrible break. If he swings out, he could land on his neck or head. The number one thing an official has to do is protect player safety. If Hanover decides to retaliate on that kid, things could have gotten out of hand. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, but that was as dangerous a play as you can make.

And if that had happened to one of my teammates in HS, that kid definitely would have had to answer to me personally.

@justanotherfan I don’t think it’s a small town HS thing ether, we used to get pretty rough with each other out here in the sticks with elbows and some pushing, maybe a kidney shot but that’s as extreme as I’ve seen. When I was coaching we used to press late in games if we was up by a possession or two. We wouldn’t guard the in bounder, would switch everything and have one back deep to protect from the home run. We always told him no one gets a easy bucket, even if you have to foul but I also reminded him not to tackle someone. Just contest the shot as best as you can and if you foul it better be a foul that he can’t get an and one. The kids I coached were younger than high school all but 1 year, by that time most people know you can’t hit someone in mid air because that’s when someone is most vulnerable, it doesn’t take much contact to accidentally foul someone hard. To put both hands on him and not know that would happen, the kid would’ve been in highschool for 10 years.

@kjayhawks I read an article that said there were more dunks in the 1a tourney in hays than in any other class. Surprised me.

@kjayhawks Sounds like typical low talent small town Kansas basketball. That’s exactly what we have here. Hard fouls and dirty, not making a play on the ball fouls are completely different. I like hard play, I hate dirty play. I don’t know if this was in the character of the kid or if he just lost it in the moment. The biggest problem I have with the whole deal is he didn’t even look at the carnage he caused. Didn’t stop to see if the opponent was injured, didn’t help him up, he just mauled him and wandered off.

If you have a guy that can dunk in 1A, and he gets a steal, he will probably get a dunk out of it. The smaller classes typically have more blowouts, too, just because of the mismatch in talent. A 6A team may have more guys that can dunk, but might only get one or two chances in a game because the defense will be back and set, fewer fast breaks, etc.

The kid that got pushed in this game had at least two other dunks in that game from what I understand, including one on a play just a minute or so before this one.

I was at the 5A tournament last year and only saw a couple of breakaways in the game I went to (both teams had a couple of high flyers that I was hoping to see throw it down). Just not a lot of opportunities because guys were able to get back and stop run outs.

@justanotherfan I wouldn't think there would be as many mismatches in the state tourney? I've seen a lot of 1a, 4a, 5a games. I don't think I've seen many dunks in 1a.

Here's the brackets for 1A Division 2 ↗ and 1A Division 1 ↗. Quite a few blowouts in those games.

A really good 1A team, particularly if they have a guy that can play in college, is going to be much better than your average 1A team with a winning record. For most 5A and 6A teams, even if they don't have a guy that can play in college, they have enough solid guys to keep games competitive.

That's one of the reasons Kansas keeps splitting classifications to try and avoid blowouts. There used to be 6 state champs in basketball. Now both 4A and 1A have two divisions. 3A is probably heading that way. 2A may not be far behind.
