Quentin Grimes as pass-first PG
Feb 08, 2019 11:26 AM #1

Did you know we only assist on 49.3% of our baskets (ty KenPom)? What if we reinvented this team around a pass-first PG named Quentin Grimes? You know, the kid that was the MVP PG for the FIBA U18 team this year? The one who is shooting 40% (35% from 3), not the other kid who plays point and shoots 48% (40% from 3).

Question: can Agbaji and Moore hit a corner 3? Also, would Dedric be more inclined to kick out of a doubleteam if we had Agbaji / Moore in the corner? In the recent past it was Svi and Malik. Why don't we have a corner 3 guy? At least it feels like we don't.

So I know we have decided the 4-1 isnt working and we want more Dave. But ask yourself this... What is the ceiling for this teams passing game and how close are we to the floor?

The biggest issue here is that he is slow. Just can't get by guys to penetrate.

Feb 08, 2019 12:00 PM #3

@BShark

But how many possessions are we looking to push the pace at this point?

This has been a poor team in transition all year. Dotson gets where he wants to go but in the flow of this roster currently maybe the efficiency of having a "slower guard" with the ball could bring some sort of balance to this offense. Dotson seems too quick for his own teammates most of the time. He makes plays when he has the angle or opportunity but I don't think he has the horses this year to go like he wants to. Something to consider.

@approxinfinity

We might have 3 guys if you include Garrett in this discussion that would probably benefit with the ball in their hands. Maybe Self should just go positionless with the 3 and turn them loose to the take the ball when they have the opportunity. I know one thing the weave doesn't work with this group and was very disappointed in our gameplan against K-St on offense. They bullied us for most of the game with physicality and energy. It felt like we started way too many possessions going east to west instead of downhill. I'm sure the refs being charge happy didn't help either.

Hell, just keepin on keepin on isn't working. Something needs to change offensively. Worth a shot.

Feb 08, 2019 02:40 PM #6

Ideally Garrett would fill this role and Dotson would play off the ball some. Problem is that neither are solid enough shooters. For a Bill Self roster, this one is severely flawed.

Feb 08, 2019 03:26 PM #7

Garrett is the much better option as a lead guard than Grimes. Garrett doesn't turn the ball over much as much as Grimes. Grimes as lead guard still allows teams to play off Garrett whereas Garrett running the show forces a defender on him instead of ignoring him.

Grimes just doesn't have the mentality to be a lead guard at this level of play.

I have hope for Dotson's jumper, but you are right.

Feb 08, 2019 03:44 PM #9

@BShark If he gets that jumper going he should follow in the Devonte and Frank's footsteps as a kick butt point guard. He's a better passer than both of them. He's just missing that shot.

Grimes just needs some love, dude is good kid he just too sped up. Maybe Vick being gone will help him in some way.

Feb 08, 2019 03:55 PM #11

@kjayhawks Vick being shown the door sends a strong message imo. Hopefully they play more like a team now.

Feb 08, 2019 04:10 PM #12

For those of ya'll saying Dotson needs to get his jumper going, it's already going. Dotson is shooting 41% from 3 this year. Dotson needs the Brandon Rush treatment to dial up the aggressiveness on taking that shot. Dotson is a dead eye shooter in the mold of Mason, Graham, and Svi, he just doesn't shoot it enough because he can't get his own shot yet.

Feb 08, 2019 04:10 PM #13

@BShark

I agree here. The impact this could have on the young guys could be the message Self has been searching for. Of course it has the opportunity to do the opposite. With the only Sr gone now someone has the chance to step up

Feb 08, 2019 05:33 PM #14

Garrett could continue in his current role as backup PG. Play the hot hand (hot assist man, whatever) there between him and Grimes. Just get Dotson off ball. Is Grimes really that slow? If he was given
the keys wouldn't that give him a little giddyup?

I like the idea that he has the green light to shoot if they sag off of him. I just don't think coaches will dare him to shoot like they do Marcus. Should help Dedric.

Supposedly a players only meeting took place Wednesday, Which doesn't mean we are going to win the title lol but it could be a good sign of these guys coming together thru adversity.

Feb 08, 2019 07:34 PM #16

Corner threes are the highest percentage locations for shooting them.

Feb 08, 2019 08:21 PM #17

This entire idea of getting Dotson off the ball seems a major possible improvement for our offense. He can still attack. The more opportunities to shoot, the more chances to pump fake and go.

With all the questions about leadership, I wonder if in future years this meeting will go down in legend as the famed "WTF, Man?" meeting as the players sit around and wait for someone to take charge.

Feb 09, 2019 03:23 AM #19

@mayjay Who called this meeting? Q? Dot? Dedric? Why the hell are we all here? lmao

Feb 09, 2019 04:22 AM #20

I'd guess Lightfoot.

Feb 09, 2019 06:10 AM #21

@approxinfinity I thought the same thing - no joke! - not too long ago.... The guy is used to having his hands on the ball. He just looks out of sorts playing off it. But is he quick enough?

Feb 09, 2019 10:26 AM #22

@Marco Maybe the added confidence Q would gain from being the PG would be all he needs. Devon has show he has some marksmanship. At this point in the debacle, no reason not to try this.

Wasn't that Vick?

Feb 10, 2019 04:24 PM #24

Svi, now och

Feb 10, 2019 04:26 PM #25

Doesn’t dot hit some there too?

Feb 10, 2019 04:43 PM #26

@Crimsonorblue22 maybe Ochai will take the role. I don't think Vick shot from there nearly as much as Svi or B Rush, for ex. Dotson can't shoot from there as lead guard as much as we need imo

The 3 makes in the upper right corner are by Ochai, Dotson, and Dedric. Lower right are Dedric and 2 by Ochai. So there's potential (credit ESPN graphic).

@tundrahok thanks! Yeah that looks great!
