About half way through the 1st quarter.

Carter Stanley came out as the starter.

Liam Jones missed a 49 yard FG wide left.

Hasan Defense with a pick 6 to put KU up 7-0.

Offense looked good on first drive.

Defense has been decent so far.

Aug 31, 2019 04:36 PM #2

Khalil Herbert has been solid so far.

I will say that Carter Stanley winning the QB job isn't a great sign for the position this year. We've seen over the past 3 years what Stanley is and that's nothing special. He's been given every opportunity to succeed, but has never been able to impress.

Hopefully Torry Locklin can progress enough to take over later this year because he has all the tools to be a very good QB for KU.

Aug 31, 2019 04:39 PM #3

@Texas-Hawk-10 pretty sloppy so far on both sides as to be expected early.

Aug 31, 2019 04:40 PM #4

7-0 Kansas at the end of the 1st quarter.

ISU with 56 yards on 17 plays. 4 first downs with 9:34 TOP.

KU with 52 yards on 9 plays with 2 first downs and 5:26 TOP.

Aug 31, 2019 04:40 PM #5

@Texas-Hawk-10 I'm not sure Stanley has ever been giving the key, he has had several solid outings. Beaty was just so pro Bender he never got a full chance.

Historically the qb position hasn't been great for Miles. I would agree that it's not a great sign.

Aug 31, 2019 04:43 PM #7

Offensive line could be problematic.

Aug 31, 2019 04:45 PM #8

@kjayhawks Stanley has had one good game in his career. Stanley was given every opportunity to win the job, but his arm strength, awareness, and decision making have always been sub par.

Stanley is definitely more mobile than Bender ever was, but he also got sacked a higher rate than Bender ever did.

I've never claimed Bender was elite, but once Bender stopped having to look over his shoulder last year, he played solid football and gave that team some good chances to win some games.

Stanley has always seemed like a better fit as a back up QB to me.

Aug 31, 2019 04:49 PM #9

@BShark Miles has also always been someone who preferred a run heavy Power I. That's why he could never consistently beat Saban.

So far, there's definitely a much stronger Koenning influence than Miles influence with the offense so far. There's still a little bit of the "I", but not the majority of the offense which is a good sign.

Aug 31, 2019 04:53 PM #10

That didn't look like a forward pass on that replay. Looked like half a yard backwards. Hopefully ref determines not enough evidence to overturn the call.

Aug 31, 2019 04:53 PM #11

Oof

Aug 31, 2019 04:54 PM #12

Gogo defense

Aug 31, 2019 04:55 PM #13

I've never been a huge fan of the 3-4 or any 3 man front on defense. Too easy to open up running lanes to me.

Texas Hawk 10 said:

Hard on the linebackers. You better have thumpers to run it well

Aug 31, 2019 04:57 PM #15

Offense looks like Beaty is still here

Aug 31, 2019 04:58 PM #16

College kickers :face_with_tears_of_joy:

Aug 31, 2019 04:59 PM #17

@Kcmatt7 My biggest reason is because you have to have a huge nose tackle and it's very rare to have a true two gap NT in college. Most DT's just aren't big enough in college to be effective at the role.

It can work in the NFL because guys are much more physically developed and can focus on building the mass to be effective.

Aug 31, 2019 04:59 PM #18

If we can get the offense to wake up for a few series, its blowout. Defense has been solid outside of 2 plays

Aug 31, 2019 05:01 PM #19

I would put MacVittie out there now to see if he could spark the offense.

Aug 31, 2019 05:01 PM #20

Carter Stanley suuuuucks

I'm not too hopeful. At this point just win.

Power I has been the best offense so far today.

Aug 31, 2019 05:03 PM #24

Even completions are an adventure. Herbert tho!!!!!

Aug 31, 2019 05:03 PM #25

I do like finally seeing play action. I'll never understand why Beaty didn't utilize it much more last year.

Aug 31, 2019 05:05 PM #26

Two score lead yay

Aug 31, 2019 05:07 PM #27

I think we'll see Macvitte all second half

Aug 31, 2019 05:08 PM #28

kjayhawks said:

Hopefully so, Stanley can't throw more than five yards that well.

Aug 31, 2019 05:08 PM #29

I love Hebert but 2 of those runs are TDs with pooka. That's why I'm not worried about the offensive just yet.

Aug 31, 2019 05:09 PM #30

Don’t have TV today. What does attendance look like?

Aug 31, 2019 05:09 PM #31

Special teams coverage has been very good

Aug 31, 2019 05:09 PM #32

At least from what I’ve seen. I didn’t flip it on until halfway through the first

Aug 31, 2019 05:11 PM #33

Mike Lee baby

Aug 31, 2019 05:12 PM #34

@kjayhawks Herbert is a great complimentary back to Pooka. Herbert is a very good back, but he doesn't have the game breaking speed Pooka has.

Aug 31, 2019 05:13 PM #35

@Gorilla72 I haven't really seen a good shot of the crowd to get a good estimate of the crowd.

Aug 31, 2019 05:13 PM #36

Hasan Defense with a stupid play there.

Aug 31, 2019 05:14 PM #37

Should have had good field position . :/

Aug 31, 2019 05:16 PM #38

@Texas-Hawk-10 that what I was getting at buddy.

Aug 31, 2019 05:19 PM #39

Dom Williams not having a good half so far.

Aug 31, 2019 05:19 PM #40

3rd and 14 bring out the punter

Aug 31, 2019 05:20 PM #41

Safe to say we need to work on our screen game...

Or drop it for awhile. Teams will key on that knowing Stanley doesn’t have the arm to convert a lot of 3rd and longs

Aug 31, 2019 05:21 PM #42

Too predictable on 3rd and long today. Screen every time. A draw play to Herbert would be a good mix up.

Aug 31, 2019 05:21 PM #43

Great coverage again, the playing is silly, we are getting chunks running it so why stop.

Aug 31, 2019 05:21 PM #44

At least we have a good punter.

Aug 31, 2019 05:22 PM #45

Uhoh

Aug 31, 2019 05:23 PM #46

Blown coverage on that play.

Aug 31, 2019 05:24 PM #47

Hopefully defense holds them to a FG.

Aug 31, 2019 05:25 PM #48

That penalty almost assures a td.

Aug 31, 2019 05:25 PM #49

Can't see a good angle, Lee looked like he had the arm though.

Aug 31, 2019 05:25 PM #50

It was a good call unfortunately

Aug 31, 2019 05:28 PM #51

Finally a good shot of the crowd. Alumni side looked pretty full, endzone looked pretty empty, couldn't see the student side except the area where the band is. I would guess the crowd is 30,000 or so.

Aug 31, 2019 05:28 PM #52

I think that's going to be a TD.

Aug 31, 2019 05:29 PM #53

Wow. I thought it was a TD

Aug 31, 2019 05:29 PM #54

Surprised at that one, guess refs couldn't see the outside of his foot.

Aug 31, 2019 05:30 PM #55

Iowa State struggling against UNI

Aug 31, 2019 05:30 PM #56

I think it was too close to call, I hate when they look for so long. That's not indisputable

Aug 31, 2019 05:31 PM #57

Huge to hold them to three.

Aug 31, 2019 05:32 PM #58

Hopefully Macvitte comes in and does something. It should be 24 to 3, missed opportunities is the offensive issues. Only 3 points on an average or even below average FCS defense

Aug 31, 2019 05:32 PM #59

Dodged a bullet there...

Aug 31, 2019 05:34 PM #60

Halftime stats: 10-3 Kansas

Total yards: ISU 163, KU 133

Total plays: ISU 35, KU 27

Rushing: ISU 18-81 (4.5), KU 15-89 (5.9)

Passing: ISU 12-17 82yds., KU 9-12 44yds.

Time of possession: ISU 16:28, KU 13:32

Aug 31, 2019 05:34 PM #61

I honestly think this ISU team is better than coastal Carolina will be next week.

Aug 31, 2019 05:39 PM #62

Les Miles said he’s sticking with Stanley in the 2nd half. Radio interview as he walked off. 🤔

Aug 31, 2019 05:39 PM #63

Kcmatt7 said:

That seems like it's pretty normal and ISU will escape with 3 point win on a late TD or FG.

Aug 31, 2019 05:42 PM #64

Well- - Coach said he is staying with Carter. - -If Carter is our Starter without McVittie getting a snap - - - Were in trouble based of 1st half - -against an FCS football School. - Sorry.

Not crazy about that, but also might be pretty condemning about MacVittie's ability.

Aug 31, 2019 05:45 PM #66

Traditional Les Miles power I pounding Herbert up the middle has been the most successful offense so far. Hopefully more of that with some play action mixed in.

ya they saying right around 30,000 maybe just a hair over

Aug 31, 2019 05:55 PM #68

Defense looking shaky to start the half.

Aug 31, 2019 05:56 PM #69

That was a helluva spot there

Aug 31, 2019 05:57 PM #70

It was blown dead then he stuck the ball out to get. I would say a minimum of a half yard shy.

Aug 31, 2019 05:59 PM #71

McCullough bailing out the defense there.

Aug 31, 2019 06:00 PM #72

@Texas-Hawk-10 bend, dont break, wake up O!!

Aug 31, 2019 06:02 PM #73

Parchment is going to be a good player for KU. I've liked his skill set since the spring game. He's the potential deep threat for KU if we put in a QB with an arm to push the ball down the field.

Aug 31, 2019 06:03 PM #74

Sosinski sighting! (pls forgive if one occurred in 1st half)

Aug 31, 2019 06:11 PM #75

Great drive by Carter right there. Good looking all around

Aug 31, 2019 06:12 PM #76

@mayjay It actually did, Sosinski had a catch in the 1st half.

Aug 31, 2019 06:12 PM #77

Nice to actually see adjustments made from the 1st half.

Aug 31, 2019 06:15 PM #78

We may need to switch kickers 😑, 4 points left the board off of Jones leg.

Aug 31, 2019 06:15 PM #79

Don't think Liam Jones is keeping the place kicking job for long. If he does, FG's are going to be an adventure all year long.

Aug 31, 2019 06:15 PM #80

Does anyone understand what the long review was?

Aug 31, 2019 06:17 PM #81

kjayhawks said:

That 49 yarder he missed isn't a gimme even with a good kicker at the college level.

Jones pushing everything left is concerning though and a switch probably needs to happen for next week.

Aug 31, 2019 06:31 PM #82

I really like Parchment

Aug 31, 2019 06:34 PM #83

That jet sweep to Parchment is going to be a good play all year. Can't wait get Pooka back and run a fake jet sweep a run it to the other side with Pooka.

Aug 31, 2019 06:35 PM #84

That quick toss to the RB has sucked both times today

Aug 31, 2019 06:36 PM #85

That was a piss poor executed play wow.

Aug 31, 2019 06:36 PM #86

@Kcmatt7 That toss dive play is a staple of a Les Miles offense so we'll probably see a lot of it this year.

Aug 31, 2019 06:42 PM #87

Awkward looking tackle on that catch.

Aug 31, 2019 06:46 PM #88

I'm kinda frustrated ISU is still in the game at this point. They really shouldn't be, hopefully we can get a stop here or things get a little interesting.

Aug 31, 2019 06:53 PM #89

That was pathetic on a 4th and 8. Let's get some points offense

Aug 31, 2019 06:54 PM #90

@kjayhawks We're not a good team yet. These players don't know how to finish teams off yet.

Hopefully we get there under Miles, but it's a process and won't happen overnight.

Also, don't forget this game was only about a 4 point spread so it's not like KU was expected to blow ISU away.

ISU is pretty comparable to Nicholls St. so even hanging on for a win today is an improvement over last season.

Aug 31, 2019 06:55 PM #91

@Texas-Hawk-10 I figured it would he close I predicted a 27-17 win. Just ticked because we should've blown it open.

Aug 31, 2019 06:58 PM #92

@kjayhawks We're just not good enough yet.

Aug 31, 2019 06:59 PM #93

That sack is why I'm not a Stanley fan, not enough awareness to throw the ball away when being pursued.

Aug 31, 2019 06:59 PM #94

I think we may have just lost

Aug 31, 2019 06:59 PM #95

Aug 31, 2019 07:00 PM #96

The QB position for us is basically just being a tackling dummy.

Aug 31, 2019 07:03 PM #97

Need a stop here.

Aug 31, 2019 07:06 PM #103

Wvu and Iowa state also struggling wow

Aug 31, 2019 07:07 PM #104

@Kcmatt7 I think Torry Locklin can be that guy, but he's not ready quite yet. Maybe by midseason.

Scaling back the playbook isn't the issue with Locklin, he's just not ready yet to run a B12 offense.

How does every team we see have better QBs

Aug 31, 2019 07:17 PM #127

Aug 31, 2019 07:18 PM #128

Okay Parchment was a good late find in crootin

Hell yes!!!!!!

Aug 31, 2019 07:20 PM #130

kjayhawks said:

Changing offenses every year limits the development of QB's much more than people realize. The announcers keep bringing up Stanley being in his 5th offense in his 5 years. That's why our QB's don't look better.

They are spending every spring learning a new system instead of growing in a system. I'm hoping Koenning stays for awhile so the system is consistent and the QB's can actually develop in the spring instead of learning a new system for the next several years. If that happens, we'll see the QB play make real strides forward.

Aug 31, 2019 07:21 PM #131

Double hell yes

Aug 31, 2019 07:21 PM #132

Parchment is going to be a star. Best player on offense for KU today by a lot.

Aug 31, 2019 07:23 PM #133

Can Les Miles borrow Katie McClure from the soccer team to be the place kicker this year?

No Coasting next week! (Pun intended.)

Aug 31, 2019 07:45 PM #146

JMU is the second ranked FCS team. They could beat quite few FBS teams, including several P5 programs.

Aug 31, 2019 07:51 PM #148

@Texas-Hawk-10 Same percentage, though! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Aug 31, 2019 07:53 PM #149

Stat of the day: James Sosinski now has more points for the football team (6) than the basketball team (4) haha.

Aug 31, 2019 08:09 PM #150

Iowa State escapes in the 3rd overtime after recovering their own fumble inside the 2 yard line. WV now tied late in the third. I hope all B12 teams win besides KSUCK.

Aug 31, 2019 08:12 PM #151

@mayjay Yost won more games, that's my tie breaker.

Too bad KU didn't keep Yost or Kansas football would likely have a very different and much more positive history that it does.

Aug 31, 2019 08:31 PM #152

Watching Coastal Carolina play eastern Michigan right now. I thought maybe ISU could be the better team but I'm not sure. These guys look to have good size and speed.

Aug 31, 2019 09:08 PM #153

@kjayhawks Those are two bad teams. From the little bit I watched, I think ISU is better than both CCU and EMU.

Aug 31, 2019 09:17 PM #154

Solid win. The line play wasn’t great on either side, but did just enough. Stanley was passable. Kid has stones. Rumor is MacVittie is nicked up. I didn’t love the playcalling, especially in the first half. I think the offense will be a work in progress as the staff gets a better idea of what they have. Pooka will make a huge difference next week. Pooka + a week of film to digest makes me think we’ll be better next week. It is abundantly clear this staff can coach. Les was a steady force out there and even had his great Mad Hatter moment. We’re in a good spot.

BShark said:

If Stanley is an adventure - - what does that say about McVittie? - -not a single snap

Aug 31, 2019 09:45 PM #156

Think David Lawrence made a pretty accurate statement after KU went down . - -After the game he said - -that's the difference between last years team and then this years team.

Last year after ISU went up late - would of been ballgame. - - Not this year - -said it's all about changing of the environment - -chemistry.

Stanley was far far from perfect today - - Yet got to give him props on that last drive very solid drive - - It's a win and we move forward from here guys - - take the win - -we got ALOT of work to do , BUT, you crawl before you walk - -hopefully we can learn from the mistakes today , enough of them to learn from.

Curious to see if he tries McVittie to start next week? - -Maybe he STILL doesn't know who he wants - -yet he said he would play 2 QB's a lot - that's what surprised me more then anything - - - no McVittie all day not ONE snap -they pretty well stuffed our running game after that 1st run by Herbert - -will be good to have Pookie next weekend. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Aug 31, 2019 11:12 PM #157

@Texas-Hawk-10 definitely tough to gauge. Usually most teams make a big jump from week one to two. Hopefully we are one of those teams, with the added plus of Pooka Magic.

Aug 31, 2019 11:16 PM #158

@jayballer73 I like the idea of sticking with someone, so its not the revolving door like with Beaty. Stanley definitely had some bad passes and poor plays. But most of which is very correctable, like leading you back forward on a screen and hanging on to the snap. Getting timing down with receivers and what not. I'd give him at least 3 games if he looked better all during camp and earned his spot.

It does my heart no good to see KSU score on their first 4 possessions vs Nicholls State.....

@Gorilla72 Nichols did lose some guys on defense, but I too thought that would be a close game. A person never really knows, I didnt figure ISU would need 3 OTs and a fumble bouncing their way to beat UNI either.

Big 12 stays unbeaten with one game left this weekend as OU plays Houston tomorrow night. Boston College looked sloppy vs Virginia Tech tonight winning 35 to 28. Former KU QB Ryan Willis was terrible turning over the ball 4 times tonight (3 picks and a fumble) and someone else also lost a fumble for VT. Not often does a team lose on the road by a score with that many TOs.

Hey, we've got some terrific receivers; all the other parts, especially the offensive line were pretty poor. I'm looking forward to getting Pooka back and seeing the post-game one improvement that sometimes happens.

I've got mixed feelings about the oline. Pooka will make them look better and it's not like Stanley is doing too much even when he has time. I think overall the line was okay. It will improve as this staff starts getting in their own HS kids.

I have to agree with you BShark - I think overall for the 1st game the O-Line did OK - - -The one thing and I don't know how many fricken times I've said this - happened with the old staff and even now -- Get rid of that dam little flare pass in the flat - -NOT ONCE have I ever seen ANYTHING good come out of that. - Almost every dam time they try running that thing we got thrown for big loss.

Stanly can run some but like has been mentioned by some others I think actually - - Terry Locklin will be our best QB at the present anyways - -a more true Dual threat QB - has some motor to him - - Cater can run some but not like Locklin for sure. - -

It was the 1st game you take the win and improve from here - -last year we would of lost that game - -Pooka will help for sure - -however the O-Line has to be able to provide a hole to run through get that straightened up quick

@BShark From Section 26, Row 28, I saw ISU defenders in our backfield on almost every play. Our backs were being met with a defender 5 yards into the backfield. Maybe that's correctable. On our side of the ball, our defense rarely put any pressure on the QB or running backs. I just expected a lot more from our experienced offensive line and the defensive line is as weak as many predicted.

@stoptheflop remember there's beer this season so we can drink within the stadium when things head south lol.

I really dont think there is any reason to panic right now. Last season after losing to Nichols, I thought we were probably only winning one game. Beaty and his staff improved the team and with pooka we were able to win 3 games. Several years we have seen a Bill Snyder mildcat team escape week one with a narrow victory but end up winning 6-8 games. Heck in 2011 they scored in the last few minutes to beat a FCS team in eastern Kentucky that would only win 3 games all year and KSUCK ended up winning 10 games. The point is, that good coaching staffs make their teams better each week and I'm interested to see how much Miles can improve this team by mid season.

@kjayhawks Agree. they need a set time limit. If it takes longer than 5 min how can it be indisputable?

In other good news Steven Sims JR has made the roster for the Washington Redskins.

I rewatched our winning drive and was impressed with the protection the O-line gave Stanley on that drive. Maybe that's a sign of better line play going forward. Also, Stanley's goal line play the previous series should have been called an incomplete pass; Stanley was in the process of passing when the ball was knocked loose. It sure seemed like the refs were very quick to call that a fumble. The stadium announcer called it a backwards pass, but of course there wasn't a receiver behind Stanley.

Sep 02, 2019 10:50 PM #171

@stoptheflop I agree, go back and watch KSUs "forward pass" against Mississippi State last season. The one looked like a fumble more so than Stanley's and by a lot.

Sep 02, 2019 10:51 PM #172

@stoptheflop Even though most of the OLine played last year, several of those guys (center and right side) are in new positions so there is a little bit of a learning curve. I'm not too worried, but it'll take a couple of games for their chemistry at their current positions to gel together.

Sep 02, 2019 10:55 PM #173

@stoptheflop that and sitting here thinking about how they didnt even review it ticks me off. It was a crucial play for both teams and late in the going. I'm not sure who the crew was but I hope they weren't B12 and we never see them again.
