The Spurs arenāt that good, so why would Self want to leave a top 3 job in the sport to get his teeth kicked in by the LA teams, Denver, and the other Texas teams? Barring a near death penalty Self is staying. At least thatās what heās told Long, et al.

I'm not saying HE WILL - -I just saying that people who think that he could EVER walk away from KU - - is just living in a box.
There are some people that think just because it's KU - -that would NEVER happen - I got news for those people - - it happens all the time - - with all kinds. - -just saying anything that happens will not shock me. - If he stays - -great. - -if he goes - -no problem , wish him well.
KU has never had a problem landing really good Coach's Coach leaves - I have no problem in feeling we land another really good Coach. - There are people that feel if we were to lose Self - we would fall off the edge of the world roflmao - -don't panic we be fine
My only thing or reason to think he isn't leaving would be when he had the chance to go Coach at his Alma Mater and ol boy pretty much giving Bill his check book and saying write your price and he turned him down. - that would be my reason to see him not leaving - if he isn't going to go Coach there and being able to name his price then I don't see it - -but doesn't mean because it couldn't happen - -sure the hell wouldn't be because of Long
@jayballer73 I think we all remember Royās exit. This seems less likely barring huge NCAA penalties. If the NCAA drops the hammer who knows?
Normally I wouldnāt even entertain such notions. However the circumstances have changed. If the NCAA slaps KU with sanctions? It would be a huge stain on HCBS, and would tarnish heās legacy and KUās. Plus with the impending suspension or ban HCBS is facing. It would make complete sense if he was considering making the move to the Spurs or NBA in general.
No one here KNOWS coach Self. No one knows whatās in his mind. No one knows how sanctions will impact the dynamic within BB, the athletic department, and the school administration (including the board of regents).
Anyone who dismisses that this risk is more than marginal is simply full of it.
This is a reason coaches leave college.
This is a reason coaches get forced out.
Even without the NCAA stuff the risk is certainly there, perhaps minor that he leaves on his own. But with this? Itās real. And itās even more heightened because he could get shown the door or he could reach the point of be tired of dealing with.
Everyone has their breaking point particularly when there are other options.
If it happens, then I'll believe it.
The Spurs are different breed of franchise from other teams. They traded the best player in the league away because he was trying to pull a power move on the Spurs. Buford and Pop don't play that game.
If there was one NBA franchise that would allow Self to build a team in his image, it would be the Spurs. Do not forget that Tyler is currently an employee of the Spurs and Self and Buford are extremely close so this makes sense on a lot of levels for Self if he was offered the position.
That said, I don't believe he'd be at the top of the Spurs wishlist if he retired after this season. Becky Hammon would probably be their top choice or possibly Tim Duncan who's an assistant coach now as well.

Self won't be their top choice if Pop retires after this season. They've been grooming Becky Hammon to take that job for several years now and that's who likely takes over. She's earned the respect of everyone who's played there, she's been a pro before so her knowledge of the game is unquestioned, and if Pop is endorsing her, which will happen when the time comes, she'll get the job. Only way Hammon isn't the Spurs next coach is if Pop doesn't retire and some other team hires her first. Then I would look at quite a few other coaches from Pop's tree first before Self would be brought in.
The family connection of having Tyler working in the scouting department could help Self's case, but I still think he's pretty far down the Spurs list at this point.

Yes. Roy is one of the best ever to coach in college by any metric. Will probably pass Dean in wins tomorrow, has several titles.

We very well could. If it comes to that point where we having to find another Coach , could be a crap shoot for sure.
