@approxinfinity I’m curious about what goes into the decision process to ban a user or lock a thread. I’m not disagreeing with any decisions just curious if there is a process you go through. Is it like “I know it when I see it” or is there certain stuff you look for?

@benshawks08 i don't have a formal process. I think 2 days to cool off makes sense here. @HighEliteMajor is a long time poster that has put a lot of thought and feeling into this board and deserves the benefit of the doubt. Hope he takes a breather and comes back.

As far as the thread, I think we need a fresh start when things get out of hand, ie people cussing people out. Some have a higher tolerance for this than others. But I think at this point emotions have overridden reason. The thread also has a negative origin + history that I wanted to put behind us. Let's just restart with a new take.

I think permanent bans are almost never necessary, even if I disagree with HEM a lot. While discussion can be good, some people are not worthwhile after showing a long history. I would encourage anyone to use the forum block feature before resorting to personal attacks.

It’s obvious that HEM felt attacked by being labeled “racist” and “white supremacist” and I know I’m responsible for some of that. But I’m not sure how to proceed in a conversation when things like, “And the cold, hard, bottom line fact is that is blacks, as a group, had the same work ethic and morality as the Hispanics that risk everything to come the US, much of this would be moot.” Which is objectively racist and, “
We bow down to < 13% of the population that refuses to focus on their nightly assassinations born from a sick culture of extreme violence, lack of personal responsibility, and disrespect for women. A culture that refuses to help itself. Where the leaders is the culture — the athletes — glorify the “thug life.” Great leaders.” is definitely white supremacy. To me, those things have to be called out. And I hope people will call out my racist views as well.

I gave myself a little breather this last week because I know I had some personal attacks locked and loaded but decided that wouldn’t really be helpful. I do try to work to foster discussion and avoid getting personal but would appreciate if people let me know if I’m ever crossing the line.

looks like I missed a lot of fireworks using the block option. Although it appears it was a well served decision

@approxinfinity I don't think it would be a bad idea to make 2-3 people moderators that can shut things down when they get out of hand by either locking a thread or bans, temporary or permanent, if necessary. I don't know if you could directly give them the power to do that or they tell you what needs to happen in a situation like that, but I don't think it'd be a bad idea to have multiple moderators that way if one of them gets involved in something, there's still at least one other impartial person involved.

I'll also add that when you're discussing 400 years of racism in this country, of which it was legal for about 350 of those years, it's not going to be a very positive conversation for the most part.

I have struggled recently like everyone I think. Priorities are shifting. Thanks for the kind words. @Texas-Hawk-10 we have a few moderators. But that can create a class structure too that I'm trying to avoid. I'd rather people have just one despot to loathe ;)

So a few people reached out to me about HEM. Apparently some of the personal attacks were directed at me. I can't bring myself to unblock him to read them but I hope he gets to a better place mentally. I don't think he is an idiot, which means he is purposefully being as awful as he is about points regarding race and, I was told, lgbtqia people as well.

If I'm stupid for seeing through horse shit discourse thinly veiled as "wanting to help" while continuing to victim blame, then call me the village idiot.

that makes 2 of us lol. - -It has been so boring , Mainly basketball as you say - - we got robbed of a quite possible National Championship. I just for sure absorb even the most tiny Basketball recruiting info/football info - -I'm ready but it is going to for sure be a different type atmosphere season once it starts
